The drummer, Josh Freese, is criminally underrated. He's played for hundreds of musicians, and appears on almost 300 albums.
While touring in ~2004, he broke his leg, so instead of cancelling the tour, he flipped his kit and learned to play reversed.
And still outplayed most drummers live..
🤘🤘
Josh is Incredible.. from one drummer to another .
let's have some love for our man Billy Howerdel, everyone! ^-^
"The devil has my ear today, I'll never hear a word you'll say."
Definitely need to check out their Orestes Stone and Echo live at the Red Rocks performance, perfection. One of my all time favorites!
Yes!!! The Red Rocks show is my favorite live recording. The sound is perfect
Three Libras bruh
Just the whole performance. The version of The Noose is amazing as well
Agreed 100% prefer that live version over the original
Their version of By and Down during that concert is spectacular.
Ahh yes Weak and Powerless an absolute classic. If you want a detailed breakdown of the musicianship that went into this, I'd highly recommend watching Rock Beato's breakdown!
*Rick Beato
Rock Beato is not wrong at all actually xD
The holy trinity Tool, A perfect Circle and Puscifer.
The lines he says at the bridge are, "Little angel go away, come again some other day, the devil has my ear today, I'll never hear a word you say." 13th Step, the album this is from, is about overcoming addiction, referencing 12 step programs.
13th steppin can be sleepin with "new comers" in AA or NA as well
Hence 13th steppin the new comer
A classic from Maynard and the boyZ. Whether it's tool, apc or puscifer, it's always different and interesting. I love this track from a thirteenth step. Also, Billy howerdell is an underrated guitarist and vocalist.
Oh man I actually got to see APC at this actual concert. They really blew up my mind by how tight and clean it was. I'm honestly happy I got to experience then live.
Also fun fact, that Sunday had an amazing lineup; having Goals, then Franz Ferdinand, APC, and closing the main stage Deadmau5. Truly unforgettable.
“....whatever... just so I don’t feel so....”
God I hope if you are reading this you *dont* understand.... and if you are reading it and do understand, I’m glad you are here.
This is a soundboard recording from a different show dubbed over this one! Still brilliant!
My favourite live APC vocals are a performance of The Outsider on Jay Leno - Maynard is on fire and it’s a brilliant song too.
Appreciate your reactions and insights a lot! For Tool I would highly recommend a live (soundboard) recording of Pushit from their Salival album - powerful song with amazing vocals from Maynard too. There is a video recording from Lewiston ‘98 I believe, but the quality of the sound is not all that good - Maynard hits his best ever high note in it though....
“It sounds great in the headphones.”
It sounds great live, too. I saw them on tour after the first album and was blown away with how great they sounded.
I love everything that Maynard does - I have noticed that he has slightly different approaches to how he sings depending on the band - Tool he has more "edge" to his singing - PC is smoother - more "melodic" - and Puscifer he sounds like he's trying to shear off the words with his teeth
Always a wonderful job!
Now complete the "circle" of Maynard and make sure you watch Puscifer. All 3 bands are incredible in their own way.
Keep the great videos coming!
Hopefully Ken hears Carina Round (❤️) sing, too. I really love her singing, especially with Maynard.
The live concert at lollapalooza is fantastic, and shows both their vocals off. I think there's separate cuts of the arsonist and the remedy on yt. I love the harmonies that Maynard and Carina produce...
Where does one even start with Puscifer? I guess like anything else Maynard does, you cant go wrong anywhere. I personally love their 2016 full show in Germany Rock am Ring. I feel that to hear the harmonization in their live music Grand Canyon is the best example. Monsoons from their live DVD is also amazing. I love The Arsonist (I am the Great Cornholio!), Man Overboard or Remedy to show the other side of the band.
Humbling River, please!
Yes, he should try Rev 22:20 or whatever lol
The entire album is a concept album about the journey of an addict going through addiction, withdrawal, recovery, and beyond.
This song is about an addict dealing with withdrawal/being unable to fight it, and giving into the cravings.
