Hi Becky, I know this is an older video, but I just want to let you know that i am soooo inspired by you and your garden - so much that I am creating my own beds like yours on my newly bought farm! My goal is to grow food for me and my boyfriend, kind of self-substainable and I also want a booth down by the road to sell my flowers, fruits and veggies! (very common summer thing to do in Denmark) My farm has 50 fruit-trees (plums, apples and pears), and I am learning so much from you and how you garden. I am so impressed by your knowledge about gardening and I strive to be like you with my garden, :)
Start saving milk jugs and cut the bottom out. When you plant your tomatoes next year, put a milk jug over each of your tomato plants and let them stay until you are sure the cold snap is over. The tomatoes love the warmth in the jugs and any frost will not damage the plants inside. When the tops of the plants grow out the top of the jug, it's probably time
to take them off if you are sure the cold is over. We have had to rush out before dark many times in Central Alabama to cover our tomatoes when we are expecting a cold snap with frost.
Becky, you make me smile & remember how I felt every time I'd see something growing in my 2.5 acre garden. I remember eating some of my harvested items just as I picked them, like you do.

I have a little story for you. I have several Jack-O-Lantern pumpkins growing out in my garden, however, originally I never planted them. I had 1 random pumpkin come up in my flower bed the first year I was in this house 5 years ago. I saved the seed from it and now the seed that I have every year is all from that original 1 pumpkin that I never planted and did not even have seed for. So these pumpkins likely came from a bird. You can pack and can pumpkin puree from Jack-O-Lanterns as well and it's just as good as any other.
I planted watermelons 2 years ago and got a bunch. Didn't plant them last year or this year, but I have a TON of watermelons on a cattle panel arch this year over top of a couple of rows of peppers😁
We tried to make puree out of Jack o lanterns it was super watery and we cooked it for 10hrs trying to dry out up some. Now we use acorn squash instead.
@@SaltySeed Never had that issue, might be an area and how much rain you had. Pumpkins are pretty good at retaining water when they need it.
In Spain we grow luffas and we get a looooot of heat in the summer, like 40°C I think it's 110F, so maybe they need lots of heat. Epic Gardening has a RUclips video about luffas, maybe it can help!
And what you say about the tomatoes and the bush beans, it might be because beans fix nitrogen into the soil and tomatoes loooove that

All of my tomato cages went completely horizontal during a big storm we had about two months ago and in a feat of epic laziness I decided to just let the plants stay down since the plants were already pretty big. They have been producing wonderfully and require little effort from me so I consider that a win.
Just curious, are you having any trouble with pests like mole crickets with the vines being along the ground?
@@outtapocket1220 surprisingly no! Obviously them being on the ground isn’t ideal but so far it hasn’t been such a bad thing.
Your impromptu potato harvest made me laugh! We reconfigured our main veg garden this year adding in some raised beds and eliminating a large in-ground one to give a better layout and flow in our backyard. Welp, I got volunteer potatoes growing out of my lawn now from where the garden was last year 😂 I started watering them specifically and I can’t wait to dig them up to see what kind of harvest it will be lol! We call them the lawn potatoes

Your garden is looking great. Last year my tomatoes really struggled with the heat and wind that we get in Missouri. This year I decided to let them sprawl. I planted 2-3 of each verity at the end of each bed. They have sprawled and set roots into my wood chip paths. I already have about 30, 1/2 pints of tomatoes in the pantry.

For your labels, wash and save your dairy containers. Create a template 3/8"-"-3/4"across, 3"-6" long, with a point on one end which is f,at across the other. Use a Sharpie type perma-mar,er to trace your template around the outside of your dairy container and expendable or garage scissors to cut your plant markers out. Optionally, use an expendable hole punch (or a nail setter punch over an expendable piece of wood) to out a hole in the end for suspending on a trellis. Use a Sharpie or Ultra-fine perma marker to write your plant name etc...9n the white side.
For a little more cost, contractors flags are pretty quick and easy to use as plant labels. Use the different colors to color code your garden. Use Sharpies to write in tne flags and keep the text to words you're willing to use through years 2 to abiut 5. They make a bright garden u til the foliage grows; and after dele ding upon the height of your folliage.

