This worked even better than I expected! The previous pipes had deep grooves and heavy rust. I thought it was near permanent. But less than a minute of heat and a handful of whacks and it slid right off!
The idea of using the clamp is good - i had 2 so i put one on either side of the joint, put the car's jack between them and opened it up. Forced the pipes apart with no heat or hammering!
Thankyou Thankyou and Thankyou Again….. It’s Folks - Just Like YOU….Who Make RUclips….A Real Blessing to Watch!!!!! I really was wondering “how” to get them apart….NOT NO LONGER !!!!!
Always enjoy viewing your work. Much better idea than trying to cut relief slits in the pipe and risking going through and damaging the front section of the exhaust.
Thanks for this, I’m having to modify and replace parts of the 4 inch exhaust on my 7.3 Excursion and this will definitely save me some frustration. Thank you again!
Hey Bruddah, not sure if you remember me talking about weird front end chatter noise when I drove over rough road patches... Anyhow, I changed out end links and had checked out all bushings, ball joints, struts and both control arms in case they were cracked. Didn't find the problem. What I did was swap the strut cartridge left to right and right to left. The strut assy's themselves were different so i couldn't just swap the whole assembly. Swapping the cartridges was the only "rick, think outta the box" method I had left. I found that the right cartridge was leaking internally when I ran over rough roads. The noise went from the right side over to the left. I bought a new cartridge for both sides, only spent $165 total. Saved about $700 since I didn't "throw unnecessary parts" at the truck. Thanks Bruddah for all you do for us - You Rock!!
Thank you thank thank you!!!You just saved me big time. I’ve got a 2013 Ford Taurus that the flex pipe has a crack in I decided to tackle this myself I’m not so sure it was that smart at 60 years old and only having it up on ramps. I was able to get the four bolts on the front two flanges off. One of those threads is kind of screwed up now hoping I can still make it work. Got to the back pipe where it connects into the resonator and I killed myself trying to get that thing loose using pipe wrench to try to twist it. Then I saw your video and went to the store and bought that clamp heated it up and beat that pipe off there!! 70° right now but it’s gonna rain and temperatures are gonna drop to 28 with 20 miles hour winds in the morning. I’m attempting to get this put back together today.
thank you, i have recently taken a job in a transmission repair shop, OLD DUDE. 30 yrs plus in heavy equipment new to auto. the exhaust is kickin my ass.. need the low down guys. the answer im looking for is concise? as in im a exhaust dude and this is what do it works for me
Map torch huh? I'll really have to look into one, I currently have no form of heat currently. I really liked the auto start / lighter function. Can't wait to see the new updates of the new shop!
Yep, very useful video. Anyone who has tried to disassemble a decade or more old clamped exhaust system is is identifiable by the scars on their knuckles. Lol When this was required on the Mercedes I found all bolted, flanged connections with copper (I think) fasteners. Not having to fight, I looked at my scarred knuckles and was like why doesnt Ford, Dodge..? Then I realized, the expense of welded flanges that somehow dont rust out, copper alloy fasteners, a donut type gasket. Lots of pros, but I guess that adds expense, maybe in weight too. The only con: you cant make videos showing cool tricks to take apart. Did need special tool for the rubber hanger mounts to not destroy the old or new, no wiggle room. Thanks for the upload.
Realize this is very old, but helpful tip using a cutoff to make slits if you don't intend to reuse the pipe, start at the left side in this video and work toward the front edge. you can stop short and pry open with a cold chisel and hammer the rest of the way. This way if you did cut too deep and compromise the inside pipe, the new pipe is going to cover right over it. Usually if I try to undo those bolts I end up twisting the bolt right off.
Hi Brian - Thanks for making this video it's going to make it so easy to remove a exhaust pipe which I believe it or not I will be doing next week as I ordered a new muffler / flex pipe from Rock Auto - keep on making your videos -
Thanks for this, gotta do a DPF 2moro and its joined in the middle the same as this. Last time i tackled one like this, used a cut off wheel, ended up cutting through both, and then welded the inner one up, grinded it down, slotted new one over the top.
Getting ready to start replacing drivers side exhaust manifold, have passenger side done, wiring and starter fixed, hopefully I can get it done with less hassle as the passenger side, 97f-1504x4,my friend at the parts store ask me if he has to pull the engine to replace his manifolds on the 4.6, I told him not if he knows how to weld,ha.
I'm trying to separate the exhaust manifold pipe from the cat tube sleeve on a 1986 F150 300 4.9L I6 with not much room, and this never even occurred to me. Thanks brother!
Is it safe to spray penetrating oil on rusted exhaust bolts and let it soak overnight? then use a impact socket to remove it? I need to change the electric rack opinion on a 2013 Ford Flex
I cut slots in the pipe on my 3" jba catback ss tailpipe, used my map torch and beat the hell out of an exhaust clamp but I can't get it to budge. It's only a few years old
Dont have a ford but this sounds very helpful! Sadly, the slip joint i need to remove has turns on either end so its much harder. Plus i need to lift the joint off!
I heated, I beated... All I managed to do was separate the muffler pipe stub from the muffler. Tailpipe connection did not budge. Now I need a new muffler too.
I just bought a 2017 Ford Focus SE 2 liter. Is there anything I should look out for. I love the car so far. I broke it in like the manual said. I hope it lasts me a long time. I bought the car at gene latta in Hanover Pennsylvania. Very good dealership and highly recommend to anyone near the Hanover area. My old focus lasted me a very long time trouble free hopefully my new focus lasts me a long time too. Your videos are great! Keep up the good work! Ps. This is my first new car!
Another Great Video. Thx Bruddah!! Darn good idea. I had almost always used grinder. I've also had good luck with a muffler chisel. But not doing it carefully and right yeilds new pipe where I initially didn't plan for. Your way works better. Btw, UR right as always, MAP Gas is the best. It burns hotter, cleaner and in the sabes you money cuz it's faster. It is for me. Mahalo's Bro
jtn gute that's a good idea, but I wonder if it would damage an O2S of used upstream of one? I think I'm going to look into that. That's a good idea you have.... making it easier on yourself in the future if you ever had to separate the Union again.
If this is a regular thing for you, invest in an oxy/acetylene torch. The propane torch takes so long to heat the entire pipe that the carpet will start smoking. Hit it with a cutting tip sans oxy boost and you can heat up just the part of the pipe the clamp had deformed. Either way... watch that carpet!!
When I was 18 yrs. old, I applied for an entry level job at an auto shop. The first job they had me perform was the removing the muffler pipe U Clamps. I ended up rounding off the nut while trying to remove it with an air rachet they provided. They fired me instantly. Now I see seasoned mechanics having the same problem, and it pisses me off knowing these pricks were setting me up for failure. 😠
Hello I have question have nothing to do we this video, but I change the starter on my 2000 Ford focus , now the cluster or mph go full to 120 and go back on possition, since I change starter never happen before, what can cause that? By the way the car was only 2 days we battery disconected. Any tips to look around!

