If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

Love Ornette. Saw him in the sixties at Shelly’s Manne Hole in Hollywood. Have an original mono of this album and is my favorite!😮

Love, love, LOVE to sit and listen to anything examining Ornette and his work. You should seriously consider doing some Jazz history focused videos 🍻✨

I got my copy today, and just finished my first listen. I'm with you all the way. It's an excellent pressing, masterfully recorded, and incredibly well played.
I also found the recording engineers comments on the insert to be very helpful in visualizing the recording conditions. The stereo mix is superb.
Listing on a Pioneer Pl-516 with Nagaoka MP-110 into a Schiit Mani 2 phone pre, then on to a Cary CAD-300 SEI driving Klipsch RB-61 bookshelf speakers.

Chris this was absolutely an great review I ordered this one it’s my favorite Ornette album “ramblin “ was the first track I heard by Ornette the interplay between Cherry and Ornette is so inventive can’t wait til my copy arrive I have an OG Stereo and mono I’m definitely going to compare it . Ornette playing a plastic sax make the session sound melodic and it just flows . Chris love you take on how Ornette was treated by the establishment.

Great review and history lesson! I am waiting for my copy to arrive. Ramblin' was one of the tracks that inspired me to explore Jazz maybe 30 years ago. It is such a free and joyous track and always impresses anyone I play it to, not only is the playing exceptional but the sound is great too (US black and green originals).
I'm hoping that this sells out and we also get This Is Our Music (1* ha ha) and Ornette! too - my three go-to OC albums.
So don't be put off if you have only heard later OC or tried Free Jazz and gave up - maybe you'd be surprised if check it out - and sometimes the best things take a while to appreciate..
Persuaded my wife to see Ornette at the closing gig of the 2011 London Jazz Festival - both of us were blown away!
As far as I recall the last "official" stand alone vinyl release was a Rhino/Scorpio pressing c 2002, while it was also included in the Atlantic Records Box Set (cut at Air Studios - assumed digital master).

I just picked up Ornette Coleman’s The Art of the Improvisors. It’s an interesting album and not my usual type of jazz music. But it’s growing on me. And he painted the art that’s on the front of the album cover. Pretty cool.

This and the Tone Poets have become my favorite series. Quality audiophile records at reasonable prices. With some focus on Rock, I feel like Rhino and Tone Poets complements each other.

Excellent review! I’m glad that you enjoyed it, still waiting to receive mine. Our taste is music does mature with time, mine did a lot, I hope that this pressing is better than the one you had. I agree that the VMP release of The Shape Jazz to Come is wonderful.

What is your set up or is there a video answering this question?

    • @jazzvinylcollector
      @jazzvinylcollector  5 месяцев назад

There is, but I made it a while ago and I need to update it. In short, my setup is still relatively modest compared to many “audiophiles”. I have a vintage marantz turntable with a Nagaoka MP-200 cart, Kef LS-50 speakers, KC-62 sub, McIntosh C26 and MC2105 pre and amp.

Hi, great video, very interesting, thanks for sharing research. I have an old mono pressing of the record, if not the original, plus contemporary boxset and 2 « shape of jazz to come » versions. Ornette’s music is indeed not the easiest to get but it is always joyful to listen to. Especially records with Don Cherry who was a genius ! J from Paris.

Nice video but I have to pass on Ornette Coleman!! Most of the music I have heard of his is really hard to listen to and very unmusical and gets on my nerves after 10 minutes. Wish Rhino would have done something else

Ornette is NOT “unmusical”, just not to your taste, and that is your prerogative

@@charlesparrish4487 You’re right! You like his work I don’t! To you he’s musical to me it’s hard to listen to That doesn’t make you or me right or wrong just a matter of taste

Hey if we all had the exact same taste, life would be boring. We’ll see what else Rhino has in store as the year progresses!
