  • The rich in Germany been never been as well-off as they are today and assets have never been so unevenly distributed. But who are they? How do they live? And what do they think of their country? A journey into the discreet world of the super-rich.
One percent of Germans own over a quarter of the country's assets, whilst half of the country’s citizens have no assets at all. But while the German media report on the growing poverty in the country on a daily basis, little is known about the super-rich. They keep a very low profile and can walk the streets unrecognized. "Manager Magazin” says there were around 200 billionaires living in Germany in 2018, and their numbers are increasing. The documentary "Top of the World" asks why rich Germans are so unwilling to talk about their wealth. Its author immerses himself in the discreet world of big money and meets financial advisors with 800 years of family tradition behind them and billionaires such as drugstore king Dirk Rossmann and mail-order company heir Michael Otto - as well as self-made businessmen such as Rainer Schaller. They talk about their notions of money and justice, the origins of their wealth and their fear of social envy.

Never judge people by their money. I had a good friend at school who's father used to pick him up with some fancy car like a Ferrari because they owned a company. The struggle began when his parents were divorced, he and his little brother suffered a lot. He started drinking in school at 11th grade. His mother died in a car accident, he himself in a motorcycle crash. I'll never forget when he said "Most people have no idea what's going on. You may see it when people are rich, you see the cars or the house but their real problems are mostly invisible, just like in any other family."

I went to boarding school with children of the rich. We socialized with kids at other boarding schools. My father flew for an airline in the Middle East. I was forced to go to boarding school as there were no schools after 9th grade. I was definitely the poor girl in school, lol. I received a great education. I learned how to speak properly. I didn’t know what a double negative was prior to my boarding school. Typically, we graduated in the top 1% in English. There is a definite difference in old money and new money. You’d never know your standing next to old money, but new money flaunts it. Heck, old money kids used duck tape on their dockside’s. One thing I can say is they always made me feel welcome in their homes. They don’t live in reality as kids. It’s just not normal to get a Beach house for your 16th birthday, but for them it is.

He is retired now, and there are no existing photos of him in the last 20 years. The newspaper doesn't write about him, because he wants to live a decent life. His house is in an area where the "upper class" of our city lives - many beautiful old houses, some very decent, some more luxurious, many "normal" houses for one family and even some houses with more apartments for people of all incomes. He has build a new campus with a special college/university where the students are part time in a company (Lidl/Kaufland) and part time at the college. He does much for our city, without telling everyone. Very likeable 😊

I have a friend who is extremely rich. He never mentions it and as far as I know, his "fun time" is going to restaurants and playing 50 Euros on MMA every 2 weeks. He has told me he takes out exactly what he needs to be comfortable in his 200 m2 house and talks to everyone in the community with respect and kindness.
As I understand it, the only thing he wants is to expand the company and help friends where he can. He also doesn't want many people to know (even if they do). No boats, cars or women that I know of. Don't think he has even taken a holiday in a couple of years.

I've always appreciated as an American how the ultra rich in other countries are much different than the ultra wealthy in the US. However there are alot of wealthy people in the US like this as well - just bc u see things on tv or in movies doesn't mean it's true for all, but I do think we have our priorities messed up in the US and the flaunting of wealth gets a lot of attention i.e. the kardashians.
Having debt taught me I don't like it and I stopped living outside my means and worked hard to pay off debts and now I am different than I used to be, but it's certainly hard.
I was actually just at a fancy wedding last night and thought to myself what is the point to all this , unless u are the immediate family or in the wedding party all weddings are the same. But people have fancy wedding to flaunt wealth and I find that sad.

What these ppl fear is, that the public at large is more aware of the gigantic wealth discrepancy between normal folks and them.
In the next economic crisis, where ppl will lose their jobs again, become poor etc. while their bosses make even more money by outsourcing their jobs and similar things - this general information could spawn "dangerous" ideas.

