Been watching David for years and it has to be said, his actual drumming chops have come on leaps and bounds. He's always made great content, but it feels like in the past few months, his playing has become absolutely next level.
I remember ordering a single set of guitar strings (coated at least, not cheapies) and they had included the candy TWICE -- once in the bottom of the box, and again on top of the strings, as if maybe the person doing the packing couldn't remember if they had already loaded the box and just threw in another rather than taking the time to poke around and check.
@@mal2ksc And then you got a phone call a few days later, right? “Hey there: This is (so-and-so) from Sweetwater calling to see how you’re liking your new strings!”
@@beatfromjetsetradio8239 They could try, I've still got five of them on the guitar. The high E "only" lasted a bit over a year before I managed to break it. For a wall hanger or closet guitar that doesn't get handled much, but you still want it to work, I can highly recommend Elixir coated strings. You could easily have the same strings on there for ten, twenty years and have them not suck.
When I was playing metal I did the coin thing with the bass drum but I used a half dollar and the hard side of a DW beater. It was super clicky! The half dollar was stuck to a head protector pad that was made from Kevlar. I soon found that you have to put a protector on the head, then the coin, then another protector because if you don’t, the edges of the coin cut through the bass head pretty quick. I also found out that a half dollar is not as strong as you think. I noticed after 3 practices and 2 gigs that it was bending where the beater makes contact. Yes, I bent a half dollar into a 45 degree angle!
At first I thought the gaff on the head would defeat the purpose of the belt/no belt inside the shell. But on 2nd thought, it just proves that gaff tape is a much easier hack than putting a belt freaking INSIDE of the drum.
Duuuuuuuuuude! My duuuuude! You is KILLIN IT on that Metal run! And BLAST-BEATS? Fkkkkkkkin YEAH! 🤘🤩🤘 I've been following your channel for the past couple of years, but lately you've been onto some Next-level wave! You're one helluva versatile drummer!
When Dave brought out the double bass pedal I knew shit was getting real and that blast kicks in and I thought the flight I was on was gunna crash cuz it freaked me out
No comment on the drum hacks but I just wanted to let you know that your playing skills have really improved a lot since you first started making these videos. Thanks for posting these. They are very informative a refreshing.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video! I know you’ve talked about bass drum muffling in the past, but maybe you could do one with side-by-side comparisons of different muffling hacks… Like filling the bass drum up with watered up newspaper work he’s been folded up paper towels inside the heads…just for “kicks”
The sock hack is something I wish I had used for a cover I had done way back in November last year! Also, please do a part two video! These are awesome!
holy shit man i love how you transitioned from the soft piano intro while putting the sock onto the foam and put it on the beater to the song. sick transition man.
Hanging sand bags on top of floor tom legs is a hack I've heard of to reduce sustain but retain the tone that other dampening techniques can kill. Would love to see you try this!
Since you sometimes play a double bass drum pedal try this hack. I have been doing this for years, but only have seen it one other time. Get a longer rod for your secondary bass drum pedal. This allows you to place the pedal to the outside of the high hat pedal. This keeps the high hat pedal in the primary position but you can still easily get to the double bass drum pedal. I guess it depends on how much you access the double bass pedal, but for me I get the best of both worlds. I get to play a double pedal when I want to, but also have my high hat in the traditional position.
I've tried it with gaffers tape, duck tape, duct tape, and mole skin. When you mic it up, I didn't really notice too much of a difference, but I felt like the feel of mole skin was the best where the others were too sticky and caused like the beater to kinda stick
Here are 2 snare hacks: 1) put several layers of newspaper under the top head. The way the paper vibrates adds to the snare sound. 2) for a way less ringy snare......wood shell.... The v belt thing made no difference. How about putting a belt around the outside? Way better chance of the belt squeezing the shell to dampen the ring. Again great playing!
The belt inside the snare sounded pretty good, I could hear the difference. Now I want to go play my drums, thanks Dave. I can't think about any hacks I did to my drums, a Pearl kit with Zildjian cymbals. Hydraulic heads on the toms and a Kevlar snare head.
one hack that used to work back in the day when i was using them cheap generic all-thread hi hat clutches for me was this: take one or two of the rubber gaskets from a grolsch beer bottle(s) (the red rubber ring) and put it/them under the felt thats under your top hi hat, that way then if your clutch comes apart mid song (or specifically if the screw-on base comes apart) your hi hats wont fall apart and you can carry on the song till you get a chance to screw it back together :)
Just a little tip on the bass drum quarter trick...Tape them to the inside of the head instead of the outside. I shattered a quarter on the outside at a show, and it sliced my kick drum head mid show. (This was pre Kevlar patch days though)
The Vinny Paul bass drum click can also be done with an old drumhead put over the bass drum batter heat batter to batter side and gaffer taped on. It has a more convincing sound to the ear without mics at least.
I like that pedal too as I have the Rolling Glide. So smooth with great response. The only thing I don't like is the Para Clamp II. They need to make something where you can just flip it and it locks in. Thats cool you got a sweet water endorsement
What are some other drum hacks you would want to see tested?
The first one!
Ive heard of people, that put a Sandbag inside the Kickdrum für Dampening, because it adds Mass to the Shell.
I would love to see that
You could put some buckshot inside of a snare and see what that does. You may have done it already.
I just want to see you play more *METAL*
Honestly david those blast beats and double bass were pretty good. We need a cover sometime.
Dude, seeing my old videos is making me cringeeeeeeeeeee
Update: That was sick playing dude!! And I think my hack still holds up!!
ahhh the good ole days 😂
Ye Oldie Drum Beats Online
OMG I LOVE YOU DBO
Ilyyyy
David doing double bass?
it's almost as if he's operating at....a new level.....of confidence.....and power....
That's right!
Such power
New life in place of old life.
Pantera reference. Yea I get it at least
Lmao, that comment wins the internet for today!
I never though I'd see this day! Dave laying out them blast beats!
And good ones too!
Pretty sure he mentioned once upon a time he was in a punk/hardcore band years ago. A lot of hardcore guys need to know how to blast
@@lukeabrahamsen-collins808 indeed, preety smooth if I do say so myself

