Thanks for the news! I won't be getting the box set because I already own the vinyl, but it looks great. I have a cousin who's a few years older, and he was the one who first exposed me to the Top. He encountered them at a concert in Ottawa in, I'm gonna say 1972. Deep Purple was the headliner, and the opening acts were ZZ Top and YES, who were both kinda unknown in Canada at that point. ZZ Top started the show, and by the end everyone was dancing in the aisles. A happy show. Then YES comes on and blows everyone's mind. A great show. Then ... two hours goes by. Three hours. Finally Deep Purple comes on at close to midnight, and half the audience had already left. The sloppiest, most turgid show you ever saw. Later on he learned that both Blackmore and Gillan were quite ill during that tour, and Gillan quit the band about 6 months later from burnout. But ZZ Top was the breakout star of that concert.
Always appreciate the transparency and extra information. This set arrives for me on Friday. If this does well a KG cut Deguello and Eliminator would be stellar.
ZZ Top is really in a league of their own. I prefer these albums to the more popular albums that came after MTV made them famous. Tres Hombres is the best album they made, and for my money it’s one of the top dozen rock/blues albums of all time. Never heard a band this tight before or since. Jimi Hendrix said Billy was his favorite guitar player. That’s damned high praise. Fandango has that medley that’s worth the price of admission by itself. Funny that Frank sang Tush in a way that doesn’t rhyme with bush, which is more widely used. Thanks for this video!
@@towertone definitely more popular but still really great guitar bass and drums. Just not as bluesy. But My Head’s in Mississippi is just as good as it gets. An average ZZTop song is better than most bands best song ever. I just think Tres Hombres was a band still making the music they had inside with out feeling like record labels pressuring them for another hit.
Rhino released a ZZ Top boxset in 2017 set entitled "Cinco" comprising the same five albums. Lacquers were cut by Kevin Gray (Fandango, Tres Hombres), Chris Bellman (First Album, Rio Grande Mud, Tejas) and Steve Hoffman (Tres Hombres, Fandango) and mastering was done at RTI. That set sounds pretty good. I wonder how the Rhino High Fidelity reissues sound in comparison.

I saw the fandango tour in Vancouver and the opening act was Heart who was one of the bands that got their start in Vancouver on a local label called mushroom records and just before dreamboat Annie was released, they played a high school dance at my school Alpha secondary school. Back to ZZ Top , there was a ginormous paper machaye cowboy hat being passed around the front of the stage which was festival seating without seat's on the floor

Given their dicey history packaging single HiFi titles and, at least for me, their consistently good exchange process (great communication and within 1-2 weeks to receive replacement), I have to think that they will go the extra mile to bombproof pack these box sets. Otherwise, the return shipping, or - more likely - the discount they offer due to the limited run on these will eat into their profitability something fierce. Thanks in advance and keep doing you, Mazzy.
Good morning, Maz.... 90 degrees here in New Jersey... A few years ago I got the 4 CD set: Chrome, Smoke and BBQ.... It takes ZZ Top back to their days as The Moving Sidewalks and moves forward... The sound is good. My only complaint....? Not enough live stuff...
Mazzy , I have three of the ZZ Top albums. I got the first album plus the green album plus one has the car on front album it’s like the greatest hits. ZZ Top do they play different blues music then BB King does.
I think Frank was in a heavy smack phase, so maybe that's why Billy started using drum machines 😁 If you can get hold of the Quad mix of Tres Hombres i can recommend totally.
I placed my order last night. Today I see all the reviews appearing. I find the improvements that RHINO are making to the High Fidelity category most welcome An issue I wish to see improved is the inner sleeves not easily reinsert back ito the jacket. It's a battle and I here people give u trying and just place the vinyl inside the inner sleeves and lace in the center of the gate fold jacket. Not Good.
I always clean (VPI VACUUM) new Vinyl before I play them. I loath doing so as it's another step but it does reveal a difference in the lps soundstage...IMHO. Do an A B and see (hear) what you think. Btw nice breakdown of ZZ TOP's first five.