The most amazing wealthy people are, the one's who do what they do with complete discretion & respect. Where all's done in silence and they're actually happy to do it, from the core of their heart. They expect no attention, accolades, nothing in return. They don't demand to be centre stage. This reminds me....There's an Indian woman (name forgotten unfort), who was labelled as one of India's "untouchables", from the poorer & lower caste. She alone, managed to go from true rags to riches & proved India and all her critics wrong. She literally, rose to the top & shone, alone. Obviously she now has her team assisting her, but her initial sheer hard work, that was all hers to own & take credit for. The best thing about her....She's never, ever forgotten her roots, where she hailed from, so she regularly visits her village and takes excellent care of all the countless villagers. She provides free eye checks & required glasses, free medical checks/blood pressure checks, free maternal care, free food & plenty of it, plus her wonderful, optimistic, fun loving & caring company. All the villagers so await her visits & they truly love/appreciate her & all she does for them. They look to her as their living Angel. She expects nothing in return, but to do some good for those she cares about. She knows their plight, for she once walked within their shoes & rode the waves with them. She's a millionaire, but you'd never know. Her office is simple & her surroundings, nil pretentious, arrogant, etc;. Some may say...."Well, she's very wealthy, therefore, she's a moral obligation if anything, toward the poor in her country, her village. Well, she's certainly not obligated to do anything, as many rich people don't, but here's the thing....She chooses to, actually wants to & she feels good about it, happy to do so. This is reflected, in her generally happy demeanour, her sheer optimism & zest in life." There are many like this woman, both in India's wealthiest circles and around the world. To those who are interested to see her in action, please check out the interesting documentary called......"Money, luxury & fame. The new super rich in India." It's also a DW documentary.

      It's not a 120K electrical Jaguar, it's 'the car'
      It's not a € 2,3 million mansion, it's your house.
That's also why most sponsorships and donations are done from companies. It's not just for tax reasons, but also because it's easier to say "This company has donated € 1000 to charity" than to say "This guy donated € 1000 to charity".
Stamping your company logo on the van of the 'food bank' who gives leftover food to people on benefits is considered acceptable. Asking them to put your name or photo up there is considered obscene.

The richer you get, the more you'll realize that it's not what you've seen in movies or on instagram. Status signaling becomes decreasingly important. Fancy clothes, supercars on a lease, expensive watches... That's all made for people trying to look rich (who more often than not aren't rich or typically won't stay for long). You become rich by acquiring assets, not liabilities. If you really are wealthy though, why bother showing anyone? Money speaks and wealth whispers. It's better to be rich and anonymous than poor and famous.

The nouveau riche Chinese clearly flaunt their money...and definitely do not follow what you stated above. In Toronto right now, there is so much flaunting of wealth that it becomes disgusting. Decades ago, hardly anyone drove luxury vehicles. These days, the streets are absolutely full of them. It used to be that wealth was not supposed to be flaunted. That rule has been completely thrown out the window these days, in my opinion.

One of the greatest value of being rich is that you can choose the people around you. As your parents could if they were rich too. So you get better advice than the rest might get. And keep the most comfortable company for being comfortable yourself. Why spoil that by going public (and have your head chopped off if worst comes to worse). A lot of life energy gets lost by dealing, not been able to avoid the wrong kind.

As a German I agree and understand that 'staying under the radar, quiet' menality these people have. It makes them kinda more normal looking and sympatic than those
showing, spending (or better wasting) their money/whelth in all kinds of media and situations given to them. That could maybe called 'Rapper-style' in one or another way cause of the
stereotype of spending lots of money on costy 'bling bling' stuff that is mostly not even needed in basic. Just for making a show-off to let the normal seen they 'have and can' buy whatever
theiy want. :) In fact it's just simply senceless spending of money for profiling and standout from the rest. It clearly depends on the own character ect. a person have build in lifetime.

I‘ve lived many years in Germany (and many other countries). What I liked in Germany is this attitude that it is considered as bad to show your money in public. Also, the different classes mix more than in other countries. In Germany, it‘s still ok to go to a cheap Pizzeria for dinner, even if you are a millionaire/billionaire, This would be impossible in Latin America (maybe with exception of Argentina), Africa, or Asia. You will find this phenomenon only in Northern Europe, and maybe also Canada / New Zealand.

It is considered rude in Germany, to flaunt wealth or even talk about money, especially with people you dont know very well. A classy rich person will not talk about their wealth.

if you think about Germany's history of colonization and the third reich, you'll find some of the top riches there, their fortune was passed from one generation to the next. Nobody of them wants to talk about blood money.
