How To Make A 5 Gallon Bucket Air Conditioner Without Glue Or Tape - Homemade Air Conditioner

- My wife and I made a 5 gallon bucket homemade air conditioner without glue or tape. We thought it was important to be able to remove the PVC pipes so we could store it without PVC pipes sticking out and so we could clean and or dry between the insert and bucket when finished to prevent mold and bad smell when running. Also, it would be nice to be able to replace the insert should it crack. We figured out the trim measurements just right so everything fits nice and tight. We used a plastic trim to do this. We also used the trim to better seal the fan to the bucket lid. It helps with vibration noise as well. Thank you for watching my how to make a 5 gallon bucket air conditioner AC!

I am not an electrician and just make suggestions based on personal experiences. If you are not an electrician, I suggest speaking to one regarding anything to do with electricity and your system. For example, I have no idea if running the fan on its side can cause motor to overheat and cause problems...

Well done! Was going to do this a couple years ago... Yours is precisely how I'll make ours.
Thanks!
Great instruction, a joy to watch. This is a fantastic idea.
Great I love these. They come in handy during the summer time. Gotta make one.
This is FANTASTIC 👍 - Many Thanks!! 💜👏💛
Loved your video. I’ll be making it real soon. Thanks again.
Awesome! I'm going to try this. Thanks! 👍👍
Good call on the trim! I'm making one this week using this video 👍
Thanks. Let me know how it went!
Love this idea going to make 3 of them. Had to order the liners online, like you did, since it brings 3 I will use them all. too hot in Florida....thank you
Very nice! Thanks for sharing.
Looks amazing
Your wife did a GREAT JOB !
She loves doing this kind of thing!
Just found your channel and I’ve watched probably ten videos already. This is genius
Thank you.
Very educative. I love things like this
It was fun to make...

Educative? How are those GED pretests going?
@@mrfrankcastle083 shut the fuck up you basement troll
very cool (pun intended). thanks for sharing.
Awesome! New subscriber. I actually have 2 of those fans already. I had made one a while back with junk computer fans, however was not enough airflow. Thanks for the video. 👍😁
Thanks for watching.
Awesome that you're showing the internet this information..very useful....although when shit hits the fan everybody in you neighborhood is going to know you have an ice cooled a-c unit when people are hot😉 opsec is real, they might wanna know what else you have. Regardless, you're a true community man helping out the people. ✌♥️🤘 glad I found your page. Subbed, great stuff
great video! thank you for explanation. Could you please put the items and where did you get them from, in the description?
Also, if we dont have cutting tools, is there any place to get them precisely cut for us?
Amazing! I'l bet that with the styrofoam in there that thing will run a while! Thanx for all the details!
Cool! . If you run the hole saw in reverse it cuts plastic more cleanly. Try it! Also, I wonder if you pull the PVC out further if you'd get less turbulence inside the bucket and more velocity out the, well, outlets. If you use heavier paper strips on the outlets/vents you may be able to detect a velocity change.
And I love the way you start your vids - just get in there -- no need for music and graphics that add no value.
Loving your channel!!
That is another reason we wanted to make the pipes removable. We figured people would slide then in or out to get the best air flow but that would depend on how much ice they use and how much room it takes, I suppose. There are lots of videos that show the 5 gallon bucket ac, but we thought ours was just different enough that it would be useful to post.
OMG 😲 Fabulous
it's a swamp cooler 'sos ac' that adds humidity to room so not good longterm. have seen dozens of ice chest versions, but this eliminates elbows, glue, etc.
You have a very nice design and it does work but only to a point due to the properties of thermodynamics. Some people pointed this out for this and similar designs; that it really didn't do much and in fact acts more like just a fan. But here's how to fix the thermodynamic problems. (#1) Reduce the fan speed or even get a smaller fan. Pushing air through too fast doesn't give it enough time to cool down (#2) This is important. Take a 4" piece of PVC pipe to use as an inner liner, drill eight 1/2" holes near the bottom of the pipe. Underneath your lid affix a tube (a 1 qt. Chinese soup container is perfect - just cut the bottom off) that will connect your fan output and funnel the air into the PVC pipe - when you put the lid on they mesh together. You'll have to figure the length of the PVC pipe. Now you have an inner pipe that pushes the air under the crushed ice or ice cubes which you have distributed inside and outside the PVC pipe to a depth of say 8 or 10 inches. The air must come up through the ice to get to your output pipes, and will cool down much more. (#3) Use your bigger fan on the floor to just push the air around faster.
Thanks - Mine didn’t do much - 78 deg air going in, 72 coming out. Worthless.
@@johnwfleming2077 For pushing air over Ice 78 to 72 is pretty damn good
Umm.. 6 degrees. I'm sure his method would be almost 15° cooler. Idk
@@kevincappella2980 You're right. It's just the tradeoff of moving air faster which feels nice, but slowing the fan speed cools it more and over time is better overall since the air is cooler. You can always blow another fan in the room just to move air.
7:49 What if I made mine with left-hand threads since that's the only 2in tap I had?
I didn't know americans experience brown outs too, we experience this in my country way too often and I've been researching on this alternative
Omg I really need to do this😭😭
Nice video! This will definitely help me save money...I have a question though. What size room does this AC system cover? I'm in a roughly 200 square foot dorm.
Luca Melendez
Not sure, but it should cover 200 sf.
nice swamp cooler now ya mentioned running off a solar panel in power outage what about at night a 12 v fan that could run off a car battery that could be charged by said solar during day and run fan to now that would be off grid useful
Yep... that's an option for sure. I have almost 10,000 watt hours available with my solar system so it has no problems running this at night since it draws less than 35 watts.
Nice! Have any way to test the temp from the cooler's exhaust? Curious about this vs an evaportive water cooler.
Yes, but I have it put away at the moment... sorry.
Great idea. Can you provide info on the fan; where you bought it, brand name etc. Thanks.

