As a performer and drumming instructor myself, I thought that he did a terrific job here. A lot of fun ideas. My fav was marking the head for the sweet spot for the rim click. The only thing that I would do differently is to use the butt end of the stick for a more resonate "block" sound. But-- this does not take away from this great, cleverly put-together, very helpful video. Superb job!

+The 80/20 Drummer it's an avesome trick. I do it all the time. The more beat (therefore strecthed) the old "inverted" head is, the better. It also make rimshots sound quite whacky. Brilliant. Also brilliant on toms if you want a really dry 70's porn-sound.

That hi-hat storage trick is good. The rod on mine doesn't have a locking ring in the other end, but I still take the top tube off the hi-hat stand and use the clutch to somewhat keep it from falling out. It's worked good thus far, in a hardware bag.

  • @markkuliini

Good stuff, thanks for the effort to demo them all!
Although I have to say that I think it's practically impossible to get good cross stick sound without flipping the stick around.
With butt end up you get much beefier and more projective sound.

  • @petro062
    @petro062 5 лет назад

On the rimshot. Some rims are rolled over more and the sharp edge don't cut the sticks as much. You can hammer them over a little (with a plastic hammer or cushion) so they are not as sharp. You only need do to where you hit it. Don't hit the rivets when you play. It will damage your stick tips. If you cut a dead ringer out of an old head don't destroy the next inner ring for a smaller drum. Tie a wire to your thrown and your bass to keep it from creeping/.

Back in the 70s some of us used a bouncy Super Ball on the kick pedal beater instead of the crappy hard felt "bulb". Just get on about the same diameter of the length of the stock beater. Drill a hole through it big enough to force the ball on the shaft, then add washer at top and bottom, screw nut back on and thump away.

The old upside down drum head on the snare to make the sound phatter is my favorite. The the hi-hat storage was a close 2nd. :-)
To know where a tuning key is all the times. Put a 3" strip of Velcro on your kick hoop (near the top) and the other part of the Velcro around the tuning key. BAM! It's there all the time during a gig or rehearsal (learned that from Chad Smith).
Also, when taking a band break, or when you're not using your hi-hat (HH), loosen the clutch so the top cymbal rests on the bottom. This saves the tension on the HH spring, which can wear out over time (I learned that from some drumming book years ago...forgot the title and author's name).
    Peace!

Re: the old drum head cut into a ring. If you take a box cutter and cut the outer part by running right along the edge of the metal rim of the drum head, when you are done you will have a ring that has a curved edge. This nestles up against the rim on your snare drum and the ring will be way less likely to shift around when you are playing. Way better than any store bought ring.

  • @GamingDrummer89

Another use I've found for those cardboard stick sleeves is folding them over twice long ways and sticking them under floor tom legs. Too often a lot of the resonance from a floor tom just goes out to the floor and the drum sounds way too dead. Doing this trick with the stick sleeves really brings the drum back to life! For close micing situations I like to sometimes use this trick on just two of the three legs. That way a little bit of the resonance goes down (so you don't risk getting feedback) but you still retain an adequate amount of tone.

I do something like that for my hi-hats. I like the cross stick one, Bun E. Carlos from Cheap Trick uses that. For rivits, I've seen Carter from Dave Mathews do that.

For the cheap and easy cymbal rivets you can also connect a bunch of paper clips and put it on.

3:24 dog tag chains work too. Those are easier and cheaper to get

My drumming teacher thaught me a hack too. If you want to get rid of the fat sound of the snare and you don't have old heads just tape some thick toilet paper on the side of the head where you actually don't hit very often. It will get rid of the sound. You might want to replace the paper when it frays out.
