  • I got a package in from Vinyl Garage from their recent jazz vinyl haul, and thought I'd take a moment to talk about my love for the sub-labels Moodsville and Swingville.

If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

At Ease was my lullaby last night spin that helped get me through the pandemic lockdowns. It is one of my favourites 🙏🏽

I also collect the Moodsville LPs, some utter classics in there, I particularly enjoy the Red Garland ones, very very underrated series.

WCB - nice video, Jazz Shepherd did a similar video. I picked up several titles this year including “The Red Garland Trio” with Eddie Lockjaw Davis in mono - a bit beat up, but I don’t care. Also picked up Dave Van Ronk (VMP) and Tom Rush (OG) this year - love (almost) anything Prestige.

Fun unboxing! Is that a Beverly Kenney org. on the wall behind you?! That would be great if you could do a rundown review of her albums!😮

Nice vid, which made me pull out my Hawk LPs, and I have a bunch of those on the initial OJC series of the 80s with a list price of $6.98(!). I also have a bunch of others, including those on Dr. Jazz. Hawkins is sadly out of favor, one who is, along with other out of favor greats, Tommy Flanagan, Lester Young, Billy Strayhorn, Ben Webster, on my table a lot. In fact, 95% of what I listen to on vinyl is jazz, I stream the rest.

I see Anita O’Day in the background; how about a video about her albums that you have and some of the vocal jazz greats of the past. I read her book, High Times Hard Times; she was a pistol and really had a challenging life. Thanks for sharing!

Great idea and I just so happened to be listening to the live At Mr. Kelly’s date this evening. I have two of her other titles on their way this week too so it would be an opportune time.

@@jazzvinylcollector Great! She was a real piece of work with her best day and the highlight of her career the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. I’m sure you saw the documentary “Jazz On A Summer Day”; that was an excellent film!

I'm not aware of a note of 'Dixieland" or even "big band" on Moodsville or Swingville; these labels showcased what was known at the time, as per Stanley Dance, as "mainstream" jazz: small group swing, only tangentially informed by bop, and meant to invoke the ethos of Commodore and Capital from the forties. This is some of the finest jazz ever waxed, and a fantastic bargain and entry point into this style of jazz, in the same glorious sound and with the same stretched out vibe as the iconic modern stuff. The Hawk Relaxes, indeed.

I first encountered Moodsville in a thrift shop bargain bin in the 1970s -- and it was a Red Garland Trio album. I thought the crazy label name and typography were so squaresville they were hip. And funny -- obvious attempts to cash in on the "mood music" fad by adopting the sort of TV sitcom "beatnik" slang you might have heard from Bob Denver's Maynard G. Krebs in 1963: "Coolsville, Daddy-o!" But given the parent label (Prestige) and the roster of artists (including Tommy Flanagan, Coleman Hawkins, Gene Ammons, Shirley Scott, Kenny Burrell, Yusef Lateef...), it was obvious this wasn't in the same category as, say, popular atmosphere-setting records by moody purveyors of background music like the Mystic Moods Orchestra or 101 Strings (though the latter's spacey "Astro-Sounds From Beyond the Year 2000" from 1969 IS quite the futuristic nostalgia trip -- "Far out, man!"). I've picked up several Moodsville LPs (even CDs) at bargain prices over the years.
As for "unboxing videos," I usually avoid them because unwrapping and disposing of all that necessary packaging waste depresses me. It's the most unpleasant part of getting records in the mail. I enjoyed this one, though, thanks to your usual valuable focus on historical background.
