I firsf heard this in Benidorm back in 2000. I bought the album on CD at Manchester Airport and played it on a rainy day, best rainy day of my life. Brilliant album "Equally cursed and blessed. " Love it. ❤️💕❤️
Been listening to this for over 20 years and it is still as beautiful as ever! What happened to music....this was so real and melancholy but also uplifting and thought provoking.
Absolutely. Takes me back to so many times and phases in my life. Loss, lostness, stress, stressing, happiness and learning to make do and be happy with what you have.
"You're too far gone to even care" is the line I remember as having the most effect on me when this song came out and it's still as relevant to me today as it was back then.
99%sure it was Mark(Roberts) but Cerys could’ve helped out significantly such is her vision. Mark is a Welsh Legend with his 38year career punpointing Welsh couplets into shot glasses and pubs of flooded areas of rural Wales . He now records as “Mr” and “Y Pwysau” from 2018 proved to be a launch blast off for a four album resurgence which i have failed to keep up with. Worth learning Cymraeg for though. Sorry for rabbit-ting on🙂make hay !
Hi Alex I played this song 4 or 5 times since Sunday night 1998 the song was released with coronavirus going on stress anxiety depressed this song nearly brings a tear to my eye I like Cerys the dress she is wearing in the video still sounds good in 2021
@@ElcoCanon Well, she is Welsh and is known for singing in a broad Welsh accent. She undeniably has a strong Welsh accent in her singing voice. How can you possibly not hear it?
You're welcome. Yes go see her, I hear she likes people to come chat to her and if I were her I wouldn't want people to be scared of me, I'd love them to chat to me about what they love about what I do. That's who you do it for. The secret is not to see any human being as greater then you, even the royals, and talk to them on a normal level, we're all equal human beings on earth, no difference whatsoever but media paints a picture of musicians etc as being something special when really they're not. And if you achieve great things in something, Cerys could equally be charmed by you so next time just confidently go up and say hello and that you enjoy what she does, life's too short not to tell people how you feel and I think she would really be flattered. 😊
The sun is shining We should be making hay But we're dead from the waist down Like in Californ-I-A Victory is empty There are lessons in defeat But we're dead from the waist down We are sleeping on our feet We stole the songs from birds in trees Bought us time on easy street Now our paths, they never meet We chose to court and flatter greed, ego disposability I caught a glimpse, and it's not me Make hay not war Make hay not war Make hay not war Or else we're done for And we're D from the W down There's no contracts binding No bad scene beyond repair But when you're dead from the waist down You're too far gone to even care We stole the songs from birds in trees Bought us time on easy street Now our paths, they never meet We chose to court and flatter greed, ego disposability I caught a glimpse, and it's not me Make hay not war Make hay not war Make hay not war Or else we're done for And we're D from the W down Make hay not war Make hay not war Make hay not war Or else we're done for And we're D from the W down And we're D from the W down And we're D from the W down And we're D from the W down And we're D from the W down The sun is shining The sun is shining
Around the time of this release, I remember Suede/Brett Anderson saying they wanted to make a record that sounded like Glen Campbell's "Wichita Lineman" - looking back, I think Cerys and co got there first. Just gorgeous.
This song. This song. And the vid expresses the idea perfectly. It's the first I've seen it. This is one of the most influential songs there ever has been in my life. I've seen Cerys sing live twice, once at a venue at Birmingham's Bull Ring; and once Union Chapel at Highbury&Islington Corner. At the second, she was signing CDs for her new album (not enough listened to), and I didn't have the bravery or the nouse (or the chutzpah or brass neck or whaddeveryacallit) to speak to her. Boo hoo. Sob. Twinkle. Sob.
That's a shame. She seems so lovely but I have never had the chance to see her live. Don't hold back next time to meet her, she's just another person, they shouldn't make you nervous. She's achieved great things in music but is not any different to you and I and what's the worst that can happen? I'm sure she'd appreciate it.
She's a radio DJ and helps run outdoor festivals in Wales now. She still sings and writes music but in her hey day with Catatonia this was a very long time ago. I always thought this song was so sweet with the farm animals and country life but Cerys has a great confidence and charm which is very attractive in a character.
Requested this on our local radio station BOB FM. DJs response was "I'd rather live in Rhyl than play that crap". Still, he is a scouser, so what does he know about music?
tsk... plenty scousers in rhyl anyway - what's he talking about? And scousers sound the way the do because of the welsh! sorry you got fobbed off. I'd forgotten about this, but was lucky to have this chosen for me by Eleri on Radio Wales for girlfriend's birthday. I should request it again sometime for you mate *

This song was a melancholic farewell to Britpop.
Great song from a great era. Wish I could go back in time to the late 90s.
If you know someone named John Titor, go find him, he will help you
My youth. Damn it, why am I suddenly nearly half a century old and with just about one thrid of lifetime to go if we are lucky?
Amen, brother.
Absolutely, there was an edginess to the era that the snowflakes would not tolerate now.
I've been looking for this song for 20 years and finally found it. The best memorable song, I really want to go back to the 90s era
Me too! I couldn't remember the name, I have been looking for 20+ years! This is my teenage memory.
You'd make a terrible detective.
Oh if I could go back to days when we had music like this.
Very rare to find music like this these days.
We still have music like this. You are listening to it right now. Music is present while it's played.
Or music in general
Great lyrics: "we chose to court and flatter greed, ego disposability, I caught a glimpse and it's not me"
No lust in the lyrics. Make hay not war else your done for
IceCat7 what’s wrong with that?
Absolutely beautiful. Breaks my heart to see people in thrall to dumb 'talent' shows when this kind of wondrousness is available.

true that sis
stil plenty of good music out there, just have to look a bit harder.
@@lukenardoni2454 i look and find...back them the whole chart was gold and lesser bands stood a chance
Absolutely. Takes me back to so many times and phases in my life. Loss, lostness, stress, stressing, happiness and learning to make do and be happy with what you have.
Less interesting youth makes less interesting music.
I have always thought Cerys had a unique voice that was truly wonderful.
Great band they were I think 😊
This brings back memories of my adolescence. Was a big fan of Catatonia back in the day and Cerys has such a lovely sweet voice.
Extraordinarily underrated
I know!
I was gonna say that!
This song is a masterpiece!!!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩
"You're too far gone to even care" is the line I remember as having the most effect on me when this song came out and it's still as relevant to me today as it was back then.
90's a time when people were atrative for being unique and making music that touches the soul
Who ever wrote this song deserves a medal........ Superb lyrics!

