- This Restoration of a Mid-Century Buffet certainly came with many frustrating challenges. The previous owner painted this furniture blue, making the removal of all the finishes very difficult; but, with every challenge, I learn new things. Follow along as I share some of the mistakes I made along the way. Thanks for all the support. Barry

This project had me frustrated many times, and I still don't feel like it is complete, but I am grateful for all the hard lessons learned along the way. Thank you for all your support! Barry
Fantastic work as always and showing you work on several projects at once
Anything spray painted frustrates me. I love the hardware. ❤ Great job.
I made a comment below that maybe the legs would look better slanted out? It’s not a criticism, just an idea🤗❤️🐝
I love the end product! Great job Barry!
Wow that turned out really, really, beautiful!!!
You are in that weird place of your skills journey. Seeing where you've been, but seeing how much further there is to go. Give yourself grace because you are more talented than you give yourself credit for. This piece is beautiful.
This means alot
👋🏼🌻🇺🇲😉👍🏻
Well said! @Betharoot! I totally agree!! That was quite the ugly duck and it no longer is. I don’t think you ever stop learning lessons and skills unless you decide to. It’s in all things raising children, crops, farm animals, flowers....fixing cars, tractors, roads, houses, furniture......always more lessons! Barry is really a wonderful, creative soul who has an enviable ability to learn. I am always impressed by that!
He is super talented. I quit refinishing painted furniture decades ago,
just couldn't deal with cleaning all the paint out of the wood. He did an
absolutely fabulous job on this furniture. Seeing some of the projects he
has done, and his skills, made me subscribe.
I love that you don't judge the original refinisher for painting it, when half way through the project you're considering throwing it out yourself. It definitely helps you understand why they decided it wasn't worth more than a coat of spray paint. 😀 But I'm glad we got to see you do a restoration. The end result is beautiful. (Personal preference - I'd swap out those handles.)
I appreciate this feedback
The walnut veneer is amazing! The legs you added instead of that awful base upgrade the piece! You had an accident with the handles but they turned out beautiful! I am so happy you can afford to edit and restore such pieces and share the process! Thanks so much for sharing
Thank you Sophia
The revealed wood grain is absolutely gorgeous. Yes, you’ve put a lot of work into this project, but it definitely shows.
Thank you
Barry, you surely made a silk purse out of a sow's ear. I'm working on a knitting project and have learned that every mistake is a learning experience. Challenges are what keeps life interesting.
After so many painted, cut up and otherwise molested pieces your project is a welcome breath of fresh air. Well done, and Thank You.
Barry you just never disappoint! Stunning piece of furniture! Thanks for another awesome video!
Thank you Nancy!
I may have cried a little... It's lovely.
Thank you
WOW. Great call removing the original base. Beautiful.
Thank you
Ooooooh that's gorgeous!
Wow,,look at that grain,,,,even a black paint and wood combo,to save it from the dump,,still has a lot of years left to be used,,,a lot of work,,be proud
Really beautiful results! You made the best possible decisions at each of those critical points when lots of people would have given up. It seemed like a project that was loaded with frustrations. I hope the other pieces you're working on will go more smoothly and profitably. That large green one looks interesting, hope its next!
Always love your comments
I spotted that green set right off! Can't hardly wait to see it.
That piece turned out just beautiful, Barry!
Thank you Rena!
That is nothing short of a miracle. So beautiful, your labor of love for your art is appreciated. Thanks for sharing.
I think it turned out beautiful!! The natural beauty of this piece is amazing!
Wow Barry the new legs are soooo much better. Goodness you sure are awesome at what you do. This was beautiful. Wowee 😍
Its just amazing to watch your work. This is one of my favorite projects that you have shared with us. Thanks for all that you share with the community.
It's beautiful, and I like the new legs much better on it.
I have that book (and the FLW). This piece came out STUNNING!
Wow Barry, beautiful as always and thanks for showing your 'mistakes" eg learning opportunities, those help us all learn along with you.
You did a wonderful job. It looks so much better. I think that the legs made the piece and your veneer patch looked good to me.
Gosh, I think it is beautiful!!
Thank you Monica
I love it, the rich walnut finish is beautiful!
Beautiful piece. I caught the picture of the Bleeding Heart plant. My favorite plant. Thank you for sharing
What a beautiful transformation 👍👍
That is an absolutely stunning piece! Ken
Bummer about the pitted hardware. The two messed up ones would have been good candidates for bondo in the pitting. Electroplating's sort of a dark art, but you can electroplate over bondo with a coat of copper paint sprayed from an airbrush. Plate in layers as needed to achieve your desired finish. The buffet looks fantastic, BTW, that Rubio stuff really does a great job.
У вас золотые руки! Класс.
Thank you
Fabulous results! You’re on your way to being an incredible refinisher. Personally, I liked the original feet. They gave a more Asian look but then I teach a form of Japanese Art. All is subjective 😊
Stunning, absolutely stunning! Wow! 🤩
You never disappoint!
