I am not kidding, as soon as you cut the holes in it, I thought "What if you got a snare that was just enough to keep the heads on?" Kinda reminds me of that one Eric Andre show clip where Hannibal Burress says 'you did it! You broke comedy down to its bare essentials!" REALLY COOL video! Great Job!
I actually have a friend who's got one of those. Even though I can't find where in my comment I alluded to that, I feel like that would be an odd idea for a video. "Drum heads with holes", but like...BIG holes...yeah...
always fun putting holes in things. i've never had luck with extra holes in snares, though. might need an acrylic inner shell,..... ... but actually, listening to the demo now, it doesn't sound as bad as i thought it would 🤔
I started because of rock band/guitar hero LOL. Those games really set my life in an awesome direction though. I never had a huge appreciation for music until I played those games.
Groovy experiment! Silly things like that do get the creative mind going, though. The ghost notes on the inside of the snare were killer! Thanks for all your hard work, sir!
I would like to see a thin to medium wrap around the shell to possibly hear a nice tone. Using the wrap to plug the holes without completely filling them in (theoretically) might give the snare a solid tone. I'm probably wrong, but would like to see it!
The Swiss cheese sounds WAY better than the original IMO. Also I liked the way you edited the part of the video where you drilled the holes in the snare. I thought it was pretty cool.
I liked how the original snare sound had at first. Nice and warm. With the holes, it had a nice bite and crack as well. After you cut out the holes, it does look cool, but it seemed too fragile. Nice video as always.
in college i saw a concert snare made out of PVC pipe, probably 5x13" or so. if you can get your hands of a scrap of that, you should definitely try doing that!
dw did something dumb and similar, check out the eq series snare! it has cuts in it that you can open with a general switch, but nobody bought it as everyone figured out it sounded like shit
Odery did it before DW did. John Blackwell's Tama snare also had something similar, with multiple vent holes plugged with corks that you could remove and change the sound.
Marty Hurley used a similar concept back in the late 70's and I think again in the early 90's with the Phantom drumline. Albeit slightly less extreme. They were some nice sounding drums, very crisp, cut through the horns nicely.
Looks like you now have some more Meinl love going on. Also, great video! Would love to see your take on ultra-light hardware and such. Thanks for lots of inspiration!
You could use reinforcements to strengthen the squares. Might be too much work for what it's worth but that way you can crank up the snare, the sound may change too.
Great video, David. 2 questions, though: 1) What crash were you using when you tested out the ‘skeleton’ snare? It was really trashy and dark, with a super short decay. 2) Do you have any albums out of your music, or just the sound cloud stuff? I’d love to promote it to my sphere of folks. Thanks and blessings, Aaron
I think the holes would be a good idea next the the bottom head or as slits right above where the area where the snares sit or just all around the bottom path of the drum. Do you think using a metal snare would project even more?
just a note on the headset: a lower impedance actualy means they use MORE power at the same setting. Sure, you get more sound from a lower setting, but they still use the same power for the same sound. (or a bit more...)
Holey moley! Quick tip on those hole saws, you have to kind of tap and peck at the surface with those because the teeth have very little space for chip buildup, and once you get a few mm below the surface there's no room for chip evacuation. Go in a couple quick passes and it will get through a lot faster and cooler.
I'd love to see you try to add a thin steel sheet around the inside or outside of this drum to complete the shell! Think of it like freaky hybrid snare with a wooden skeleton and a steel shell. Would prolly be a LOT of work but would def make an interesting video!
The one with the holes in and the skelesnare sound like a steel snare if you're not watching the video except it's relatively quiet, where as steel snares certainly aren't hushed

rdavidr this crash sucks
This was a good Vid can you respond also
rdavidr drill holes in the meinl bell?..
spøøky luis The one he is using in the video?? I thought the same thing lol I was just going to comment on how I hated the sound of his crash :D
I Think This Is A Good Drum To salvage for hardware exspealy because drum hardware is expensive
The editing of the different pitched drill sounds syncing with the beat will never fail to amuse me and make me laugh
I noticed that too.
It was amazing.
So awesome
At first I thought i tripping & then I was like yah that gotta be on purpose hahaha
Sounded like it was was following the chord changes more than the beat to me. But I could be wrong
Next video:
Turns a block of swiss cheese into a snare drum.
been done my friend
Brody Custer Where? If this is real I wanna see it
ruclips.net/video/JL9BrZ-zUpQ/видео.html
Brody Custer Thank you for opening my eyes to this man.
WHAAAAA???? hahaha
I love how the drilling syncs up with the music
Qonnor Anderson Yeah, his editing is fantastic.
Also... you can truly mic the side of the drum now.
BadChizzle put the mic inside the drum lol
Peripheral Vision only one? DOZENS
Peripheral Vision Yes! Why didn’t I think of that?! Ha ha
That’s a smart idea ima make a snare hole rn
BadChizzle I’ll tell u how it sounds
I more prefer the Swiss cheese snare drum to the normal one. Oh, and you should try to make a wheel rim into a snare drum.
NumberNEINLarge do it david!
THAT would be cool
I was hoping for more cheese in the video. DISAPPOINTED!