"Till in my own grave to keep me level, jam another dragon down the hole, dig into the rhythm and the echo of a solitary sonnet, one that pushes me along and leaves me so, desperate, ravenous, so weak and powerless over you."
Till in my own grave to keep me level = keeping the addiction alive and avoid withdrawal.
Jam another dragon down the hole = "chasing the dragon" reference, an age old analogy to describe chasing a high.
The second verse:
"Someone feed the monkey, while I dig in search of China, white as Dracula, as I approach the bottom."
"Someone feed the monkey" = possibly talking about someone needing to look after ones child whilst a parent looks to score again.
"While I dig in search of China, white as Dracula as I approach the bottom."
Really clever lyrics here, digging in search of China, and then "white" as I Pproach the bottom. China white is obviously a type of heroin. He also emphasises the powerful withdrawals felt by addicts by saying "white as Dracula as I approach the bottom," in other words, dope-sick.
The bridge section
"Little angel go away, come again some other day, the devil has my ear today, I'll never hear a word you say, promised I would find a little solace and some peace of mind, whatever, just as long as I don't feel so desperate."
This signals the giving into the cravings to just make the feeling of withdrawal to stop, and they cannot bare it anymore. "Little angel go away" meaning they don't feel they can live up to their intentions to get clean. "The devil has my ear today, I'll never hear a word you say," the withdrawal is too powerful.
This song is beautiful, but please listen to the whole album, it is heart breaking. It does end on a beautiful and positive note though.
I put this up there with Operation Mind-crime
A perfect Circle - "Orestes" and "The Hollow" - From "Stone and Echo live at the Red Rocks"
Puscifer is another of Maynard’s bands that includes Carina Round. Their harmonies are incredible. Highly recommend.
"I'm not the lead singer..I sing in a band called TOOL, A Perfect Circle and Puscifer. " APC he always has a wig, Puscifer he actually has characters he's created full costume and with TOOL he's in back left slightly behind drums. His autobiography he mentions needing to be really intoxicated, or "something", when he had to perform infront. Billy Howerdell was originally Maynard's roommate and guitar tech for TOOL. HE is the amazing harmony and has a BEAUTIFUL falsetto.
Your announcianation is wonderful and I enjoy your reactions. Thank you very much 🤘
Love watching you react. With such joy and curiosity
The harmonies between Maynard and Carina Round in Puscifer are excellent too. Bullet Train to Iowa live at Acrosanti is well worth a listen (as is the rest of that show to be fair).
Each of Maynard's bands is a different part of his creative genius. It's a never ending rabbit hole.
Orestes from Red Rock show dude. DUDE!! That 1. That's the 1. You should listen to the studio version then that particular live performance!!
good stuff, bro. nice react. what a band
One of my favorites! 🥰
Their harmonies are amazing. If you want more viewers, keep reviewing Maynard :). Love your thoughtful and insightful reactions.
I've seen Tool and Puscifer live.....Such a privilege to see them live!!!
I like APC, the vocalist's manner always sounded pretty interesting and unusual to me
Thank you so much for the video, now I understand it better. 💜
OMFG this is my favorite thack of APC, thank you for choosing that
little angel go away; come again some other day; devil has my ear today; I'll never hear a word you say; he promised I would find a little solace; and some piece of mind; whatever just as long as I don't feel so powerless
my favorite part of this song and probably top 5 of APC songs. His delivery on it is so good. Clean and crisp but haunting in a way.
Maynard has also given many 'explanations' of his placement on the stage over the years but the truest one, the one we can really count on given his propensity to fuck with interviewers, is probably 'none of your business' that he told Joe Rogan (iirc).
if you wanna check out more Perfect Circle live videos watch "orestes" and "3 libras" live or listen to the studio versions of both and "the noose"
I subscribed! And I like how you analyze the vocality!
APC is a pretty consistently tight live band. Not everything’s perfect in live performances as you know, but they bring it all together better than a lot of bands these days without backing tracks and the rest of it. The musicianship is solid and the vocals are always where they need to be. Much respect! And I love your channel! 👍
I love the videos dude keep them coming.
