I know this is a year old already, but here's a tip for CHEAP cymbal sleeves you might be able to use in the future: Air hose. The small clear plastic stuff usually used for aquarium air lines works great, and it is dirt cheap. You can keep a foot of it in your stick bag or if you have hardware cases, and you cut it with a knife or scissors (usually have a utility knife in the tool kit for gigs). It is simple to cut to any size you need, and you can get larger diameters depending on your hardware. It lasts a good long time before it gets brittle or cut through by the cymbal edge plus it is quite soft on the cymbals themselves. You can get it any place that has a pet section like a WalMart or a pet store, some hardware stores sell it like Home Despot or Lowses, and I've even seen it the Dollar Store before. Usually no more than $2, but often less.
I git a few free zildjian cymbals one with 50 holes in it not 100 though, somebody either drilled em or removed rivets and cut it to be 14", it has its own sound ive grown to love it
An year ago i broke my drum chain pedal in the middle of a gig! So i friend of mine took 4 plastic straw and he tied up! And i could keep playin the hole gig and keeps working today!
I put dryer sheets in my bass drums so they don't smell musty in the basement. The heat gun trick works great for when a kid gets stabby and dimples the head. Drinking straws for cymbal sleeves don't last long but they'll work okay for the snare strap. Once used two quarters under the screw that clamps the bass pedal to the drum because the rim was too thin for the clamp.
I know this is an old video, but when I first started playing, I had need for new heads and no money. I took some round cookie sheets, put the heads on them and put them in the oven. That tightened them right up and they worked a while longer.
An other option for floor tom-snare stand is to use a floor tom that is at least two inches bigger than the snare drum so that you can put the snare drum on top of the floor tom head. It creates a really awesome fat sound.
Dude. Totally ran into this video because I'm on an unnecessary youtube steak and the felt made mallets is an incredible idea. I can't believe I never thought of that. That's awesome
I did a little experiment on my old drumhead where back in the day I used drumsticks with colored tips and the drumhead was so dirty and I wanted to use that again. So I cleaned my drumhead with water mixed with baking soda and it worked.
kabassa ring is kewl...Im a vet, and have my dog tags...remove the tags and drape the necklace over top...smaller diameter 'bbs"...works great! I like your idea too!
As for the hack around 3:45, if you ever need something to hold you snares on, take an old head, cut out a strip of it and use it just like the original snare holders. Better than shoelaces, and I'd trust my two-ply drum head better than a straw
I was a drum tech for some years and I used the heat gun method all the time..great way to save on heads...also the mallet idea...plus don't forget never buy moon gels..go to the dollar store and buy merry Christmas or happy Easter gels etc....a dollar for a but load of them..ever notice there is a face in your cymbal..
mghc7 cool, I have another video where I talk about moon gel alternatives, but never heard of those christmas gels, Ill have to check them out. face in my cymbal though? where? haha
pen grip cymbal sleeve works well. I'm using it on my ride, and crash ride. and I also don't use felts on the cymbal tops. I think it let's the cymbals breathe better. and ironically I was already using the bottle cap for the cymbal. I love the tips. they help a lot. subscribed. keep the tips coming.
i have had 3 cymbal companies all tell me the same thing. a tight cymbal is a reliable cymbal. having it tight on top with felt so its not flopping around prevents cracks in the middle at the bell. to tight causes cracks at the edge. a ride being nice and tight is a good thing with felt it shouldnt really dampen sound much. if anything help it be cleaner.
David: I watched a video with Small Faces Drummer Kenny Jones playing live, this would have been filmed around `1965 and on his Ride Cymbal instead of Rivets he had a "small" diameter light fixture pull chain, It was a longer chain hanging down on the cymbal from the post of his cymbal stand. It was the kind of light fixture chain that looks like small round beads but they are metal and if you have 2 separate chains they can click into each other to make one longer chain. , They sounded pretty good.
LOL I love the video but it sounds like you were harnessing your inner Hank Hill while explaining everything. But seriously rad video I totally subscribed.
Much better "rivetted ride cymbal" hack just hang any metal necklace/chain from the center post across the surface of the cymbal, i prefer using those round ball type chains that hold dog tags, but you can buy them cheap at any hardware store as a bulb light chain extension(same exact thing) just put a loop on one end, size it to fit, then hang that lil rascal on there, sounds better than rivets and is cheap, easy, and lightning fast to put on and off. ive even done it mid song for just the bridge.
Hi rdavidr your drum hacks are simply sick i have learnt so much from your videos and have implemented some of your hacks already ! I like to share some of my own hacks in appreciation to yours cheers

Alex Tseng this one is using sandpaper that roughly approximates the feel of a snare batter head ; it kinda of works except for obvious flaws also not great for brush work
Here's a drum hack idea, makeshift cymbal stands. I know a lot of drummers like me don't have the money to go buy 6 $70-$100 stands and I can't find much on RUclips to make a good makeshift stand.
I aspire to have as much free time as you! Great work through your whole channel!

