Prism Finder or Waist Level Finder? I'm going to say BOTH as each has their own benefits. The best optical experience is the PM5 in my opinion, but the fact the waist level collapses into such a small little package makes it the perfect choice for a family beach session at sunset.
The Prism Viewfinder because it LOOKS SICK!!!
For the waist level finder there is a circular and square hole version which you show in this video, do you think there would be a difference? Most I see on ebay have the circle hole.
I vaguely remember Werner Herzog advocating holding the camera up to your eye and having it become part of your body, and this seems like the perfect setup to do that

It is extremely common for Hassy finders to be a bit loose and rattle when you move them. Some of them have little raised flanges or cutouts for springs that you can bend a bit with a bread knife or needle-nose pliers in order to return it to a tight, fresh-from-the-factory fit.
That's good to know! The PM5 is locked on secure and doesn't rattle, I don't even mind it, when my eye is on it and i move the camera you don't hear it at all. Just when it's kind of free form in the hand.

It’s a fantastic setup for low profile especially. No SDi cables, no extra batteries. I’ve always loved those viewfinders so being able to use them in a new way is just 🔥

4:53 I would argue that a bit of separation or dust inside the prism finder really isn't all that troublesome, especially if you want to save a bit of money (rare as that may be in those using a RED camera :P ).
The imperfections in the viewfinder won't end up in the material you shoot after all.
That aside, I really do appreciate a manufacturer creating a small piece of equipment that allows you to make practical use of vintage gear. You don't need something new if there's old stock that's still perfectly serviceable.
The adapter itself is ridiculously expensive for what it is, but that goes with the target market.

It's amazing, honestly you can do just about anything with it. I would use this option for most stuff, but if i need a client monitor it's a bit trickier that way.
Hey Mark - thanks for the vid and I love this option - especially having recently picked up a couple film cameras. That being said, I'm not the tallest dude here and I often find myself on an apple box or chair when I need to hoist the sticks. Wondering if you've got any good suggestions for looking upward into an EVF while below the cam.
Hi John! I actually don't have a lot of good suggestions here. I'm 6'1 and sometimes I still need an apple box depending on how tall I've got the sticks and need good footing to control the camera. Usually for higher angle shots, but putting an arm on your camera with a monitor you can adjust is pretty helpful. I've got a wooden camera 8 inch arm that articulates that I use for handheld shots and I want to keep the monitor in the right placement in front of my face with a shoulder rig.
As I own two hasselblads and have 3 of these finders laying around, this is a no brainer!!

Does the image distorted in both viewfinders? Because I'm seeing some pincushion distortion in the waist one(
It looks better to the eye, if you see up directly against it. The camera lens doesn’t do a good job of resolving what the eye can see. I do like the PM5 better tho. The waist is great because it collapses for a very small profile

There's a record button on the side of the camera. I never use the touch screen even when not, I prefer a good solid button push over a touch...tactile ;)

Not sure the S1H really needs it as it has an EVF that is quite good. But it's not a bad idea, just not sure the demand will be there given it's current form factor.

Yes it does! I’m 99% sure. Reach out to Viper gears just to make sure but I’m almost certain. It’s been my main viewfinder for the camera for the last few months. Haven’t even bothered using a monitor. 😆
Thank you! Could you also please tell me if the fan noise of the Kommode is acceptable. I am shooting a lot of interviews often indoors in quiet and intime environments.
@user-qt5pf8oq3p yes it’s very quiet but I would keep the mic further away from the camera if you can. It’s a constant so it’s easy to cancel out if you find it’s not good. Audio recording on regular Komodo isn’t great so I always externally record, but X might be different with fan noise.

I notice when you're shooting on the beach in your demo you're using the WLF, but when you're addressing camera you're mainly showing the PM5. Do you change that up based on lighting conditions? Indoor vs outdoor shooting? i'm just trying to figure out which viewfinder to get. Your video was very helpful btw, thank you.
Simplicity. The PM5 is a bit more bulky but works better for professional shoots. The waist collapses flat for a super low profile and good for just casual use.

Hi Mark. I'm trying to build a light-weight setup for my Komodo, meaning no monitor, no gimbal, no steadycam, etc. When you use the PM5 are you able to get stable shots for client work without shooting in slow-motion or a stabilized lens? Or do you need a lens with built-in IS?
You can stabilize it handheld, I’ve done it. Smaller focal length is easier for sure and just depends on your own technique. But this is my preferred handheld. Very easy post imagine stabilization if on a longer focal length.
I don’t use any modern IS lenses with the Komodo, but I’m sure that will help makeup where technique fails.