Grand-tastic! Add gold to feet .2 inch up ? Those also came in blonde wash from factory. Nice
Beautiful end result!
What a beautiful finish. Great job. I think mid century sympathetic handles would finish it. I too didn't like the base those legs lift it (not just literally!) : ) 👍
I came across a brilliant way of removing paint with paint stripper. I used a stainless steel pan scourer they look like shiny balls of springy stainless steel, I just kept running it under the tap when it filled up with paint and squeezed it out and all the paint stripper comes out.
so it’s reusable for a lots of times and it get in to all the tricky spots. You my find your scraper redundant on some projects. I would still use a flat scraper on the flat surfaces though.
Ooh, it's stunning!
I think it turned out beautiful but I’m not sure about the mid century vibe with the Oriental looking hardware. 😜👍🏻👍🏻❤️
I agree
It’s gorgeous!
Simply stunning piece, love it!
Fantastic work!
Ehhh!
Beautiful ❤
As ever when you finished it looked stunning on a personal note I'm still not too sure about those handles I will be very interested if you could let me know as to when you think it was actually made I think the 1950s but again thank you for saving the piece of furniture instead of just painting it bright blue with spots on which as we know a lot of the other channels on RUclips do exactly that and I think it's horrible sometimes I know you have to basically to say furniture but when it's basically expensive wood which walnut is you did a fantastic job take care Stuart from London
Beautiful
Barry I have watched you from the beginning and I think you being a little hard on yourself…..nobody is perfect…knowledge is a powerful tool….I would look back to the beginning to remind yourself how much you have learned and grown with each project…Natalie😊 personally I love how this looks
Phenomenal job❤
I like the bright color better
Nice
The legs made all the difference. Wow. From ugly to very pretty. Nice job.
Wow.. Beautiful
I have no idea but I’ll guess Maple.
You did another great job in giving a beautiful furniture piece a second life. I think I would have used different hardware tho
Is this piece available for sale? What are the dimensions? Would you consider building an oriental base for it like the one you removed? (I love oriental furniture and I have a walnut dining table.) I live in the Milwaukee area.
I dont mind painted furniture as long as you do it right. But i really only like the darker chalkier paints or painting small things for accents. Kind of a modern way of aging it. This one just did not look good. What was with the random gold leaf 😂😂😂
It came out beautiful. I think you are being too hard on yourself!
Thank you
Please change the hardware on that piece to update it
Yes ma'am
Just freaking gorgeous! Who would have believed that such beautiful wood was hidden under all that hideous finish. Great work, Barry 😁
LLLLLOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL, I just noticed you used "freaking " !
Barry. Barry would.
@@cynthiafisher9907 Of course!
Just stunning!
Ok not going to lie I was NOT expecting the final results after watching the video and seeing the numerous frustrations for you Barry BUT WOW what a result it is absolutely beautiful far far more beautiful than I could ever have imagined it being.
You worked magic with this one Barry 🥰🤗
Thank you. This one was tricky
WOW, wow, wow the cabinet doesn't even look like the same cabinet you started with. You turned it in to a magnificent beauty! Well done Barry! Very impressive work! 😊
Thank you Pam
Absolutely beautiful Barry. I am convinced this peice was an early 50s blonde Asian influence buffet. From about 1950-54 blonde Asian style was popular along side of Tikki furniture. The handles are heavy and chunky and matched original base that seemed to anchor the peice firmly to the floor. You did an excellent job on it and what a difference the Howard's wax made in the overall beauty of the walnut.Thank you for posting love, love your work and honesty.
Love this feedback
Barry , you should be very proud of that piece! It is absolutely beautiful! What a transformation!
I love every video u make such true passion and excellent results
Thank you Jeffrey
@@MadCityModern thank u. I truly feel peaceful watching and listening to you..learn alot and appreciate your devotion with heart..
I am a coppersmith (self taught and RUclips videos). Several weeks a go a friend wanted something unique made. I normally etch but this had to be different. So, again RUclips helped. I learned how to nickel plate. Plating is very simple and the plating solution can be made with normal household items.
I look forward to learning
Greatly improved. Thank you for sharing your process with us. As a neophyte refinisher, all information is good information.
The final (as it is in this video, at least) looks wonderful and is a huge improvement over its original state. Your decision to make it taller was spot-on and really celebrates that walnut grain..
That is a surprisingly beautiful result! Maybe it wasn’t what you hoped for, but that finish and grain is gorgeous, and you kept it from the landfill! Someone will be very happy to have that in their home, thanks to you!
Oh my gosh, this is absolutely gorgeous! I think it looks so much better with the old bottom taken off, and the new likes added. I know you see things that still need to be done to it, but it is just beautiful!❤😊
wow looks really good. I am looking forward to all of your videos.
Thank you
Missed your content Barry. That piece looks so much better. To the "artist " the piece never looks complete. To the layman, it's appears as perfection.
