@@insertmetalusernamehere I ran into the problem too, the the thing with ankle motion is you can't do it at slow speeds as it naturally wants to go fast. Do small bursts at first, like maybe 3's or 4's or 5's. Then gradually try to extend that so your playing just a little bit longer. Another one you could do, practice going from 8th notes to 16th bursts then back to 8th notes again but do that exercise for 3-5 mins. If I may add another tip: write out your drumpatterns in notes. Write each foot/bass drum as a separate instrument, this will give you some insights into what foot should play which notes. Especially if you've played with a single bass drum and only one pedal, as then you are used to having the right foot do the off-beat hits as well. Writing some patterns out will help you see when each individual foot should be playing (usually right on-beat and left off-beat) and should help out spreading the work load between both feet, making the difference in control between them smaller too. No need to write entire songs, just some parts or specific patterns should do the trick.
@@keithbarnes9419 actually imo at least i find alternating every hit potentially better practice than only alternating for fast stuff, but it just kinda depends. I do feel like I wish I had started that earlier though, as if you get used to only alternating bass drums for fast stuff, it gets harder imo to play certain polyrhythms and rudiments and such So I'd say you're good/ on the right track. But again it just kinda depends. Do what makes sense for the beat/song
@@keithbarnes9419 its ok to alternate 8th notes when starting out. the eveness between left and right foot needs to be developed... but at somepoint you must play 16th notes and higher subdivisions, which will requre more speed from each indivual foot. so having good 8th notes with one foot will be important.. but it depends on your drum progress
The using not primary leg tip was crazy awesome! I am ambidextrous, right left-handed but do everything else right handed. With that tip I learned I can use my left leg better for the main kick drum. I can immediately double bass thanks to that!
The over practice one is the most important. Was practicing every day at some point and at reached a phase where i was starting to lose speed and shit and that fucked me up. Recently due to school and other things that have occured i have been at a very bad mental state and hadn't played for like a month or so. Sat behind the kit for the first time in a month and god fucking damn i managed to play lucifer incestus, once upon the cross, some morbid angel songs and in general *fast as fuck shit* i used to not be able to even touch. Take breaks, long ones if needed, its very beneficial.
That combo of feet and hands at 13:24 had a psychedelic effect on my mind, it looks completely insane on a big screen. A great testament to how CONSISTENT you are. And that's why you're a great teacher, I can not stand when the beat is off and no one acknowledges it, it grinds my brain. I started here and come back to watch this intermittently on my journey to double bass. Still suck but getting better, and the more I learn the more I get out of this. Thanks man.
Just moved from apartment life to buying my first home and I can now play drums again for the first time in years. This video has really helped me square myself away again. Particularly the tip about spring tension. I had my pedals adjusted way too tight for my current abilities. Thanks for all you do.
As someone whos has been playing for around 8 years on and off with no double bass once i stepped up to it my left foot was so uncoordinated and still kinda is and this video gave me alot of things to help work on to get better so thanks bro
Your problem is that you take yourself way too seriously. Omg, the most enjoyable, informative video I have watched on double bass. Okay, so I've only watched two, but I'm fairly certain I'm spoiled for life. Awesome. Thank you.
One of the best teachers out there, a hell of a drummer and a funny guy: thank you Samus, I have improved a lot my techniques even because you were there teaching what we really need to know in a simple, enjoyable and thorough way . Cheers from Italy🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
Great lesson for us OLD TIMERS. WHO PLAYED DBL KICK. IN THE 70S..not much variety in those days.. Not many DRUMMERS played dbl in those days..so we have to relearn the muscle memory from so many yrs of playing a certain way.. This will definitely help with my technique and stamina when going FASTER..THANKS SOO MUCH.
The best advice that I ever got when playing with a metronome and this works for any instrument is to accent the 1ste note of the metronome. You can very clearly hear it in oldschool metal guitar where the first note is accented every 4th/8th note if its continues alternate picking. This will help you build the pulse of the song but I found that it will also help me to unconsciously keep track of where in the beat/rhythm I am.
