Hey Lee! Thanks for this excellent "how to"! I recently bought a BMCC6K Pro and this BM5WR! But I am a cine newbie-thank goodness we love to learn, eh Lee? From London, Ontario. Living in Montreal for the last 4 years. Awesome stuff Lee thanks for your help!
great video!! i just paired my bmpcc 4k with the BM5WR just now,. i'm able to control it from the monitor but the monitor isn't showing what's on my camera, the screen is the default screen. do i need to connect something else via cable? i thought that the blue tooth connection will also connect the video? thanks!
Yeah this monitor doesn’t give wireless video feedback at all … only wireless remote control but if you can’t see what you’re controlling .. it’s kinda pointless tbh
I have the wireless to my Komodo setup, but I can't see any image on the BM5 WR. I am only using Wireless. Do I need to have a cable hooked up to the Komodo and BM5 WR in order to see an image on the monitor?
Yeah u need a cable to get video feedback, this is not really a wireless monitor as much as it’s a wireless remote that you can use as a monitor IF you plug it in
hi there, i'm trying to use the False Color feature on the BM5WR (and not the false color on my BMPCC4K), But the color chart showing the IRE is Not showing up. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
@@LeeZavitz Thanks. That’s a deal breaker for me since controlling auto focus would be THE remote function that would be most useful to me. Anything else I don’t mind controlling from the Komodos own screen, but even the Smartphone app can do tap to focus. So I guess nice try by p Portkeys using WiFi instead of cables like SmallHD, but without focus control it misses the mark
Meh. I don’t really use autofocus so it doesn’t bother me. There’s also the chance they add it in firmware updates. It feels very beta to me anyway. We will have to see what the future brings.
Bro be careful with that Portkeys, it's fried the HDMI ports on several ZCams and it burnt out the HDMI port on two of my cameras (how I found out what it was). For SDI the general rule/order or operations is power everything on, the plug in SDI. Take SDI off first, then unplug power. It's a newer version so I'm sure it's good if you follow that but Portkeys had some serious issues. I've still gotta reach out to them and see if they're going to help out. Their customer service isn't bad so I'm hopeful, just a little sketch now.
Ah Damn that sucks. So far I haven’t had any issues. It’s been super nice to have a screen that bright out in the sun. But yeah thanks for the heads up
Hey dude. Great video - quick point though, have a quick check of your SDI cable and that it's 12G. I only say because it looks like I have the same 3G cables that I used for a bit which will bust your port. (I haven't seen the whole video yet so you might mention it (sorry if so aha!!))
Nice setup, love how quickly you can swap out shooting configs. Monitor looks like a decent option as well. More Komodo stuff if you're game. Maybe some exposure vids, workflow vids. Up to you though mate.
I have an issue using the portkeys monitor with the komodo, the video signal goes in and out. I tried changing the sdi res output the hz and other things, new sdi cable even new batteries on the monitor and its the same thing. It works fine but after a few mins the signal starts to go in and out help!! Am I doing something wrong?
That’s really weird. It could potentially be an issue with the monitor. If you changed cables and it still does it, it seems like a faulty monitor. Have you tried the monitor with any other camera?
@@LeeZavitz im going to check with another monitor. How can you tell if its a prob with the sdi port from the camera or the monitor, like what would it do if lets say rhe sdi port for damaged on the camera?
I don't recommend it as there have been reports of SDI ports being burned out by not using 12g SDI. Im now using these cables and they are really nice bhpho.to/3eYHmGh
Nice job man! Super clean setup. Just wondering why there is still an SDI cable on your setup. Is the wireless monitor reliable? Can you run a second monitor wireless as well for client for focus ducher? Thanks man this was super helpful. You bypassed a lot of my mistakes!
Great setup! I actually have a Ronin M as well but didn't use it for a few months and then the batteries stopped charging! It really sucks because now I feel like it's useless. Have you run into that with your Ronin M batteries, or do you know of a fix for this?
I’ve heard of this happening if they get to low from lack of use. I haven’t had any issues with that but I was usually using my ronin m at least once a month at minimum
Very good video!! Thanks! I'm waiting for my Komodo to arrive, still about two months. How are you going from gimbal to tripod? What plate are you using? I have a RS2 gimbal. I just got TILTA Float and now I'm thinking about all things together! How to jump from gimbal to TILTA Float to tripod THE easiest way!! anyway thanks for the video!!
I’m not sure about that setup. But I have a ronin quick release plate made by smallrig. And that is on the tripod. That way I can leave the ronin plate on the camera. www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1430515-REG/smallrig_1685_quick_release_clamp.html/?ap=y&gclid=CjwKCAjwtJ2FBhAuEiwAIKu19jIxSCh0oIDupYrXq68BKk8nhtH902Uao98vABXhLzNRepZzbng4WxoCerMQAvD_BwE&pcur=CAD&smp=y

