  • I purchased this painted antique buffet from Facebook Marketplace. In this video I will attempt to restore, refinish, and preserve what's left of this treasure. I will strip the paint from the furniture, sand the entire piece, and apply several finishes to bring this sideboard back to life. You don't want to miss this transformation. This is one of my favorite furniture restorations.

      This seems to be the common theme. The patchwork veneer on the door. I had the same response when I peeled the paint back for the first time. I wasn't even sure if I loved it or hated it right away. Love it now. Thank you Mary. Barry

      Me too - I actually gasped! Since this was for your own personal use and pleasure, my opinion doesn't make a bit of difference, but I would probably have tried to repair the veneer with patching and touch-up. Anything, though, would have been an improvement over blue paint slathered on everything; baffles me how people think that is a good look. Love how the different tones of the wood worked together as a harmony, pleased you didn't try to make it look all one shade.

    I love how you used the walnut shells, that's a great tip! I worked in furniture restoration for a high end company for a number of years and I'll provide one tip for a piece like this that sounds harder, but can achieve much better results and allows for easier veneer repair - disassemble the cabinet. Almost always the glue had failed anyways on cabinets of this age, and taking everything apart makes working with the veneer a cinch as you're dealing with flat panels. Anyways, glad I found your channel, great work!

      Why do all these restorers use circular sanders instead of those that go back and forth? I forget what they are cslled.

    • @noexpensespentstudios
      @noexpensespentstudios 2 года назад +1

      @@phillipstephens4522 Because they're easier to use, easier to control, and more effective. The old vibrating brick type sanders are nowhere near as effective as an orbital sander. The belt sander types with an endless roll of sandpaper are too aggressive for this sort of work, fine for shaping wood, but much too aggressive for removing finish. The orbital sanders refinishers use give you so much control you can use them on even quite thin veneers if you're careful, and on very heavy finishes without fear of damaging what's underneath.

    It is so satisfying to watch you take the old paint off, restore the hardware and especially loved the way you tied in moisturizing your hands along with moisturizing the wood, inside and out. Most people I watch refinishing furniture don't often take the time to moisturize the inside of the drawers let alone the underside and the entire back of the piece. You could almost hear it sigh with relief when you stripped the blue paint off and when you applied the conditioner

    So far one of my favourites of your restorations. The results are really impressive. Well done!

    Amazing transformation! I like when a restoration keeps some of the imperfections of the piece, it shows that it’s had a life.

    This makes me feel more confident and understand how I shall take my amateur restoration of my antique furniture that desperately needs a refinish and dent fixes.

    Wow! What a transformation! I love how it’s a bit rustic and that brass and the marquetry! Wow, such fine work! I should know, I’ve been restoring furniture for years now and fully understand the tremendous work involved!

      Thank you for the feedback. I would love to hear more from you if you ever have suggestions. I have so much to learn from people like you who have restored furniture for years. Thank you! Barry

      LL 2. I have a beautiful old bedroom set that because of improper storage the veneer is peeling or broken, and the stain is badly chipped. When ever I finally turn my storage shed into a work shop I want to restore the wood. It is from the 1930's and very ornate and carved. It's a dark stain with lighter undertones. Think I will tackle the chair or ottoman first! Have not worked on furniture in many years!

    Oh my gosh, I was like, oh that'll look nice when he's done, then you revealed the finished piece and I was AGOG! It is absolutely GORGEOUS! Subscribed!

    Your attention to detail is outstanding! It's a beautiful piece, once you worked your magic! I live in Ohio, so I know what winters can be like! Could you tell me what the fine detail instruments are called! They look like dental instruments, but no clue what they're actually called. Thank you for sharing your journeys!