I find it hard to get steady footage with a 7" monitor on top shooting handheld - even though I've tried using the old trick with a camera strap as a third point. How about the waist level viewfinder? Can you get stable footage with that? And how is it in the sun? Can you see anything? ... oh, and is it only the PM5 that enlarges the image or do the WLF do that as well?
Waist finder enlarges it a bit, but has more distortion on the edges. The PM5 has the right magic, I wouldn’t shoot client stuff with the waist either, the PM5 is optically a better monitor source. I like the waist for super minimal personal stuff cause it collapses flat and camera has a very low
profile. You need like a shoulder test w

Ya same! They tried to design around it but just couldn’t do it. This will have to do. A perfect world doesn’t exist so make the most of what you can I guess ;)
What a great setup 🔥 Which side handle do you prefer? Red wing handle or the GDU handle?
The GDU one goes on the left and had the rail mount so functionally it’s very different so hard to compare. I love them both for different reasons 😆
@@MarkHoltze That’s true, the additional rail mount is really nice. I was thinking to get two GDU handles but if the wing handle has a more comfortable grip then I would go for the same combo as you did
The wing is more comfortable I think. If you don’t need the rail I would go asymmetrical. But it’s so subjective

How did you get into videography? Is there any vintage lens that you would recommend which is easy to handle for it that doesn't need an expensive modifying in the beginning? I'm shooting so many photos but never took any videos except with my Osmo Action. Would be maybe good to get some experience in this area as well.
Hi Mex, it's really just a camera, there really is nothing special about it. Depending on what you shoot and require for the shoot, that's where the specs of the camera can come in handy. A lot of broadcasters/streamers want RAW video, the A7siii (is an amazing camera) but it doesn't have TRUE RAW, it can do PRORES RAW but some broadcasters sticklers with it.
The A7siii is technically a hybrid camera so the RED's are dedicated CInema cameras (video only) and a more relevant comparison would probably be the Sony FX6.
The FX6 is more of a long form documentary camera, the Komodo and RED's in general are more feature film, music video and short form commercials, but that's not a rule by any means.
I've been working in the film and TV industry for 19 years now, hard to say how I got it, just found one job that led to another job etc. I run my own production company but I mostly handle post production (editing), but have started to do a lot more shooting the last couple of years.
Most vintage lenses you can just shoot with, i think you're going to need to apply some tactical skill to it. I've done a bunch of videos on vintage lenses back in the catalog if you want to take a look, also lots of vintage lens reviews so you can see how they handle. I only recently got into modifying because i'm using them for professional shoots now, but in the beginning I just used them as is.

Can you tell us about the Lens Adapter? does it crop the lens of has a glass element to adapt the medium format image to a super 35 sensor?

The lens adapter is simply an adapter. I'm using a 35mm full frame Leica lens in this video but it's the same with all FF lenses on the komodo super 35mm sensor (1.33x crop). I'm not using any medium format lenses, I do have one, but I don't have an adapter that will correct that. I'm not sure any exist off hand, but a focal reducer would technically do that, but not sure if they're corrected for medium format lenses or not.
Simply adapting FF lenses to the S35 sensor gets me the results I like, any further testing is outside my area of expertise :)

I purchased one of these after watching this video.
The locking system is absolutely abysmal. I’ve tried this on three separate very good condition Hasselblad viewfinders. And they all fall off with very little effort. Some simply slide out from gravity. Certainly not solid enough for professional work.
You are however paying professional prices. At $340 it’s a little piece of anodized aluminum. For the price there should be a better locking system like a true lock rather than tiny ball spring detents. Remember this cost $340 for a tiny piece of aluminum.
Even adding a simple threaded 1/4-20 hole to screw in a locking screw, or spring loaded detent in the side. Anything to at least stop it from sliding out. $20 manfrotto plate mounts even have a spring loaded detent
It’s a phenomenal idea which is why I purchased it. Really needs a v2 with a lock, and pricing down to $199
Weird not my experience at all. Mine is still super secure after a year of use. What fire finders are you using? Both the waist level finder and the pm5. Sorry your experience wasn’t a positive one mate. Try discussing it with viper gears directly. Might be able to give you some more info as to why or help fix the problem.
@@MarkHoltze I have been in communication with them. Very good customer service. Upon seeing your review, that’s what compelled me to buy one because I saw how positive yours locked. I tried it on the waist level, pm45 and nc2 prisms.
I think either way in hindsight, based on the design, even if locked solidly, a firm bump would still send the prism flying out without some sort of latch or locking mechanism.
Otherwise yes it’s a great on the go evf, and makes me comfortable shooting without an external monitor for projects that are not as high stakes.
I just burned off so much money after watching this 😂

It’s metal, it’s machined and it’s solid and secure. I wouldn’t lay $5 for a 3D printed version. If you make money with the setup it’s a wash. Reliability is paramount. :)

We have lots of innovative solutions from Third party and Independant creators, but whats stops us from changing the camera industry for the better is our greed and hunger for Veru high profit margins. I mean they are selling just the screws for over $140... SCREWS!?!?
I'm seeing this in all 3d printed, independantly machined, and third party creators, they will make a part that solves an importsnt issue with an item. They will show it off on reddit or will share with a RUclipsr in the field. People on reddit will show interest but as soon as they mention the price everyone is turned off, (Ex: 52weeks Sigma SSD enclosure for over $100 for a simple rectangle print) few people will buy into it but after a few years it will go defunct.
We need to as filmmakers/creators/and designers need to be more willing to either share our designs, sell for affordable prices or for a growing number of people, release the STLs for free so that when you stop making these parts it doesnt just go the way of the dodo. (I'M LOOKING AT YOU EOS M LITE Rehousing 👁👁)

Is it? Pretty sure that’s subjective and a drop in the bucket if you’re making money with this kit. You’re entitled to your opinion, but that’s all it is. :)
I’m saying this as someone who bought it full price and uses it a number of times whilst getting paid, the convenience it adds to not have to worry about monitor, batteries, cables pays for itself in a matter of hours but that’s just my opinion.
Perhaps if it were mass produced price could reflect that, but that’s a very niche item and the way economics of manufacturing work given the small output makes sense.
