No one finds Fallon funny lmao, he's an impressionist at heart/ a sort of jack of all trades (but master of none), and is just fun to be around: he's a people person and its his energy and personality that's got him this far which is okay I think. I don't really get the constant comparison.
I’m not a huge fan of Fallon, but I was surprised by his deodorant name of “Gym” as a callback to the boss named Jim. That was quick and clever enough I almost missed it.
He's not funny, but he laughs, and you can see he genuinely enjoys having a conversation with his gests, so he lifts up the mood, and makes our funny Johnny guy even more funny.
During this show you could clearly see John calling Jimmy out on the fake compliments and quickly forcing him to bring out his real laughter. Gotta love guests this witty! 😂
That didn't happen lmao John just doesn't like compliments and is the type of person where compliments make them uncomfortable so they joke and brush them off. Jimmy clearly admires John but I guess he's incapable of admiring people because you all hate his laugh and his unfunniness? Go off I guess...
That's the way I interpreted it too actually it was like he was pulling him out of the acting into the actual conversation maybe. But I could see other people's points of view also because after all who cares
John is one of those people who is not aesthetically pleasant but makes it up with comedy, intelligence and a voice like a glass of chocolate milk. Feel free to quote me on this John.
In case anyone wonders about his 1st Cav Pin(US Army Pin) While dodging security at the 2008 RNC, Oliver met his future wife. She was part of a non-partisan combat veteran's group and he was a cub reporter for the Daily Show. Kate and her people helped John and his people hide from the RNC heavies. Later, at the 2008 DNC, Norley and her Vets for Freedom ran into Oliver and crew again and soon after the two began dating. In time, Oliver's diligence earned him both a green card and a wife. TL;DR: His wife, Kate Norley, was a combat medic with 1st Cav.
"You need to be funnier around here before you go and be funny somewhere else." That's some solid reasoning that will probably change my life, "You need to be more X around here before you go and be X somewhere else."
"It's a boy, Mr. Oliver... Yes.. yes congratulations.. but.. ok.. look. Please sit down. There's no easy way to say this.. he's... Well He's American. I know.. I know it's a blow.. it is. But it isn't the handicap it used to be. He might grow up to be.. A successful furniture salesman.. maybe a branch manager for a mid level travel agency.. A schizophrenic RUclipsr, maybe... I wish that when Jimmy asked what was your job before comedy he said " I worked at Buckingham palace in the kitchen and I once gave the queen feta cheese"
Me here for John Oliver too, he is intelligent, knowledgeable, and funny at the same time....also not insecure or self conscious.....lethal combination
No one is objectively funny as humor is by nature subjective, but I find him so. As hard as comedy is, everyone who makes it in that industry has some kind of talent, though there are objective standards for grading the quality of comedy, in terms of joke construction, set up and delivery, as well as originality. Some people are very skilled at playing to the lowest common denominator or exploiting a gimmick to it's full potential. I'm sure Oliver wouldn't consider himself highbrow as he's undeniably a fan of silly hijinks, but he's obviously most appealing to smarter audiences.
I love you John! You are not afraid to make yourself the butt of your jokes. Thank you for making the news lighthearted and serious at the same time. Don’t know how you do it but keep it up!!!
He's not wrong, we can be pretty miserable over in the UK haha. If you want to feel depressed sit on the tube on the london underground at 7am, the amount of misery is incredible. If it wasn't for tea and scones we wouldn't get through our days
I'm not surprised that the character Eeyore is British. I can see how tea and scones help. As an American tea drinker, I love visiting England because of all the properly made tea.
All the Winnie characters are British, but the US-made cartoon changes most of the voices, but not the donkey. As a Brit can I just say 'thanx for representing us a Eeyore'. OK, we can be a bit miserable at times!

I love how his accent slips into more of a lower-class Londoner when he's quoting Jim, and then it bleeds into the rest of his speech... he usually sounds so posh, it's a delightful contrast xD
Aside from John’s usual RP accent, he can also do a pretty good London accent. I also hear that he does a mean Midlands accent (which would make sense with him being from Birmingham)
I think, like Colbert, he changed his accent when he started to do comedy as he felt people would take him more seriously. When he does an impression of himself as a child he sounds way more brummie

Britain should be extremely proud for John Oliver. I still watch his Net Neutrality videos whenever I lose faith in journalism.
They don't really work that way. They find American pride in things like an actor being from their hometown weird. They're much more likely to slag them off.
Agreed. His Net Neutrality videos were sobering and they are true journalism.
Nobody in Britain has any idea who he is. It's one of the reasons he left.
No matter how many times we call it that, his show is still not journalism.
