As a performer and drumming instructor myself, I thought that he did a terrific job here. A lot of fun ideas. My fav was marking the head for the sweet spot for the rim click. The only thing that I would do differently is to use the butt end of the stick for a more resonate "block" sound. But-- this does not take away from this great, cleverly put-together, very helpful video. Superb job!
Yes
I use butt on rim and run a line about it.
Lol on my school kit someone's done that
Favorite was “Save your hoops with stick sleeve.” Love all the fun stuff you post for drum nerds! Great job Dave!
Subscribed just for the inverted old head trick. Bravo.
The 80/20 Drummer Ayyyye! Nate!
+The 80/20 Drummer it's an avesome trick. I do it all the time. The more beat (therefore strecthed) the old "inverted" head is, the better. It also make rimshots sound quite whacky. Brilliant. Also brilliant on toms if you want a really dry 70's porn-sound.
Awesome vid! My favourites were marking the snare head for cross sticking, password rudiments, and playing with the grain of the stick vertical! All great tips, thanks!
I want to say "this is the stuff I did in high school and college," but I STILL do these things. Drums are a weird thing. It's like a shitty car.
Costs as much, too.
But you technically said "this is the stuff I did in high school and college"
Try this out put one card under the snare wires but first loosen it first then put the one card over the snare wires then once u did that unloosen it
How to remove sharpie from drum heads xD
spray deodorant on it, then wipe away
alcohol wipes remove sharpie marker from plastic or skin.
Isopropyl alcohol 😋
Dry Erase markers will remove sharpie.
Cover it with dry erase and wipe away
Drumstick Wood Grain Positioning:
Real Simple, but never 'cross sticked' my mind.
+Anthony Ankrah BA DOO, BAAH!
+Anthony Ankrah Use a sharpie, mark the 'up' position.

You guys are the worst at this(not that I can do any better).
Manasi Gangan The worst at what Manasi?

The HH rod saving hack was awesome!! Been playing 50 years and never thought of it. Thanks you!
When the caption “cheap and easy cymbal rivets” appeared above a Byzance cymbal, I was shocked in horror of what was to come. Dear god I was praying the cymbal wouldn’t be destroyed
I "invented" the cutup head for damping back in the 90's. You can lighten it up more with a hole punch tool, and it almost floats. Love all the cool tips, man.
I had 2 favorites. Folded drum stick sleeve to protect bass hoop, and chain material for sizzle. The homemade O ring is a great one, but I had thought of that a while back.
Dude! My favorite was the hi-hat storage trick!
I pretty sure that was how my Tama hi hat came straight out the box...DIY
Got to say I liked the cheap sizzle hack though.
My favorite it actually learning how to tune a snare drum instead of putting shit all over it
I remember watching this video in middle school (circa 2016)! This video got me drawn to your channel!!
The hihat stand hack blew my mind! Thank you very much! So much space saved!
OliveAir26 No problem! but yeah hihat stands suck to move around
OliveAir26 this actually comes from Tama, they advertised it with the HH805/905.. it's an awesome feature. Don't know if it will work with all HH-stands!
Oh, dang. I tried it with my HH-stand and it works for me. I have crappy Taye stand. It saves space in my luggage...I mean hardware bag ;)
Hi-hat rod storage was my favorite. Using the clutch to secure it was genius.
I always do that when packing them into my traps case , keeps the clutch from getting misplaced as well as keeping the rods straight .
For the cymbal rivet idea: ceiling fan chain sounds the closest to actual rivets (that I've found). Give it a shot! I use a paper clip to string it to the cymbal post. Great channel keep it up!
I never thought of saveing the kick hoop. Sonor kick drums comes with a plastic stripe on the hoop for that. But now i have a tip for drummer friends! Thanks and keep coming with videos! I like that kind of stuff!
I loved all the hacks my teacher taught me. Good to learn the one about wood stick grain.
excellent video! no time wasting introduction.....and my fave hack is the snare head sitting on the batter head🤙
I loved the super nice drum head cut out for the snare! BRILLIANT and at no cost!
I have one for you.
With the trend to mount the 12 or 13 tom on a snare stand I tend to remove the tom mount.
As a cover plate I use kitchen laminate / formica samples.
Sometimes you need to search for the right size but they can be drilled and sprayed.
The new one about passwords is awesome! Never thought of anyhing like that! Much appreciated, mate, keep it up!
Дмитрий Давидяк Thanks! I actually talked about the password thing in a video a couple years ago haha, but glad you liked it!
Awesome!!! The snare ring is always the first thing I go to!!
