  • A Florida woman has filed a $100 million class-action lawsuit against Frontier Airlines alleging the airline is not a budget airline, and that it uses "bait-and-switch" tactics when it comes to its baggage requirements and fees.

    Last early July, I flew with Frontier from LA to Denver, and on my way back, I was charged $99 on my way home to LA. The gate staff said that my wheels were one inch too wide even though the actual luggage met the 14x18x8 dimension policy. Prior to this trip, I had used the exact luggage on three prior round trips including my current outbound trip to Denver, without any fees! At Denver airport, I was targeted by the gate agent because she knew that my luggage had 9" wide wheels instead of 8"! The gate agent was getting a $10 commission for my $99 fee so I knew I couldn't talk any sense into her. I quietly paid the $99 and the next day I filed a complaint with Frontier threatening them that I was going on social media and on the news about their inconsistent luggage policy. Frontier refunded my $99. I'm happy that someone is suing Frontier!

    I just watched a video of Frontier gate staff who attempted to charge 4 passengers for what they claimed were oversized carry-on bags. They did this even though each passenger showed the staff that their bags fit inside Frontier's own "personal items" bag sizer. However, they then punished the 4 passengers by not allowing them to board, using the excuse that the gate was closed, which brought one man to tears. The staff even went as far as calling the cops on the person who videoed the incident, falsely accusing him of harassment. One of the cops sympathetically confided to the man that they get a lot of calls to Frontier because they always have a lot of problems. The video is on RUclips. But that's the point, travel light and take whatever seat is free. Paying next to nothing for airfare means that you can spend more at one's destination. If you are going to pay for carry on baggage, seat assignment fees, food, etc. then in most cases it would cost the same to fly a regular airline. But even the regular airlines charge fees. If I travel the discount airlines, I pack very little and buy stuff while I'm on vacation. Then I can store those items in my coat pockets or send them back home via UPS or FedEx, It's cheaper than paying to check or carry on extra baggage.

    I was flying with Frontier last year and right before we boarded the plane, they made a last minute announcement saying that prepaying for your bag is cheaper than paying at the airport if it doesn't meet the requirements. I was the last person to board the plane and I watched person after person getting told they had to pay the $99 fee for their bag. When it was my turn, the lady told me that my regular sized backpack was too big and I had to pay the fee. I asked to put my bag in the thing that measures it and she said it has to fit and when she turned around for a second and I just used all my strength to shove my backpack in there and make it fit. My family members from overseas that was flying with Frontier on the same route but an earlier flight each had to pay the fee(there was 5 of them). It is almost like they target people and get as many people as they can, it's insane. During the pandemic they were letting people in with bags stuffed to the point where the zipper almost broke, the only rule they enforced was wearing a mask.

    A backpack is a personal item on American Airlines, united and delta. Crazy part is that faa regulations make it mandatory for airlines to give the same personal item space under the seat. So if you fly the same aircraft the a320 neo on American and frontier that same bag will fit under the seat. Frontier is giving false information to costumers, as those bag that are personal items that is slightly bigger will fit. It fits on all other airlines.

    Another Frontier scam is where they show u the available flights. Many will have a day layover but ONE appears as if u will arrive same day. Well I quickly purchased that flight. The very next day, I get an alert indicating a change to my flight😳 Keep in mind, my flight was a month away. I tried contacting an agent and speaking with a representative... that's when I found out they did away with Live agents. Talk about frustrating. Since we had a day layover, we HAD to opt for a carry-on (since our checked luggage would be headed home). Hubby and I generated one carry-on, had to get a hotel... and jus other unnecessary fees for a flight we didn't choose. I believe that's part of their scam as well. You think you're selecting a flight but ultimately they're going to give u the flight they want to give you and there's nothing you can do about it.
    Also, I considered CANCELING the flight since I had plenty of time to find a new flight with another airline but I believed, in that moment, that the process would have caused more issues; plus there's no financial department to call for assistance.

We had a connecting flight in Denver and would not be allowed to board without paying $100 for each small bag. We wanted to consolidate the bags because we didn’t have that much stuff to pay $100 a piece. Mom and aunties had food in their bags so they wanted to throw them away. Frontier agents were horrible. Don't be low IQ. The reason they charge more at the gate is to discourage travelers from taking the gamble and seeing if the attendant won't notice their bags.
      You clearly have no idea how many people are always looking to scam a company out of any money they can. If they allowed you to pay the same fee at the gate, they'd have 70% of their passengers with oversized bags. The way the passengers see it, a) the attendant doesn't notice and they get free baggage or b) they do notice and pay the fee they would have paid.
      But yeah, the airline should totally change their policy to benefit scammers and people who can't plan ahead and hurt their business.

I knew what it weighed, and had previously weighed it on a scale a couple of scales over (also United) while rearranging my items between bags. THIS HAPPENED TO ME TOO!!! A few months ago I was flying from Baltimore to Atlanta, and was looking to get the cheapest tickets so I got the one flying there on Frontier, and the other on Spirit. I didn’t want to pay for a bag, so I decided to do personal item only, using my rolling backpack which I frequently travel with as a personal item that fits under the seat on multiple airlines. As I was boarding, they made me put the backpack inside of the box and it couldn’t fit all the way in, so they charged me $99!!! Even though it still fit in my underseat on that flight!!!Once I got to the destination airport, I tested it again comparing the boxes at Spirit and Frontier to see if I needed to pay for my bag on Spirit, and the rolling backpack FIT on Spirit, so I didn’t have to pay! I found Frontier airlines to be the worst airline I’ve ever traveled with.