I love this!
What an absolute stunner!! It's amazing, Barry. You are so humble and perpetually positive. It's understandable to get frustrated with pieces that require a lot of detail work. You might want to keep in mind that your viewers really enjoy watching you work through difficulties like that. Many of us learn through you. Your work is incredible and you might not give yourself enough credit.
I'm blown away by what you turned this piece into. It was a brilliant decision to remove the base and add the legs. It's gorgeous!!!
All your hard work paid off, came out beautiful!
Thank you Neil
Very good job.., magnificent result..! Greetings from Ecuador!!!
Looks incredible. I think you judge your work too harshly. Looks great just the way it is
Thank you
Pure joy watching you from start to such a beautiful finish, Barry.
Thank yoy
Barry, I love your channel, your work, and your soothing tone while educating us along the way! I've ben doing this for decades, but I arn learning from you regularly...ihave never boiled my hardware, just soaked it cold overnight
It’s beautiful! The legs look original. I’m looking forward to your next projects. Sometimes work can seem like you don’t make much headway, but there are small things that after time build up to make a big transformation! My previous work was in property management, lots of homeless cleanup. No matter the work I did, the next day there was a 97.35% 🙃 chance the mess would be back. After some frustration, I began to improve on my efficiency and worked on approaching each day as calmly as possible. It didn’t happen overnight, haha! I hope these tedious projects can provide you with positive avenues- even the ability to refrain from being overwhelmed and taking the journey bit by bit is big! Have a great week!
You do yourself down Barry. That piece is an absolute peach! Also, any profit is still profit no matter the amount. I build stuff that sometimes twould put me below minimum wage but it’s my time and it was productive rather than costing me money. It’s a win win when you monetise your hobby mate. Have a good one.
Well said. Thank you for this
It’s sad how fast you can ruin a piece of furniture and how much time it takes to save it. But you do a fantastic job as always
Well said
Hi Barry, I’m glad you stayed with this piece. I really like how you turned it into something beautiful. Joyce ❤️🙏🇺🇸
Thank you Joyce
Wow! So beautiful my friend. I am currently doing a No No, painting 3 sides of a lane cedar chest. It's not a real old one, but I think it will really please some one. Awesome piece once again Barry, well done.
No judgment. I love your approach
It looks great! Glad you discovered walnut under the blue paint and black enamel.
The mistake on the hardware was not yours, it was simply that some of them came from different batches. With regards to profitability. As long as you are profitable in the majority of your endeavors, there is nothing wrong with saving a piece from the landfill...which is what you have done here.
I really appreciate this
Master at Restoration. Magnificent, well done :)
know it was a lot of work but definitely worth it. You transformed this piece, I think it looks fabulous with all that beautiful grain exposed and those perfect legs. Well done, Barry!
Thank you Richard
Yes, Barry took the heaviness of the oriental style and gave it a form of gracefulness.
Looks pretty perfect to me. I love that you reused the hardware ❤❤❤
Barry, you’ve done great (with mistakes you’ve leaned) so far with this project❗️I really appreciate the time out you take to show us what you got around your shop. Plus the “thank yous”. I’ve used Howard’s wax as a last step on wood. That’s ok? I buffed it in.
Again thanks for sharing your wood pieces with us. 🤩😻🕊️
Thank you for this
From what I can see it turned out to be a beautiful piece of furniture Barry❤😂🎉
The sideboard is truly a piece of beauty. As your skills continue to flourish, we are also learning with you. Increasing the leg height was spot on!!
Thank you
You did an excellent job on that sideboard. It is beautiful.
Beautiful! So glad you didn’t throw this piece to the woodpile!!
I have to say with what you started with was literally a piece of garbage and what you created is absolute art very beautiful nice job
It’s a beautiful piece now that you’ve had some time with it! I have a suggestion…. I think it might look better if the legs were slanted out. They look a little too boxy maybe? Just a thought, not meant as a criticism.🤗❤️🐝
That's funny. I had the brackets for that. May still slant the legs
What you started with was horrendous. I fee that the legs go well with the oriental drawer pulls.
You always do your best. Sometimes, things don’t work out, but knowing you did your best is enough. You teach more lessons than furniture repair, and for this, I thank you.
Thank you so much
Amazing, far better than I expected. The walnut veneer is beautiful 😍
I’m not keen on this cabinet I must admit, especially the handles but you worked your magic once again Barry, nice job indeed 😊❤
Thank you
Wow. Learning experiences are fun, and, yes, call it good! It’s so wonderful to hear your thoughts and how you process the challenges you find. It’s just so practical and good modeling. Beautiful piece!
Barry, highly respectable job, the piece looks very nice!
Barry, you done good son! I was thinking it was elm. That wax finish is super nice.
Thank you so much
It's gorgeous Barry. That hardware incident is well covered too. Interested in hearing how the feed and wax gets on with the rubio
