- Stay cool on a hot day with your very own DIY 5-gallon bucket "air conditioner". With a bucket, a foam liner, a fan, and some PVC fittings you can build a homemade "ice powered" air cooler.
This "deluxe" version incorporates a variable-speed fan and adjustable vent tubes for directional airflow.

PVC Fittings:
2-in x 2-in cleanout adapters (smooth male to threaded female)
2-in adapter fittings (threaded male to smooth female)

You can drop your output air temp by 10-15° by adding a tube from the fan down INTO the ice.
Air flowing THROUGH the ice will be considerably colder than air flowing OVER it! 😉👍🥶

This was pretty good. Adding the fan meant for cooling gaming systems was great idea due to the fact that they run hot quickly, which works well.

@@SemperShock I'm gonna use the one he said in the video. Previously I just bought this cheap one from Walmart and it doesn't have enough airflow what so ever. I'll let ya know if it makes a big difference when I get it though! I have to wait til I get paid (starting a new job next week)

We are all in the same boat. Trying to get by. I live in the Bay Area. These homes don’t come with AC in them. It shouldn’t be that hot up here. But it was a 100 yesterday. I need to do something to combat this heat.

The only other thing better than ice is using a frozen gallon of ice, that way it can be re-used. 1 in the bucket 1 in the freezer.
Good idea! I'd only worry about the ice expanding and splitting the gallon jug. But I wonder about getting a bunch of those cheap blue "gel" freezer packs and using that gel to fill a milk jug. I don't think that gel stuff expands very much when freezing.

Well, my cool blue Great Lakes friend... down here in Texas we like to redneck it up a bit. I used a Harbor Freight bucket - bright red!! Yee-freakin'-Haw!! Going to use it at a camp tent cooler for a small 2 man tent. I have a Jackery 240 to power it. Thanks for the design and vid!!
Wonderfully detailed instruction. Very clear and easy to understand. Something like this would be great to have, especially if the grid was to go down since one could use this with a generator or probably even one of those solar chargers. As always, enjoyed seeing Lena!

Recently had to move by home office to my basement. I've tried like 5 different types and combinations of windowless ACs and fan and the room still hovers around 78-80°F all day while im working. I think this may be the solution. Thank you!

I was thinking about one of these and then it popped up on my RUclips feed. I was thinking precisely similar to this with the exception of a pipe going down the middle but not extending all the way to the bottom of the bucket that would force the air to rise up through the ice and increase the chill factor. You could have multiple holes drilled in the bottom of the central pipe or just have it pushing straight through.
That's a good idea for an improvement to this style of air cooler.
Nice design! The main issue I see is where to get the ice when the power goes out longer term.

Put your eyes in there take about three or four nice big chunks of dry ice food with it put with it when your ice melts the dry ice to keep longer plus turns into a nice fogging machine just a suggestion that's what I put in mind and it works a whole lot longer with dry ice
where do you get the insulating insert?
A cooler option with those lids is Captain and used a car air filter as your inlet and put the fan on the bottom lid and have it spaced out like that this way it's sleek easily cleaned and different

It would be more expensive but I wonder what using a yeti bucket would do as far as keeping ice longer.
I haven't tried this one but, some say putting salt on the ice makes it cooler and last longer.
I wonder if you could figure out a way to insert small fans on the end of each pvc to help spread the air that is coming from them.
Have you tried this design using refreezable blue blocks instead of ice?
How many amps does the fan use ? I need a ac unit this which seems slick by the way. Or anything that uses no more than 5 amps
I just built this for camping and it’s looking really good, thank you!! My question is how can I run it from a battery? You mentioned 110 volt, do you have an adapter that you hook up to a battery? Or does you battery already have a 110 outlet?
This particular motor runs on 110v. If I was building it primarily for 12v, I would have used a different motor. However, my truck does have a 110v outlet I could use for it, or I could use a basic inverter with my 12v solar backup system in the house. But if you only ever want to power it with a battery, I would use a 12v motor instead of this one. It would be more economical than using 110v and buying an inverter.

