I immigrated with my family from Ireland when I was 3 years old in 1989 so I went through the entire American schooling system. I still had to take the English test as well as the citizenship test despite having earned a 5 on the AP United States History exam as well as both AP English exams and graduated with two Master's degrees from an American university. My older brother is a high school history teacher in America who used to give the citizenship test *in his classes* and he still had to take the citizenship test. To be honest, the worst part of my citizenship interview was, because I've grown up in America, I've absorbed the cynical attitude Americans have about the country. My interview was right before the 2016 election so I asked if I would eligible to vote in time. I was not so, forgetting where I was, I quipped, "Oh, I guess I'll vote in the next one if Trump will let me!" I immediately realized that I f*cked up so I started laughing nervously and insisting, "Just kidding!" to the stone-faced interviewer and her trainee. I had my naturalization ceremony only a few days after Trump won - I almost didn't go but I went and got naturalized. Now I vote in every. single. election.
I’ve had so many coworkers lose their H1B visas in the lottery system and get moved overseas. It’s gut wrenching. I wish the whole system would be reviewed and updated because it’s bonkers.

seeing Ronnie beaming like that, when John said "he's gonna be fine", was so endearing, I could say that it was the ultimate compliment at that moment for him, and has kind of ruined my enjoyment of him being a complete AH comedian 😂 ❤
Great and hilarious interview! It’s true that it’s very difficult to come here. It takes luck and money - people don’t realize that. We tried 3 times ti save up money to board a dinky boat and were attacked by pirates 7-8 times before we landed in Thailand and had ti stay in refugee camps Neogen coming here. And we were able to come here bc we were considered political refugees and our country was at war; whereas my uncle had to stay at the refugee camp for 5 years bc he came a few years later and were considered economic refugees and therefore his escape was not as dire. 😢
Going off the rails is half the fun in comedy interview segments. But yeah, John Oliver is a class act. A British dry humored, self deprecating class act. And I'm here for it.
I feel like this is less of an interview of Ronnie to John than it is both of these gentlemen interviewing each other and I am totally here for it. Especially when Ronnie turns the tables on John "check out this boomah!!!" 😅 🤣
These two should definitely work together more often! Maybe John can fit him in as a guest on his show sometimes! It was so fun to see how excited Ronnie was to have John on and to ask him questions ! You can feel the mutual respect they both have for each other, their craft, and their new home country! Well done!!
My husband was able to come here on a fiancée visa and we got married and he got a green card, but it was such a stressful process. We had to provide so much proof of our 3 year relationship, all our texts, videos, photos, ticket stubs, restaurant receipts, proof that we had met each other’s families, etc. And still, with all that, having a green card means he could have been thrown out of the country at any time. Not to mention, it probably cost us $3,000, with him flying to the only place in his country that was able to do the visa testing and the medical exam, the visa application fee, all the subsequent testing fees (like translation and filing fees) and the filing service we ended up using.
At the end John Oliver looked so awkward because he's not used to actually standing up from a desk and worrying about camera blocking that Ronnie had to swing him to the right direction like a dutiful son guiding his grandpa 😂
thank you for talking about the visa process..... im literally 10 years into the process of being on different visas and its still at least 2 to 3 years away..... the worst part of the experience is american people or people who started with green cards being completely oblivious and inconsiderate about how difficult the process is and how little flexibility you have to do anything during this time 😭😭
Most Americans don't understand the struggle 😢 I have American friends and coworkers ask me about my status because I'm not a Citizen or a resident and they are so confused as to how I've been in this country for 30+yrs and cannot become a citizen. It just doesn't work that way.
Wonderful segment! I feel like Iʻve seen a side of Ronnie and John I havenʻt seen before -- thanks! It took me several minutes to realize that when they were talking about "philpees," they meant "field piece," as in an out in the field segment. 😛
The more i watch this, the more intellectual this feels. John is really really listening to the questions. I think in other interviews he has done, he usually already knows what he’s going to say next…?
These are genuinely two of my favorite comedians and they never fail to make me laugh. Lovely to see them working together and sharing their experience!
I’m legitimately impressed Jon Oliver of all people actually did get a tight spiral. I’ve been trying to throw a football for years, and unless you’ve got an official weighted, and sized, etc, throwing something smaller, or lighter, or shorter, or if the ridges are wrong, all that can effect your throwing pattern. I’m sure that was an official, but even with practice, I’m impressed
10:54 it took my mother three times to take the test on becoming a United States citizen. She had to learn the constitution and history of America in one year. Where I had twelve years of school. She finally got her citizenship in Denver, Colorado. I see it all the time that when people come to the United States and get their citizenship they seem to be more appreciative of being Americans than the ones born here.

WOW-O-WOW-O-WOW!!! This was a such a wonderful, humorous interview!! Glad you both are here in the USA providing so much genuine entertainment to us all!!
Best segment this year.
I love Ronny Chieng and 'Mr. Oliver', I hope Ronny keeps getting bigger.
LOVED this!! I love Ronnie Chieng and this makes me respect John Oliver more
Ronny isn’t my first choice…… but I really can’t complain about anything if he gets the job. He’s insanely funny.
he may not be the worst possible choice...but he's close. Not even 10% as funny as Roy Wood Jr., Dulce Sloan, Hasan Minhaj, or 1% as funny as Leslie Jones.
I love these two guys individually but together with just one day to host they are GOLD! Thank you!