Dude the hair dryer trick is to seat new heads. I've been doing it for over 20 years. That heat gun will work but you GOTTA be very careful. It will overheat the head and ruin it. When installing new heads get the head on the drum and tuned. Go around the edge of the head focusing on the bearing edge and get the head warm. Push down on the head and get it to seat and go back over the head with the hair dryer. If you use a heat gun just keep feeling the head and made sure its not hot. You want it WARM not HOT. Stretch the head with your hands again and tune the drum and let it cool. Go back to it later after its cooled and finish tune the head. I've always used remo ambassador frosted batters and have been able to get a level of tone out of my drums that is so very pleasing using this method. I think this method helps seat the head to the bearing edge and reduces inconsistent surface tension around the drum. Sometimes I wish I was a youtuber so I could share what little things I know to work. Hope you try it. Love the channel. BTW a list of the kits I've owned. 1976 Slingerland Bicentennial red, whit and blue stripes my first kit at age 12 some 36 years ago.. I've tried heat guns on drum heads... and talked to a veteran drum builder about it..... hey says that it's not good for rejuvenating a whole head, since the tension won't be even anymore. BUT using a small focused heat source to take a ding out of a head is ok.
so the floor Tom snare hack came in handy one day at a wgi event went I forgot my snare stand 4 hours away and I just thought oh I know what to do( also it works the best if you put the feet into the rim ) thanks for the hack you saved my skin also If you are wondering I am the set player for a PIA group called modulation z
You forgot the most important thing when bringing old heads back to life. Dishsoap, a kitchen sponge, hot water and elbow grease. I do it all the time, my drums sound great longer this way :)
hey david I have a new hack I have yet seen done I came up with it myself. not sure if anyone else had a video of it but it's a bass drum dampening trick I have 2 versions of the technique. first one on my old kit I took double sided sticky tape (I know bad choice) stuck soft foam on sticky tape and then stick tape and foam inside of drum head bout half inch from edge all the way around the head.. second one 2x5 inch peace of thicker foam just 2 peaces one at top other at bottom duct taped to inside of both heads about an inch from edge of head
Can you please explain in your next video how to mount a stick bag to the floor tom? Or what is the best way to mount such a bag. Greetings! Keep up the good work!
Hey man i recently joined your channel, i dig it a lot, love the drum hacks, is something I do a lot too, just for fun why don't you expand a little on this and present sort of more creative drum hacks, like stacking cymbals or using pans, for example I use the "old drumhead" a lot for the the "deep snare sound". Some pleople even use "scrap metal" for different textures. I dont know, I think you can pull it off. Again, thanks for the hacks, I enjoy the editing too! :)
Hai david,i just made my custom snare drum from 13" tom.. but, snare wire won't stick to the snare side head propperly..it's hanging up a bit... Any suggestion how to fix it? Thanks for your answer..
Timothy Fitzpatrick Ive never really been interested in cocktail kits to be honest, the only thing Ive made that is somewhat relatable is a remote hihat stand. Though, if the opportunity presents itself, Ill definitely film it!

A single rivet is better than multiple rivets, as 2+ rivets shorten the vibration time and do not increase sizzle volume. Make the hole as wide as possible and the rivet wing thingies as narrow as possible (while not falling out of the hole) to maximize movement space and minimize dampening. A chain with many beads is worse than a chain with one bead, because the weight/mass of the many beads shortens the vibration time. A longer wired chain is better than a short wired chain in order to get the bead on the chain as close to the far edge of the cymbal as possible, but you do NOT want the wire/string to touch the cymbal. Rivets are far better than anything on a wire/string. Heavy objects are worse than light objects as they increase dampening. Drilling holes in cymbals is a pain. Plan on breaking bits.
hi, david, I can't get my lug (where the drum key goes) off the screws. it's on a practice pad and I can't see the bottom of the tension rod. I think it's stripped how do I fix it?
I made some mallet’s out of old jack in the box antennas. Took two drum sticks wooden tips & some painters tape wrapped it around put gorilla glue and wha la home made mallets 🤡 works great 👍
the straw!! it happened to me once on a gig, happily, just right between sets... so all I got was a dollar bill... i'll tag you on my instagram proof. still working!!
My drum kit didn't come with a snare stand but came with 2 stools so I use the stool and it works fine but it's really hard to balance on it if it falls off or you knock it
Don't mess. With the V.
Great video!

One time I forgot my snare stand, so I inverted my throne and used that as the stand. Them a grabbed a chair to sit on.
Great idea, you made the best of that situation
I personally use guitar strings as cymbal rivets. They work pretty well.

Should try the floor tom upright with the snare drum setting on the head. It does sound pretty cool!
If you tension the drumhead on a drum first the heat gun will work better by applying even tension instead of warping it

Try it with head tight and really is best for toms!!!
The cabasa ring or chain mutes the cymbal just as much if not more. If you want a rivet cymbal, drill it for a rivet (or however many you want.)
The heat gun may help in a pinch, but long term you'll only thin it and put a hole in it.
Can you please explain in your next video how to mount a stick bag to the floor tom? Or what is the best way to mount such a bag. Greetings! Keep up the good work!
Luke Dymowski of course, ill make a quick one soon.
