Chaos89P If I dropped 80$ on a book, then I'd sure as hell make sure that I got my money back if it didn't come withing a year (honestly about two and a half months would be my cap)
+Jordan3D I remember ordering a $30 Whimsicott plush from a guy in China. Delivery was supposed to take no more than two weeks. When it didn't show up, I came to grips with the fact that it wan't coming. I got a refund from the seller--neither of us knew what happened to the product. Nearly two months later, a cuddly Pokemon showed up unexpectedly in my mailbox. I was satisfied. =]
I had a friend in grade school with a Mario Bros. Game & Watch, one where the characters load crates into a truck. At the time, it was a very cool thing! I even remember using the alarm clock to wake myself up for Saturday morning cartoons.
Game & Watches were ubiquitous in our house because my dad would take business trips to various parts of Asia a lot and bring them back in the early 80's. We must have had about 20 of them. They actually were treated very poorly, like pressing your thumbs on the screen to see the rainbow effect it would have and using biros to push the tiny alarm buttons that got caked with blue ink. I only have two left, the orange Donkey Kong and Mickey and Donald dual screens which are in pretty good condition. The rest have been scattered amongst siblings and lost in most cases. Also, remember kids, *always keep the boxes*.
theinstigatorr I don't think millenials care much about anything any longer except being superficial. They're one of the most vapid generations to have ever existed.
Has anyone reached out to them to see if a digital version is ever coming out? I'm not much for collecting physical books but I'd love to buy it for Kindle.
If it wasn't for the fact that 1) I live in NYC and was able to go to the Nintendo Store and see one of the "Game and Watch" hardware and 2) there are videos about the "Game and Watch" from Nintendo, I would've sworn that the Game Boy was their first handheld hardware back when I was a teenager. Thanks Gaming Historian, you did it again!
Though I've ever owned only one Game & Watch (Donkey Kong Jr.), it was the first video game device I ever had, so it has a very special place in my heart. I might check this book out, I hope the shipping costs aren't that bad when ordering inside of EU.
I adore the Game and Watch series. I've been able to collect a handful of them over the last few years. This book is a must have. Already ordered. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
Nice! I have that green Donkey Kong, Jr. Game & Watch on my bookshelf; it's two years older than I am. I also vaguely recall having a Super Mario Brothers one ages ago. It flipped open, and the goal was to make sure oil drums (or bricks?) went into the right place on a conveyor belt...reminiscent of "Root Beer Tapper" with a factory setting.
I can't think of another channel that has made such a unbelievable jump in quality. Your older videos are great and I still enjoy them but Wow recently you have really gone the extra mile. I wish you the best of luck and success with your channel.
Shirley Fulkord Well this kind of stuff isn't mainstream or even that entertaining. Usually factual content gets buried by shitty "funny" shit like pewdiepie.
MadFinnTech I agree but look at Did you know gaming. They do they same and they have tons of subscribers. Gaming Historian deserves just as many subs as them
Hi. For folks who really are into this , wasnt this video just worth it . It could be a 'sale' as you proposed , but I came across this only via this channel and without this I would not even know what I was missing. So a Big Thanks to 'Gaming Historian' for this aka 'sales pitch.' ....& No , I did not get any kickbaks on writing this :D
I used to LOVE game and watches. Climber, balloon fight and Donkey kong jnr. were the best, thumbs up if you agree. Also interestingly these three were all just a single screen G&W. I don't think I've seen all sixty of these devices but probably over half of them I've seen, they were quality devices.
I really enjoy your book reviews. I think you are the only channel with good production value that make them. As a video games books collector, i thank you ^^
Norm, i really think that one day you should make a series of books of the nintendo History, you'd be perfect for that, and i would buy them in a second. I really would like to see the gaming historian in an editorial form :)
I knew a few kids that had Game & Watches years ago, even played a few as a kid but never owned any myself, it's nice that it has a fully functional clock with alarm that wasn't just a gimmick.
I just got in my hardcover copy of this book, and it looks spectacular. The raised areas on the front and back as well as the overall quality is well worth it.
The guys who made this are from Vienna, Austria. As i am Austrian too, I might give this one a go. It's about 45 dollars here or 65 for the hardcover. Thanks for sharing this Norm.