That hi-hat storage trick is good. The rod on mine doesn't have a locking ring in the other end, but I still take the top tube off the hi-hat stand and use the clutch to somewhat keep it from falling out. It's worked good thus far, in a hardware bag.
The cross-stick one is actually quite genius...
That fat snare sound trick is something I've been looking for for a long time. Cheers for that.
Drum hack #11: If you can’t afford any rings...Use your cell phone to mute the snare. It works like a charm. My favorite hack was the “rivets” one. Thanks!
Good stuff, thanks for the effort to demo them all!
Although I have to say that I think it's practically impossible to get good cross stick sound without flipping the stick around.
With butt end up you get much beefier and more projective sound.
This is great ! Loved the vertical/horizontal stick position, never thought about that !
Good work, I'll try some of these! For making the snare tighter, I used an old silencer pad and cut the middle out. It seems to work really well!
The Horizontal wood grain is a life saver for me.... wow thanks for sharing this video
Congrats on 100,000 man. Can’t wait till you hit 1 million
DIY o rings are like the best drum hack ever, they make the toms and the snare sound so much better. Forget moon gel
I just bought a used Pearl Rhythm Traveler drum set today so this video (along with your restoration vids) will be extremely helpful in the next coming days.
Best to use the butt end of the stick for cross stick imo. Fatter sound and bigger sweet spot range.
+Larry Tate Agreed
Yeah but sometimes it’s hard to switch it back or switch it to that side to begin with
Larry Tate
The end half of my drumsticks are all chewed up. If i hold it from there i will get splinters.
And im too lazy to buy new sticks for some reason
That snare with the old head on top sounds rrrrrrrrad.
On the rimshot. Some rims are rolled over more and the sharp edge don't cut the sticks as much. You can hammer them over a little (with a plastic hammer or cushion) so they are not as sharp. You only need do to where you hit it. Don't hit the rivets when you play. It will damage your stick tips. If you cut a dead ringer out of an old head don't destroy the next inner ring for a smaller drum. Tie a wire to your thrown and your bass to keep it from creeping/.
I've never played drums, or planned on playing them. Why am I watching this? Good hacks, though, I could see these being beneficial for the people who do play them.
Because it's a great video, that's why you're watching.
I like how the video before this one was "How to remove Sharpie from a drum head." Guess you needed your own tutorial after making this video!
I made a stick holder out of a piece of 2" ABS pipe, a pipe cap and a spring clamp. It attaches to my hihat leg. Been using it on the road and at rehearsal for almost 20 years. Cost less than $5
+Kirk shelton Nice! I have a whole playlist of some stick holders haha ruclips.net/p/PL6W6pllXpl2Q0VL1vwKqsw_4S2nI02elU
+rdavidr for a snare muffler i used a SOCK!
rdavidr I played at a studio once that had a kit with maxi pads for head mufflers. They kind of worked and they're self adhesive.
The final one was my favorite. Gonna have to try that out
My favorite hack is coming to your videos for dope music. Good shit dude.
This is pretty smart. I like it. 👍
If you have for example 10, 12, 14 kit. You could make "o-rings" out of one single 14" head...
***** very true! I actually just filming a video about uses for old heads the other day haha
Great idea!!
that hi hat hack so simple but blew my mind
Back in the 70s some of us used a bouncy Super Ball on the kick pedal beater instead of the crappy hard felt "bulb". Just get on about the same diameter of the length of the stock beater. Drill a hole through it big enough to force the ball on the shaft, then add washer at top and bottom, screw nut back on and thump away.
Lots of great tips here and great video!
I love the snare hack on 1:37
The Fat snare hack was the best.I once used sheets of felt over the tops of my drums or tuned them way down to get rid of that metallic sound.Another good hack would be how to keep the Snare chains from rattling from a Bass guitar when jamming with friends. Its always been a problem.
Another great use for old snare heads is to cut them into strips and use them for replacement snare straps.
I think my favorite was the hi-hat rod trick.
Dude the video was very helpful, you've earned another subscriber. Cheers from Dominican Republic. :D
i like the cross-stick one, i'll be using that this weekend at my gig, thanks for the tip !!
I used an old dog tag chain and it worked perfectly! Thanks Dave!
There were multiple times throughout this video where I had to ask myself WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT BEFORE!?!? Thanks for posting!
Cool man! My favorite hack: the hi hat storage, great! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
The old upside down drum head on the snare to make the sound phatter is my favorite. The the hi-hat storage was a close 2nd. :-)
To know where a tuning key is all the times. Put a 3" strip of Velcro on your kick hoop (near the top) and the other part of the Velcro around the tuning key. BAM! It's there all the time during a gig or rehearsal (learned that from Chad Smith).