Maynard had admitted to trolling people about stage fright. He said he sits in the back solely for no feedback in the microphone. You can definitely tell in the live recordings by how much of his vocals shine in the mix with plenty of clairty.
You should hear his 22 second scream he belts out in Tool's "The Grudge"
Thanks again for the videos dude, we enjoy watching them.
I subscribed. Loved this review and 100% agree. Actually I've said much the same to express why I love everything Maynard. (And Billy)
Omg.. Lollapalooza Chile 2013, I was there 🤩
3 Libras live on The Tonight Show is probably the best live performance from APC in terms of vocal performance.
Check out him doing the outsider live on a talk show, where you get the Maynard yell lines
Damn it looks cozy af in there
This is my favorite song from A Perfect Circle
awesome reaction to APC man...the track orestes pls next and pls do all live performance I promise you'll never regret
One of my fav songs from one of my fav bands. Was a bit scared to see the reaction is to a live version since the studio versions are usually superior, but this was actually a pretty good performance. :)
The video is from Lolapalooza in Chile, and in the next day Maynard played with Puscifer, I was lucky to be there and it was amazing :)
APC is Maynard's nd Billy Howerdel's (guitarist) project that released their first album "Mer De Noms" in 2000 and it was one of the best rock albums in the hall of fame! Especially when it comes to alternative and spiritual rock :). You should really check out "3 Libras", "Judith" or "The Hollow" for example!
Love me some APC!
You have a new sub !
Seen a video where he talked about how he likes to be behind the drums to here his self while singing better.
my favorite A Perfect Circle live video has to be The Outsider from The Tonight Show. This one is also pretty great
Tight, tight, tight!!! You don't want Maynard to ask you, if you are a dragger or a rusher...
Wow, I love that you reacted to this band and this song! So very different than Tool. If you do another APC song, I very strongly recommend By And Down live at Red Rocks.
Love your videos. Any possibility of reacting to [Oomph! - Auf Kurs] in the future??
Maynard is not in the back, is in line with the drums and David Iha, and is just logistics, also some people say that he has headaches caused by lights, and he voids having a spotlight because of that.
I was there.... also Puscifer play that day.
Awesome day.
💖
More APC plz :) the Jay Leno live show of "3 libras" is legendary but their more recent Red Rocks live show is very very good as well
I think you would enjoy doing a react to 3 Libras from a Perfect Circle.
I just subscribed! I really enjoy your videos. I would LOVE to watch your reaction to Rammstein: Weiner Blut live (recommended version is from MikeNadi2's channel). It's a tour de force and just brilliant. The story behind it is true and so deeply tragic. The performance Till puts on is nothing short of captivating and appropriately portrays the gravitas of the subject matter. He also uses a variety of vocal styles.
You should check out Orestes live at Red Rocks. :)
You should do a reaction to Judith or Pet... actually that should read: *and Pet...
Pet😍😍
Listen Apc 'Orestes' live stone and echoes or 'Judith ' live
you seem like a nice dude. *subscribed*
Please react to "when the levee breaks" live at red rocks... a perfect circle👍
Or any song from that show for that matter... long time subscriber and fan. Keep up the great reactions
Would love to see you analyze/react to Words Darker Than Their Wings by Alter Bridge (live version at Royal Albert Hall)
"Is Thirteenth Step the best non-Tool album of the 21st century?"
"Yes! Yes, it is."
Some of the best covers definitely. I love even more than some originals. Check puscifer if you like Maynard
A Perfect Circle performed 3 Libras on an episode of (I believe) Jay Leno (or Letterman, I don’t recall exactly) that is spectacular. It’s such a beautiful song and you can really hear the pain and anguish in Maynard’s voice during the performance.
While Tool is my favorite band, APC is, in a lot of ways more musically pleasing to me. MJK harmonizes so well with Billy Howardel (the lead guitarist).
I subscribed...a while ago :-P
Maynard stands behind or off to the side for the sound. He’s mentioned it in past interviews.