ZZ Top is such an important blues-boogie band and will always remain one of my favorites. Some 80's CD German reissues sound pretty good, while some original US/UK vinyls I own sound lousy, or vice versa. ;-) Never liked the remasters, way too much compression and limiting. So one must go album by album which version on vinyl or cd one prefers. Perhaps the Rhino box is more consistent in the sound quality? Thanks for the background info and the review of the Rhino Album Box. Greetings from Vienna, Austria 👍
So, where is the original triple gatefold of Tejas with the individual members photos plus the live photo? This is the reproduction of the more cheap and poor UK version with only a regular gatefold where the original inner lyrics and band photo where used for the inside…
Great band, I've always liked them. OMD were snobby then and looked down on all guitar bands in those days - might still be that way. It's ironic that OMD had a big influence on ZZ Top. That box looks really good,
I will probably not go after this box set, even though I'm curious about the sound quality. I own the original issue LPs, then I went for the 'Six Pack' tragedy, (with the totally ruined 'Tres Hombres", NO BASS!), and I have the 10 CD value set that is great for road trips and sounds decent. But when I play my original albums, I have no complaints. Sometimes, rougher is better!
It was OMD who they first heard in 1980 with synths like this. The following year, in 81 they did latch on to Depeche Mode and the interest expanded. But on the show with OMD was first in 1980. B
Tejas doesn’t get the credit. Very Rolling Stones, especially the opening track. Amazing album. So glad they did all of these. First album is my favorite. But they are all great. We should have called this the Seafair edition with the blue angels in the back round
Wait.. is that a scratch, or was it just the high hat falling over? Why do you think fuzz and wah became so ubiquitously popular? Not only did they provide texture to the music, they concealed cheap turntables & the texture of the average abused vinyl. What do you expect from beer drinkers and hell raisers? People would freak when their Stravinsky got a tic, but we would fondly remember how that scratch got there on a blues-rock record... well, that might be putting lipstick on a pig, but it was a great excuse to release a string of invective. Back when $2.97 was real money, we didn't think about having multiple copies. There was familiarity with knowing where my scratches were on my records. But I had a lot of fun destroying every Saturday Night Fever disc I could get my hands on. When my roommate put a gouge in my brand new Blind Faith, it was all I could do to not put a dent in his forehead.
When the vinyl resurgence ends, boxes like this at $40 per record and the greed of the record companies will be the reason it all ends. At $100 I would be in, not $200....
Forget the vinyl.Early ZZ Top is meant to listened to on eight track tape. Billy Gibbons said at the time that they sold a ton of eight track taps. (preferably in a pick up truck)
ZZ Top's It's Only Love I do hear the Stones-like riff. Drums a little heavy for Charlie. U2's One could have been written by Lennon? I've thought Bono a very good lyricist. I don't think Lennon could have written it. Name a song he's written that comes close.
Thanks for the news! I won't be getting the box set because I already own the vinyl, but it looks great.

Very different than BB King this is rock based Texas blues with somewhat of a Tex mex flavor
Just ordered this and Tutu by Miles Davis. International shipping to Sweden for usd 15.99 is just crazy…
I think Frank was in a heavy smack phase, so maybe that's why Billy started using drum machines 😁
If you can get hold of the Quad mix of Tres Hombres i can recommend totally.
I placed my order last night. Today I see all the reviews appearing. I find the improvements that RHINO are making to the High Fidelity category most welcome
An issue I wish to see improved is the inner sleeves not easily reinsert back ito the jacket. It's a battle and I here people give u trying and just place the vinyl inside the inner sleeves and lace in the center of the gate fold jacket. Not Good.
Just ordered. Also picked up the Bad Co while shipping is free. Might need to get a part time job to pay for all these great releases lol
I always clean (VPI VACUUM) new Vinyl before I play them. I loath doing so as it's another step but it does reveal a difference in the lps soundstage...IMHO. Do an A B and see (hear) what you think. Btw nice breakdown of ZZ TOP's first five.
