Lol I hear ya, you think science would study our weeds and see why they grow so good no matter what the condition of the soil and they don't get fed, yet they can survive a drought and too much rain...I think there is something we can learn from weeds.

I always say: Only if you do you can do it wrong. It sounds better in Portuguese, for English there's that Samuel Becket quote: “Ever Tried. Ever Failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.” Pt translation: Só erra quem faz. I keep these on my back pocket for when (not if) I screw up. :)

    Hi, Becky. In case you
didn’t know I copied this for you: Daffodil leaves should “not” be cut back until after they have at least turned yellow. They use their leaves as energy to create next year's flower. Daffodils continue to absorb nutrients for about six weeks after the blooms have died. During this time they need plenty of sunshine and a regular supply of water.
I learned about this with tulips, irises and other plants. 😊

    • @juliejames917
      @juliejames917 2 года назад +5

Wow well this explains why my Iris’s are like four feet tall this year. I have them all over my property. I didn’t cut them back last year because of all the stuff we have all had to deal with for two years. I remember thinking that other people don’t cut theirs, so I let it go.

Last year was my first year gardening and I didn't get much of a harvest because I had the mentality that one bed can only have one type of plant in it. I am very limited on space and after watching you plant the root bags you have recently I decided to throw caution to the wind and try interplanting in all of my beds and pots. I am very excited to see what kind of harvest I get as I was able to plant a wide variety of things this year

According to my Picture This app, the plant shown at 21:15 is a wild radish. The one shown at 21:24 is a field mustard which is a member of the kale family. The flower at 29:03 is a poppy. Hope that helps! I can't wait until we harvest all that garlic! I planted garlic for the first time ever in my new garden last fall and I am just now starting to harvest it as it falls over. I'm loving all that I have harvested so far. Most of the bulbs are pretty small but I've gotten a few big ones so far and I think the biggest ones with the fattest stalks are the ones that still remain in the bed right now.

  • @gardeningwithcaitlin

They need phosphorus and potassium bc they fruit. Nitrogen promotes leaves. You will have more leaves than peppers and tomatoes if you give too much nitrogen bc the plant will use it's energy for leaves instead of fruiting. Bone meal and greensand works for phosphorus and potassium. If you get an all purpose, have more p and k and less n.

When you go into your photos and look at the picture, there is an “i” with a circle around it at the bottom. You touch that button. Then underneath the picture it will say “look up plant.” You can identify plants with a picture that you take. I’ve been using it a lot.

I plant corn on or after father's day here in Kitsap county. My grans put out tomatoes and summer squash starts on or after mother's day and winter squash, peppers, melons, and corn goes out around fathers day in Seattle. They grew gardens at their house and had two plots at the first pea patch in Seattle. Unless you are cold framing, later is better around here. My family has been growing food here since 1920. Dog hair is your best slug repellant. They hate getting their foot mucus filled in with it. Goat and sheep hair works too but if you use a fleece you have to tease the fibers apart.
Note because of the cool wet spring, I'm only now putting out my mother's day plants. Watch when the cowslip blooms to determine soil temp. Mine just bloomed a few days ago. Those shaded back beds work well with cool temp greens like spinach and kale. Mulch heavily to hold water during the hot season. Not drying out will inhibit bolting. The old garden would be a great spot for perennial eatables. Think greens, walking onions. Check out parkrose permaculture as she is just over the river in PDX and has a 1/2 or less with a very large yield to that is staggered throughout the year.

Something I’ve been learning, this year, in my gardening journey, is watering in the morning is the best for the plants. I don’t know if that’s just for my area, or all over. Reasons I’m seeing: Watering in the morning helps the sun to dry the leaves all day since wet leaves leads to diseased leaves, watering in the afternoon can cause the sun to evaporate too fast and plants don’t get the water they need, and if you water at night, there’s no sun to dry the leaves making the diseases to come on faster.
Just some fun watering facts I thought you’d be interested in! I’m loving your garden! I’ve actually been learning so much from you! You are inspiring me to document my own gardening and scratch cooking journey!

Hey Becky, I'm looking to buy my first house in the next year or so. So I'm just over here living vicariously through you. I'm super excited to finally have space to plant my own garden, my current dinky apartment has no room for anything. So I'm soaking up all the advice and inspiration I can! Love your videos, and your channel is very delightful.

I watched a video from a great duck farm in Wales - they got ducks because they're "slug-slayers" (I love the term) because they had a huge issue with slugs in their blueberry patch, and now they're duck farmers. Anyway, they said you can leave ducks to roam the garden cos they have flat feet and don't scratch at the ground like chickens do. :) Your garden is doing beautifully, it's wonderful to watch. Thanks for your video!

Becky, you have so many eggs from your girls. Save the shells, crush them, put them around the garden where you have slugs. That should take care of it. You are so busy in a good way, love and prayers, God bless.

    Re: propane torches
You still need to weed whack! Torching only works in smaller spaces when the weed is close to the ground. My husband (who loves fire!) says he would rather pull the weeds by hand. It’s only efficient on the driveway or in patio stone spaces. We were so excited to use but we’re really let down! Can’t stress enough to learn from our mistakes and only torch close to the ground!

I’d second this. I torch all the weeds in my gravel driveway but hand pull or use organic spray in other areas.

I wanted to warn you that I just took my greenstalk apart to change from the wheel base to the spinning base. And there were slugs under every water tray of the greenstalk. I cleaned off every one I found and put a little bit of slugo in each tray. I have never had a problem with slugs before.

I have tons of gnats in the soil of my GreenStalk. I think I was overwatering before planting my stuff. I didn’t want the soil to dry out since out here in the desert if the soil dries out you can never get it to absorb water again. Frankly I’m uncomfortable planting my stuff in it. It’s my soil obviously not the GreenStalk.

😯 Horrors! Yuck 🤢. Lucky you spotted them! Haven’t heard others who have discount codes mentioning where slugs can hide. Perhaps a slug nematode at the beginning of each season could be added to the water after amending the soil/compost.

Hey Becky! I’ve been SO excited for my and “our” gardens. I wish I had everything you had! Between the apples the pears the huge beds and so much more. This year I have planted zucchini, longneck squash, cucumbers, a few varieties of habanero peppers, snap peas, green beans, broccoli, basil, edamame, red orange purple? And yellow bell peppers, and finally, lots of tomatoes

Love your love of the garden! With bulb plants like your daffodils you can deadhead the blooms when they're finished but you should also wait until the leaves turn brown before you cut them. That allows the energy to go back to the bulbs first.

🌼🐝 👨‍🌾🌻🐇🌺I’m Back for another update of your beautiful garden. It’s amazing to see the changes in your plants over time. I love watching my garden grow a little each day, that is my favorite part of gardening. I am making garden videos too on my own channel. It’s so fun to have the growth documented over the season. I still have so much to learn in this area. I hope we can learn more from each other!
