I also found that I could not get back to what I considered my normal weight of 107 lbs - 110 lbs. Yea when I think about McDonald’s I think about happy memories in the playground and just enjoying burgers and fries and having McDonald’s once in a blue moon. It’s hard to believe people actually like to buy McDonald’s every single day. So bad for your health
That's how it's like here in Norway, bringing the kids out to eat some hamburgers or pizza very rarely, at special occasions. Homemade food is still the dominant (and better tasting) option, and I don't see the kind of obesity here that I see for example in videos that show average people in USA, where obese people seem to be almost the norm, instead of the extreme. American "junk food" is available here, but more popular is Italian and the focus on quality raw materials and really tasty food instead of just sugar and fat.
Growing up, fast food was a luxury. We only had it once in a while if my parents had extra money. At that time, I desperately wished we could eat fast food often , but now I am so thankful that we didn’t have eat it too much. Home cooked meals will keep you at a decent weight and you nourish your body with real food !
Same. Going to McDonalds was a special occasion. Fast food was quite expensive when I grew up (in Europe). Still isn't cheap enough to eat everyday, but it used to have the price of a regular restaurant meal, while not being as filling. Which made people rather go to a normal restaurant instead.

Same, I've NEVER been taken to McDonald's as a kid. Meanwhile my classmates would talk about it and bring their happymeal toys to school. Birthday parties at McDonald's were the standard. I really felt like when I went to the swimming pool with my classmates, I was letting them down that it wasn't McDonald's.. it's weird how something like that became a staple in life. But in retrospect, I'm happy I wasn't raised on it either. So I feel you
I feel the same way. My parents saw Supersize Me and wouldn't let my siblings and I eat anymore Mcdonalds. My mom did a lot of internet research on health hazards and we had a lot of restrictions. Some of it was a little obsessive, but she wasn't too strict about it at least.

I really dislike people that claim that they become overweight because healthy food is too expensive. For example eating those cheap cornflakes that are literally glazed in sugar so they at least taste good instead of the more expensive but healthier full corn cornflakes with fruits, berrys, nuts and fresh fruits. But seriously. If I could I would start everyday with some orange juice and Müsli. More delicious than all the cornflakes that exists.
It once was too expensive in America, back in the 70s. Don't worry friend, the prices will come down soon enough so all of Africa can suffer the same fat(e) as America.

I love that my parents made the effort to cook and to teach us how to cook. You save hundreds of dollars each and every meal and the quality is superb. That statement about, "From no food to bad food" is so true. And it's a shame coz you can't necessarily price fast food up. So ultimately it'll always be a cheap go to option for people who are poor or simultaneously across the demographics when you want a quick meal. Coz even for me before I started eating a lot healthier I found myself eating fast food a lot because of lifestyle, where I'd just be too busy to care about cooking coz I'd come home late from work and so it was easy to just grab fast food be it a cheap meal or a more expensive meal. But eventually I started eating a lot healthier and doing even meal preps to stop myself from getting into that habit of coming home late from work and just going for fast food rather than warming up a meal from prep. It's gonna be one of those things that I don't think we'll ever get under control necessarily coz even with the whole healthy choice movements some people aren't fortunate enough and have other things to worry about that may then lend to unhealthy eating habits. Hopefully though it eventually goes back into what it originally was of being like a special occasion sort of thing and not a "imma eat this every other day" kinda thing 🙏🏿❤️

But later on I acknowledged things like the nutrition in fast foods and the general ideas of processed foods, I rarely visit fast food places.
The truth is if you eat at an international fast food brand anywhere in the world the hygiene standard is high, doesn't mean perfect but the standard is known especially for any tourist. Nutrition on the other hand is variable and tends to be as bad as the national government of a particular country allows. In the wealthy world it seems the US has the lowest standard.

