Recently bought some 2 part silicone 10 to 30 shore hardness , poured in bottoms of every cup, bowl, pan i had all different thicknesses, 30 bucks for lifetime supply of varying thicknesses, shapes, and as long as its clean it hangs on cymbals also. Even poured it around the outer edge of my snare batter between the rim and batter groove, let it cure on the drum, overnight, removable too, shocking results, would love to see what you can come up with using 2 part soft silicone
The best snare dampening method I learned from a classic percussionist. It requires a lint free cloth and two binder clips. You just fold the cloth in half, drape it over the top fraction of the snare and clip it to the hoop using the binder clips. How tight the clips are determines how much dampening you'll get. It doesn't leave residues and doesn't damage the head.
@@dharomusic I've learned this technique from classical percussionist Rob Knopper. If you look for his snare audition setup video, he shows how it's done.
I must say that after years of watching you....I think you are one of the most fascicious drummers out there. I love your sense of humour but also that you get straight to the point without any BS. Cheers mate and thanks for all the sharing of your observations.
hey rdavidr. I am uddeshya from india, I have been watching you for years now. I used to play drums in college. I asked my parents to buy me a drumkit on multiple occasions , but they don't support my dream. I still haven't left drumming though, I play on every surface I can beat on. I hope that I am able to play drums again soon. Your videos has kept my passion for drumming alive, Thank you for everything man, Love from India.
@@mydixiewrecked315 one that would actually look more like an actual moon gel case for giant moon gels would probably actually be a hard drum case, maybe for a 10in tom, and then slap a M0()N gElZ logo on it
Every once in a while I come back to this video for a good laugh. What you should have done is melted gel molds into the exact size of each drum so that the entire surface is entirely moon gel 💡
I produced drums for my band's Post-punk EP 4 or 5 years ago. It took me a week to get the drums right and it took 5 to 7 gels per drum head... But it basically sounded like a drum machine after even before compression. Pretty sweet sound imo.
Funny that i never bought any gels. I just only use that white medic tape for dampening. Its white colour blends with coated heads, thats why. They are also cheap and do not make mess if i hit it. You sir David is full of great ideas and also has a great sense of humor. And more, your drum playing is now awesome.
Makes your cymbals and even snare wires sound really bloody loud! I was thinking, Oh... very little target area for sticking... David just beats on the gel. Oh. OK fair enough!
The felt pads that are used on the bottom of chair and table legs work well for dampening. They have a sticky side to them and come in various sizes and shapes. It is necessary to clean the area with rubbing alcohol to make them stick. Unfortunately, you cannot remove them like a moon gel.
I'm crying laughing at the idea of any law enforcement showing up to your door and seeing you "cook" outside with a respirator, making extremely Breaking-Bad-looking "meth" and you have to explain that it's actually "window gel" for "youtube". You even have the 55 gallon drums!!
This reminded me of an idea I used to have but never knew how to attempt, I always wanted to create a bass drum moongel, that would essentially fill up say 30-40% of the bass drum, making contact with both heads, like a big semi barrel made out of moongel
I absolutely love everything about this video! If i may suggest taking it to the next level? It may be a lot more work, but definitely more practical for playing. Gel Rings
They made the drums sound like they were in a different room and tbh i actually kinda liked it. I mean it can only have very niche uses but it sounds like you just effected the kit a bit and it worked for that little elevator music you were doing lol
I honestly wasnt planning on playing to music, but they actually kinda work for that track. The super muted high pitch of the toms almost sounded like conga slaps and were more prercussion-y. When you play on the gel itself thats a different story...
too many drummers fail to realize -that how your drums sound behind your kit is NOT, how they sound out in front of them... plus -DO NOT try to emulate a specific recordings drum sound -acoustically. there have been many a trick in the mixing room to designate the sound produced on that specific recording.
I love the sound, but I play with fabric covering my heads so I probably would. My main takeaway though: I was going to buy my son some moon gels for his birthday but now he's getting sea creatures instead.
Just want to say although I’m not a drummer, I really enjoy your videos. I would really love to hear you comment on famous drummers and their kits. Would love to hear your take on why so many drummers played concert toms in the 70’s. Nigel Olsson’s kit from 1971 at the BBC studios!
I refuse to use any muffling whatsoever. I had to learn how to tune a snare. I did so well that it hasn’t gone out yet and I don’t remember how I did it.
Good video. Thanks. You could have used a "new moon" shaped tray, for the gel to neatly fit around the perimeter of the drum allowing for adequate playing area.
Huge hilarious video man!!I 'm Not use moongels...i share one hack with you but i think is allready known to many drummers out there. If the overtones are huge you can stick a towel at side of reso head and with this you can easily decrease the use of moongels and have an always controlled sustain for ever!!
Why not try and find yourself a curved mold to pour your melted gels in, let cool down, and then place the new curved “moon gels” on the drum heads? It would give you more playing room surface…
Another fab vid, thanks. Moongel is still a favourite way to dampen, it's just the physics of it, and I've bought several packs in my time, though always baulking at the price. Then came ebay chinesium (red!) knock-offs at a fraction of the price, and even better, YT posts for those of us lucky enough to have the space and resources for this solution. But do we care that it needs to be blue?! Buy less, mix colours up, it's all the same stuff, and it'll be identifiably yours. Cheers from the UK.
Share this with a drummer who needs these for their kit!

Imagine a drum shell made out of moongel, a moonshell... 😳
Now that is innovative!
The only way I can see this happening is David hollows out a shell or builds a shell around a massive moongell like that
This is brilliant!
Moongel on a practice pad...LMAO
Theres a moongel practice pad 🤷♂️
David: “Do you need any dampeners?”
His unwitting target: “Only a moongel”
David, pulling out a comically large moongel: 😈
Good thing you made the gels blue. Like how blue LEDs improve cooling in computer cases, blue makes the drums sound cooler. It's a scientific fact!
But you have to make them red if you’re playing metal!
My kit’s blue, so I’m happy 😂
Ughhh I use clear and black!
And vehicles always go faster if you paint them red