    Something similar happened to me when I moved from California to NYC! I had 3 cats and had to pay for the carrying case 2 times for each cat! It was about like 300 dollars plus you pay for the animal also so it was about 1000 dollars. It was more expensive for the cats that did not have a seat than me

    Everyone knows that they charge more when you’re at the gate then when you’re at the counter checking in or online. Also, every airline has a little bit different size on personal bag but yeah if they shrinking the size at the gate that’s totally messed up

    • @AFIDesign
      @AFIDesign 9 месяцев назад

      They aren't shrinking, people just don't read carefully and follow the rules, then cry victim if they get called out on it. I travel frequently and the sizers are the same for each airline in the front of the airport and at the gate. Key thing to note is that different airlines have different bag sizing guidelines.

    Frontier just did almost the same thing to me on Monday. I got through security with my boarding pass got to the park. Owner tried to go on my phone. It wouldn’t pull it up no longer and they told me if I wanted to get out of pain I had to pay $50 from your boarding pass for them to print out. I will never fly frontier again they rip you off and they need a lawsuit against.

    Delta needs to get looked into as well. If you’re traveling with two people and the limit is 50lb and one bag is 46 and the other bag is 54. You shouldn’t have to take crap out of one to put it into the other just to make them both 50lb.

    Frontier did this on purpose. I fly to denver out of indy a few times a year. Frontier always had good flight times so I bought a bag that met the size requirements. I flew with it several times and it was always fine. Then on a RETURN flight they popped me $100 for my bag. Get that, Fine on the way there $100 on the way back. The fricking bag only cost $69 to buy it.
    To Frontier: I haven't flown your airline since. I hope you banked that $100 cause your not getting any more from me.

Then Denver wouldn't let us thru saying they wouldn't fit. My friend took a picture but still they made us pay. My friend and I bought canvas bags and left our luggage behind so we didn't have to pay but they still tried anyways. More people need to do this.

      You’re making a technical distinction that’s pointless. Do you really think passengers give two shits who writes a gate agent’s paycheck? Regardless if they’re a contractor or direct employee of Frontier, they’re the face of the airline and doing direct work for them. They are the ones incentivized by the airline to engage in baggage fee bait and switch fraud. If your point is a legal technicality (and full disclosure, I’m a lawyer and judge of over 26 years) it’s a moot point even still since Frontier bears direct liability for their front line employees contractually in this scenario under federal law.

    Well now I know never to use Frontier when it comes to flying. Bare in mind that I've never flown on the airline, but being charged $100 to put a bag under the plane sounds very excessive, especially when most other airlines don't even charge that much for putting the bags under. Also it seems to me that their measurements are way smaller than most others as well. I don't even have a bag that's 18" to begin with (mine is 20). I feel like the low cost airlines in Europe are way better at this process in general as I've flown theirs once & didn't have a single issue.

      Frontier is extremely messy. People frequently complain about them and Spirit all the time. If it's not dubious fees, it's (significant) lateness due to maintenance. The last 3 times I've flown pretty much brought me to my breaking point. Luckily I didn't have much commitments then, now I do - so no more Frontier for me.

    If frontier goes out of business I would buy the airline if I had the money and go on an upgrade spree. Reclining seats with adjustable headrests but, still have affordable fares. I would raise the minimum pitch to 30 inches and provide complimentary drinks and snacks. Might not bring back the TVs from the old days of frontier due to royalty and equipment costs and still want to keep that airline green but do everything I can to make it America’s best low budget airline.

    Then when we got on they told me I had to put my stuff under my seat because they overbooked and wanted the 2 passengers they had just let on to have space
    I told them I would not be putting it under my seat as I paid and I was traveling with a disabled relative
    The flight and attendant came over took my stuff out the overhead bin and threatened to kick me off for not listening to him
    I called for the other flight attendant and explained to her unless she wanted an American Disability Act complaint along with a federal aviation complaint and one with my attorney general for not honoring the baggage pay structure… she needed to check her colleague…

One lady was only carrying a 20L backpack and it fit their bag sizer when she took out her laptop but the frontier lady was like nope or else your not getting on the flight and she didn’t want to argue fearing they will not let her board and going to miss the flight and have to wait the next day. She ended up paying. For me it was a paper bag in it was my friends jacket and pants with my snowboard helmet it fit in the sizer after I squeeze it but again the lady wouldn’t let me so i had to pay also.

    @billyb4613 9 месяцев назад +2

    All you people complaining need to remember: you CHOSE to fly Frontier. And you probably chose to fly them because they have a very cheap fare.
    That fare "unbundled" from the what most people expect from air travel. There's a reason major airlines will charge, say, $432 for the same route that a low cost carrier might charge $129. It's because they have bundled everything into a more "complete" product while the low cost carriers give you a seat. If you want to select that seat, that costs more. If you want snacks, that costs more, if you want a carry-on, that costs more. If you elected to pay all those fees, guess what?? Your total cost would probably come out to be somewhere around that $432 mark that a major legacy carrier charges.
    It's pretty well known that no matter how much hassle and frustration people go through with airlines, they always come back to choose the lower fare. So all you people complaining, the airline doesn't care because they know you'll be back to buying their airfare the next time you want to fly to Vegas and Frontier is charging $89 while American charges $159.
    All that being said, this will be interesting to see how this suit plays out. If the allegations are true that employees are getting commissions, it's very believable that they would manipulate post-security bag sizer boxes to get a few extra bucks. Again, these are low cost carriers which means they have very narrow margins. They're not known for having the highest quality employees or very good pay, in my extensive experience working at airports, the employees that work for the low cost carriers or handle their flights (sometimes they contract out to other companies) aren't very honest or competent.