Great video, I love Game and Watch! And books about Nintendo! I may have to track this down. Surprised to hear about the trouble you've had with Pix n' Love Publishing. I've gotten 3 of their books and have not had any troubles. That being said, I've always pre-ordered them, so it's always been at least a 6 month wait before I've actually gotten them...
Have you covered "The Encyclopedia Of Game Machines" yet? I can't find a video on it, nor even a mention in your past works. Didn't know if you had a copy or were even aware of it's existence. It's another german book ( small series, actually ) that was translated to english long after initial release!
I had Super Mario Bros. and Mario's Cement Factory on Game & Watch, long before I got a Gameboy. I loved those games. I had SMB down to a science- could practically beat it with my eyes closed. I wish I knew what happened to them. My best guess is they were lost to the years of moving around. Since then, I've bought the G&W Galleries for Gameboy. Awesome. Each cart contains both original and modern versions of each game, and those are freakin' sweet, too. Although, motion blur can be a problem on original Gameboy screens, so I recommend the SP or Super Gameboy. (Emulators work too, but you should own the carts first, ya know, just to be legal and all, lol.)
Nintendo should make a video game based on Game & Watch; you could customize you're Mr. Game & Watch with costumes and color pallets, decorate you're house, solve puzzles and play minigames. This game should be like Little Big Planet.
2p boxing…… only played it twice at grandmas house years ago, And i was so young, i couldn’t tell it was LCD, i swore it was a next level gameboy with dot matrix graphics, but in the heat of the game, you didn’t notice
I really enjoy your channel! All of this really takes me back, and this video is no exception. I seem to remember Game & Watch Donkey Kong being my first experience with handheld gaming, something that I continue to enjoy to this day. Thanks for all your great work!
Thats a cool book even with its flaws,i remember when i was a kid i had G&W like donkey kong, popeye etc and i really had great time with them ,i used them also for watches and alarms for waking up for school lol,ohh the sweet old days !!thank you mate for this cool vid and hope you are well !
Great video! I've been interested in starting the journey of tracking down all the different Game & Watch systems, and now I think I'll start that journey by checking out this book. Thank you!
I have the widescreen Super Mario Bro's Game and Watch. Got it new as my first video game, ever. Somehow it survived my childhood, and it is still in 100% working condition, though it shows years of use, of course.
I knew the G&W where really popular back in the day but i never realised how popular. I remember buying one from a market when i was younger a mario bro's one i bought it for 50p, i dont know if i still have it or not. I would be amazing to see in the future if you do ever expand your collection a little video showing what you have and what the games are like
Damn, this reminded me of how the Donkey Kong Jr Table Top was my most wanted for a good couple of years but I never saw it anywhere. The pain has come flooding back, I still want one!
Cool book. I have the G&W where they load the boxes into the truck. Had it since a child and it's still super mint. I don't think this one is rare though. Nice to own though.
Do they have a section that explains about "Game & Clock" being a knock off products of "Game and Watch"? I see a bunch of those in a flea market here in Australia, and I have been wondering ever since.
Damn, I want that book. Was a big fan of Game & Watch when I was a kid. Only have 1 left now, The Donkey Kong II one. It's a Dual screen games and quite a lot of fun. I discovered a couple of years ago that I had never removed the protective plastic from the top of it so the shiny bronze top is still scratch free. Even have the instructions, although I went and spilled tea on them at some point. Whoops. One of my favourites as a kid was the Super Mario one which was an early attempt at a side scrolling platformer. it was pretty similar to how the majority of endless runner games are designed these days with lanes to jump into and obstacles to dodge. There was also a cool Donkey Kong one that had 2 control pads one wires that detached from the unit that a friend of mine had.
I love the book, yet the descriptions are sometimes quite shallow to my taste. For example, I am lacking information, such as how to turn off the sound (every unit had its unique way) and if it was possible in the first place (only later units allowed muting sound).
I played the game Nu pogodi. It's a russian clone where you're a wolf (volk) and you have to catch eggs while the rabbit (zayets) kept an eye on your performance. There was a game A and B. gets pretty hard after a little play
