  • The IKEA alex drawers are famous on RUclips. You click on just about any video that has to do with minimal clean office or home setups and you will probably see some form of these drawers from IKEA being featured, shown or just passed by with a camera. That is how my wife became aware of there existence. Some random video she was watching about organization was all it took for her to bug me to the point of taking a trip to our local IKEA store.
    Being a DIYer with ample woodworking tools in my workshop it was a hard pill for me to swallow but being the loving husband that I am I decided to put my pride behind me and get her what she wanted.
    So first thing is first I'm going to show me unboxing the pieces so you can see exactly what you are getting and how you are getting it. Then I'm going to assemble the unit and go over any of the problems I may have encountered and or tell you about the good as well. Finally, I will be doing a short review of some of my initial thoughts and reactions of this drawer unit.
    One thing to note is that there are varying version of this drawer system for sale. This review is only for the system you see featured in this video. The reason is that the size of this unit is small enough to save it from some basic structural flaws that may become prevalent if you make it wider, taller or in some cases, add wheels to it.
    The reason I mention wheels or casters as they are actually called is that if you start putting stresses on this unit that are not simply vertical in nature, but also horizontal, as will be the case if you start pushing it from the side to move it around the room. You will probably start getting some play or movement in the unit as the connecting hardware stresses the particle board they are set into.
    That is the huge drawback to using particle board is that it compresses and tears its layers of wood chips easily. I'm sure we have all seen the assembly required furniture pieces that sway from side to side.
    Cam screws with cam locks only hold things together. They do not protect against torsion forces which all furniture pieces are subjected to.
    However, you may be able to spare this unit from that same fate especially if you use it as a platform for a desktop such as the Lennmon desktop from IKEA or a DIY desktop like the one I built for myself. You can check that video out here:

    Thank you this video was so helpful in putting together my daughter's Alex drawers. It was our first time putting furniture together and would have been so frustrated if we hadn't found your video. We are very appreciative.

    About 26 years ago I purchased cheap laminate furniture. The laminate was basically paper with a photo of wood printed on it. As one can imagine it got scraped up easily. I think higher quality modern laminate furniture has a thicker more robust laminate. At my office we have IKEA furniture that has lasted over 20 years and three office moves. It may last another 20 years.

      I think I owned something similar to your wood photo piece. That was popular back in the 80's to early 90's...I cringe now lol. Thanks for watching.

    Thank you for your easy step by step process! While it took me a little longer than you, I did it all by myself!!!

    Great video Stan we tend to buy furniture like that mainly for the bedrooms, like wardrobes and drawers etc, and this video was great.
    When i do mine i firstly check all the parts are there, with the old pencil tick next to hopefully each one, then assembly time. I quite like putting this type of furniture together, like yours i have had some that deserve the price, but i have had some that don't which once built were returned, or unless i got a big discount off the price, then i keep them and fix it up properly.
    Again a great video mate.

      It was quite relaxing to assemble. I had low expectation going into it because of past experience like you say but this one turned out well. I was going to do an IKEA Hack video if things went south.

    I was wondering why my drawers kept "lagging" but after watching this video i realised the screws on the side are supposed to be screwed in from the inside of the drawer lol, thanks

    Hello ! I forgot to add one piece of wood "screw" and I don't know if it's the bottom or top (side walls have it all). Would it be a problem if I keep it like that? It'd be really hard to disassembly it ...

      If it’s not the type of screw that locks into the cam locks then you should be ok as long as the unit isn’t weak to side stresses.

    Can you tell me if those drawers (fronts, sides) are 1/2" or 3/4" material ?

    • @RBgamesbr
      @RBgamesbr 3 года назад

      It's probably 16mm = 5/8 inch, a common thickness for particle board.

    Burning question on my mind.....where did you get the Mickey lamp?
    Nice assembly video. I'm thinking about buying a unit this year.

      Tiki Mickey was a birthday gift from my wife many years ago. We live near Disney World so I assume she found it at a store at one of the resorts or parks. You are so right about the drawer dividers. Everything is getting tossed all over the place.

      I’m not sure I can help with that level of information. Can you not get the locks in the holes? Are the pins not engaging so you can’t turn the locks?

    Thank you ! I just assembled mine today. One thing bothers me..... and if you can tell me if it's normal or not i'd be grateful.
    When I push my drawer from sides it "wiggles" for a few short moments. Like in this video : ruclips.net/video/HlL5y9hUPl8/видео.html . When I do that from front or back ,it doesn't. Is this behavior normal ? It's not like I would push it because I enjoy that ,but I wanted to give test it's structure. I mention that I screwed all the bolts and cam locks hard with a drill.

    • @simplyeasydiy
      @simplyeasydiy  4 года назад

      Nope, it isn’t suppose to do that. Something is wrong. You have a cam lock not Engadged or something similar. The unit is supposed to be able to withstand torsion forces better than that. If left like that you run a high chance of it failing. Good luck. Don’t use a drill to tighten cam locks. It is possible to over turn them and do damage.
