- You don't want to miss this one. I found this Painted Mid-Century 6 Drawer Lowboy Dresser at the thrift store for $35. The Dresser was made by Drexel Furniture Company, one of my favorite furniture manufacturers from the 1960s. Because of all the details on this dresser, removing the paint will prove to be difficult. In this video we will discuss the possible new furniture trends for 2022. You won't believe the transformation! Thank you for watching.

Amazing transformation. It always makes me sad to see quality old furniture that has been, more often than not, badly painted. I blame the shabby chic craze of the recent past. Let's hope more people will learn to appreciate the natural beauty of wood and furniture design, be it mid-century or earlier periods.
Let's hope it is just a trend
My thoughts to a T JP Purves
It’s always part of a pyramid scheme too. They buy the paint and the ‘right’ to sell the paint. But they have to prepay and buy in bulk. Worse it is always cheap paint and part of some magic system that doesn’t require sanding or prep work. It ALWAYS bubbles and flakes off eventually.
the ikea minimalism and farmhouse looks are also hitting antiques hard. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen gorgeous pieces just painted bright white and left that way or then “distressed” to look all worn, without care for the actual item at all
@@arcatia66 unfortunately I often have to tell people the antique phonograph, radio, or tv they want to sell was only worth money BEFORE they turned it into the kitschy fish tank, bar, “art” piece.
I feel like the dresser breathed a sigh of relief after being covered in all that paint.
Beautiful job!
Well said. Thank you for this comment. Barry
Beautiful restoration, such a lovely piece of furniture under all that paint. I have come to hate all that distressed "farmhouse" and "shabby chic" look, or drawers painted and covered with mod podge appliques. Particularly when it's committed on such a quality piece like this one.
I agree with you Lee. Thank you for the feedback and support. Barry
Wow, the finish is on the dresser is gorgeous! A hidden drawer/box?! I've never heard of, let alone seen, such a cool feature! I bet it looks as good or better than the day it was manufactured. Great job!
Hi Beverly! This secret drawer surprised me as well. I was lucky to find it. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. Barry
Beautiful restoration. I like to see when a good piece of furniture is restored rather than painted over. Love your recording style and sensibility.
Thank you. These comments are so encouraging. Barry
yeah agreed but if it was properly painted it could also look nice.
I love watching furniture flipping transformation videos, but most of the time I feel like there is something lacking with with pieces like this. Paint has its place and can work wonders, but a true restoration is truly beautiful and fitting when possible. Thank you for taking these pieces of history and bringing them back to the way they were originally meant to look and more. Absolutely stunning!
Hi Vanessa! I really appreciate you bringing attention to my approach. I hope to find more pieces like this to do proper restorations. Thank you for supporting the channel. Barry
As much as I appreciate your craftsmanship and artistry (and patience!) I appreciate as much or more your apparent reverence for the pieces you choose to make pretty again. Today I found one more thing to add to my appreciation list, your humility and desire to serve others. A beautiful thing.
Comments like yours make my day, Kristi. Thank you for your kindness.
Barry
I feel like this piece must be thanking you for bringing it back to its glory. There's a lot of low-quality furniture out there to be painted and made over and that's great. But it's sad to see when true quality wood pieces are mistreated by flippers. Yes to beautiful wood!
Thank you, Melissa. I love the natural wood grain beauty.
Barry
I guess I never knew you were a fellow health care worker (or I forgot...I'm old LOL) THANK YOU for doing what you do in this crazy time. I almost died from covid variant pneumonia, and I owe the folks who cared for me so much more than my life. Once I was fully treated with 2 rounds of Moderna I volunteered to help out in our small hospital and I routinely bake for and loan out my truck to the traveling HCWs so they can get out of the hotel once in a while. I've been refinishing furniture for decades, but I've learned a lot watching both you and Angie...Thank you for these videos!
So glad your story has an amazing ending. Hope you are well, and trust me, the work you are doing now to pay it forward is appreciated by so many people. Don't stop finding ways to help others. I'm certain you are an amazing human being
Oh YEAAAAHHHH! Knocked it clear out of the park! That finish just glows!! 🙏
Also- you totally nailed the cozy part- I totally want to hang out by that fire with hot chocolate! Hahaha
Nice job, Barry. ❤️❤️
Thank you Angie! I love your videos and can't believe how many of your videos I found as I was searching for Odie's Ideas. I think I have watched all your videos : ) Barry
Totally agree with you Angie !