Also, when taking a band break, or when you're not using your hi-hat (HH), loosen the clutch so the top cymbal rests on the bottom. This saves the tension on the HH spring, which can wear out over time (I learned that from some drumming book years ago...forgot the title and author's name).
Peace!
the hihat trick is just pure genious!
Another good Snare deadening trick I use is duct tape
I usually out 1 or 2 small pieces of duct tape under my snare wires.
This helps reduce the the snare wire vibration when you have mics setup
Love this channel! You guys should record cutting my 24x24 bass drum into 2 bass drums.
You should be called "The drum scientist". Amazing stuff, thanks!!!!!
I’ve watched this tooooo many times
I don’t regret it
This channel is a lifesaver.
all were brillant. love the reusing the old skins or rivits hack. 💜💜💜💜
The old head laying atop the reg snare sounds perfect. 1:36
I like that high hat trick! Pretty ingenious.
Re: the old drum head cut into a ring. If you take a box cutter and cut the outer part by running right along the edge of the metal rim of the drum head, when you are done you will have a ring that has a curved edge. This nestles up against the rim on your snare drum and the ring will be way less likely to shift around when you are playing. Way better than any store bought ring.
That paper trick is so legit though. My snare sounds like trash normally, but with a single piece of paper it sounds perfect.
The phat snare must not be overlooked. Nobody wants the St Anger sound.
Instead of moon gel, I use window gel decorations.
Love this song. I love birocratic, that dude rules
I liked the paper on the snare, hadn't thought of that!
The hi-hat storage was my #1 fav
Love the cross sticking one. You don't need drum muffles and rings if you tune your drums correctly
Another use I've found for those cardboard stick sleeves is folding them over twice long ways and sticking them under floor tom legs. Too often a lot of the resonance from a floor tom just goes out to the floor and the drum sounds way too dead. Doing this trick with the stick sleeves really brings the drum back to life! For close micing situations I like to sometimes use this trick on just two of the three legs. That way a little bit of the resonance goes down (so you don't risk getting feedback) but you still retain an adequate amount of tone.
For the snare what I like to do is cut out a thin circle of rubber and it makes the snare sound so much better.
Such a good video! They were all so useable, My favourite hack was probably the saving your hoops one. Need to go back in time now.
I don’t even play the fucking drums I just watch these
I use an other idear for the snare sound (and other toms) : I simply taped a little handkerchief on it ! This prevents having a sound too long.
the hack with rudiments as passwords was my favorite. that was legitness.
Great idea for a great stick click sound everytime!
I loved this video thank you for the tips!! the old drum head to muffle the sound is totally going to be my next thing to try out. thanks again
Thanks a lot bro i really need this
I had an issue about my cymbals and don't know what to do until i saw your vids thank you
Last one was my favorite
Last example was the coolest!
why am i even watching this, im a guitarist and pianist lol
And piano is percussion sooooo...
@@jellybean6722 piano is just automatic slap bass
same lol
drumstick sleeve hack was awesome!
I have one for you. If you use Remo Pinstripes (Clear or Coated) and you rip the top layer, but the 2nd layer is still good, then cut the top layer off and use the now 1 ply as a Reso head. I did this when I was low on cash and it worked great.
+Brent Sabel haha nice, Ive actually mentioned that in a video before lol
+rdavidr Hey! I just ran across your vid where you used the single ply trick. I used it on my 16" Floor Tom Reso. Keep up the good work!
I do something like that for my hi-hats. I like the cross stick one, Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick uses that. For rivits, I've seen Carter from Dave Mathews do that.
For the cheap and easy cymbal rivets you can also connect a bunch of paper clips and put it on.
3:24 dog tag chains work too. Those are easier and cheaper to get
I rarely comment on how to vids, but love your stuff. Nicely produced and always very informative. Sub for life here!
FAVES- the cross stick mark and the Cabasa chain. :^) Good vid!
My drumming teacher thaught me a hack too. If you want to get rid of the fat sound of the snare and you don't have old heads just tape some thick toilet paper on the side of the head where you actually don't hit very often. It will get rid of the sound. You might want to replace the paper when it frays out.
I'm loving the hihat storage idea!!
Cheers, man 👍🏼
high-hat saver advice was pretty amazing!
The binder clip hack changed my life.
Like this if you don't even have a drum set.
Avaveo a
Watches "10 Drum Hacks" but, no drums :(
I only have a snare
no drums not even a musician but here i am haha
Avaveo have 3 snares so that I can practice for marching band
i stumbled into this video on a search for a new affordable snare but im gonna fool around with some heads now thank u
Subscribed. I also watched snare drum muffling. Your a big help!
