Also there's an issue where the tickets for theater productions, especially the ones on Broadway (aka the ones that get nominated for Tonys), is so high, it prices a lot of people out.

There is no reason at all for a person to feel like they have to vocalize their doubt about who I am. What possible reason does a person have for saying that thought out loud. I am not mad at you I just think I should clarify. I hope this makes sense. I don't know if I explained it well.
If I come to your side about this, I think I am able to see your way of thinking. If we take all pretense out of the statement then we are left with the following. A person is telling you that they had a preconceived notion of what a member of your group represented and are now surprised to find out that the definition is more complex and thereby their internal definition is now more complex. And they want to share their surprise with you. If you take it this way, than it is a way of relating to one another on a deeper level as part of the global community. "Oh wow, there is more nuance in people than I previously thought. Isn't that wonderful." You have made me think about this on an even deeper level than I had previously thought whether that was your intention or not. Thank you.
LordOfDays I'm a white african, and I get similar comments all the time, "you don't look african", or "but you're white". It's not a racist thing to me. Racism is the belief that a particular race is superior. I don't think that's in play when people make those comments.