basically this kinda sums up my opinion on old school video game collecting now; it would be nice to collect game and watches, but they are very expensive and very rare. I have only ever seen 1 game and watch in 8 years in the wild before, and that is why i only have 1 game and watch, it's Mario Bros (1983).
Very, very cool. I still have my old Mario Bros. I used to think they stopped making these in like '85 or '86 until I was playing these on the GBA. You should check that out too. It also gives some information on the games
Still waiting on that next stream =) no rush just joking, but in all seriousness I really enjoyed your Wiley Wars stream and would like to see what else you pull out of left field! As always great work man.
This book is great, but i have two minor complains with the German edition. First of all: there are no screenshots from the actual gameplay. it´s either blank screen or all elements (reset). Also, there´s a little logical error with the rarety-list: the re-released game "Ball" is considered ultra-rare without the box, because it´s almost never sold without it :) I wonder wether or not this has been corrected in the English edition? Still: the book is a must-buy!!
Sorry to hear that you never received "History of Nintendo Volume #2." I managed to find a copy, in the wild - at a comic/video game store, earlier this year, at cover price. I am more excited for Volume #3, if it is ever released, as it will cover the GameBoy.
I'm curious why the Game & Watch doesn't seem as popular as it should. According to Wikipedia, they sold over 40 million units but I never heard of the game and watch as a kid and don't know anyone who had one back in the 80s. I have a friend who currently has some but why weren't they as well knowns as the Tiger hand held games or the Atari 2600?
Great review! 👍 I'm an avid Nintendo G&W collector as well and have them all boxed. As well as, many Nintendo G&W flyers & merchandise. However, I'm still missing "Headache" (British version of Helmet). My collection lacks also NOA Pocket Size series (which I'm giving serious thoughts to collect them!) Having that said, there are distributors' names which were imposed on the G&W consoles (such as, CGL, MEGO, J.i 21... etc). But, I'm not sure if I'm going to hunt them!
I got a copy of The History of Nintendo Vol 2 by finding one at a game store out of pure luck. I too bought one from the publisher, and still haven't received from them, even after repeated emails complaining about it.
Could you do a episode on the Nintendo sattleview? I think that's how it spelled.. Anyway it would be interesting for you to talk about because of the Zelda games made for it and the other forgotten expansions for F-Zeros
Norman, I found The History of Nintendo on amazon for $473-$1153 Volume 1 used and $195-370 for Volume 2 used. Believe it or not the Spanish version of the very same books, La Historia de Nintendo, are $25 each NEW. I got myself both and will check them out. Thank God I am bilingual LOL
Oh wow thanks for sharing this, that book looks super sweet. Shame about Pix N Love Publishing though... it took me a whole year to get History of Nintendo Vol.1 from them... I have no idea where my order is for Vol.2... Hopefully it shows up soon for you.
I remember finding one of these in the early 90s at my aunts house an having no clue what it was for decades literally. Thanks to the Internet an RUclips in particular now I for one have a much more vast knowledge of intersteing and sometimes rare gaming artifacts.
Hi everyone! I'm working on another big episode, so in the meantime, please enjoy this look at a great little book all about the Game & Watch.
You uploaded this while im in school. And i still watched it. Your videos are awesome.
***** I had the DK junior one when i was a kid.. spent hours playing it (altho the little cell batteries weren't that easy to get for a kid that age).
***** Nice one :) I speak german so Yeah :D
***** what is the shirt you wearing?
***** Hey is the german version expensive. What is the german titel?
I could judge it!
Mr. Game & Watch What you did there, I see it. Hats off to you sir.
***** NEIN!
+Mr. Game & Watch Can we get a 9?
+Mr. Game & Watch LOL
Mr game and watch in youtube awsome
If you haven't gotten the book after an entire year, then I'd recommend asking for a refund.
Jordan3D I don't think he'd even get the refund.
Chaos89P If I dropped 80$ on a book, then I'd sure as hell make sure that I got my money back if it didn't come withing a year (honestly about two and a half months would be my cap)
Jordan3D I'd say that the ***** take legal action, but I'm kinda doubtful anything good'll come to fruition.
Chaos89P Yeah, but that's a lot of money just to have it stolen from you.
+Jordan3D I remember ordering a $30 Whimsicott plush from a guy in China. Delivery was supposed to take no more than two weeks. When it didn't show up, I came to grips with the fact that it wan't coming. I got a refund from the seller--neither of us knew what happened to the product.