An absolute masterpiece from such an underrated band (who never made a bad record, from the For Tinkerbell EP all the way to Paper Scissors Stone)
Underrated classic. Great memories from 1999 when life wasn't as serious.
Cerys is one of the few women I would go straight for, beautiful and a good voice.
One of the few woman I'd go gay for so we have something in common ❤😊
It will forever remind me of listening to Capital FM in my room at night in the summer of 1999.
Brilliant song/video and Cerys voice.
Cerys Matthews is a very talented woman and that was a real fine song from the group, only reached No.7 in the UK back in April 1999.
It still baffles me how this wasn't no1 in the UK chart 😏.
oasis and blur invasion for you :p who can top them?
The whole band is talented I think. Haven't seen this video for ages. Still play their stuff. Even now I still do.
1999 absolute classic.
I think Cerys had a lovely voice which I also think was quite distinct too.Truly a great band 🙂
Love this song. Cerys is still tops! The old chap in this video is the late, John Scott Martin - a former Dalek operator on Dr Who in the Sixties:-)
John's dead? Sorry to hear. RIP.
Oh wow I was not expecting that... R.I.P. to him
Still watch and love this 2019 who else?

Beautiful lady. Powerfull song with such potent lyrics. Open your ears people. My love is yours Cerys..
one of my fav bands of the 90,s
Bring back memory of my first Windows 98 PC, that included this song..oh such a lovely late 90’s memories
Haven't listened to this for about ten years. Got it from Woolworths as a cassette single. Still have no idea what it means but it's a corker!
I really miss Woolies, that's when the high street started to die when those doors closed.
Its about the world we live in, greed and money overriding everything else......there's still a few of us that have "seen a glimpse and it's not me"
It's about how denying your humanity is corrosive to the soul and life in general.
cant tell you how much i love this song
I still think about a girl singing this one night in Mallorca in 1999. I have no idea who she was but it was beautiful.
short and sweet gorgeous voice cerrys no man could be d from w down listening to her voice 😀
what a beautiful voice......
Love her singing in such a strong Welsh accent. It must be other-wordly listening to it from a non British-Isles country.
I can't hear her Welsh accent at all, what makes you say so
@@ElcoCanon Well, she is Welsh and is known for singing in a broad Welsh accent. She undeniably has a strong Welsh accent in her singing voice.

@@ElcoCanon How can you not hear it?! You absolute contrarian, haha.
What does other-wordly mean please?
It was, and is.
I remember this playing in the canteen in college back in 1999 when I was 18 years old, now I'm nearly 40. What the hell happened?
Similar age …I feel this. I cannot grasp how this has happened.
Haha one minute your a teenager and the next you feel like you are getting old
Time flew by. But the music stays fresh in our minds, like it was only yesterday. Just wish it could a start again tomorrow. ❤️👍
Times what happened 😕 how the worlds changed since 1999 tho
@@NoddyAlba The western world has become less free since 1999 unfortunately.

Cerys will always be a beautiful lady inside and out. 💙
This record is part of my top three singles of the year, because it keeps helping my spirit. Thank you, all Catatonia, fore this marvellous song.
I just suddenly had an urge to listen to this. Bought the cd years ago...
I love, love, love this song!
Campervan Mike
Cerys had quite an effect on me as a young man in this video!
We all know what she means by 'making hay'....powerful message here
Brilliant, brilliant song
This was one of my favorite tracks in high school but I have actually never seen the video for this. Cool beans
The sun is shining
We should be making hay
But we're dead from the waist down
Like in Californ-I-A
Victory is empty
There are lessons in defeat
But we're dead from the waist down
We are sleeping on our feet
We stole the songs from birds in trees
Bought us time on easy street
Now our paths, they never meet
We chose to court and flatter greed, ego disposability
I caught a glimpse, and it's not me
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Or else we're done for
And we're D from the W down
There's no contracts binding
No bad scene beyond repair
But when you're dead from the waist down
You're too far gone to even care
We stole the songs from birds in trees
Bought us time on easy street
Now our paths, they never meet
We chose to court and flatter greed, ego disposability
I caught a glimpse, and it's not me
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Or else we're done for
And we're D from the W down
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Make hay not war
Or else we're done for
And we're D from the W down
And we're D from the W down
And we're D from the W down
And we're D from the W down
And we're D from the W down
The sun is shining

This keeps popping in my head randomly. Memories from age 8. 🤣
28 for me, but same.
And Cerys Matthews is doing her best not to pop out of that dress for 😂😂😂
This song has a mid-1970s groove!
What a lovely song.
This takes me back.

2022 and I still listen to this.

Very relaxing music....
Great bass playing on this track
My wife wanted to point out that Cerys' clothing is inappropriate for farm work.
Nonsense man, don't believe her
:)))
Did you tell her..."Mind Ya Business!" ?
farming is best done naked while on acid.
😂