Buy the 9” fan and you don’t need a lid to the bucket.
Very nicely done. Not sure in Canada where to get the bucket insert. I didn't see it on our Home depot. But I am sure I could find one somewhere
Thanks for the reply. I will check those shops out.
Did you ever find one?
Hi. No I never did find one yet. I will have to look again, and try this next year.
I know its a bit late. But What I did was buy a square bucket and some cheap thin foam and tape it to the sides with some duct tape
Just go online and search Leaktite 5-gal. Bucket Companion Cooler. There are numerous options in 2018, at least in the US!
i would just use an old cooler ice would last way longer
You said that you use this when the power goes out. How do you power the fan when the power is out? Do you use a battery, solar or both?
Use solar
Don't know why YT has removed published dates of the videos. Do you still use your bucket AC? Looks like a great idea.
I was for years, but because of food shortages, we use freezer for foods rather than ice and use small portable ac that I run with my solar generator when needed. But costs $$$
@@LoneStarPrepping Thank you for responding. I may still try it.
@@YEARNINGHEARTGuitargirl226 We still have ours and plan to use it when shortage improves and if solar runs out because of lack of sun etc...
@@LoneStarPrepping Great. I was just explaining it to my family.
@@LoneStarPrepping did u ever run into any problems with the fan continuously blowing on ice/water?
i can't find those styrofoam inserts anywhere. says they are out of stock at home depot
Amazon has them. Just be sure it is made of Styrofoam and not plastic...
I got mine at the fishing isle at walmart.
will the ac still be effective without the styrofoam insert? or will the ice just melt faster without it?
I think the ice will just melt faster. Thus with it, it will cool better and longer.
Where does the solar panel come in? For power outages I assume. Otherwise the fan can just be hooked up to an electrical outlet right?
You can just plug the fan into an electrical outlet. The panel is for power outages.
I live in a relatively higher humid area in South Central Texas - should I expect this to still work in a geographical area like that ?
Yes
question about your gallon of water jug. I heard that if it is filled all the way top. that it will over expand water comes out or cracked open is that true.
yes that is true. Don't fill all the way and leave the cap loose until frozen.
+PreppingOver50 cool thanks
@@LoneStarPrepping add that tip to description or next vid
can it cool a small/average bedroom? if so, can you share your experience as example? or tell us how many degrees can it cool an 11x11ft space in 30min?
Seems to cool more than just a fan... humidity more than welcome because the air is very dry.
@@LoneStarPrepping roughly how many degrees can it cool an 11x11ft space in 30min? 5F+?
Can you put dry ice in this?
I have no idea
Where did you get the fan?
I think I got it on Amazon... but cant remember.
That electric jigsaw is older than my grandpa.
Garage sale buy
I have a homemade ac I made it uses a water resivor you add ice to it water is pumped to a real evaporator fan blows air across it wammo cooler air it wasn't very costly I need to do a video on it
Why don't u? Idiot
I agree. all talk. anyone can claim they made the best AC unit. why dont you stop coming on peoples videos trying to sound so smart
Take my money and sell me one kit please!
add rock salt for an ice cream maker drops the temp cooler cheap
If you have no electricity, how will this work?
I had a 10,000 watt solar generator. It would not run my hvac, so this came in handy.
I can't find styrofoam liners
Google earch "5 gallon bucket insulated liner"
can you make another one and sell it to me
It would be EXTREMELY helpful to put the name/description of each part in the description.
Robert Henry its a 5 gallon bucket with some holes and a fan on top...
jig saw not hack saw the other is a miter or back saw
I had already corrected the jigsaw by adding text in video before I uploaded it.
why bother with the foam insert? just seems like it would make cleaning it a pain.
It keeps the ice cold for longer
Melty
insulation to slow the ice melt
Man, what is WITH this edge trim? This shit is hot garbage trying to bend, and it keeps trying to clamp shut ahead of where I've already secured it.
Can't use an electric fan if the power is off.
If you listen to video, within 25 seconds, you would hear me ssy that we had a solar generator. Yes... I can run fan with power off.
@@LoneStarPrepping I did hear that. Most people don't have a solar generator.
@@raycin313 some people want setup like this to suppliment their AC... for US its about power outages.
You can also use battrty powered fan....
Also, some people have power but no AC