I’m new to drumming and heel up feels so weird to me. Love your videos, thanks for all the tips. And as a guitar player for 30 years I definitely agree, play to a click!!!
Man so very helpful.2 brain hemorrhages I lost alot of my abilities so I'm going in harder ,I've started playing double bass about 6 months now and thanks to you doubles are coming along nicely and exercising with rudiments at 130 bpm slowly but surely.thanks so much for this vid.
when building a new skill, heres what i do. I get the basics in my head and memorized pretty well. Then I don't practice that skill for a few days to let it "marinate" in my mind. Then I come back more familiar with what I learned, It's weird but it works.
Easily the best tutorial maker I've seen yet. High quality, hilarious, and concise. Love your work my dude! Lines up with everything I've been learning so far. Found your video on the Donner electric kit when I was shopping for my first drum set last year. Have played music since I was young but never had the means to learn drums (cost/noise restrictions etc). With so many advancements in electronic kits, I felt it was time to take the leap! Happy to say I've made leaps and bounds from where I was, and I already apply a few of these practice techniques to my regular drumming (Haven't gotten to double kick status yet, just trying to get myself steeped in the basics and being consistent). Took a bit of a break over Christmas because it gets stupid hot in summer here but I've been back on it during winter on my days off and I'm having a blast! I'll generally start with some slow and fast rudiments, then run through a playlist of songs I love to drum to, and maybe even end it by improvising on a track I've not played to yet. Thank you again for your fantastic content and resources! Rock the fuck on \m/ >.< \m/
I think a really good song to practice getting used double bass is the intro to Dream Theater-Under a Glass Moon. It’s fairly slow and only uses 4 16th notes. It gets you used to bringing the left foot in and out and if you aren’t the best at double bass you don’t have to worry about fast 16th note runs. Just getting a solid group of 4 16ths
now THIS is an awesome video. I'm a drummer for, I don't know I guess it's 20 years now, but with a lot of _time during the pandemic, not playing and practicing_ ... feeling that need to get behind the kit again, remembering a fake image of "how good I was, how easy it was, how natural it felt" just to realize - with no exercise, there's still gonna be a result; but I didn't like it and I'll continue to not like it until I get back to the basics. and then the hairy drum lord comes along and drops a video easily accessible for everyone: my day enjoyment is unmeasurable and my day has been made.
I played quite a bit of drums through middle and high school but only played punk rock so I was kind of anti-double pedal. Now I’m 40 and just bought drums and am focusing on developing my double kick technique. This video is helping quite a bit.
Great video dude. I'm the A hole you mentioned that started by playing as fast as I could. I basically hit a wall speed wise and can't play slow for crap. I got two speeds which is fast and faster and no creative alternates what so ever. I'm going over fundamentals now and this helped a lot. Thanks Han Brolo.
Dude, this was sooooo helpful. Thank you so much for sharing. Turns out I was doing almost all the wrong things. Even adjusting my seat height helped my doubles SOOO much. You're the best thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I landed here after watching a drummer reaction video. I'm not a drummer, but I also watched the entire video and you, sir, are an excellent teacher. LOVE the hair, and I love the little funny parts you add to the session.
Very good advice from start to finish. I wish I had RUclips when I was trying to learn songs. So much time weighing down turntables trying to decipher if it was the bass or bass drum. Heal down. Brings back memories of burning shins. Let the beater and head help you. Like a stick on a snare
After over 20+ years I'm just now trying Learn double lol started 7 now 29 lol. The hilarious discovery was how fast my left leg gets tired compared to the right. Lotta work to do 😂
Kudos to you for not quantizing your audio track and keeping the human element. Outstanding, brother. I hate when it sounds like the drums are computer programmed.
Honestly the best Double Bass Drum video out there! No "hacks", BS or crazy things/techniques that only would only work for a handfull of people. Ps. Rammstein is some of the best music to practice to IMHO. I always practice double strokes to their music and I have goten compliments when performing (and get hired just to do) a very common snare solo in the military (aka Tapto, The signal for "end of night") that's basically just doubles speeding up.