FordTechMakuloco Thanks for the tips that torch is easier to use
MAPP, for MethylAcetylene-Propadiene Propane. But I just use my oxy-acetylene rig.
Hi what model is the 1/2 " Milwaukee please?
Thank you so much I struggle for three hours trying to get the muffler off my jeep using your technique it finally came off thank you so much
Good stuff. Thanks!
Dude, you have saved my life. I've been trying to remove my exhaust for 5 hours and I finally got it because of this. Thank you
Congrats, stuck components are nightmares
@@peekguyy3194 I'm going through this nightmare right now. I have a torch but the angle is so bad that it's really hard to work with. (Not on a lift.)
Love that life saver feeling when you’ve tortured yourself for hours, and then look up a good video 😅
This worked even better than I expected! The previous pipes had deep grooves and heavy rust. I thought it was near permanent. But less than a minute of heat and a handful of whacks and it slid right off!
Legend

Do you have a picture to illustrate? Not sure what you mean.
Here comes the point of youtube.
Great trick, thanks buddy!
This is gonna make what I have to do a lot easier. Mine is a Corvette but the principal idea works for any car. Thanks a ton.
Thankyou Thankyou and Thankyou Again…..
It’s Folks -
Just Like YOU….Who Make RUclips….A Real Blessing to Watch!!!!!
I really was wondering “how” to get them apart….NOT NO LONGER !!!!!
Using that old clamp as a place to hammer on is such a life saver.
Always enjoy viewing your work. Much better idea than trying to cut relief slits in the pipe and risking going through and damaging the front section of the exhaust.
Brilliant advise, been struggling for hours and then got it off in minutes 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you! I was convinced my exhaust was permanently stuck but I got it off thanks to this video!
i love these short, helpful vids on everyday problems every shade-tree mechanic encounters.
More vids of this type, please!
using the clamp as an anvil is a very good idea!! I wished i had your patience!!! thank you for the tip and thinking outside the box!
Thanks for this video, I had to do this this last weekend. Started with propane but was taking forever so I tried the mapp gas and worked flawlessly.
Thank you so much I struggle for three hours trying to get the muffler off my jeep using your technique it finally came off thank you so much
Great use of the old clamp and a tidy damage free removal of the old pipe! Looking forward to seeing what's new on the channel. Thanks!
good tip, may your next few wacks be swift and powerful
Thanks for this, I’m having to modify and replace parts of the 4 inch exhaust on my 7.3 Excursion and this will definitely save me some frustration. Thank you again!