So nice to see a father and son bond with thanksgiving traditions
Loved the length to let the conversation flow, also great synergy between host and guest.
seeing Ronnie beaming like that, when John said "he's gonna be fine", was so endearing, I could say that it was the ultimate compliment at that moment for him, and has kind of ruined my enjoyment of him being a complete AH comedian 😂 ❤
What a wonderfully touching AND funny interview with two of my favorite comedians.
what you think guys should we just let Ronny do the show full time already
Great and hilarious interview! It’s true that it’s very difficult to come here. It takes luck and money - people don’t realize that. We tried 3 times ti save up money to board a dinky boat and were attacked by pirates 7-8 times before we landed in Thailand and had ti stay in refugee camps Neogen coming here. And we were able to come here bc we were considered political refugees and our country was at war; whereas my uncle had to stay at the refugee camp for 5 years bc he came a few years later and were considered economic refugees and therefore his escape was not as dire. 😢
Glad you made it 🥰 Have a wonderful holiday 🎉
I have utmost respect for the difficult journey you guys have made. I hope you’ve been able to make the life you wanted here 🥺❤️
These two are incredible on their own and somehow even better together. I love both of these dudes
John was SUCH A PRO when he saved Ronnie from that "how was it back in the day" bit that went totally off the rails
Going off the rails is half the fun in comedy interview segments. But yeah, John Oliver is a class act. A British dry humored, self deprecating class act. And I'm here for it.
Ronny is amazing no questions on a card just straight conversations
I feel like this is less of an interview of Ronnie to John than it is both of these gentlemen interviewing each other and I am totally here for it. Especially when Ronnie turns the tables on John "check out this boomah!!!" 😅 🤣
I love both of them so much! So happy to see them together
These two should definitely work together more often! Maybe John can fit him in as a guest on his show sometimes! It was so fun to see how excited Ronnie was to have John on and to ask him questions ! You can feel the mutual respect they both have for each other, their craft, and their new home country! Well done!!
Two great professional satirists. You really have to be very insightful, intelligent and knowledgeable. Love Ronnie and John. ❤️
What a brilliant segment. Thank you for allotting a decent amount of time for it ❤️
Decent? I want hours and hours!! 🤣😂👍😎
For a guy that refuses to call it a "football", that was actually a solid throw😆
Well he’s been here six years 🎉
My husband was able to come here on a fiancée visa and we got married and he got a green card, but it was such a stressful process.
I’m going to need for you guys at the Daily Show to give Ronny a full week hosting ASAP… thanks 🙌🏾
This was a terrific conversation.
I wasn't familiar with Ronny Chieng before this, but he's great! I'll keep an eye out for him.
I got told to go back where I came from all the time growing up. I just say I’ll go back to Kansas
These guys are comedy experts. It is really fun to hear them analyze their craft.
Put Ronny on the desk permanently and I'll start watching this show again.
I will too.
And you are...?
I haven’t watched the daily show in like six months but I clicked on this
I watch, regardless who is guest hosting
Where I loved the hilarity of the Hasan/Ronny clip, this clip just made me smile like an idiot. Thank you awful people, for making me feel emotions.
At the end John Oliver looked so awkward because he's not used to actually standing up from a desk and worrying about camera blocking that Ronnie had to swing him to the right direction like a dutiful son guiding his grandpa 😂
This was great. I want more of these two.
Best Late Night interview I’ve ever seen. 👍
Great segment! Thanks for showing the entire thing. It was funny and very poignant. Great content, very moving. 💜
This is a very different kind of conversation from these two. Very refreshing!
This is a real conversation. It’s not angry Ronny working through bits (until the end).
thank you for talking about the visa process..... im literally 10 years into the process of being on different visas and its still at least 2 to 3 years away..... the worst part of the experience is american people or people who started with green cards being completely oblivious and inconsiderate about how difficult the process is and how little flexibility you have to do anything during this time 😭😭
Most Americans don't understand the struggle 😢 I have American friends and coworkers ask me about my status because I'm not a Citizen or a resident and they are so confused as to how I've been in this country for 30+yrs and cannot become a citizen. It just doesn't work that way.
Wonderful segment! I feel like Iʻve seen a side of Ronnie and John I havenʻt seen before -- thanks!
It took me several minutes to realize that when they were talking about "philpees," they meant "field piece," as in an out in the field segment. 😛
So glad I saw this....I have you both in my heart as Americans, never thought you both were immigrants. #thanksforcominghereweloveyou
Great Segment. I didn't know Ronny started while Mr. Oliver was still with the show 😁. Ronny is great doing interviews and needs a talk show.
This interview makes me smile so much. It's so endearing to see Ronnie interact with Mr Oliver.
so weird to see ronny acting not so in control in front of somebody, he must've really put john oliver on a pedestal
My 2 favorite correspondents! Literally brought a tear to my eye.
The more i watch this, the more intellectual this feels. John is really really listening to the questions. I think in other interviews he has done, he usually already knows what he’s going to say next…?
Anytime the old crew gets together it just feels so natural ❤ They just have their own kind of magic
I love you both! So glad you are part of this great nation!
I have never seen any videos of John Oliver not joking other than some small excerpts on this interview. Truly Fascinating.
The immigration process ….only an immigrant can relate. Well done Ronnie & John.
These are genuinely two of my favorite comedians and they never fail to make me laugh. Lovely to see them working together and sharing their experience!
12:40 Leave it to Ronnie to sneak a Hamilton Quote into a leasurely conversation 😂
Make Ronnie the permanent host! 🙏🥺