As a former mover, I appreciate that you called the horizontal dresser a "low boy". For those that don't know, a vertical dresser is called a "tall boy".
Thank you for this : )
As a woodworker, I have always had a hard time painting wood furniture, regardless of trends. This is an absolutely beautiful restoration, great job.
Wow. Thanks Brad
You totally gave a new life to a beautiful piece of furniture. Thank you for mentioning this overdone furniture painting thing. I definitely see the benefits in painting furniture SOME TIMES. I am also a huge, huge fan of Angie on Transcend Furniture Gallery and I have noticed that she will refinish the original wood/wood veneer on pieces as much as possible. On those pieces with no hope of refinish, she paints. That makes such perfect sense to me. I must admit I am a wood and “natural” snob but definitely understand there are times and reasons to paint. Angie loves to emphasize saving pieces from the landfill. Amen to that! Paint or landfill?? No brainer there. Thanks for this great video.
Thank you for sharing Liz. Angie is a good friend
I do love Angie’s channel and keep up with all her videos. I should have suspected these two restorers would be friends as they both love to restore wooden furniture to its former glory. I also am right there with you with regards to painting furniture and the shabbily chic trend. I certainly can admire the style when it is well done but it is not for me. I kept my 70’s furniture so long that it is back in again and i still love it. It gets its occasional coat of Howards Feed and Wax and it glows. Some people have that ability to see beauty in a scruffy worn piece and they don’t just save it, they recreate it. As long as it is sturdy it is definitely a win. Bless them both and all those that see beauty when the rest of us just walk on by.
First of all… WOW that turned out amazing 🤩 the finish is beautiful and definitely super cozy. Second, you’re so nice mate 🥰 thanks for all the love. This is an awesome video !
You're a great friend!
Thank you for un-painting it!
there's nothing worse than a lovely piece of furniture destroyed with paint. Love that you're restoring them.
I agree
Why anyone would have painted that wonderfully fine piece of furniture is stultifying. What a magnificent job of restoring this back to its original, glorious wood!! Very well done!!!
Thank you so much! I truly enjoyed working on this piece.
Barry
It always makes me happy when I see old furniture being restored to its original state, it turned out absolutely amazing 💕💕💕💕💕
Thank you Angela
Thank you for bringing this piece of furniture back to its former beauty.
You always do a careful and thorough job.
Hi Rosalie! Thank you. I still have so much to learn but I am so grateful for such a supportive RUclips family. Barry
Angie was the first person I followed on you tube and she led me to you and mayfield restorations and flipping drawers.
I love beautiful restorations like this! I must say I get tired and frustrated when I see flippers paint everything in sight. I enjoy respect for craftsmanship of the past and for the wood itself. Thank you for sharing a lovely restoration!
Thank you for your kind words.
Barry
Just WOW! Love that restoration. Not every piece of furniture needs to be painted. So glad you brought it back to its original beauty. Love that little hidden bin. I would use it to store valuables - if I had any. Lol. Subscribed to the new channel and look forward to watching it as well. 🥳
Hi Shirley. I love seeing comments like yours. I am overwhelmed by the amount of support from so many viewers, including you. Thank you for watching, and for supporting both channels. New tool video should be uploaded today. Dresser video this weekend. Barry
Not sure why someone covered up such a breathtakingly beautiful piece. Thank you so much for giving it its beautiful life back.
Hi Melissa. I agree. Thank you for the comment. Barry
Just saw someone on Instagram painting a quarter sawn oak gorgeous dresser. Aghhh, all it needed was a refresh - never paint. It hurts 💔 inside to see that.
Just subscribed, beautiful job. I will enjoy watching your other projects.
@@MadCityModern
When I see real wood painted …I cringe 😬. I swear I’m going to have my Cherry dining set cremated with me to keep it from being painted
"You're right, and here's a good look at it". Ha!! I laughed so loud! Your voice is your fortune, and your ideas, and skills are so, so wonderfully realized. Huzzah! Stay warm!