I was expecting a "make a drumset out of cheese" comment tbh...DISAPPOINTED!
Dangit!! I missed the golden opportunity!
Doesn't sound like Swiss cheese. DISAPPOINTED!!
Hahaha perfect.
Drum Beats Online just look at my face. All the cheese u need.
I actually like the sounds of the skelesnare
Danny M. Except too much ring from the snares
J MonMon that’s the point you, whatever what’s the point of explaining
Tentacles45 because u don’t have a fucking explanation
Drum tech: boys we have to travel lightweight
David: hold my beer
Lol
I like it. Would make a great auxiliary snare. I think it sounds much better than it did unmolested and is a cool addition to your arsenal.
Judas Maccabeus “unmolested” 😂
Judas Maccabe
"De-flowered"
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the fact that the video cuts are in sync with the beat. Excellent video yet again!
You should do a trash can snare!
You misspelled "St. Anger Snare".
Lars called, he wants his joke back
Been there, done that.
PineappleGator 🤣👍
You should channel your inner Peter Brown and fill the holes with resin!
good idea ;) i would like to see it
peter brown is god
Superandrd or make a collab!
That would awesome
Superandrd I Had on Mind exactly the same! will be great
I love that the drill noises are in time with the background music
You’ve done 100 rivets in a cymbal, but what about 100 rivets in a snare drum?
Nate Campese yes!!!
Two things!
1. That drum looked and sounded good with the round holes cut in it.
2. I got a cheese ad while watching this video lol 😂🧀🧀🤘🏻
The way you edited the holes with their different drilling tones to match the song was awesome!!!
I am not kidding, as soon as you cut the holes in it, I thought "What if you got a snare that was just enough to keep the heads on?" Kinda reminds me of that one Eric Andre show clip where Hannibal Burress says 'you did it! You broke comedy down to its bare essentials!"
REALLY COOL video! Great Job!
Dude, there's already a head with holes in it. The Evans HD Dry.
I actually have a friend who's got one of those.
Even though I can't find where in my comment I alluded to that, I feel like that would be an odd idea for a video. "Drum heads with holes", but like...BIG holes...yeah...
Cave story pfp detected
always fun putting holes in things. i've never had luck with extra holes in snares, though. might need an acrylic inner shell,..... ... but actually, listening to the demo now, it doesn't sound as bad as i thought it would 🤔
...oh...well, r.i.p swiss cheese snare; you looked cool while you lasted.
Its sounds better with the holes honestly
Your the reason I started dum set and now
Play in a jazz band for schoo
English please
C N VLOGS Dum set for schoo
I started because of rock band/guitar hero LOL. Those games really set my life in an awesome direction though. I never had a huge appreciation for music until I played those games.
U should spend your time at schoo learning English
Aw fellas leave him alone
Will forever enjoy how he syncs the drills with the music 👌
Put some moon gel on that thing and it would sound very good
How to lighten up you gig kit
KEMP MONAGHAN lol
With the drill matching the music. Love it.
I like the way you matched some of the drill sounds to the music
Groovy experiment! Silly things like that do get the creative mind going, though. The ghost notes on the inside of the snare were killer! Thanks for all your hard work, sir!
I LOVE that the pitch of the drilling was kinda in key with the music :D
I greatly appreciate the drilling matching the beat and even the tune of the song.
Your channel honestly got me inspired to play kit again and I’ve never been happier :)
One of the most creative drummers on youtube, if not the most.
Love that you tuned the drilling audio to the track. Nice one.
You should take out the 100 rivets out of the cymbal and play it like that.
Swiss cheese snare with Swiss cheese cymbals.
The swiss cheese sound looks very nice actually!
Always love how u edit the power tools to the beat
Just btw, I LOVED the way that you edited this along with the music when you were drilling the holes!! Love your videos, keep it up!
I would like to see a thin to medium wrap around the shell to possibly hear a nice tone. Using the wrap to plug the holes without completely filling them in (theoretically) might give the snare a solid tone. I'm probably wrong, but would like to see it!
I fucking love you. Mainly because you MATCH THE TOOL SOUNDS TO THE MUSIC AAAAA GENIUS
The Swiss cheese sounds WAY better than the original IMO.
Also I liked the way you edited the part of the video where you drilled the holes in the snare. I thought it was pretty cool.
😘
Haha I like how the saw sounds with the synced music 😋😋😋
Oh hey rdavidr I was wondering if you could create some marching percussion?
Thoughts on it?
EvanVlogging Slack yes please
Yeah like I know he is more of a kit drummer but I know some people have marching snares on their kits.
I just think it would be interesting.
Or tenor (quad) drums as toms and spocks for Octo-Heads
I lean towards tenors mostly because I marched them for 3 years lol but I'm curious to hear a marching snare on his kit as well
sTxVengeance I see it some tenors would be nice but the spocks would be interesting to see.
I comment this on every video
Allen Mathew 😂😂
Same
You should fill the squares in with a light material like paper or plastic. I would love to hear how that sounds!
i love the editing matching the song!
the finish on that drum is so gorgeous
your pattern had me in a trance- snare sounds dope
42 strand snare wire, Remo fiberskyn batter, side mic and add reverb. BOOM!
