  • @neburnynhs9394

    I actually read a forum on this kind of thing, and the guy who painted the heads said that he carefully sanded the head first to give it some texture so the paint will adhere better, then sprayed only 1-2 thick coats on, and the pictures showed that it actually worked. Wish I could post the link to the forum but I forgot. I would say you should retry it.

      just a thought though, nice vid

    • @JesseMilhoan
      @JesseMilhoan 8 лет назад +6

      I was going to say, you would have to lightly sand the head to give it grip and then give the head thicker, but less coats. This way the paint will stick to the head. It probably wouldn't last as long as a real coated head, but it would be much more durable than these heads. That's why the refinished coated head held up where there was coating. The paint had something to grip.

    I've used this textured spray paint successfully the way it was intended (static rather than dynamic) on the inside of a drum. Specifically, I converted my 1983 Tama Imperialstar 18" floor tom into a bass drum. When drilling the holes for the new lugs and bass drum spurs, I experienced more break out than I wanted (even holding a piece of 2x4 sanded to match the contour of the interior of the drum). The 8 ply mahogany (luan) shells are pretty brittle. In any case, I filled in all the break outs with wood epoxy, sanded smooth, and then used the textured spray paint in lieu of the original "Zola" coat that Tama used. I have to say, after a few coats and some light sanding, it looks great. Allot of extra work for the inside of the drum but when you look through the 5" port on the resonant head, it doesn't look like I modified it with a shotgun anymore.

  • @TeazyBeats
    @TeazyBeats 8 лет назад +6

    My immediate reaction was that you added too many layers. Then when you mentioned that the paint stuck to the coating better, I realized you should have lightly sanded the heads first for the paint to stick. I will say that those drums sounded pretty damn good before the paint started flying.

    As a painter and stainer, I would have scuffed the skins with hi-grit sand paper or steel wool before painting them, but I seriously doubt the coating was cans of spray paint (auto primer may be closer to actual coating though). Still wouldn’t do it myself but even the krylon plastic coating paint I’d still scuff the surface even though it says it doesn’t need it.

    When I used to paint plastic with spraypaint, I would put a layer of clear acrylic sealer on top of the paint in order to essentially "seal" it in. It prevented chipping and did a good job protecting against scratches. Could that work on one of the drum heads? I've got no clue but it couldn't hurt to try if you're bored lol. I'd do it myself if I had access to any drums right now.

    I work in a auto body shop well theres different types of paint like you could get a vinyl and fabric paint it moves with the plastic so it dont crack like how it did on you and you should of sand down the drumhead before painting it will give it a cleaner look and the paint will have something to grab on

    Here's another spin on the heat gun trick. I learned it 20-something years ago. On coated single ply drumheads, you can also use a bic lighter. You need to be careful and not leave the flame in one spot for too long for obvious reasons: it's fire! But it will work in a pinch. Also, don't get the flame too close or you'll discover another way to make a sound hole. You just want the heat from it. Great job with ghetto protips.

  • @teewaht
    @teewaht 6 лет назад

    It’s a lot more bright and open without he paint most likely due to the paint muffling the head and when it is removed the drum creates a more wide open sound.

  • @dc11032007
    @dc11032007 8 лет назад

    I agree with less coats, a little pre sanding, and maybe applying with it having a slight bit of tension on it. No where near the tension of tuning it, but just enough so when u do tune it, it was already "primed" to be tuned.

    You should try adding your own dots to heads. I took an old 2-ply head and made myself a few dots that I glued into pinstripes. They have a much warmer, thicker tone now and totally sound better than just pins on that kit. I also used the remaining rings in the same way you would moongels.

    as an old painter and decorator, i would suggest either using a fine fine wt dry sand paper to sand the clear heads and this will create a porous surface for the paint to adhere to a little better... or even use a primer, and for the texture you can actualy use sand or any grit you fancy..
    maybe evans and remo heat treat their heads for the coated finish? or they have a special type of paint that doesnt get so brittle and break off when played????
    so i would try a fine sand paper.. or a fine glass bead or sand ,sand blasting rig and then just primer... and maybe only two light coats??? idk???

    You have to use another spray like clear matte lacquer, apply several thin codes and wait more time between them, finally you can get strong vague-translucent white coat.

    Hey Dave, do you have any experience with a sub-kick? I think that would be an interesting build episode, maybe an old snare and shuv a speaker in there? :) cant wait for the next build video. Peace!

    Could you please try plasti dipping drum heads for toms, snare and bass? That would be so cool to test the sound of :D