Wow. Thank you Elaine. This comment really made my day. Glad you got a good laugh as well. Thank you for watching and supporting the channel. Barry
I would choose a wood burning fireplace over a gas or electric every day! So cozy. That chest is stunning. Beautiful job of restoration.
Thank you. It was very peaceful for me. Barry
What a stunning piece! This popped up in my suggested videos, and is the first video of yours I've seen, but I think I'll spend the next few days binging all of your other ones. Thank you for sharing the work you do!
Hey Chris. Thank you for watching. Welcome to the channel. I keep hearing how this video is popping up in the suggested videos for new viewers. This is all new to me. Thanks for the support. The channel has come a long way so keep that in mind as you watch the older less polished videos. Barry
So happy to hear you are aware of Angie’s site. The two of you do such beautiful work restoring furniture. Such a pleasure to watch.
She is incredible
Angie is one of my favourites too, and the reason I started following furniture restoration channels! She was the first furniture flipper I started following and now I've added many of them to my channels list! :D Furniture flipping is such a pleasant genre, I especially enjoy removing the old paint/finishing and applying new finishes parts. And of course final reveal with old and new comparison shots. And I like to follow those who are kind and are not putting down other RUclipsrs for their choices and preferences on how they do stuff. I was so happy to see Angie being mentioned in this video, and now I even like this channel more. Nice community feeling.
Wow, what a comeback for such a beautiful dresser. Bet your cat appreciated it’s new toys.
Thank you, Philomena.
Barry
This piece transformed back into its old but beautiful glory. You made it beautiful again, and it glows with thanks.
Hi Leah. Thank you for the support : ) barry
Looks wonderful. More timeless and much less trendy than when it was painted.
I agree. Thank you. Barry
That looks so much better than before! And I like your thoughts.
While painting is always an option, I like wood because of its inherent beauty. The asymmetry of painting is that it's a lot more work to undo than to do in the first place.
I wonder if a layer of shellac under the paint could be encouraged, partly as a way to make it more readily removed.
This is one of my favorite comments. This is the approach I am trying to take. Saying it is ok for others to paint, but just not my first choice. Regarding laminate, I'll paint over that all day everyday : ) Barry
Paint stripping is so satisfying to watch. Must be even more satisfying to do 😂🤤🤣… the way things look when they’re finished really is impressive. How gorgeous.
So satisfying to see it happen
You are a first American that I found very soft spoken and well manner when speaking, I am not into mid century furniture but it was enjoyable because of you, cheers my friend.
Wow. Thank you for this feedback! Barry
Painting a piece of furniture like this one is a "criminal" act. This is beautiful.
Great job.
Hi Jo. It is certainly frustrating spending days trying to remove all the paint. Thank you for the support and the comment. Barry
I am blown away at this restoration. Your hard work and patience paid off in a big way. The hidden drawer is so cool! I keep all the cards and notes that my nieces and nephews have given me over the years and I would use that little drawer for those keepsakes. Transcend and Flipping Drawers are awesome channels. I look forward to their videos, along with yours, every week. Have a great day!
Hi Marcella. This is the best idea yet for that hidden drawer. You obviously have some things that are very special. Thank you for sharing. Barry
I don’t care how good a person is with a paint brush or which technique is used, you just can’t beat the beauty of the natural wood that Mother Earth put there in the first place. That is lovely!🤗🐝❤️
I was thinking the same thing today as I was looking through slabs of walnut at the Habitat Re-Store today. Can't beat the natural wood grain! Love this comment. Thank you Deborah!
@@MadCityModern You’re most welcome!🤗🐝❤️
Beautiful! So glad you brought the dresser back to its former glory.
Thank you!
You did an amazing job on this piece. The final result is so beautiful. You must have spent so much time stripping every last bit of that paint off and sanding this piece. The work you put in really shows.
Time well spent, but not sure I want to do that for every project. Thank you for the support and the friendship! Barry
Another beautifully done restoration. I also hope this a direction for the future.
Thank you Donna. I enjoy your comments. Barry
Even though it's not your cup of tea, you put a lot of love into it, and I think it turned out very nice
Thank you
I would use that secret drawer for jewelry or coins. Beautiful transformation, gorgeous finished product, very well done, sir!
