They recorded this in ONE NIGHT. Quincy Jones literally had a note on the door that said leave your egos outside and they did!!! They recorded this after a music awards show since everyone was in town. They sang and recorded until dawn and it was done, a masterpiece.

Not only their egos, but their entourages, too. Managers, agents, friends, family...all those people had to stay out of the room. According to the reporter covering it, everyone in the room was in awe of everyone else and feeling shy around them. The newer artists were in the presence of the legends who had paved the way--Diana Ross, Dionne Warwick, Ray Charles, Smokey Robinson, Harry Belafonte, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Kenny Roger, Willie Nelson, Stevie and Michael (just to name a few) and several of whom were still going strong or having a resurgence in their popularity. And the older artists were in awe of these ones, all of whom were best-selling artists at this time. They were fans of each others' work, and in the end, they were here for a charitable cause. This wasn't a photo-op or a publicity stunt, and no one was throwing a hissy diva fit about whether or not they got a solo or where they were placed on the risers (though evidently Michael said to Quincy that Diana was not going to like where they had put her. Quincy figured Michael knew her better than anyone else and said ok, so they moved her piece of masking tape up to the front row before people started arriving). Before they started, Quincy brought in a group of people from Ethiopia who tearfully told the entire group how very much it meant to their people that these stars would get together to do this to try to help raise money to help the Ethiopian people. It was an emotional moment for everyone that reminded them why they were there and what they were doing this for.
Do I personally think maybe someone like Smokey Robinson should have gotten a solo bit instead of maybe Al Jarreau, or instead of giving Michael TWO solo parts? Sure. Smokey was definitely a bigger star than Al and had more hits to his name, and Smokey would have sounded beautiful harmonizing with Diana. But hey...given the way things turned out, I can hardly argue the point with a man who has more musical knowledge in his pinky finger than I ever will. :) There is a reason, after all, Quincy was in such high demand and producing for damn near everybody.

First off, I want to say...Love that you reacted to this. However...lol...
    The remark at the beginning....
Michael Jackson and "some other people"
I just about fell out of my chair in shock hearing how so many other famous singers were described.
This song was recorded/filmed while a lot of famous/legendary, singers were gathered at a music awards ceremony. Back then, people like Stevie Wonder, Tina Turner, Dionne Warwick, Bob Dylan, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, and Willie Nelson were pretty much legendary singers.
Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Perry, and a few others were well on their way into that legendary status...and most of the rest were very very popular at the time and are still well liked, but I don't think most would quite qualify as 'legendary'
And although he didn't get a solo chance, Harry Belafonte was there too, back in the mid-1950s and early 1960s he was pretty popular. There was a documentary...about the creation of this music video...where all the other singers, honored Harry Belafonte by singing a part of his song 'Day-O' : )
That's pretty awesome, I think, that all those there acknowledged him like that. : )
Legends or just super popular for a brief time...all of them were more than just 'some other people'
And before anyone jumps on me about this post...no... I'm not angry...actually laughing a little and a little sad that so many of the younger generation, don't know anything about these artists. But I think it's Awesome...that he, and other young people are reacting to music that their parents, grand parents and even great grand parents listened to. It keeps the music alive.

In" 94"The idea came from renowned Actor Harry Belefonte. He had saw and heard England's version and rushed back to the US to convince Quincy Jones to do it. Whom therefore talked Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson to write it!
The next task was to get everyone in the same room to record it and not interfere with their individual schedules.
So, Quincy decided to do it the same night of the American Music Awards so he could have everyone afterwards in the same room! It is rumored that everyone that was there ALL left their egos at the door! Well, besides Michael Jackson of course! The front row of the crowd span was pretty much all MJ's siblings! The song was recorded on January 28th, 1985. Released on March 7, 1985!
The rest is history! As you can see there's no Prince (whom Michael Jackson couldn't stand) and no Whitney Houston! Her career wasn't as well established as she soon would be!

He was half of SNL music/comedy duo the Blues Brothers with John Belushi. And in the middle of it all is 60's voice of his generation and counter-culture icon, Bob Dylan. FYI - his son Jakob Dylan fronted 90's singing sensation group The Wallflowers. Michael Jackson wrote this song and it was produced by Quincy Jones. Like others in the day, I counted down the days to watch it's debut on MTV or VH1. I don't remember which one. The pairing of Stevie Wonder & Bruce Springsteen was genius. Their voices contrasted beautifully.

    Ray Charles
Quincy Jones conducts the group and did a lot of the production work. In the back you see Harry Belefonte, who had the original idea to do this. He got the inspiration from British artist who did "Do They Know It's Christmas", he is standing next to comedian Dan Akroyd (Saturday Night Live, Blues Brothers).
FYI there was a remake of "We Are the World" made in 2010, 25 years later - We Are The World 25 For Haiti - Official Video (you should do a reaction to this as well) - ruclips.net/video/Glny4jSciVI/видео.html

The woman with the different colored hair is Cyndi Lauper (“Girls Just Want To Have Fun”) and following her is Kim Carnes (“Bette Davis Eyes”). Lauper wasn’t that impressed with Quincy Jones’s song and told her manager that she didn’t really like it at first, but she would sing on it if asked, because she wanted to be a part of the movement. Her manager let it slip that she thought “We Are The World” was too similar to another song (which I can’t remember). Quincy, who was twenty years Cyndi’s senior, was furious. While rehearsing, he made her take her multitude of necklaces off, believing their rattling was distracting. Cyndi was a good sport and went along with Quincy’s suggestions, and it turned out that her part (along with Michael Jackson’s and Ray Charles’s) was one of the highlights of the song. She is only one of twenty entertainers to have a Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award.
