If you freeze the cabbage and then fully thaw you don’t lose nutrition and it’s leaves are extremely flexible for rolling !

My husband has been asking me to fix this cabbage dish for so long! I love your idea of putting all the small cabbage leaves at the bottom. We love cabbage also! I never added raisins though...and probably still won't, but I am inspired to make it again.

  • @TheNoTillGardener

If you put the entire cored head of cabbage in the freezer for 24 hours it will fall apart when thawed and you don’t have to stand over a hot stove boiling the cabbage. It is a perfect consistency for rolling. Try it, it works!

Hi Becky, I make a lazy stuffed cabbage. I core out the middle of the cabbage leaving a cavity for the filling. I cover the opening with several whole leafs to keep the filling moist. It’s more like a stuffed cabbage head . I cover the cabbage with my sauce and bake until the filling is cooked and the cabbage is tender. I bake the cabbage in a Dutch oven so that all sides of the cabbage is evenly cooked. I slice the cabbage in wedges and cover with sauce. It doesn’t take as long to prepare and it is a pretty dish.

You can always use the cut cabbage you use for Cole slaw. Layer your sauce, shredded cabbage and meat balls, and dinner is on the way to being done! My family loves the flavor the cabbage adds, but I'm the only one who loves the cabbage. I make it on New Year's Day.

Oh Darlin, it's a part of who we ALL are, it's kinda just a part of our territory, isn't it? We not only break things but we get burnt from hot pans & cookie sheets and steam, we cut ourselves no matter how good our knife skills are, stuff just happens and that's okay, it just comes with the territory.
No matter how hard we try, stuff happens. XOXO love you

My mother (85) has always been a great cook, but my favorite thing she would always make for me was stuffed cabbage. Not that I can't make my own, of course, but nothing beats mama's.

I love stuffed cabbage! A trick I learned a long time ago is to freeze your cabbage. When it thaws, you'll be able to peel the leaves off easily. I can't wait to try your sauce and filling :)

I grew up eating cabbage rolls. I can’t wait to see what the raisins taste like in sauce. I use whatever I like for filling sausage mixed with beef or beef. Seasoning also change but always garlic and onions. I usually almost purée the onions do to kids. I always add fresh lemon juice to sauce. I cook in oven, stovetop or crockpot depending on time of year. We serve on mashed potatoes. They do freeze well either cooked or raw.

Known as cabbage rolls growing up. I use cabbage and sauerkraut. Tomato soup is a great alternative for sauce. Wonderful flavor with sauerkraut and Campbell’s tomato soup.

Question for all- do any of you with glass topped stoves use cast iron on a regular basis? If so does it scratch the glass? I’ve been wanting on really badly but I’m so afraid I’ll scratch up my stove.

I have had the grater thing for five years. I use it when I need to grate lots of whatever needs grating. It sticks to my enamel table top well. I cut potatoes with the slicer part. Works wonderfully and fast. I love the grater thing.

Hi Becky, if you inventory your pantry now then create a spread sheet think how organized you'll be during harvest. Also perhaps plastic jars for cupboard items (black pepper) then you break less and have more jars for canning, just a thought. I'll try adding ground raisins to my cabbage roll sauce, sounds interesting.

I think if people make pizza once, they will not order out again. Pizza dough is intimidating until you do it the first time. It's so cheap and easy to make. Those 2 pizzas would cost $50 if you had them delivered. I agree about having canned meat in the house, it's a game changer. One day of pressure canning meat makes for 20 easier nights of cooking! Thanks for sharing. I like the shredder since I tend to shred my thumb when I use my cheese grater!

I agree 100 percent about the fresh tomato on the pizza... YUMMY! 😁 Also, if you want to cut a bunch of cherry tomatoes quicker, put them on your cutting board, then put a small lid on top and hold it down while you slice through them horizontally. It works great.

My grandmother stretched our food with this recipe. She took the leaves off when raw and then put them in boiling water individually. I may have to try the method you suggest or the freezer method someone else suggested.