I might have to try this, I am an artist that vends at outdoor events. One event in particular is nine 12+ hour long days in a row, at a time of year that is usually hot in the afternoons. I have a van with a cot in it so my hubby and I can switch off taking naps when needed. BUT it's like napping in an oven, and the van air conditioner can't keep up. I have been looking for ways to help cool it down. This might be the answer. I only need to use 2 or 3 times a year.
May put a couple frozen 2 liter bottles and see if there is a change more air will circulate.

I have been wanting to make one of these for a while. So in a standard sized room, does it keep the room cool, or do you have to sit right by it to feel its affects?

One video the guy used a gallon water bottle that he froze before putting it in. I will try that first because I'm afraid once the ice starts melting the air coming out will have water mixed with the air. I did get the same fan you did, and couldn't get the insulator you got because they won't ship to California because styrofoam is outlawed here. Lol. I got the fan seal and speed adjuster too. Btw. Seems like you can't get a perfect seal on the lid because it has that raised circle. I also got the food safe bucket that is white, and doesn't have the big Lowe's or Home Depot on it.

Buckets from a bakery are usually a lot more sturdy and they will usually donate.
I have been looking at these & wondered why no one used a 120MM fan instead as I use 120mm Delta Fans on everything lol mainly my computers which are 240 CFM fans that run at a max of 60W each & get the job done never needing full speed even when I game. They would be great for something like this.
Hello, I think these are a great idea except that I’m learning that they could cause mold and mildew over time. I’m in Southern California and need to cool my music room.
I’m willing to install a wall air conditioner or portable AC if I need to, but curious if there’s something in between the ice chest and an AC that could work.
Hi Tom. I really see these as personal air coolers. I wouldn't count on it to cool a room; rather it will cool me if I'm near it. Being that they do not have the dehumidifying aspect to them like an A/C, they're not a real replacement. For a proper, long-term solution in a music room, I would definitely get a real A/C unit of some sort.

Those old swamp coolers used to be installed in the passenger window of the car with water inside. Then as you drove it forced the cool air through.

I saw a comment in a similar tutorial that the windows need to be open or else room or car will get rather humid.
I'm contemplating doing some car camping to save on a road trip. And honestly I'm just looking for something to keep cool at night while sleeping since I don't want to run the car AC due to obvious reasons. Seems like this would do the trick. Thoughts?
As long as you can keep it filled with ice, it will blow cool air on you! I think a batch of ice ought to last you through the night for sure.

How is the Air flow out of the pipe outlets?
It's pretty good, but isn't gonna blow your socks off. I found it to work a little bitter with one or two of the vents capped off, but when I'm hot I like the cold air to blast right at my head.
You mentioned using a 12 volt DC fan. I bought one and a 12 v 7ah battery. But the fan does not put much air out. I want to use the cooler in my golf cart.
Do you have any recommendations for a 1v DC fan with comparable specs to the 110 fan you used

Yea, the ice cubes will melt way faster without the insulating insert.

I did this. The ice was completely melted after an hour and 15 min. Did you not run your fan for the melt test?
What was the ambient temperature? Did you have the thick styrofoam bucket liner?

You can just leave the holes. The PVC fittings just help direct or adjust the airflow.

Does it actually cool down a room? Or is it just a cold blowing fan?
I have used it in a small tent and the ambient temp feels a bit cooler. But generally speaking, this is a "you" cooler. So yea, it's a fan that blows cold air (as opposed to a regular fan that blows hot room air).

Add cotton ball in a bowl of water last way longer
Okay you're hitting 60 to 60 to 63 degrees with regular ice if you took a block of dry ice and busted it up even two blocks you would drop your temperature down another 20 to 30° with dry ice and it would keep longer I know it works because I've already done it every time we do one of these swamp coolers cuz I was born and raised in the swamps we use dry ice because it lasts longer it pulls a colder air and if you want to make it really cool put some water with it a little bit of water just to make the dry ice start evaporating but your temperature be dropped down sufficiently even in 90° heat I live in Florida Orlando and it works very well which I ice a lot better than regular ice and use dry ice

It won't be very effective I think unless you're using ice (or something much cooler than the ambient air).
