My two older brothers worked at a Harris Pine furniture factory located in Hutchinson, MN in the late 1970s while going through the local private academy there. In fact my oldest brother made a rocking chair while there that he gave to our mom which she still has to this day. Merry Christmas! 🌲 ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

When it comes to wood, I am happy to have any variety that's not particle board covered with paper or plastic.

Great dresser restoration video!!! I am sitting here writing this comment on a Harris Pine Mills desk I have had since about 1955, maybe even longer; I would have been 10 years old then. At the time we lived in Athena, OR, about 20 minutes from the Harris Pine Mills in Pendleton, OR. I remember before buying it going to someone's house my dad either knew or worked with and seeing one assembled and finished in a dark color. I told my parents I wanted mine finished in a dark color. I was told "No, blonde is the new color." I have been unhappy with the color ever since!!! Always thought one day I would refinish it in a dark color. BUT!!! I take care of the stuff I own. It has been moved 7 times, my daughter used it in High School and College, and when she moved to get her Master's degree I took it back. I'm 79 years old now, so if I am going to do it, I need to get to it. Checking it out, The sides are good, the inside where your legs go are good, one of the deep file drawers has about a 6" scratch on it, but I think I can just touch that up. The center front drawer needs refinished and the top really needs some work. There is a split in the top about 14" long; I am thinking I might work glue into the split and if I take a drawer and back off, rig up a way to clamp it. Maybe reinforce it with 1/4" plywood underneath. The one thing I am not sure about is the solid piece between the side where you put your legs and the front drawers. The way it was cut the growth rings in the wood come out to the side, the soft rings wore down and the hard ones have sharp points that catch your pants leg. I am afraid if I try to take it out and replace it I will mess it up. Thought about just filling that area with epoxy. Now thinking if I can just cut down the front about 1/8" and glue a new piece of wood on front. How do do that and get a straight edge for glueing??? Wonder if I can rig up some sort of a jig and cut it down with a trim router.

Merry Christmas, Barry! That was a splendid restoration! The wax finish allowed the woodgrain to really pop, and it is a beautiful grain. To me, painting over such a beautiful woodgrain would be like putting Mother Nature in a body bag. I'm looking forward to seeing what you accomplish in the next year. Hooray! I was born in Pendleton in 1957. There was a mill called Harris Pine there at one time, but I never heard about a furniture manufacturer that I remember. I grew up 28 miles away in Hermiston, and now live 54 miles away in Elgin. Pendleton is the home of PRCA rodeo The Pendleton Round-up. It is at the foot of the Blue Mountains, the source of the pine wood milled there. It’s a small world, a long way from Madison, WI!.

Depending on the period, various type of woods are highly desirable or underrated. Fashion is a concept that also applies to intérieur décoration.
I don’t know whether it is more a European thing or not but here, the “best” and timeless interior are created in mixing various styles in an harmonious whole. Various types of woods can easily coexist in a room when it is thought as a whole, blending them in terms of colour shapes and sizes.
The fact that talented craftsmen - and women - such as you exist and do an amazing job gives us the possibility to live in homes that are comfortable, esthetically stunning while not being standardized or out of a catalog.
Your job is Important. You do it great. Thank you for doing it, Barry.
I wish you a happy holiday from France.

I wonder if pine will make a comeback, especially with that finish you used. It's so wonderfully natural. Thanks for all your videos this year, Barry. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Ory-gun. Yes, that's really how you pronounce Oregon=Ory-gun. Only we natives run the two syllables together quickly so that it sounds like Ore-e-gun. Emphasis on the middle syllable.

We used to buy pine when we were younger, for family furniture, but as it turned yellow and got the odd ding in it, we waited till we could afford better then cast it aside. It amazes me how the finish turned to powder as you scraped it.

Merry Christmas Barry. Lovely restoration of what could easily be dismissed as nothing much. Once you get your magic hands on it you really bought it back to life. Love listening to your stories and your voice is so calming. Thank you, you are a star👏👏👏

I agree with your statement to many people I see refinishing furniture paint them. Especially beautiful wood grain and there color. Covering up pieces in oak, walnut and hardwood pieces. I think your woodworking skills are really impressive. Keep up the good work.❤😊

I can remember when my older sister ordered unfinished furniture from the Sears catalogue. Also, there were unfinished furniture stores where you could buy it.

What a cute little dresser. Nowadays it's way too small for all the clothes we have.. a lesson learned perhaps 😅

Growing up my sister and I both had pine dressers. We thought our dad had made them in HS shop class. FOund out later that he had just varnished them.
