Thank you for this video!!! I had No Idea Rhino High Fidelity did this album! I just ordered it. I have the Rhino High Fidelity of their debut album and that is Unbelievable! I’ve been waiting for them to do a Good rock album on their High Fidelity series, ever since I got that one. So I jumped all over this one. 👍
Very nice video, just subscribed. I have the first Rhino Cars and love it so just ordered the Candy-O based on your recommendation. And yes, I will turn it up. Look forward to your review of American Beauty, which I have also ordered.
I just ordered this 2 min ago after watching your video. I have all the Cars albums on vinyl. Candy-O to me sounds better than the first album on my old originals that I bought all those years ago. MoFi has Candy-O listed as awaiting repress. However, they do still have the first album and I'm going to order it from them.
I've always slightly preferred Candy-O to their first album. The tracks on that first album just got played to death on FM radio (and everywhere else seemingly) which probably has a lot to do with it. People like to crap on those Mo-Fi Cars pressings but I think they all sound pretty good, and better than the originals which also sounded good to begin with. Don't hesitate in picking them up if you can get them at a decent price.
Yeah they were played to death because they were Awesome! One of the best debut albums in rock history. Side 2 never gets old. Anyway My reply was in reference to the Sound of the debut Rhino High Fidelity pressing. Absolutely amazing.
My copy had several skips during the first two tracks. Rhino sent me a replacement, but that one also skipped through the first two songs. Cleaning the discs didn't help. Played it on my friend's turntable and although it didn't skip, there were very loud pops were the skips were.
I currently own 4 copies of Candy-O. A first press US, no sticker or text, a US second press with sticker, a third US press with printed text, and the 2017 Ric Okasek supervised deluxe (ADA) reissue. So, I’m anxious to get my Rhino HiFi version next week and give it a spin. That said, I always thought the OG pressings sounded great, if you just turned the bass contour knob up a smidge.
Completely agreed, the word for this pressing is "BALANCED"! Cars on the FM, cassettes, and cd's for me were always very backbeat forward and so far KG mastering on this and the self titled places the vocals and instrumentation (respectively) in perfect balance with one another...it just sounds more cohesive than what I grew up with. Also agreed - you cannot play this pressing quietly, total hurricane of a pressing! Great review & enjoy your personal notes!
Also, an interesting decision by Rhino to add the band name and album title to the cover in the upper left corner. The original pressing jackets, like mine, were unnamed except for on the spine. If I remember correctly there was an clear sticker on the outside of the shrink-wrap on the original release that had the band name and album title on it that looked very similar to Rhino what has done on their new jacket.
Interesting comparison! Oddly enough a local friend reported back to me he suspected the Rhino Candy-O sounds borderline bright and bass-shy which is not far from what you are saying - except for it being a matter of degree. Clearly you are listening through two different systems and have your own set of biases. His system could be bass-shy and a bit more neutral than yours and yours might be more full-range and more forgiving on top which could explain why you think it is more "perfectly balanced" sounding. I have not had an opportunity to hear this Rhino yet but I do remember a similar bright-ish sonic signature on the first The Cars/The Cars Rhino High Fidelity edition which was not to my liking. I felt the Nautilus Recordings edition was far better. My buddy will be visiting me this coming week and will be bringing his Rhino/Candy-O to shootout against my Nautilus Recordings/Candy-O and perhaps a couple of other pressings which may include the MOFI edition. So this will be fun. Cheers! Oz LTBS P.S. UPDATE: My friend will be bringing both the MOFI edition as well as a mint OG.
@@MikesVinylExperience The shootout went down and the three members of the listening panel (myself included) much preferred the MOFI edition. We found the Rhino too thin and bright. In some ways the OG was also preferable for its musicality. I don't know if you know fellow RUclipsr Scott Wilson of @ThePressingMatters and go check out his Candy-O video that went live a couple of hours ago. He even provides HQ digital rips of two of the songs ("Let's Go" and "It's All I Can Do") for download so people can hear for themselves what's what. Who knows? Many might still choose the Rhino and this will be highly dependent of everyone's hearing as well as how their systems are tuned. Cheers!
1.) Hopefully you took advantage of the settlement and sent all your shitty sounding Mo-Fi's (you know, the ones that you thought originally sounded great) for your money back 2.) Find a good therapist and maybe someday you'll be able to overcome being "lied to" by that nasty, evil record company. Good luck, buddy!
Waiting eagerly for my copy from Rhino, but enjoyed your review. The series from Rhino so far has been impressive in the total presentation - and in what matters most - the sound. Can’t wait to crank this up!!! Thanks for the review, Mike!
Being given #4203 on a very first day order is sad. I can guarantee you that the knuckle-draggin' goobers at the Rhino warehouse aren't paying any attention to matching up numbered copies of these releases to when the orders actually came in. More like last numbered copy in (#5000) is the first one out. With Rhino consider yourself lucky to even get yours. I ordered Candy-O at 8:00 a.m. of day one and I still don't have mine.
I have thought about playing the albums but I would want to invest in proper equipment to record it and then jump through whatever hoops you would need to do to get rights to do that. The latter being the most difficult i would guess.
My mom skipped school to purchase this record. I still have her copy, but naturally it’s pretty beat up. Wanted a new copy & I love Rhino + wanted to try their new hf series. Personally I thought this remaster lost practically all of its musicality that the original master has. I start moving without realizing it in my listening chair on the original. Kevin Gray remaster loses all of that engagement. It’s impressive the detail that is portrayed in the upper end. There’s a lot of space & separation, backup vocals sound excellent, & the stereo imagine is great. But this is a dance album. I’m not looking for all that in this album. Also on original pressings, the song “shoo be Doo”, (the song that kicks the record off into the heavy dance album that it becomes) gets loud & suspenseful. On the rhino remaster, Shoo be Doo & Candy-O seem to dip by 7db. It’s a giant buzz kill & super disengaging. I was very let down by this remaster
Ronald, thank you for your comment and thoughts on the album. For sure this type of remaster will not apeal to everyone. And I do agree with you that some of the original (haze is what I call it) sound is very different on a audiophile remaster. For example, I purchased a remasted copy of Donna Summer Bad Girls and compared that to my original and the original was sooo much better. I get what you are saying! Thank you again.
You and I are the same vintage, Mike! This was one of my favourite albums from my high school days, and well, The Cars ....what more can you say!! 👍😊
It was a great time!! Thank you.

Thanks for the wonderful review. I can't wait to hear my copy. Your wall of records is beautiful. ♥️

Well, I may not be getting the Rino Candy-O after all. My order won't process. I'm thinking they received too many orders. I'll find out on Monday.
That’s weird. I ordered mine 2 days ago on Saturday and I just got the tracking info Today.
I got this from Rhino, mind blowing good copy!!
It is wonderful. Thank you
I have an old one with side one label on both sides. 5E-507-A SP on the label. Is it rare? An older sibling bought it new back in the day.
Probably is rare! That's kinda of cool! Thank you.

I should have metioned that in the video. I thought that was a little wierd. Thanks
Many great memories tied to this album.
It had me dancing!! Have you got Jim out fishing lately? Thanks Stacy.

I’ve heard that the jackets are numbered BEFORE the records are assigned to them, so lower numbers means nothing as to pressing order.
That might exactly be what happend. I looked this morning and it is still available. Have you got yours yet? Thanks