Enola gay is on "Organisation", the second OMD album, not the first one that you are showing. (FYI)
I saw that too. He also forgot they’re “Orchestral” not “Orchestra “ 🤷♂️
I own M- copies of all the original London albums, and I don’t have room for another boxed set. I’m sure they sound great.
Just ordered
So, where is the original triple gatefold of Tejas with the individual members photos plus the live photo? This is the reproduction of the more cheap and poor UK version with only a regular gatefold where the original inner lyrics and band photo where used for the inside…
Saw Tres Hombres leaned in a record stack at a bunch of indoor keggars back in the mid 70s.
The original three panel foldout of Tejas isn't replicated here - shame. For the price, it absolutely should be
They sure *didn't get "cold feet". But "it sure got cold after the rain fell..."
*Rhino mail day!! A good day to be an influencer! And an obi is a band/belt.*
Great band, I've always liked them. OMD were snobby then and looked down on all guitar bands in those days - might still be that way. It's ironic that OMD had a big influence on ZZ Top. That box looks really good,
That insert comes in the original, Mazzy
And just like clock work, all the influencers are reading off the same script. 😂😜
Hahahaha...Wikipedia page for ZZ Top reading equates to promos sent to influencers. This is a racket and I must be jealous...hahahaha.
Got love for Tejas
kinda disappointed that there's no book or liner notes. even cool live pics.
There are liner notes/interviews, and photos included on each insert included in each album.
It wasn't OMD who they credit with expanding them, it was Depeche Mode.
It was OMD who they first heard in 1980 with synths like this. The following year, in 81 they did latch on to Depeche Mode and the interest expanded. But on the show with OMD was first in 1980. B
A missed opportunity, they already made this set, should of done the next 5 releases in the set
Yes a box seven years ago all from different mastering engineers. Not part of the HiFi series.
Tejas doesn’t get the credit. Very Rolling Stones, especially the opening track. Amazing album. So glad they did all of these. First album is my favorite. But they are all great.
We should have called this the Seafair edition with the blue angels in the back round
@@revelry1969 did you hear a few short segments with the blue angels buzzing? I had to stop the recording a lot yesterday.
@@mazzysmusicyes can hear em in there but not distraction. Great video man. My wallet taking hard hits the last few months. Again in the ringer.
Seems like they should've included Degüello and El Loco to get their full package before they really changed their sound with Eliminator.
As a Texan, ZZ Top records always need to be beat to shit to sound properly Texas. Ain't no smooth and clean in Bexar county.
Wait.. is that a scratch, or was it just the high hat falling over?
I rather play in the Rio Grande Mud than get this set. Only really like Tres Hombres.
When the vinyl resurgence ends, boxes like this at $40 per record and the greed of the record companies will be the reason it all ends. At $100 I would be in, not $200....
Its going to end?
When was the last time the retail price for a high quality 5-LP box set was $100?
All bubbles burst or deflate in the end.
There is no reason this should be $200.
Good Records are worth $40 these days.
Forget the vinyl.Early ZZ Top is meant to listened to on eight track tape. Billy Gibbons said at the time that they sold a ton of eight track taps. (preferably in a pick up truck)
maybe but my first pressings sound amazing especially Tres Hombres
ZZ Top's It's Only Love I do hear the Stones-like riff. Drums a little heavy for Charlie. U2's One could have been written by Lennon? I've thought Bono a very good lyricist. I don't think Lennon could have written it. Name a song he's written that comes close.
OrchestraLLLLL
"Orchestra" over and over...I can barely watch after hearing that.
Awe
I dont have fandango but wouldnt buy the box just for that.
Not for me but looks like a great set for fans
Limited to 2000
I love your videos and your obvious love for “the music, stupid” but you’re costing me a fortune man
🤷🏻♂️😵💫
It's sold out.
Not for me but rhino is killing
Orchestral......say it with me.
Brown Sugar baby