So welcome right now! I just ordered a larger bass drum and my first double kick pedals for my electronic kit so I can finally get off my butt and learn double kick! Thanks for the lessons my man!
I replaced the springs on my iron cobras with really thick ones from the hardware store once.. Helped with the speed, but there was a little bounce back on the single kick parts. A wise drumming master you are Samus!!!
I started drumming two years ago and just upgraded to an Alesis surge kit and this is my first time having to actually utilize a real quick as opposed to the pedal that was super sensitive. These fundamentals such as foot placement really help.
At 13:25 I swear I started seeing stars and got an uncontrollable urge to go blast some disgustingly heavy downtuned chugs. That bass/snare combo really got me going

Thank you so much for this video… I just got my first Roland td 27 electric kit this week and I love metal. I got a double bass pedal and began drumeo. I totally set up my throne wrong and have been way too low. I tried the double bass pedal and it was impossible. Going to correct it now and use my heel up instead of down and hopefully the height will help too. I need to adjust my tension back down as another video I watched said crank that shot all the way up. No wonder my legs are so tired. I fall into the new drummer who is excited category so I did 8 hours of practice today and 6 yesterday. I guess I need to chill out lol much love man. Thank you again. I hope one day I can play demanufacture..
13:41 NON DOMINANT FOOT! I got a ton of practice using the non dominant foot WHILE DRIVING. Your right foot is busy on the gas pedal. Dominant foot ended up feeling natural after a while.
Damn, that was such a freaking good video! I gave up drums years ago, and never got to buy double bass pedals. Now that I am getting back into it, I had no idea what I was doing. Thank you so much for this content! I can't wait to check out more on this channel 🙂
yes playing with metronome live is so much better. it feels so much better. i only can admit that. we started with the band this year practising with metronom (well i told the band since 3 years i want to have a metronome in the band, but as a keyboarder/piano player i had to press hard on that). we played now 3 konzerts with metronome. the first one we had a bit of issue with the In-Ear devices, but we kinda handled it. This year we also finaly are recording our songs. so its also already a very usefull skill for the whole band to practise and play with metronome all the time.
My favorite tempo to start comfortably into getting faster double bass is 140 bpm. Just like how Dirk Verbeuren start off. Thomas Lang is also a great drummer who can actually do a paradiddle on the feet.
Thanks man. This video really helps with my technique I'm taking practice on. Lamb of God double bass action I'm trying to get to and advance to decide dead by dawn.
Im a funk / house music drummer but I ended up buying a double kick pedal from Trick Pedals for my TD50K2 and this video is still helpful for me. The double metal kick style slowed down to 120-130 is what I end up using in my tracks

Writing some patterns out will help you see when each individual foot should be playing (usually right on-beat and left off-beat) and should help out spreading the work load between both feet, making the difference in control between them smaller too. No need to write entire songs, just some parts or specific patterns should do the trick.

no bro,
I have just started playing double bass. I have just been alternating (except for paradiddle patterns) is this an incorrect technique?
@@keithbarnes9419 actually imo at least i find alternating every hit potentially better practice than only alternating for fast stuff, but it just kinda depends. I do feel like I wish I had started that earlier though, as if you get used to only alternating bass drums for fast stuff, it gets harder imo to play certain polyrhythms and rudiments and such
So I'd say you're good/ on the right track.
But when you don't overstep your abilites I can really take in what you say and believe in it. Been looking for a video on doubles that I can take in for all my life, today I finally found it.
Thank you! You reignited my creative flame!
Have to give you much credit! You’re not just an exellent drummer, but you teach at a level that’s going to help so many people! The world of drumming is a better place because of musicians like you. I don’t play really much anymore. I play a little guitar and bass as well. Guess I’m just getting tired an old. But man,God bless you and your method of helping and teaching! I’m subscribing cause you’re amazing. Thanks
wow, thank you so so much!!