Seriously, there were some nice grooves in this one
6:23 Gonna appreciate EMC for actually going to Walmart. He definetly went to Walmart. Definetly.
and no guards were trying to chase him away. how does he get away with this!?
THIS GUY JUST DID A BLAST BEAT
Time stamp for that?
Never mind I found
wheres the timestamp
@@taredaguy4333 8:17
Can we please appreciate how David’s technique IS EVOLVING ( not saying he was trash bc he was already pretty good for a not-professional drummer )
Not only we have EMCproductions cameo but also double bass David?
I found my favourite drum video.
don't forget his blast beat too!
Pro tip when ordering from Sweetwater...if you just order candy, theres a Neve mic pre hiding in the box!

I don't think I've ever heard David play to a metal backing track until today! Not Bad!
I never thought I'd see double bass or metal on this channel. It was an awesome addition imo
That double bass and blast beat section deserves a like itself. 👌🏻
david Cleary has been hitting the shed. love the low key whipping out the chops
Forgot about your channel. Just got recommended to me again, and I’m in love you helped me learn how to drum. Now I produce music. Much love
Im suprised you even own a double bass pedal
same...
Anyone notice how freeeaakin good David's drumming has come along?! or am I the only one?? :D you're rockin dude! keep it up man
He is a great drummer
He’s really pretty good! I like his grooves for every insane occasion.
Never thought he'd play double bass. He has achieved a new level of powa!
David's drumming somehow keeps getting tastier! 4:46 is such a cool feel

that last hack is noticable on record, much better tighter sound with belt
I'm impressed at the sound you're getting out of that Ludwig Rocker snare. Sounds great for the money!
The quarter thing f--ed up my bass drum head. Stretched out a dent but sounded cool on the way there
That ride though. Sounds amazing!
its pretty versatile too!
I was just about to sue you and then you jammed the double bass pedal. Respect!
I love the sound that the foam inside the sock gives when the kick pedal hits the bass head. Nice, mellow and still audible.
The beat at 436 is so jarring like a beginner trying to play to any song succeeded by such an awesome ride hat combo.
Seeing your progress and improvements as a drummer has been truly enjoyable. Keep rocking on bro
I kind of liked the bass beater windscreen/sock hack for that sweet little bosa nova thing he had going on there. NIce.
That flam/late snare thing you played around 5:20 broke my brain for a minute.
I never realized how wide your knowledge of genres is, you sound great in all the different demos dude!
Dave making a drum hacks video? What a throwback, I love it
The first hack is just using a fleece beater but in cursive
Haha yep
I laughed. Good one 👍
The pocket on that second hack, Gawd.
That double kick bit sounded great, don't be too humble. Cheers!

David is the king of elevator drumming too. Also a thick wool sock, if it stays in place. Thats double bass was good, very good DAniel son...

Love the K Custom addition. My K custom 22 Dark Ride is my most complemented symbol. The price is up there, but the live sound is unreal
I've been playing K Sweets for so long, I forgot how much I also like the Special Dry. Time to get the crash back into the rotation 😁

Does that mean the 2nd pedal would be on the left of the hat stand rather than the right? Never considered this 🤔

I used to do the quarters thing.
That metal jam was awesome.
That snare sounds amazing with the belt. Dang! Sweet!!!! Thanks bud! Your kick sounded good with that first hack too