I put some of my extra cucumbers in the ninja, froze into ice cube trays, then vacuum sealed. Cucumber water all year long :)
So funny you posted this. I just got back from vacation and the person taking care of my garden mistakenly put my dukes in the freezer. When I looked up ideas for the frozen cakes, I came across the recommendation to defrost, purée and freeze in ice cube trays. Who knew?!
Borscht is a great way to use beets 😉
I absolutely love your videos.. I love gardening and I am a first timer also. I just started a handful garden of bush beans, tomatoes and okra last year. And this year on my balcony I have peppers, tomatoes, herbs and flowers.
Cabbage growing tip: my grandma used to always take one of the cabbage leaves from the outside of the plant and lay it on top of the head as it grew so that bugs would not burrow or eat into the head. Works like a charm! Loofa will grow anywhere if it’s nice and warm… Unfortunately they take forever to get going. I start/plant mine in the greenhouse every year… by this time they are just starting to grow LOL I am zone 3B northern Canada
Blue lake was my go to tomatoes, I kept canning and the more I picked more grew. ALOHA

I had an abundance of hot peppers so I started to feed them to my chickens. They love them and I swear that my eggs have a Beautiful pepper taste to them.

I love your variety of Tamatoes. Just a little trick we do on our homestead. Tamatoes cross pollinate so to save the seeds of a special variety I use a small organza bag over the flowers to ensure it stays pure.
Hello, just a little garden tip, you mention that you are going to plant beans again in the same bed, you might want to consider crop rotation, the ground will benefit from this practice
I have three pumpkins starting to grow from my surprise pumpkin patch! I’ve made sure to water them tons. I also love seeing how many bees 🐝 have been hanging around.
I think loofahs drag along until you think they won’t do ANYTHING, then they jump into gear and make like crazy.. I threw out a couple seeds of Jack O’ Lantern pumpkins (way too) early this spring, and they, surprisingly, survived several frosts and a freeze.. They must absolutely LOVE where they are because they’ve spread to a 75’ diameter and I have about 30 pumpkins in various stages, and still blooming! I am not new to gardening, but this is My first year to grow pumpkins.

Yay, I just watched your onion and basil harvest and dehydration this morning and then looked at your channel and wished you had more videos made. So thank you! My oven has a dehydrate setting but I really hesitate to use it while I'm running the AC. I have loads of basil but I've mostly been giving it away.
You could chop and freeze it, or make pesto and freeze that.
I planted two of the Barry’s Crazy Cherry tomatoes and have been living off them for weeks! I will definitely plant those again!

Thanks for sharing your garden! It is such an encouragement. It is not uncommon for echinacea to not bloom the first year. Next year it will be covered in blooms starting as early as mid June 😁

HOWEVER
I listened to it as I cleaned my kitchen (unload & load dishwasher, wash some items by hand, scrub stove top, really wipe down surface tops). This may be a no big deal task for some. For me, it’s huge!!!!
I have clinical depression & severe anxiety.
I’ve wanted to get my kitchen in order. But I’ve felt too overwhelmed. And too, I had the mindset of who cares.
I knew if I at least had your voice in the background, I would connect your voice to your incredible sense of “get er done” mentality.
I write this because I did it!

I am so, so impressed with how much you plant and keep up and harvest alongside a full time job. It's just incredible, and super fun to watch. I have three tiny raised beds, some pots, and another patch on the side of the house that I'm just starting to plant as a bee garden, and that's plenty of work for me! And even in that tiny amount of space, I have three volunteer squashes and a tomato that can only have come from my compost, so I'm super curious to see what comes of them. Thanks for taking us along in your garden as it's growing!

I literally have no words……..your garden is perfection. The envy is truly real. I haven’t had to water this garden all year. It’s raining a lot this year and I am kind of worried about them getting too much. My tomato plants are so heavy with fruits, but they aren’t red yet. My spaghetti squash has kind of come to a stand still. I hope it picks up. ☮️💕

Last year I also lost track of what was what in my garden in terms of varieties, so this year I put some effort into making labels. I use plastic yogurt containers, scissors and a sharpie pen. I cut long narrow rectangles of the plastic, fork one end and write the variety on each label and it’s been super helpful from when I started my seeds to now. The plastic labels are durable and can be re-used next year too. No more forgetting what I planted!

Sometime, check out "sweet beet pie". Tratitionally winter overed beets were shred, cooked, riced, and whipped with the cream; or as a mid-winter fresh from the garden treat. It was also used to use up canned beets in anticipation of the current year's food prep season...I had it once with orange-pickled beets which was thickened up with cornstarch or maybe tapioca; I was a little kid so taste and texture were most important to me, not how but what. - it does taste best with small, fresh spring beets harvested for thier greens; and likely to thin the garden.