@@66Samus you’re quite welcome. This is a little jam I did by myself. I’m nowhere in your league but I have fun on my instruments. Bass and guitar where fun. Drums too. But I play a loose style. I’d love to practice more and record some of my stuff. Wrote a lot in the Metal years I had. If u get time an can listen cool, an if u do listen an have tips I’d listen for advice. Anyway, thanks. God bless! ruclips.net/video/qSFjB6VEXuo/видео.html
I started here and come back to watch this intermittently on my journey to double bass. Still suck but getting better, and the more I learn the more I get out of this.
Thanks man.
Awesome content Samus, as always. Thanks so much for the lesson. Your teaching style is pretty righteous. Stay groovy.
I really like your drum teaching. I’m 67 years old and started playing drums again. You are and awesome drummer thank you for sharing your teaching
As someone who plays in a string orchestra, I'm very confident in saying that I have no idea why I'm watching this
Just moved from apartment life to buying my first home and I can now play drums again for the first time in years. This video has really helped me square myself away again. Particularly the tip about spring tension. I had my pedals adjusted way too tight for my current abilities.
Thanks for all you do.
This was one the most enjoyable double bass tutorials ive ever seen. Your comedy and technical knowledge is spot on. 🤘🏻
As someone whos has been playing for around 8 years on and off with no double bass once i stepped up to it my left foot was so uncoordinated and still kinda is and this video gave me alot of things to help work on to get better so thanks bro
Oh-ho-hoooooo YURRRRRRRRRR best DB tutorial ever. Practical, accessible advice.
Cheers from Italy🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻
thank you so much dude!! cheers from Canada :)
Great lesson for us OLD TIMERS.
WHO PLAYED DBL KICK. IN THE 70S..not much variety in those days..
Not many DRUMMERS played dbl in those days..so we have to relearn the muscle memory from so many yrs of playing a certain way..
This will definitely help with my technique and stamina when going
FASTER..THANKS SOO MUCH.
Hell yeah, playing to Rammstein is great. Great way to get tight and also get more creative
Love it
This man’s style and attitude are a blessing. Good human. Great musician. ☺️
I never thought that one day Jesus will teach me to play drum bit. But now it helped.. btw is this heaven?
I certainly needed this because I'm getting new pedals soon (Pearl Redline double bass) and on my current pedals I'm popcorn so thank you Samus, sex
when building a new skill, heres what i do.
Rock the fuck on \m/ >.< \m/
thank you so much dude!!!
Love it,the bottle of fireball on the desk to compliment too🤟
Plleeaasseee make a quote shirt that just says "You Can't Poop Without Peeing" - 66Samus lol
searching this gem for a very very long time, finally there's someone who tackled the whole double bass thing 👌
"for me it's about 180-200". This dude's sweet spot is many drummer's max speed. And then people wonder how he gets so fast...
and next thing you hear him say is "I suck, I can´t play it with both"..
mhm..yeah... you suck, totally... :P
Thanks!
thank you so much dude!!!
I knew Jesus would come back someday. However, I thought he'd save the world and not be teaching us drum lessons lol.
now THIS is an awesome video. I'm a drummer for, I don't know I guess it's 20 years now, but with a lot of _time during the pandemic, not playing and practicing_ ...
feeling that need to get behind the kit again, remembering a fake image of "how good I was, how easy it was, how natural it felt" just to realize - with no exercise, there's still gonna be a result; but I didn't like it and I'll continue to not like it until I get back to the basics.
and then the hairy drum lord comes along and drops a video easily accessible for everyone: my day enjoyment is unmeasurable and my day has been made.
dear mother dear father
What is this hell you have put me through
I played quite a bit of drums through middle and high school but only played punk rock so I was kind of anti-double pedal. Now I’m 40 and just bought drums and am focusing on developing my double kick technique. This video is helping quite a bit.
Being a guitar player who likes to tinker with drums, I really, really enjoyed this.
2minutes in the vid and I already consider you a legend. Love the energy!
you are too kind lol, thank you
Great video dude.