amazing video! one question slightly unrelated but what is the name of the focus ring you have on your sigma 18-35? as I currently have the nucleus nano default one but it tends to slip and move about and your one looks a lot more secure
it’s a precision fit seamless ring followfocusgears.com/collections/sigma/products/seamless-follow-focus-gear-ring-for-sigma-18-35mm-f1-8-sigma-art-lens
damn so $12000 including tax
makes me feel good about my $4000 fx3

Sweet! So happy you got the red Komodo! Looking forward to future videos you shoot with this
Highly recommend the RED handle, especially if you like shooting handheld, that trigger button is very pleasing.
It’s a nice handle but Feels overpriced for a record button. I’d actually love a record button on the left side of the camera
such a clean rig
I have been looking for a practical rig for my use and I think I like yours the best. I am still waiting for the camera. Thanks for sharing!
the best setup that i've seen
That monitor. So good
Yeah I’m really impressed with it.

Not buying a red but drop the videos. Love the content bro
loved to see your post work flow and how the m1 handles it!!
Thanks for the rig walkthrough. Where did you get the side handles from, I might of missed it in the video?
Increase the the Komodo luv🎬
Bro, amazing clean setup! The part links are broken! Could you refresh those for us? Very important. Tks!!!
can u do a video about how to build your business up? from a single videographer to a studio with multiple employees?

Great Rig Review! and advice. Thanks
Does the wireless monitor control also control auto focus on the Komodo?
No. It’s just the basic settings of the exposure and frame rate

What size nato top rail did you get for underneath the side handle?
I think it actually came with the top handle now that I think of it. It’s the exact size of the cage.
Great video @leezavitz . Would love to see a video solely on your Ronin M Komodo setup. Bet a lot of other people would too.
also, send us the part number of the nato rail. Please
Well done, Lee. Thank you for posting.
Would love a full review also interested to know if the recent firmware update enables native RF lenses
Hello,
Does the image the Komodo is capturing also shows on the monitor wirelessly?
No. Just camera control
@@LeeZavitz , Thanks... Do you know if its the same for the Komodo X?
How long last the Komodo powered over the V-Mount?
Depends on the battery. 98wh usually get 2.5-3hrs. That’s also powering nucleus M
love this!!! definitely going to sub
Awesome video thanks.
. Just wanted to ask u a question what’s the best LUT to preview on my BM5WR monitor. Right now it doesn’t look good it’s almost a log like
Red has a lot of different creative luts you can install on the camera. I don’t use luts on the monitor I just use the lut output off the camera
Nice rig, looks like your SDI is 3g based on the thickness, you should only be running 12g sdi @ 75ohms with your Komodo so you're aware.
All Ive been running is 12g cables, I probably just grabbed a random Sdi cable when I shot this

Why do you have an SDI in cable connected to the monitor if it is wireless?
The video feed isnt wireless from camera to monitor. Just the control over the camera settings
How much does this rig cost in Total ? 👀 $$
Nice setup and do I want more content? YES PLEASE :)
Will do!
just a quick question, is the screen big enough to see if it is in focus compared to a 7inch?
100% I don’t like 7” monitor on camera. It’s too big (monitor size vs camera size)
@@LeeZavitz maybe but in 8k sometimes its hard to nail the focus

I have some 12g sdi cables. “Power issue” seems to be more of a order of connecting things when powered off AC.
@@LeeZavitz ah okay I wasn’t clear. So that Sdi issue is only present when connected to mains power /ac wall outlet?

that mf monitor can't stay connected for longer than 2 minutes it's infurirating