Oh that's just beautiful!
Thank you Moranda!
Not only are you a great furniture restorer but also a very decent man. Keep up the good work!
I'm also looking forward to following your new channel.
Thank you. I am grateful for all the wonderful people who continue to support the channel, including you Gina. Barry
Beautiful job! Thanks for being one of the people who wants to keep the old things alive 🙏🏻
Thank you for watching. Doing my best. Barry
You show such integrity in your work, I could watch you for hours, your voice is so relaxing.
Thank you Cheryl
So glad that you took the extra time and effort needed to remove the paint from this beautiful dresser. A natural wood finish is timeless in my opinion. Keep up the great work!
Thank you Tim. It just amazes me how the prep work takes 3 days and the final application takes an hour. Let me know if you ever have suggestions how I can continue to improve. Thank you for your support. Barry
Beautiful job! A gorgeous piece that was well worth the effort, LOVE the secret drawer. Good work as always Barry, top notch!
Thank you very much!
Barry
This guy is so humble and has such a calming voice to listen to. I’m very pleased by the end result! Good job! 👍🏻
Hi Ivan. Thank you for that feedback. Welcome to the channel! Barry
Absolutely stunning transformation!! I can imagine that it looks just as beautiful as it did when new. Great job!!!
That’s an excellent restoration!! Really beautiful work and clearly a good decision on the finish; it glows!
Thank you Jesse. Yes, that fire against the odie's made it glow
That is stunning! One of the most gorgeous pieces of furniture I have ever seen.
Wow! Thank you for this! Barry
I’m there with you Marry 😉
Beautiful. As soon as I saw it was made by Drexel, I knew it was going to be a beauty. You made it sing.
Thank you Donna! I was so glad it wasn't damaged
Unrecognizable! How could someone in good conscience paint garish paint over that stunning wood grain?!? Thank you for returning it to its beauty!
Thank you for the great comment Ann
That dresser is magnificent! As always you did a fantastic job . I'm looking forward to your new channel. Just don't overextend yourself. I also watch Angie and Jay's channels. Always a pleasant ending like yours.
Thank you Gail. I will try to do one video per week per channel. I think that will be the limit. Thank you for your support. Barry
Stunning restoration. Thank you for doing this and sharing the journey with us.
Hi Paula. Thank you for watching and for supporting the channel through your comments. Barry
wow, beautiful result. so impressed with the attitude, the pay it forward ideology, the local business support, the fireplace and listening to grandma’s record collection.
This message made me so happy. Thank you. Barry
I love your history lessons!!! I am a nerd for that stuff!!
Thank you. I hope to do more of that. Really enjoyed your collaboration with Jay at FlippingDrawers
THATS SO PRETTY!! GREAT JOB!!
Thank you!
Wow what a beautiful piece! And love the cone knob choice on the top drawers! We added that to our recent MCM makeover also 😄
Thank you! I struggled to find the right ones, but then remembered these knobs came from an amazing viewer. Barry
What a lovely piece under that hideous blue, the hidden drawer was likely for valuables and it is such an intriguing detail.
It was so much fun
I would say, that back in the day, that little hidden drawer would have been where people would put jewelry or other small valuables when they left the house for a vacation. My mom used to do the same thing, stashing anything valuable in a sock and sticking it behind a dresser drawer.
I think it is amazing
You never cease to amaze me! Gorgeous dresser! Great Job!!
Thank you Cindy. Love seeing your comments! Barry
This dresser turned out beautiful! Thank you for restoring it to its former glory
I just picked up a MSM Drexel dining table off FBMP. I hope I can restore it as well as you did with this piece. It has some veneer damage so I’ve been watching yours and Angie’s videos to learn more about the process.
Can't wait to hear how it goes! Please let me know how I can help. Barry
I'm a firm believer that life returns everything you put out there 10 fold. Tell if you put out kindness and helpfulness you'll get it back tenfold. If you put out miserable meanness you'll also get that back tenfold. I also like to live by the pay it forward motto.