You need to check out “deadly sinners” by three inches of blood. KILLER VOCALS
I know I'm a little late but there's this band called Tallah the vocals are very interesting its a mix of Slipknot, Korn, Mudvayne
This song is part of the album The Thirteenth Step or Thirteen Steps which is, for what I have read, an album about drug addiction and rehab. Weak and Powerless is basically someone admitting how they are desperate for the drug and how weak and powerless they are to their addiction. Hence why the "The devil has my ear today, I'll never hear a word you say". This album is serene and powerful, its probably the ONLY album I can't hear without getting too emotional.
good reaction, has anyone suggested Talk Talk or So long and thanks for the fish yet?
Thanks for the reaction Ken! Interesting as always.
Please, please react to Dermot Kennedy! He's popular in Ireland right now but pretty under-recognized elsewhere. He has such a unique voice and he is a genuinely creative songwriter. His songs are so heartfelt and beautiful and the lyrics really stick with you.
Men this amazing reaction, pleaseeee react a song 3 libras is my favorite song.....! I have a cover vocal with my band in Colombia.
Cheers master
You should do a reaction to MJK's other side project, Puscifer and the song Rev 22-20 (dry martini mix). Almost haunting how the vocals are done.
Ken. Please do some looking into Kimbra. First suggestion “Plain Gold Ring” by Nina Simone. Her cover is wondrous.
Im surprised you havent had a chris stapleton reaction yet. As a vocalist Id love to hear your thoughts on his singing. Check out whiskey sunrise
Two Tool songs and now APC!
If looking for a very unique voice, I recommend Dallas Green aka City and Colour. He never seems to get any vocal reaction love and really should!
Notable performance videos include:

- "Blood" ruclips.net/video/fFc6srefEOY/видео.html

- "Nutshell" (Alice in Chains cover) ruclips.net/video/Qzdy_jaS4nw/видео.html
can you please react to ONE OK ROCK? They're a japanese Rock Band, and for me one of the best live bands.
As you seem to like Chesters voice - Taka, the lead singer, will be right up your alley.
He made a great cover of Adele's Hello. But for original perfomances, I recommend "I was King" Live with Orchestra, or really ANY live Performance you may find.
Just subscribed. Could you critique Cradle of Filth? Interested to see if his voice has the range that it seems to. Thanks so much!
Puscifer - Bedlamite
Live at Arcosanti, AZ. Oct.30th 2020.
please
I subscribed... like a year ago.
i think the sound is not from this gig. i think its from the "Stone and Echo live at the Red Rocks" recording.
I subscribed
Thanks Johnny Padilla for subbing!
Can we get a deep purple - child in time (live 1970) please Ken! :)
Ken, have you reacted to "Bad Wolves" version of Zombie? I just love this song.
Maynard doesn't hover at front-center stage like most singers because he doesn't want to be the sole focus of the audience. He has been quoted as saying that in his opinion every member of the band is equally important so by not standing in front of the stage the crowd is able to focus on the band as a whole.
Now you should definitely listen and "react" to the song "Valhalleluja" from Nanowar of Steel, I truly believe it's a masterpiece and it deserves the consideration and judgement from an expert like you
Hi from Argentina Listen hasta la eternidad by Septimo Angel ft Adrián Barilari
You really need to react to Home Free's Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.
Ken u still havnt done Fear Factory for me....😭 Please do a song buddy. Merry Christmas...😊
Hey! Constance by Spiritbox. Do it.
You should check out Arctic Monkeys | Knee Socks ( outro to My Propeller ) lollapalooza 2014 for one of the greatest transitions of all time.
James has loops and an ok voice
I'd love to see a Love Again (PEntatnoix) reaction, there's a lot of really cool stuff in it
Please do a reation of Yanis Papadopoulos singing Ghost Love Score. You will not be disappointed.
I subscribed ! I would love you to do a reaction to Rosalia “Me Quedo Contigo” live ♥️
Little angel go away, the devil has my ear today I'll never hear a word you say........
You need to react to Maynard other band Puscifer.