Super light weight snare drum. I like it !!
You made the drilling musical, and I appreciate that
I liked how the original snare sound had at first. Nice and warm. With the holes, it had a nice bite and crack as well. After you cut out the holes, it does look cool, but it seemed too fragile. Nice video as always.
Hey David. I've been watching your videos for a while. All I wanna say is I like what you do and keep it up
THAT SOUNDS SICK!!! I've just binge watched a bunch of your videos, and now I'm subbed. You're a sick lad
That seriously looks amazing as the skeleton! I like it!! Makes me want to do the same thing with a budget snare haha
Love the way you edited this.
I actually like the after sound with the holes!!! Sounds nice
What would happen if you put moongels on the reso side head, but from the inside of the shell?
lol my bad didn't finish the video.
I like how he timed the drilling clips with the music
in college i saw a concert snare made out of PVC pipe, probably 5x13" or so. if you can get your hands of a scrap of that, you should definitely try doing that!
The gutted snare was an awesome idea! You should make a snare out of a floor tom next!
Make a snare shell with mini trap doors. that way you can switch back and forth from a standard sound to a skeleton sound easily.
dw did something dumb and similar, check out the eq series snare! it has cuts in it that you can open with a general switch, but nobody bought it as everyone figured out it sounded like shit
Odery did it before DW did. John Blackwell's Tama snare also had something similar, with multiple vent holes plugged with corks that you could remove and change the sound.
I was just about to say "I bet blast beats would be super easy with that!" Then what do you know! You always come through Dave! 🙌🏽
Cheese drum
All the way! I love the sound of it!!! So full and big.
Your editing skills get better with every video. Love it
I was already crazy about its sound when you were drillinnnnnnnnnnnnn.. freshhh
The drum actually sounds better with less who knew I also like how you play inside the drum when you opened it up
Your drum hacks have ligit saved hundred's of dollars thank so much
Make a holey drum set, man! GO! ALL! THE! WAY!!
Nice one! This are the kind of videos that we want to see!
When you drum you look so comfortable like you don’t even break a sweat
loved the vid! I think for another video it'd be cool if you demoed the port holes for toms or snare, or try to recreate the low volume cymbals
Marty Hurley used a similar concept back in the late 70's and I think again in the early 90's with the Phantom drumline. Albeit slightly less extreme. They were some nice sounding drums, very crisp, cut through the horns nicely.
That skeleton snare's just begging to have a mic shoved right inside it! Really fun experiment, and it may not be over yet~
haha pretty rad, didnt sound as bad as i expected
love the videos man, keep up the good work
Looks like you now have some more Meinl love going on. Also, great video!
Would love to see your take on ultra-light hardware and such. Thanks for lots of inspiration!
*That editing tho* 😍😍😍
i love your editing and how its in time with the music, you should make a song using different sounds from around your workshop!
You could use reinforcements to strengthen the squares. Might be too much work for what it's worth but that way you can crank up the snare, the sound may change too.
Great video, David. 2 questions, though:
1) What crash were you using when you tested out the ‘skeleton’ snare? It was really trashy and dark, with a super short decay.
2) Do you have any albums out of your music, or just the sound cloud stuff? I’d love to promote it to my sphere of folks.

Aaron
I think the holes would be a good idea next the the bottom head or as slits right above where the area where the snares sit or just all around the bottom path of the drum. Do you think using a metal snare would project even more?
What if you put some clear plastic or resin and put LED lights in the snare? That might give it its resonance back and make it look really cool!
I really liked how that went to the music
I’ve always wanted to do that to mine but would hesitate but now that you did it the little voice on my shoulder is gone thanks man
THIS is the reason we subscribe to rDavidr
just a note on the headset: a lower impedance actualy means they use MORE power at the same setting. Sure, you get more sound from a lower setting, but they still use the same power for the same sound. (or a bit more...)
Nice. The skeleton snare looks pretty cool
You should be try to make diy low volume cymbals
I liked the results! Nice job!
The Swiss cheese drum has a great pingy resonance with the hard hits that makes it sound perfect for drum and bass beats imho
New cymbals? Love your work david, keep up the good vids!
Sounds like a steel shell snare , I like it!!
I'd love to see you try to add a thin steel sheet around the inside or outside of this drum to complete the shell! Think of it like freaky hybrid snare with a wooden skeleton and a steel shell. Would prolly be a LOT of work but would def make an interesting video!
Hi! Have you recorded with the mic inside the snare? Cheers from Brazil!
Dave - you should go to NAMM next year and try to land some sponsorships
It may become a nice little percusion -> with some jingles. Also, you should paint it white on the outside and black on the inside (for skeleton look)
Love the holes sounds much more than the non hole version.
Actually sounds great before and after .... Great job yet again 👍
When he is drilling the holes, it sounds like the drill is playing notes along with the song
jesterman 37 it was dope
The one with the holes in and the skelesnare sound like a steel snare if you're not watching the video except it's relatively quiet, where as steel snares certainly aren't hushed
lol.. the tuned drill is dope... i actually like the new sound of the snare waaaaay better than before