This comment is one of the most meaningful for me. It certainly has returned so many amazing things, not to mention the pure joy that comes from helping others. Thank you for catching this clip at the end of my video. Barry
I can’t believe that is the same dresser! Stunning!!
Thank you, Marnelle.
Barry
Beautiful
Thank you again for your support
I like how you pay attention to the little details besides the main stuff the music you have in the background with the bird sounds just adds to the high quality of this video, perfect finishing touches not just to the dresser but also your video presentation! So impressive I hope you grow as a channel more and more ✌🏼💛
I really appreciate this comment. Thank you for sharing. Barry
What a lovely piece! You did a phenomenal restoration job on it, and I really got a kick out of the secret drawers. I had never seen anything like that before! 🌞👍
I love the wood grain & design of this dresser! Especially the secret compartment!
Me too!
How wonderful to watch you salvaging this beautiful piece! I admit that I am absolutely against painting quality furniture. It really upsets me. Thanks 😊
Hi Isabelle. So glad you feel this way and thank you for sharing and supporting the channel. Barry
Just stunning! It’s hard to beat the old, well made, quality pieces of furniture. I have to say that you truly did this one justice! I just subscribed to this channel and look forward to more of your videos.
Hi Kay! Welcome. These are the projects I enjoy the most! Thank you for watching. Barry
If you think about painted furniture and/or house hold woodwork, it often times protects the wood until someone with the talent and ambition comes along to restore the pieces to a good outcome. The reveal is so rewarding!
I have thought about that same thing. The unfortunate part is, it takes an hour or 2 to paint it and days to remove the paint. Oh well, fortunate to continue finding great pieces. And thank you for the support. Barry
That is a beautiful dresser. You definitely have an eye for seeing the beauty of a piece under all that paint.
Thank you so much
Another absolutely amazing piece! I so appreciate that you take the time and expend the effort to do each piece right! No rushing or cutting corners with your pieces! I can see where you would be friends with Jay at Flipping Drawers. You both approach and execute your restoration projects the same way. And both of you routinely turn out exquisite pieces! I can't wait to see more of your videos.
Wow. Thank you Frankie
Drexel definitely has my heart when it comes to furniture. My dad inherited a beautiful desk and I grabbed myself an end table from a junk removal job for an older lady that was otherwise going to a landfill, both of which are thankfully free of paint and in great shape. They made some fantastic and sturdy furniture over the years, and finding pieces in good shape is definitely worth the money. Well done, amazing job!
Just a bit of constructive criticism for future videos: If you have the ability with the camera you use, try to set the focus manually for some of your close up shots so that your hand movement doesn't cause it to lose focus. Otherwise You do a fantastic job and I'm glad I found your channel!
Well Said! I have been pleased with the quality of all the Drexel pieces I have found. Glad you feel the same. What I realized was, when working with gloved hands, I often bump certain settings on the camera and don't notice until it is too late. Doing my best to keep the quality top notch. Please keep giving constructive criticism in the future. To some, it may seem harsh, but I truly appreciate it. Barry
@@MadCityModern I am very glad you don't take criticism the wrong way. Thanks for responding!
Not at all. I welcome the criticism. I learn so much from my faithful viewers. Occassionaly there is a nasty comment, but those are rare
WOW!! Jaw dropping reveal! Thank you for restoring this piece to her original beauty ❤❤
Thank you for watching : ) Barry
The hidden drawer looks like a good place to store important personal documents. I love your videos.
I love how this turned out. So good! I watched a few of your other videos and bought the detail scrapers you used. Got to use them this last Saturday on a small drop leaf table I’m working on. OMG… I hated them. UNTIL… i finally got the groove. I am still working on the table but I found it more relaxing than I thought I would scraping off all the finish. Definitely enjoy that more than using a stripper or sanding. I used your link to purchase. I see a few other things I may have to purchase as well.