I gave up on this until I saw your video! Thank you for taking me to think "outside the box" Thanks again

Excellent trick with the old clamp!

never thought of pounding on the clamp! thanks
Pure gold. Thank you!

Already been using the torch, but Good idea using the clamp this should help me a lot.
Great video. Thanks for the suggestion about MAP gas and showing how to do this.
Excellent tip thankyou for the great videos I learn a lot from them

I have a very old metro exhaust giving me grief, hoiefully this will solve it tonight! That u clamp idea is genius!
Thanks for the tip about using Mapp gas. Money is tight and I don’t have a few hundred dollars to buy a small oxy/acetylene torch.
Hi Brian - Thanks for making this video it's going to make it so easy to remove a exhaust pipe

Worked like a shot - Thanks!
Great tip, thanks a lots. Saved me time and money.
Massive help thanks so much
Using this method for my backhoe exhaust. thank you
THANKS! Worked like a charm!
Excellent. Heat is the answer.
I'm back!thanks again I was struggling!
Awesome. Thanks bro. Appreciate you!
Nice work...I love MAPP gas, it's the way to go...Especially for plumbing jobs. Propane is for hot dogs and hamburgers.
LOL Hot dogs
They reformulated map gas years ago, its btu output is not much hotter than LP. Oxy ftw
You're the man! Thank you! Saved my life!
THANKS. It was wonderful to get the pipe off.
How about a video on how to collapse and remove pipe from inside pipe you have good reason to save? That would be interesting stuff.
This worked for me. I had less space but still worked.
Used the cutting wheel. Alot quicker and alot easier in my opinion.
Thank you! This is gonna really be helpful!
I never seen map gas in a small canister bottle like that only propane ,where can I find one like that?
Another great tip! Love your channel man, keep it up!
I'm trying to separate the exhaust manifold pipe from the cat tube sleeve on a 1986 F150 300 4.9L I6 with not much room, and this never even occurred to me. Thanks brother!

Those clamps may not come off after a winter or two here. Guess you can always use a new clamp. But it was a great tip!
Dont have a ford but this sounds very helpful! Sadly, the slip joint i need to remove has turns on either end so its much harder. Plus i need to lift the joint off!
Thank you so much for sharing this! Great trick!
Great video thanks
Great tip with the clamp that would make it sure easier
I watched one of your videos before about oxygen sensors. How do you know which one is number one? What side? I got a 4.6 2009 f150
Great help thanks
Thanks for the video, big help for me. I can put my sawzall down !👍
After days of wrestling, this worked. Thank you.
Nice video, great tip thank you. (UK)
Let's go try this out
Thank you, I will remember that 👍
I love your vids. Thanks!!!
Good idea. An old dog just learned a new trick. Thanks
Great tip, beats a T chisel any day.
Nice trick, thanks.
Great idea that!
Thank you so freaking muchhhhhh
Good video
Thanks for the tip!

Victor Dunkle shit i live close to there. Weird seeing someone local on youtube.
Great Tip!
Could you just run the truck for a while to get it got then hit the clamp instead of using a torch
Another Great Video. Thx Bruddah!!

Mahalo's Bro
Exellent tip😊
Is it easier to put it back on
Great idea, and video!!
Can hitting the flange with a hammer damage a catalytic converter or the manifolds ? Or is it safe to go to town on it with a hammer
Tried to get my cat off for well over a couple hours. Read this comments and looks like this should do the trick...going to have to give this a shot
on assembly new pipe, what do you think about applying the nickel type, never-seez for possible easier removal the next time??
jtn gute that's a good idea, but I wonder if it would damage an O2S of used upstream of one? I think I'm going to look into that. That's a good idea you have.... making it easier on yourself in the future if you ever had to separate the Union again.
TheCoatneyadkins oh.... downstream of the O2 sensor.
TheCoatneyadkins for sure.... on the bolts / nuts. Any heated bolts /nuts, I use never-seez. Always
Fabulous!
Thanks bro
I like your idea 🤗🤗
+1 life saved. 👍👍👍
thank you!

@FordTechMakuloco then I'm left to think you don't know what you're missing out on.
Nope I seen what they can do as we had a full size setup at my dealership.
When I was 18 yrs. old, I applied for an entry level job at an auto shop. The first job they had me perform was the removing the muffler pipe U Clamps. Sounds like they did you a big favour. Tossers.
new garage?? I am saying yes lol. congrats
Awesome but you started the death of that pipe at 6:25 .. your aim is shocking. Skills are spot on though. 💪
Yes that pip was getting replaced as part of a cat back install.
Still enjoy your vids. One of the only subscriptions i still keep. How satisfied are you with the Milwaukee battery tools?
