If you're new to my channel, what you can expect from me is a vinyl collector's approach to the jazz genre. For years, I've only collected vintage pressings and prioritized originals of Blue Note, Prestige, Savoy, Bethlehem, Riverside, New Jazz, and more classic labels. Lately, with the resurgence of the medium and more collectors coming to the space, the music industry has taken notice and prioritized putting out high quality reissues of some of the best albums ever recorded. Subscribe to my channel to watch me navigate how to rationalize how I used to buy vs. how I buy vinyl records today.

Blues and Roots is my favorite recording from Mingus. I have the 1976 reissue from the, "That's Jazz" series in stereo. While the music is fantastic, (I would argue essential to the jazz enthusiast) this version suffers from "Beatle's Stereo," as the music is confined to the left and right speakers with no center fill. Despite the shortcomings that you mention I still hope to get a mono version of this record. To be sure large ensembles are difficult to record well, however, there are some recordings that deliver audiophile sound, such as Duke Ellington's, "Jazz Party in Stereo." As usual I appreciate your analysis.
I'm with you Blues and Roots is one of my faves by anyone. Thanks for the great review. Such a badass record. Soul galore.
Love your room 🤩 thanks for confirming that I “need” this
I love this album, too. About ten years ago, when I got the bulk of my LPs out of storage (well, in the garage) and started collecting again, I bought a copy that turned out to be on WaxTime. At the time, I didn't know about these "gray market" labels that had sprung up in the EU thanks to differences in copyright laws. I thought that was just the way new pressings of these records were being put out in the 21st Century, since most labels had pretty much abandoned vinyl in the '90s. So, I put it on today when I saw you were discussing the Analogue/Atlantic re-released and I'm surprised that it sounds pretty darn good -- quiet vinyl, plenty of detail. Still, I don't want to keep these "bootlegs" around unless there's no other option, so I've found a NM pre-digital era Atlantic rerelease on Discogs. I'm not a fan of 45 rpm remasters because they break up the A & B side sequencing, which somebody did on purpose. (I think the only one I have is a MoFi of Elvis Costello's "Get Happy!!!," which was conceived as a selection of "singles" anyway.) Still, I'm glad someone is treating this music with care and making it available.
I hope they expand their list of artists would love to see Art Farmer and the MJQ included in this reissue series.
Got my copy today. I like it. I don’t love it. The sound quality is good, but not particularly so; especially for a 45. I didn’t find the drums recessed. On some tracks the drums were out front and powerful. Maybe system dependent. By comparison Pre Bird, just re-issued by Acoustic Sounds is AMAZING! And it’s a 33 1/3. I’m looking forward to Coltrane and Ray Charles in this series.
Great review. I also had a stereo copy which I sold after I acquired the 2016 Rhino EU mono edition. I've subscribed to this new AP Atlantic series and I was seriously thinking about selling my copy of this 45 rpm pressing, but your review has me reconsidering my options. It also makes me wonder what a remastered mono version would have sounded like ?
Very pleased with my copy. The only others I’ve preordered thus far are Coltrane’s Giant Steps and My Favorite Things. I may be open to getting other Mingus releases as well.
Nice choices. We’ll see how many I end up with but this is a really strong start to the series
All three of these are ones I have no copies of but have been waiting for solid reissues to come out so I was very excited when this was announced.
I remember you said that you didn’thave a mono pick up. Playing a mono with a stereo pick-up can sometimes create some distorsion.
These are £95.00 in the UK, I have ordered them all but in groups of 3 (from Acoustic Sounds) so only paying £47.50 BUT may be 3 years before I receive them 😔 Thanks so pleased that the first one sounds so good
Not sure if you’ve bought direct from AS before, but I’ve always had to pay VAT on top and sometimes you get charged £12 fee per shipment by FedEx too. Still cheaper than the prices I’ve seen here though by a long way
I’ve pre ordered from Diverse Vinyl at £75 + £5 postage. Best I’ve seen in the UK.
Been buying from AS for 5+ years there is a vat loophole Have not paid vat or fedex import fees for many years. AS is NOT VAT registered so if you keep the total value of the order under about $195 you fall under the tax threshold. So I 've ordered 3 records at a time.@@brandnewstart
Thanks for this, and your other vids, as I, too, am a big Mingus fan -- I think I have everything, in some LP form, he's ever done, even one or two extremely limited releases. Anyway, according to Discogs my copy is a 1970 reissue, mastered by Chris Bellman and cut at Sterling Sound that I picked up at Sounds, St. Mark's Square in NYC, $3.99, a cutout, still in shrink. So, as I have, pretty much, stopped doubling and tripling up on pressings, unless there is a stellar difference, I will have to pass. Insofar as Giant Steps is concerned, my copy is also from the 7Os, and I have the Rhino stereo box. I am excited about the Atlantic 75 series, but will pick and choose as I have so many of the OGs, or mint pre-1982 pressings.
My local vinyl vendor has it listed for €109.99 That’s going to be a no from me.
I have heard from others in Europe that the total landed cost when ordering directly is indeed around 100 euro. It’s a shame that they don’t have a better distribution plan considering how many fans in Europe would purchase if it was more affordable
@@jazzvinylcollector It is even worse. For Germany, Acoustic Sounds quotes $ 58.77 as S&H costs, yielding a total of $118.77. With 19% import VAT this results in slightly more than $ 140 / EUR 133. With UHQR records the relative impact of S&H is smaller...
Record collecting at this level is becoming prohibitive! @@jazzvinylcollector
Michael 45 Quality Vinyl is selling these for 88-89€ including vat and shipping. Unless there’s a hidden cost that saves you a decent chunk of change. Still pricey though.
Great tip, thanks!
What are the antics of Mingus you say the other musicians put up with ?
he punched Jimmy Knepper in the face and damaged his lip such that it impacted his playing for years, he threatened Juan Tizol with an axe, I believe he pulled a gun on another musician during an argument. He expected a lot out of his musicians and acted out, sometimes violently when he was upset with them
@@jazzvinylcollector wow, that’s amazing .im sure Mingus had some pain in him.Thx
Price point? To me these are really inexpensive considering what they are...