I hope the Historian dose an episode about the toys Nintendo made before they made videogames.
agreed!!!
BMO that's a video I'd love to see
BMO in "Nintendo's 125th birthday" he talks a little about the Japanese card game that Nintendo made in the past
BMO If he does that, i think he should do an entire series on Nintendo as a whole.
+BMO "History of Nintendo Volume #1" is almost entirely devoted to non-video game Nintendo products.

Everything is digital now, nobody cares about that stuff

I don't think millenials care much about anything any longer except being superficial. They're one of the most vapid generations to have ever existed.
@@eustacequinlank7418 Rather late millenials (late 90s - 2004) and Gen Zs.
Has anyone reached out to them to see if a digital version is ever coming out? I'm not much for collecting physical books but I'd love to buy it for Kindle.
Gunpei was such a visionary. From seeing a guy playing on a calculator he created handheld gaming. Thank you Gunpei.
If it wasn't for the fact that 1) I live in NYC and was able to go to the Nintendo Store and see one of the "Game and Watch" hardware and 2) there are videos about the "Game and Watch" from Nintendo, I would've sworn that the Game Boy was their first handheld hardware back when I was a teenager. this was very informative, and I enjoy your content!

Dang, that's a mighty beautiful book! I wish they sold it on Amazon.
Could you do a gaming historian on the Atari 7800?
Now it needs an updated version.
I adore the Game and Watch series. I've been able to collect a handful of them over the last few years. This book is a must have. Already ordered. Thanks for bringing this to my attention!
The production value in these latest videos is astounding.
Will you make a History Of Mario Kart Video
YES PLEASE
I can't hit the like button enough. I'm a Game & Watch fan. I loved this. Could we see The Gaming Historian do a video on the Game & Watch series?
Nice! I have that green Donkey Kong, Jr. Game & Watch on my bookshelf; it's two years older than I am. I also vaguely recall having a Super Mario Brothers one ages ago. It flipped open, and the goal was to make sure oil drums (or bricks?) went into the right place on a conveyor belt...reminiscent of "Root Beer Tapper" with a factory setting.