This makes perfect sense. I hated using the scrapers the first few times. You said it best. Once you get in a groove it can be relaxing and is actually much better than using the stripper. Thank you for sharing this
The RUclips algorithm brought me here… Your amazing work made me stay. I work as a handyman as a side business but restring old pieces is my passion. It’s so sad to see what has happened to beautifully crafted pieces. Thanks to guys and galls like you more ppl will be able to see these works of art in their former glory. Keep up the great work. You got my sub
This is one of my favorite comments. Sounds like we have a lot in common. This has also become my passion, and I want to continue to find ways to get better. Any suggestions you have along the way would be appreciated. Thanks for your support. Barry
I would say some router bits should help. :) keep up the good work… keep paying it forward. It’s a great and fulfilling way to live.
Such a lovely restoration! That blue and silver paint did it no justice! I'm not sure what I would keep in the hidden drawer, probably my grandmother's pearls.
Thank you, Joy. Great idea!
Barry
OMG, you did such an incredible job on this piece!! Beautiful work!
What resonated with me is not only the fine craftsmanship, but your kind soul and selflessness.
Paying it forward is definitely the best thing we as a people can do, period. This made me try harder in that aspect as an individual, as I have zero skill in craft.
Cheers, and have a warm holiday.
Subbed and belled! I'll keep watching.
Thank you for recognizing this! Barry
Btw, Incredible job as usual. Perfect choice!! DDEcker
Thank you. This one was special
Thank you for the music that is easy on the ears. Not hitting the mute button as I usually do.
Doing the best I can to keep the music soft. I do love having music though
You're out here doing the Lord's work 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you : )
It has a warm finish that I adore!
Love the hidden drawer! I need one now! 😄
Amazing clean up of the hardware, I had no idea it could be done without harsh chemicals! 👍
I will sub to your tool restoration channel as I find tools fascinating and have collected many different old ones.
Hi Angel. Thank you for such a detailed comment. I love this. Would love to hear about the things you have collected. Barry
Helpful hint, after boiling your hardware, drop it into cool water. That'll shock the metal and the paint will rub off real easy.
Great suggestion! I will try that on the next. Thank you for this. Barry
I like painted furniture but nothing beats the natural wood. I love the hidden drawer. I'd keep my important keepsakes and good jewelry in it.
I completely agree! Thank you for the comment
Thank you for saving that poor dresser. It is back to beautiful now.
What a labor of the love of wood,,,,,I do love the warmth of woods
Thank you! I agree!
Ficou lindo! Perfeito! Sucesso no belo trabalho!👏🏾🇧🇷
Thank you, Marise.
Barry
I’m blown away by the beauty of this brass, and the revealed wood grain underneath the paint. I love your videos, especially your attention to the details of the piece of furniture.
It is so good to see that there are left people who value natural beauty of old furniture. It is very popular to chalk paint over a beautiful old furniture and people have ruined a lot of pieces. This stuff is such a pain to remove from wood, specially oak. I hope this madness will pass soon. So... Good job! Sad that I can give only one thumbs up for what you have done here. ❤️❤️❤️
This comment made my day
Well Barry another absolutely beautiful restored piece of furniture! The hidden drawer would be a great place to put important paperwork and documents. I have viewed your friends Channel however I must confess I❤ the more complete way you to your projects. Brrrr only 40° in the garage, it's only 70 degrees here in Florida. Thanks for sharing I will check out your other channel also. Stay warm🔥.

I randomly got recommended this but even without oil those drawers look stunning, much better than the 'shabby chic' paint and horrendous hardware.
So glad it was recommended. And thank you for the feedback. Welcome to the channel. Barry
My great aunt painted a three tier solid mahogany table weathered white. When I get my hands on it I’m going to restore it to its former beauty.
Love seeing this. Thank you for the support. Barry
@@MadCityModern I do have a question for you, what would you suggest to use as a finish. I’ve been using modern clear polyurethane, but I feel like something like that should be done with an old fashioned method. I’m just not sure what finish to use on old things like that.
Stunning natural beauty! Thank you for restoring these amazing pieces of furniture.
Thank you for watching!
I am so in love with MCM furniture. I feel it is so timeless. Just beautiful work.

Beautiful restoration.... I'm all for painted furniture, but some people have to learn when to leave it be.... it was so satisfying seeing the paint being scraped off!
Hi Ed. Thank you for the feedback. I agree, scraping paint is very satisfying. Barry
So satisfying to watch that nasty paint being stripped off! The original hardware is lovely and the finished product is beautiful 😊
