HANDS DOWN! The best analysis/ reaction I’ve ever seen to this song. Man when you started playing, it literally gave me chills. Everything you were playing sounded absolutely amazing!! For me it actually enhanced the song.
If I'm not mistaken, this song is about Maynard's struggle with his mother, Judith Marie, being in a medical coma for a lot of his life at that point. I've always taken the comparison to Orestes to mean that he felt like he was duty bound to end her suffering but couldn't bring himself to do it. Thus, the need to "sever this umbilical residue keeping me from killing you." The line "Give me one more medicated peacful moment, cause I don't want to feel this overwhelming hostility." is especially wrenching. I feel like it also suggests that, even in the few instances where she was lucid, things were strained in their relationship. That must have been so rough for someone who clearly loved his mother deeply.
@@maicamedina4438 That's a different song, but that song was also about his mother. This whole album is full of his emotions on the subject at the time.
Maynard was only 11 when his mother died from complications due to the aneurysm. I think what Maynard is doing here is putting across the pain and anguish of losing his mother at this young age, by conveying the equally distressing pain Orestes was in at being in such a no-win situation that was forcing him to choose to kill his own mother. I tend to think he is saying "Put yourself in that truly horrible situation, could you do that to your own mother that you love so much, to save your own skin? How would you feel? That is how I felt grieving for my mother, at having to accept that she was gone forever"
Oh man, going into your back catalog, hearing you play piano along side one of my favorite APC songs makes me desperately want a piano accompaniment for this whole album.
Excellent choice with Orestes. This solo wasn't on the studio version but adds so much struggle to the message of the song. It all builds to this amazing climax at the end.
Saw them live when this came out. Maynard performed the entire show in a white box that was backlit so that you could only see his outline. It really added to the whole vibe of the show. Great artists, all.
Orestes, son of Agamemnon, grandson of Atreus, an Atreides himself. When Agamemnon returned to Mycenae from Troy, Orestes's mother and her lover Aegesthus slayed him. So Orestes avenged his death. But then the Erinyes, ancient Greek chthonic deities of vengeance went after him until Goddess Athena interfered. Oresteia, the Trilogy of Ancient Greek tragedies written by Aeschylus(5th century b. C.) it is of course about his journey to catharsis.
It's one of my absolute favourite Maiden songs, but given the lyrics, I'd say it might be much more based on David Lynch's Dune than Herbert's original material. Can't wait for the upcoming Dune movie, by the way! It looks like it's trying to be much more faithful to the original :)
@@Wolfborn8 Didnt the movie come out in 1984? Piece of mind is from 1983. Edit: The movie was a big letdown for me after reading all the books. Maybe because I didnt see it when it came out. Will probably give it another shot tho.

Your brother has great taste. This is my go-to song when I'm feeling crappy and need to get lost. It's glorious. Most beautiful hardcore song I've ever heard.
The story of Agammemnon's family, especially in Aeschylus' plays, is a great look at the ancients' idea of justice. Basically, in the old poems and the pre-classical era of Greece, you were expected to avenge wrongs done to your family, especially murder. So Agammemnon sacrifices his daughter Iphigenaea to Artemis, Clytemnestra kills him for that, Orestes kills Clytemnestra for her murder, and then he flees to Athens. And in Aeschylus' telling, when he gets to Athens, Athena holds the Furies at bay, and institutes the first jury trial, where Orestes is eventually found innocent (at first it's a hung jury, and then Athena casts the deciding vote), and the Furies are turned into the Eumenides. It's about the ability to use rule of law and a more civilized way of resolving conflict to, as you said, break out of cycles of revenge and violence. For a great modern-day sequel/commentary on it, there's a great Wonder Woman comic called _Hiketeia_ that acts as a self-conscious sequel to the Orestes myth that's absolutely great. Anyway, this song is gorgeous, and it's great to hear someone really dive into it.

@@neildavies473 I thought that might have been the case!
I can live without a Maiden Monday, I just listen to them on my own. 😁 I missed the piano reactions, and I'm missing a bit of Nightwish too...
Oh and "Rainbow - Stargazer". Have a nice day Doug!
Perfect circle, live on jay leno performing "three libras" is another great performance.
I saw A Perfect Circle at the Warfield Arena in SF and again in Downtown San Jose sometime soon after this album was released. Besides the killer shows at cool quaint arenas I still laugh to myself thinking about the t-shirt that Maynard was wearing at one of the shows... "Fuck Me I'm Famous" ... looked like one of the t-shirts that Beavis & Butthead wore... lol.
Enjoying your channel, Doug. The name Orestes brought to mind The House of Atreus Acts 1 & 2 by Virgin Steele. If you aren't familiar with these albums I think you would really enjoy them. There is almost 3 hours worth of great music in these, but well worth the time. I'd love to see your reaction to even a few of the tracks like Child of Desolation, Iphigenia in Hades, Arms of Mercury and When the Legends Die. I think you'd really appreciate these ones.
Would love to see your reaction to Judith - really goes together with Orestes. Hope you fit that in sometime soon
I'd love to see your reaction to cacophony's "concerto" or "speed metal symphony"
Those piano accents were on point.
welllllll... if you don't do maiden on maiden monday, we're gonna do maiden on maiden monday ourselves.
_walk away-aaaaaaaay_
_look out now, baby, won't you take me away?_
_sittin' here, think it's gonna be a new day_
_gotta get my song and I can't go wrong_
_gotta keep on roaming, gotta sing my song_
You should do a live version of Hocus Pocus with Focus from the seventies. Then you're in for a treat.
Oh Maynard is singing... let me whale out on the piano
My personal favorite on the album
A perfect circle is a great band! Of course,Tool is as well!
