Becky, if you keep a cored raw cabbage in your freezer, when you take it out and let it thaw the leaves will be soft and easy to peel and roll just like when it's been cooked.

Hi Becky, I make a lazy stuffed cabbage. I core out the middle of the cabbage leaving a cavity for the filling. I cover the opening with several whole leafs to keep the filling moist. It’s more like a stuffed cabbage head . I cover the cabbage with my sauce and bake until the filling is cooked and the cabbage is tender. I bake the cabbage in a Dutch oven so that all sides of the cabbage is evenly cooked. I slice the cabbage in wedges and cover with sauce. It doesn’t take as long to prepare and it is a pretty dish.

My family is Hungarian and we make it a little different. Never pre cooked the sauce. We used heads of cabbage that was picked in the barrels with sour Krout. It was all raw onions and rice. Seems simpler and just let it simmer slowly.

Becky my dad taught me how to make stuffed cabbage. Since my dad as been gone for over 20 years, I have made it couple times lately because I love it and it reminds me of my dad. When I make it I change up the spices I use, depending on what I have on hand at the time. I use ground beef and rice, but occasionally I have put in bell peppers for a different taste.

My mom used to make stuffed cabbage when I was growing up. She cooked them in the old style pressure cooker, it was always a little scary thinking it could explode! Lol She also used tomato soup for the broth so it was sweeter. When she passed I inherited the pressure cooker and finally had gotten the nerve to make them and my Dad really appreciated that because it was a bit of Mom with him when he ate it. I used to make him freezer meals and he just loved that! Unfortunately Dad passed 3 years after Mom but I feel good knowing I was able to cook for him to help out. Food really is a labor of love.

I think if people make pizza once, they will not order out again. Pizza dough is intimidating until you do it the first time. It's so cheap and easy to make. Those 2 pizzas would cost $50 if you had them delivered. I agree about having canned meat in the house, it's a game changer. One day of pressure canning meat makes for 20 easier nights of cooking! Thanks for sharing. I like the shredder since I tend to shred my thumb when I use my cheese grater!

The stuffed cabbage would be lovely as you've cooked it (in a shallower dish) then grated cheese sprinkled over the top and put under the grill for a few minutes until crispy and golden 😋

I’m vegan and I always watch her cooking videos because I can always adapt in someway. For any vegans that may be watching this you can substitute bulgur wheat for her hamburger in this recipe. You could also use lentils but reduce the amount of times the lentils cooked in the sauce, etc. Put the lentils in more at the last second. This can totally be a delicious vegan meal! Oh, you can also use crumbled “butler soy curls“ in place of the hamburger. For those of you on a low fat diet like I am… You can “water sauté” the onions in the beginning! Always love your recipes Becky!

I used to make cabbage rolls the exact way you do but finally thought it was to labor intensive. I just cut the cabbage now and put everything in a big pot and cook it that way. I will have to try the Rasins though, I never heard of that before. I would love to see what you need in your pantry and what you do need to plant for the year, if anyone else wants to see it also. Thanks, I love watching all video's you upload.

Cabbage rolls are on top of the list when I do freezer meals. I also freeze pirogies, and make borscht and Cabbage Roll Soup for canning. The first thing I always do when starting new traditional dishes, is find out which of the traditional ‘comfort’ foods are good for canning/freezing. We’d be lost without Butter Chicken and Rice or Tandoori meat skewers in our freezer these days, my sons (25 & 28) wouldn’t know what to do for a midnight snack…lol

You are so cute. I know you're a grown woman. I also know that you realize you look like a kid. But, you are truly the cutest watching you in your garden. I resonate with all of your screams. My neighbors likely think I'm crazy because I scream every time I see a wasp... (allergic).
I stumbled across your page yesterday and this is now video number four that I'm about to watch. I have a lot to catch up on. But, so far, I've watched your late huge harvest of apples and tomatoes, plus a cooking 18-20 meals video, your Costco trip (jealous, as we do not have that store here), and this one.
Thank you for the many ideas, and showing us your beautiful garden.

My favorite pizza o Bo is fresh basil, cherry or grape tomatoes, onions, sliced garlic & fresh mozzarella. I like it both with sauce or just olive oil. Sometimes for a quick single I use flat bread or pita. And like you, I put the tomatoes on top to roast. Also try with sun dried tomatoes as they are so sweet.

Hi this is Sue, When we make cabbage rolls, the large leaves the l cut them in half, we don't like big rolls, and then par freeze them and then bag them up and take out what we want for a dinner, but when l make them l make about 50+ so we have enough for the winter months, and use the left over small leaves for lining the top and the bottom of the dish, that is the best part if you ask me, slightly burnt yum. Also by doing this, it is a great dinner for those nights you really don't want to cook just pull out enough for dinner, (6 for us) and put in a dish and pop them in the toaster over for a couple of hours, Dinner is done.

Becky, you can freeze without sauce on tray and then bag them for space or make the entire meal in a 13 x 9 or smaller and freeze.
I usually freeze without sauce then build will cool sauce before storing. Bump heat to 425 and try for 45 min to 60.
    Thanks for sharing

Here you go with a cabbage shortcut: freeze the whole head in a bag over night or up to a month. When you're ready to cook it, thaw it completeley and get rid of the access water. Now core it and pill away the leaves.
I do this in the spring/summer, when cabbages are available and I cannot even think.of standing for a long 'facial' with a steaming pot.
The fun thing, is that if I don't have time the next day, the cabbage will still be there in the freezer, ready to come apart for me 😄

In Slovenia, we make the cabbage rolls with sauerkraut - so whole heads of cabbage are preserved and the leaves soften, so you don't need to precook the cabbage and it adds a nice acidity. :)

No tomato sauce, right? Just sauerkraut? My Godmother makes them like that and I can’t find anyone else anywhere who does it without tomato sauce.

    • @zoeashwood9096
      @zoeashwood9096 2 года назад

@@ChristinaVVM There's a sort of thin sauce but definitely not as tomato-y! It's more to do with the liquid from the meat and the sauerkraut and maybe paprika? Idk. :D