it boggles the mind that you dont have WAY more subscribers

Game and watch gallery: hold my beer

Did you get your Volume 2 book in the end?
I recently got 4 Game & Watch games as the DSIware rereleases. Those were: Ball, Judge, Vermin and Mario's Cement Factory.
I remember having one Game & Watch as a kid - Mario's Cement Factory. It would be an interesting collection to go for. Great video!
I still got my game & watch games called green house and octopus ever since I was a kid. Always loved those classics.
Great video. Are you ever going to do a video on the history of the GameCube or Ds??
2:34 In 90s in Russia many children believed that if you collect a lot of points in this game, a color cartoon will be shown on the display.
As a kid I had Green House & Donkey Kong JR.
Wow I can't really start collecting game and watches but I'd love that book, looks really interesting.
Thank you!
I have Donkey Kong (1982). The D-pad is seriously good, just responds so fluently.
I have the widescreen Super Mario Bro's Game and Watch. Got it new as my first video game, ever. Somehow it survived my childhood, and it is still in 100% working condition, though it shows years of use, of course.
I look forward your next episode and Gaming Historian keep up the good work!
I love your content, I can feel the passion in your videos, like its more than just a tedious hobby to you. thanks for making great videos man!
I knew the G&W where really popular back in the day but i never realised how popular. Do you have a list of interesting books about video game history? I'd love a reading list of some sort.
Damn, this reminded me of how the Donkey Kong Jr Table Top was my most wanted for a good couple of years but I never saw it anywhere. The pain has come flooding back, I still want one!
Hey Norm! Just wondering when your next video will be up?
Cool book. I have the G&W where they load the boxes into the truck. Had it since a child and it's still super mint. I don't think this one is rare though. Nice to own though.
what is that shirt you are wearing? it looks like a stylized healer from the old final fantasy games but im not sure.
What does the NIntendo's Diskun mascot have to do with Game and Watch?
This looks good although there doesn't seem much textual information about the games on each 2-page spread beyond statistics
There was also a cool Donkey Kong one that had 2 control pads one wires that detached from the unit that a friend of mine had.
Just curious but have you gotten the 35th anniversary Super Mario G&W yet?
I love the book, yet the descriptions are sometimes quite shallow to my taste. For example, I am lacking information, such as how to turn off the sound (every unit had its unique way) and if it was possible in the first place (only later units allowed muting sound).
I played a game and watch before and would wish to get my own someday. Its so amazing. I wounder if this show will talk about the Tiger games.
Norm: you do such a great job, keep up the good work man!

have to say your videos are very good. keep up the great work.
Nice to see your hair looking good again. I wasnt sold on that undercut! Anyway, nice review ;)
Wonder if the book came?
Still waiting on that next stream =) no rush just joking, but in all seriousness I really enjoyed your Wiley Wars stream and would like to see what else you pull out of left field! As always great work man.

Game&Watch handhelds were my alarm clocks during my school years
im going to germany in a couple months. i wonder if i can find a cheap way of getting it while im tere
These episodes on books are the best! 10/10
What song did you use for the BG music?
Thanks for this great video Game and watch were amazing i remember playing em as a Kid.
Did this guy hang it up? I haven't seen anything in a while. Love this guys work.
Sorry to hear that you never received "History of Nintendo Volume #2." I managed to find a copy, in the wild - at a comic/video game store, earlier this year, at cover price. I am more excited for Volume #3, if it is ever released, as it will cover the GameBoy.

But I live in Europe so how much would it cost me?
Great review! 👍
I'm an avid Nintendo G&W collector as well and have them all boxed. As well as, many Nintendo G&W flyers & merchandise. However, I'm still missing "Headache" (British version of Helmet).
My collection lacks also NOA Pocket Size series (which I'm giving serious thoughts to collect them!)
Having that said, there are distributors' names which were imposed on the G&W consoles (such as, CGL, MEGO, J.i 21... etc). But, I'm not sure if I'm going to hunt them!
I got the History of Nintendo volume 2 from the publisher. It came pretty quickly too.
I got a copy of The History of Nintendo Vol 2 by finding one at a game store out of pure luck. I too bought one from the publisher, and still haven't received from them, even after repeated emails complaining about it.

Oh wow thanks for sharing this, that book looks super sweet. Shame about Pix N Love Publishing though... it took me a whole year to get History of Nintendo Vol.1 from them... I have no idea where my order is for Vol.2... Hopefully it shows up soon for you.
Nice video, I really like stuff like this.
I remember finding one of these in the early 90s at my aunts house an having no clue what it was for decades literally. Thanks to the Internet an RUclips in particular now I for one have a much more vast knowledge of intersteing and sometimes rare gaming artifacts.
Have many game and watches do you have now?