I agree. But sometimes it is the other way round. My daughter who is just 12, wants things or want to do things that I beleive she is too young for or that it is not safe for her. So far I am managing to convince her but when she looks at her friends, she finds their lifestyle more appealing. Lets just take the example of a smart phone. I dont beleive that a 12yr should have one. It is not only safe but she doesnt even need it at this age. Our children are becoming like adults at 12. When I discuss with her friends parents - those that are sensible - tell me that they are losing control over their kids. One of the reason is the new laws - schools are asking children if their parents are mean with them, spank them (of course I am against abusif parents but ffs a slap is not abusive) and so on.. when children see that society is with them, they rule their parents. Some adults are messed up in the head and some, genuine ones, are losing control and they are not at fault. Basically, we are builing a VERY f**ked up society for our children

Go for it! Fastfood should be a luxury if people ever eat it. Water, tea and coffee, or fruit flavoured water are sufficient, and fresh local food is the best, you support your local farmers, and apparently eating local food helps prevent allergies from local illnesses/insect bites etc. It's a conspiracy theory too that governments want people to be fat and ill so they go to the hospital and become lifelong dependent on medication to keep that circle going. It's sickening to think about. Stick to healthy local food, eat what your grandparents would eat, and those before them.

While the US has gone through a phase where everyone got fat, I have noticed a trend of fitness being cool with the younger generation. Eating is still an issue, and schools should emphasize more on teaching nutrition and proper eating along with teaching how to manage your finances, investments, and general finances. I think this would help the upcoming generations so much.
We're in the middle of a cultural transition. Food culture evolves more slowly than technology. We have cuisine developed with the assumption of long hard working days that require densely caloric food. And we have cultures based on the idea that food is scarce because until recently it was. Fast food companies and other restaurants have commercialized that cuisine and made it readily accessible, but really it's a reflection of what people would be preparing in their homes anyway. It's going to take a while for the cultural change to happen.
We'll only know in many years if that trend reverses the obesity trend in the US or ends up creating new addictions. I'm afraid you are over-optimistic or guilty of giving too much importance to a few outliers. Very few countries in the world have been able to reverse obesity - Denmark, South Korea - only with strong political intervention that is non-existent in much of the world.

A main factor is asymmetrical information. Parents don't get properly informed (by the government and the companies) about health issues that can be caused by excessive consumption of sugar, fat and saturated fatty acids as well as salt. So the government might be the one to blame

Because at some point losing weight naturally just isn't possible anymore or it immediately dangers the persons health. Btw, the surgery still means you need to eat healthy and exercise otherwise you won't lose any weight. It just helps getting it off. It's sad, but in some cases it is necessary

We never had fizzy drinks as kids and going to McDonald’s or Pizza Hut was a birthday treat. I guess that’s why we aren’t fat. I worry about kids today
Growing up we were only allowed to have a can of soda on Friday night with our treat of a takeout pizza. Every other day of the week was focused on healthy cooking. Now when life is busy, you can get a burger for $1 without even getting out of your car. Makes it much harder to say no for today's overworked families. :(
Right! When did it go from being a treat to being part of people's everyday diet? Sadly even the salads at fast food restaurants aren't really that healthy
@Asherah 1147 we must have good parents. I Can’t imagine giving a baby coke it’s tantamount to child abuse. The kids I teach go to McDonald’s 3-4 times a week as a ‘treat’ Then they expect us to teach them when they’re full of sugar. Poor kids.

I love that my parents made the effort to cook and to teach us how to cook. You save hundreds of dollars each and every meal and the quality is superb. Much better than anything offered in fast food restaurants. It's quite expensive when you consider the nutritional content and how long it actually fills you up, which isn't that much. @@Legend1148 Even fast food staples like burgers are cheaper if you make it yourself when you factor in all the costs. At Mcdonalds, you only have to pay like 3-5 dollars for a burger. But how much meat do you really get? It's paper thin and the size of a small CD. Not much value. Making burgers at home means it's actually made of meat, it's bigger quantities, and you don't waste gas going to the fast food place. You can stay home and enjoy a good restaurant quality burger for half the cost and get double the quantity. Not a bad deal

I'm from a developing country and this is how I used to think about fast food 18:03 since they usually have their stores located at populated shopping malls, also with half opened kitchens so they seemed clean to me and this became the main reason why I preferred chain fast foods over a lot of other local restaurants. The truth is if you eat at an international fast food brand anywhere in the world the hygiene standard is high, doesn't mean perfect but the standard is known especially for any tourist.