I learn so much from you as you pack so much information about your different varieties of plants.. all your thoughts on what you have planted ..for a beginner u really know so much about your garden. I’m so excited about your upcoming patio garden of planting in small areas ! I definitely am looking forward to that because that is the way I have to garden. I’m physically challenged so I can’t do much at a time because I start hurting too bad ..but I love to garden and it’s so contagious watching your videos because you get such a delight in planting and then getting to harvest and I’m the same way even if it’s a single little tomato on the vine it’s thrilling when all the work and time u put into it comes to fruition! It’s so exiting to watch as you go through your garden as you explain so much and it helps us learn as you are learning your garden too! Do you keep a journal on all your garden information ex like next year I’m going to plant this bed entirely with such n such beans .. I would forget by next year if I didn’t write it down. Ha . But I love all that you do on your channel but going to the garden and doing stuff there is my favorite,so much fun to watch, canning , putting up your harvest in any way shape or fashion that you do , and cooking ! Great video ! I grew my first butternut last year when it just came up as a volunteer plant .. I could only tell it was a type of squash so it was so much fun watching it grow and find out what it was going to become! BTW It was delicious! Hi, Becky! Your videos are so good! I can't wait to see how you will preserve all the garlic, which you harvested earlier! You inspired me to use the dehydrator, which was sitting lonely in the corner :) Now I'm dehydrating some tomatoes and earlier I dehydrated blackcurrants, mint leaves and lemon and made a fantastic tea out of it! I came to rewatch this video! It’s July of 2022 and I wanted to know how your garden was last year.
You will love your blue lake green beans. We had six rows prob 25 or 30 foot long and we canned 120 quarts off them plus they were picked 2extra times by my husbands aunts once we were done with them. My favorite. My kids while picking loved to see who could pick the longest beans

Beets are naturally sweet and can be eaten fresh, cooked in stews, roasted, fermented, sweet pickled, . So healthy.

Your beets are beautiful. I really enjoy sauteed or stir fried beet greens.
For your tomatoes I've found that it's good to let your tomatoes keep 2 suckers. Try and keep them even, one on the left of plant and one on the right. This way your tomatoes have 3 strong producing branches. I mark my suckers I'm keeping and then make sure to remove all the others. 🙌
I agree, I think you went crazy with the pruning of the tomatoes. Man you must like beans you’ve got all kinds of them everywhere. I like green beans I’ve never tried the other kind. And for going out there to the garden to do the harvest you didn’t harvest very much in this video. Lol. That’s a darn nice garden
I've been homesteading for 38 years and I'm still learning. I just discovered herb salts.take 2/3 fresh herb to 1/3 sea salt.blend until it resemble s course paste ,spread on parchment paper and dehydrate. When completely dried pop in the blender and blend till very fine. The color is beautiful, the flavor is amazing. I use basil salt on cherry tomatoes cut in half and sprinkled with the basil salt and I dehydrate them ...oh my what a tasty snack . You can soak them in olive oil ,like sundried tomatoes. Just another fun way to enjoy your harvest.

I am amazed by all you've done!! Do you ever sleep?? How much produce do you have? So much work to preserve it all. You really never cease to amaze me with everything you achieve. " If we have time I'll harvest it this evening..." . Just love you Becky your great, you inspire me and now my daughter, the ideas you've given us for the freezer and the garden and storing in general. You've got me re-thinking how to improve my pantry, yep I have one have instilled in my daughters the importance of having one. Like you it got us through the pandemic ( well at least the 1st bit) I haven't grown anything for a couple of years due to my health. We had a home invasion 12/21/2019 by a man with a hand axe, who assaulted us 3adults,one 13yr old and a 2yr old. We fought back and he was shocked that two 60yr olds had any fight at all. As you can imagine it certainly knocked the stuffing out of us but he was caught, we're still waiting to go to court. Since then we've not been productive indoors or in the garden, which he trashed. Yep, we actually know him ( thought we did) he wrecked the garden November 2019.
What I'm trying to get to is you've actually achieved some motivation over here in England. My husband has watched bits of your videos and it's given him the impetus to start planning things again. So, from the bottom of my heart I thank you so much Becky for coming I to our lives. All of us involved have/are struggling with day to day stuff in it's entirety, you've bought some light back into it. I can't thank you enough. I'm so happy to have found you and bulk watched to catch up...worth every second spent.

You need to be careful with the tomatoes when you’re saving seed. If you have the varieties mixed the way you have them they’re gonna cross pollinate. You can use little cloth bags (from party favors) and cover the flowers before they open. To make sure they pollinate just shake the flower once in a while. Once you have the tomato or you can take it off and mark it with the colored string so you know you’re trying to save the seeds from that specific tomato plant.
