- Joe Tex is one of my favorite Unsung artists of the 1970s. I dare you not to dance along to this video.
Joseph Arrington Jr. (better known as Joe Tex; August 8, 1935[1] - August 13, 1982) was an American singer and musician who gained success in the 1960s and 1970s with his brand of Southern soul, which mixed the styles of funk, country, gospel, and rhythm and blues.
His career started after he was signed to King Records in 1955 following four wins at the Apollo Theater. Between 1955 and 1964, he struggled to find hits, and by the time he finally recorded his first hit, "Hold What You've Got" in 1964, he had recorded 30 previous singles that were deemed failures on the charts He went on to have four million-selling hits, "Hold What You've Got" (1965), "Skinny Legs and All" (1967), "I Gotcha" (1972),] and "Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With No Big Fat Woman)" (1977). Joe Tex was nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame six times, most recently in 2017. - Wikipedia

First time Joe Tex perform this song , It was televised was on Soul Train. The dancer who was pulled on stage with Mr. Tex was none other than Miss Damita Jo Freeman. She threw down!!! From there she became a "Star''.
Damita Jo was AMAZING on that performance! ❤❤
will never forget that performance.
That is my Auntie Mita!!!!
I am so proud to call this man my cousin! RIP cousin Joe; we love you and we miss you.🎤🎙🎶😎
You have a very talented cousin
I really liked Joe tex 👍🏾
Very talented and nice man, my Daddy brought him to Montgomery to sing. Shep Shelton was my father and I remember seeing Joe Tex when I was a teenager ♥️
I still miss Tex. 😥
...I always like Mr.Joe Rex, he called them like he saw them!
Tex continued recording hits until 1972, when he decided to pursue life as a minister in the Nation of Islam after converting in 1966. He came back to music after the death of the Nation’s leader, Elijah Muhammad in 1975. His last public appearance was in 1981. After that, Tex retreated from the public eye and retired to his ranch in Navasota, Texas with his wife Beliliah Hazziez. When Tex converted to Islam, he changed his name to Yusef Hazziez. He had five children: Earthra Doucet, Joseph Arrington III, Ramadan Hazziez, Jwaade Hazziez, and Joseph Hazziez. Joe Tex died at his home in Navasota, Texas from a heart attack on August 13, 1982. He was 47 years old.
Thanks for sharing that history ✌️🙏💯
Thank you! We appreciate great history like this.
That is a horrible story.. noi is a monstrous hate cult.
47 is so young. That’s sad.I remember this song. Thanks for that info about him.
Thanks for sharing the info.
Those are the coolest outfits on those girls! Far out!!!:)
I went to see him perform 6months before he passed. In a former jazz club in L.A....The Parisian Room! Off of Pico. The saxophonist from Oingo Boingo, Dale, took me. What a night!
Joe Tex had a monster jam here and the dancers were the truth
This just reminded me I was 9 years old and I'd be outside playing in the morning and at 11 a.m. I'd hurry home to watch the Soul Train
Those outfits are everything!🌞
Funkin up the Funk! Seriously.. that's some serious wardrobe!!!
I could see why JB was intimidated, Joe Tex kept him working. RIP to both legends.
Remember seeing on soultrain. The young lady grabbed her leg and held it. The look on his face was priceless.

I almost fell on the ground laughing when I saw this video....My X wife hated this song with a passion...HA !
The house parties we had in the 60's and 70's !! Joe Tex music was a part of them!! We didn't get to see him dance a lot back then but he had the moves!!
Yes we danced anywhere at all times from portable record players, 🎶🎶 music from 🪟 windows, car radios, cassettes, DJs in the parks, block parties, at the beach. I am remembering doing those exact dance move as I dance around my room.. Waiting to see how low can you go how low can you go 🎶🎶🎶💃🏿🕺🏿🏥😷🥃. Good times I thought they'd be forever Yes Joe Tex gone but never forgotten 💃🏿🕺🏿🎶💃🏿🕺🏿🎶🕺🏿💃🏿🎶🎶

GREAT SONG OF MY TEEN AGE YEARS 1972.
I LOVE IT !
He was sososso underrated
Joe Tex would be in trouble these days. For the lyrics and the dancing.
I was 13 when this song was out.♥️
I just now read a reference to Joe Tex in Bob Dylan's book, "Chronicles." I couldn't remember how he sounded, so here I am! Dylan said he was watching The Tonight Show one night and saw Joe treated coldly by Johnny Carson when he sang on his show. Interesting...
This is a true GEM!!! lmbo
Man! Love the song and performance. But Sisters have ALWAYS BEEN FINE!!!! My God!
Joe Tex! . . . All Time Throwback CLASSIC!!! 😄😄😄 I Gotcha!!! . . . Ha ha ha!!! We go to bed at 9 and pretend to be sleeping but you know we were peeping in our pj’s . . . laughing and dancing!!! 💕 Thanks For Sharing!!! 😎💕🙏🏾Blessings
Sometimes I forget that people could really dance in those days.
Oh, how I remember when this song was huge.
Beautiful beautiful
I was about eight years old when That record came out could not stop jamming to it then can’t stop jamming to it now. They don’t make fun records like that anymore. Damn shame.
I was around 5 or 6 depending on when it came out in 1972. My how time flies.
What I liked about music years ago was that everyone knew what the hits were. I didn't matter if you were 90 or 5, you knew what was on the radio. Now I don't get that feeling. With all the outlets for music, I couldn't tell you what the hit songs are. Soul Train, Casey Kasem, Ed Sullivan, we miss you !!