I'm a piano and euphonium player. All of these tips are great. You sir, are a true teacher (AND FREAKING HILARIOUS)!
I hate when it sounds like the drums are computer programmed.
thank you for appreciating this :)
double bass sounds so satisfying, but to make it satisfying this video is great for it
I'm actually a deathcore vocalist and i can't play drums but i fucking love your videos man. You're such a fun metal head is hard not to love you
thank you so much dude!!
Thanks for the lessons my man!
hell yeah dude!! thank YOU
have fun with the double kicks :)
This tutorial is worth its weight in gold. Thank you, Samus! 🙌 🥁
You seem like such a cool genuine dude and I appreciate that a lot when watching your content. Thank you man 🤙
Your humor is awesome and to just have that laughter while I practice is soothing and helps me to perfect. A+ brotha
I replaced the springs on my iron cobras with really thick ones from the hardware store once..
Helped with the speed, but there was a little bounce back on the single kick parts. A wise drumming master you are Samus!!!
These are 100% solid points. I had to practice a lot to get my heeltoe triplet feel going, but it's just a must. Control always goes ahead.
I started drumming two years ago and just upgraded to an Alesis surge kit and this is my first time having to actually utilize a real quick as opposed to the pedal that was super sensitive. These fundamentals such as foot placement really help.
My first time seeing this guy . Absolutely hilarious and a fantastic drummer.
thank you so much dude!!!
you’re like a drum wizard. thank you sm bro i been wanting to switch genres and that means im gonna have to learn a double kick 😂 metal seems so fun
At 13:25 I swear I started seeing stars and got an uncontrollable urge to go blast some disgustingly heavy downtuned chugs. That bass/snare combo really got me going
Being talented is one thing which you are. You are insanely talented. But your passion for drumming and music in general has no rival! I really appreciate everything you do! I know you have to sacrifice your own time to create your content but know friend we understand how life goes and we are so glad you make us a part of your life.i just hope you make enough to keep your personal life comfortable! Thank you for making us feel like family! Much love bro! I blew you a kiss but farts don't travel that far!
Thank you bearded drummer jesus, this gave me a new perspective on practice. Hopefully ill be able to join a band again as soon as i get out of the army.
I don’t even play drums or ever plan to, but I watch every one of your videos!! You’re very enjoyable to watch and love your knowledge and passion!
I started playing drums a few month ago and now i got my double bass kick pedals as well. Such an awesome video, not only for double bass drumming but in general for learning drums ! Thanks!
So great tip at 17:50 ❣️This is so important. No one needs injuries of the musician life or a depression 😮
Dude, your playing touch is fantastic. I see so many playing as hard as they possibly can, and into the drum…all the time. Fantastic!
Dominant foot ended up feeling natural after a while.
the quiet kicks might be the one and only video sponsor that i might buy
Damn, that was such a freaking good video! I gave up drums years ago, and never got to buy double bass pedals. Now that I am getting back into it, I had no idea what I was doing. Thank you so much for this content! I can't wait to check out more on this channel 🙂
cheers my dude :) thank you!
@@66Samus Heck yeah! Thank you 🙂 Your videos are fun, but not too wild, and very informative!
yes playing with metronome live is so much better. it feels so much better. i only can admit that. we started with the band this year practising with metronom (well i told the band since 3 years i want to have a metronome in the band, but as a keyboarder/piano player i had to press hard on that). we played now 3 konzerts with metronome. the first one we had a bit of issue with the In-Ear devices, but we kinda handled it.
Glad i found your video, it inspires me and that 'Do it now' and 14:51 resonated with me so much Thnx.
Thanks man. This video really helps with my technique I'm taking practice on. Lamb of God double bass action I'm trying to get to and advance to decide dead by dawn.
This is the best bass drumming video in the history of the lands.
Im a funk / house music drummer but I ended up buying a double kick pedal from Trick Pedals for my TD50K2 and this video is still helpful for me. The double metal kick style slowed down to 120-130 is what I end up using in my tracks