Ooooooowwwwweee them were the days!!
Great song! Cool two-step! My man Joe Tex!
That was Rockin! Give it here!
“i’d be the next one to ease on innnn”. You know Joe Tex was a southern man
They wasn’t playing wit them long boots on 🤣
Great post!! Joe Tex was the man James Brown stole a lot of his moves from!!! Great recording artist left music for the Nation of Islam and came back to music and did the hit "I Aint Gonna Bump No More!" Great Post!!!
If that was his come back song 😂 he wasted time in the nation of hislam and we lost out on some year of good music. Joe Tex X
James stole his moves😂 you must have never seen james brown or maybe you confusing him with Eddie Murphy.
@@davidlynn3631 No. He actually did steal his moves & Little Richard was the one to actually confirm it They had both opened for Little Richard during tours - separately & a few times all together. He said he noticed James show changed drastically after watching Joe perform.
We had a hell of an era, musically seen! Feels as if all of the genres in modern music got initiated in those years! A course to/of perfection!
The outfits are EVERYTHING❣
MR. JOE TEX GAVE US SO MUCH JOY" FUN" & KNOWLEDGE THROUGH HIS 🎶 MUSIC" THANKS SIR!!! RIP 👑 KING!!
Joe Tex....solid brother.
I love Joe Tex!!!! I saw him at the Apollo Theater when l was a kid back in the 1960s...68. My favorite song is "Tell Me Right Now". ( this song is very hard to get! I have his greatest hits CD. this rare song is NOT on any of his albums or cds) You can listen to this song ..right here on the RUclips .
Actually it is out on CD 25 Greatest Hits by Joe Tex
I miss this so much, I used to dance this like crazy!!
I may be a stinking white guy but I loved this when it was new had to have the 45 record and i love good music and showmanship!
met Joe Tex when I was a little kid during the 'I Got Ya' days. Must have stopped in DC for a show I guess. Made a stop at my elementary school. I was thrilled and can barely remember why.
I actually remember watching this when it originally aired ❤👍🏾👍🏾
Stop it... You would have to be like late 50's or 60 at the least to remember this, if it was on TV
Taneka Roberts you know how it works. Face says says 20 something birth certificate says 40 something. It is true that black don’t crack. 😂 I just let people think I’m 29. 🤷🏾♀️🤣
@@TanekaRoberts I'll be 54 in December😊❤
I was a little girl, but watching Soul Train was a ritual for us, each Saturday afternoon after the cartoons❤😊
@@voodoochile4147 ❤❤
@mochawitch STOP! No way you're 54! Just stop it¡ Lol😁
I remember the song but NEVER saw the video. Petty Bold for back then! Go Joe and the ladies. LOL
I had this song on a 45 record . STAX record label.
That's how we use to dance, with our mug all broke down and stuff. Skinny legs and all. Ain't that right, yall.
Absolutely Loved This...
This brings back such memories for me.
Omg! This was one of my favorite jams in 1972..I would go around singing "now give it here, I GOT YA"..
Ah huh huh

Oh my goodness, this was so much fun to watch! I was a year old when this came out. Never heard it but got it kick out of it just now! 🤣🤣

Seriously those were the days 🤩
"I'll teach you to play with my affection. Now give it here. Never should have promised it. Now give it here. Don't hold back, Don't say nothin', just give it here!" Somebody call the sheriff because the raging bull is out the barn.
Yes Janet Jackson and him on soul train was nice 🙂
Oh...we had this 45 record when I was a kid!!!!
Did you have Skinny Legs and All, too?
ThumbsUp for the Catching Attenpt in the End, he was almost there to catch the Liitle Wing :)
I never heard this song before😁.Catchy tune.
I remember this song from high school. Thanks for the post.
Just Awesome~!
The first 10 seconds makes me smile. 😁🎶
Belmont Highschool Los Angeles 1970-73, really great song for Friday night students dance in the girls gym, and it was grinding dancing too.. Which of course made the chaperone teachers have to come and separate us; it was a different time back then, thanks to the draft for the Vietnam War.
I don't care how corny the song is the diet as are gonna make it work. I think somebody in my family bought that 45. That was the horniest song that ever come through the house. Lol
Good Golly Miss Molly was a salacious number.
gotta love joe tex
"Don't hold back now give it here".
I guess that is the most beautiful dancing of Funky !
Every time I heard Mystikal’s Shake Yo Ass, I thought of this song. Lol
He must have been an influence. Good ear!
hannibal090 every thing Mystikal did reminds me of this song
Years ago I heard the Blowfly song (on vinyl) titled: "Shake ya Thang". I think Mystical might have sampled that.
Had this on a 45 , fun party song .🍁
I'm not sure what I think about this nice instrumentals definitely hype
I was 12 when this came out in 1972, it sounds just as good now.
Ledgen Classic HANDS down Salute
This was my music as a kid and I loved it
Never heard until now. It's good!
Legendary performer!!
