This helped a lot. Great information showing the length and depth of these units. Pictures can only do so much, but seeing actual tangible items in the drawers, helps with the perspective of how deep or shallow they are. Thank you!
This was so helpful! I had not noticed the wide one with castors was so much shorter. And I love that bottom drawer combination idea!! Thanks for sharing!
Thought it worthwhile to mention that IKEA's kitchen countertops (such as the KARLBY or the BARKABODA) are a more sturdy but more expensive table top for these type of desks - I've built two so far and they work wonderfully, love the Alex drawers. Thanks for the great video as well as the quick reference of the dimensions on your site!
I’m setting up my new crafting space and will be using the Alex line so this was very helpful, thank you! Combining those 2 drawers?? Wow, that’s a great hack!
I wanted to get the wide shorter drawers then I wanted the alexwith the file cabinet but now I might stick to getting the 9 drawers and using the bracket hack for the bottom two drawers to I have more space and I have a filing drawer. Thanks so mich
I also use Alex drawers and love them. I didn't know about the compartmentalized inserts which I'm going to look into to. And Hershey really wanted to be part of your video!
To be clear, any of the Alex drawer sets are available with or without casters. I believe the casters are also available for purchase separately. I'm surprised the wider drawers you got are shorter than the narrower drawers. I used the turquoise-green variant in my desk setup. I think they are some of the nicest drawers I've ever owned.
Thanks! I'll just add that the narrower drawers are at the perfect height for standard desk height (and match Ikea legs). And the wider drawers fit nicely under the desk to allow for handy storage for cutting and ironing mats. I love the turquoise ones! People complain Ikea is made from press wood, but these drawers have held up nicely!
@@TerryCowans In fact IKEA also sells a desktop as part of the Alex collection. The Alex drawers have an optional configuration where you can have the predrilled holes on the top surface that match predrilled holes in the desk top. I'm sure the Alex drawers are particle board, but that's fine for a drawer set. IKEA has plenty of cheap junk available but they also have nice quality products for decent prices. I got a Tarva chest of drawers which is made of untreated solid wood. I really enjoyed the scent of fresh wood while assembling it.
Hello! A mat 18"x24" fits perfectly on top of the Alex Drawer Unit with Casters. It's an "OLFA 24-inch by 18-inch self-healing mat". Here's the link -- amzn.to/3VKM2Fb Here's a cheaper brand you may like -- amzn.to/4ba1tv4 Here's a Fiskars brand -- amzn.to/4c7hLXc * If you use my links, I make a small commission at no cost to you --- thank you!!
Your video was very helpful. Just one question, please tell me the names of the parts you used to fix the last two drawers together so that they can be used. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! We used 2 of these on each drawer "L-shaped corner brackets" -- see amzn.to/41ZD7jq. You could also use one piece of wood (maybe 2" x 6"). It needs to attach to both drawers so that when you pull it open, they both stay together. I added a picture to the post so you can see how it is attached -- reddinUp.com/organize/Alex-Drawers/. Good luck!
With the 2 Alex drawers and the lemon table top how do you keep it from moving do you use mounting brackets if so which ones please putting mine together this weekend
Between the table top and the Alex drawers, I am using non-slip shelf liner. It's working great and I can rearrange the configuration if I need to. Here's an example of the shelf liner -- amzn.to/3oYBBR2. You don't need a large piece, any little piece will keep the desktop from moving. But you could use brackets too!
From IKEA website -- Alex screws 105021 replacement 8mm Stainless Steel Phillips Head www.ikea.com/us/en/assembly_instructions/alex-drawer-unit__AA-844481-4_pub.pdf Hope this helps! Oh, if you have a store near you, they might give you a bag of them. Talk to someone in the clearance section!
Sorry, I was out of town and wanted to measure the mat for you! I have two self-healing mats that work are sized perfectly for the top of these Alex Drawers ... The first is from OLFA size 18"x24" (green) -- amzn.to/3quAjxm ... The second is from Fiskars 18"x24" (gray) -- see it here amzn.to/3OV83yd You can see they are about $31 to $33. I believe JoAnn Fabrics carries these.
We went to buy these drawers, but the fact that the drawers don’t open all the way stopped us. For as much as they cost the drawers should have full extension sliders.

Had to rewatch this multiple times cos I was so distracted by your gorgeous pupper ❤️❤️❤️
Haha! Hershey follows me all over the house. She can barely do the stairs. We love her.
This was really helpful! Thank you for showing how you use these drawers! I was specifically looking for one for my sewing items--your video is great!
Oh, thank you! You are too kind!

Love my Ikea alex drawers on castors!!!
Awesome!!
Love my IKEA furniture!
Awesome! They hold so much stuff!
Great vid, thanks. My wife will love these!
Glad you like them!
Exactly what I needed, thank you!
Glad it helped!
Do you happen to have the interior dimensions of the drawers? Wondering if they fit an 18"x24" size paper.
Inside of Alex with Caster is 16 3/4" x 23 5/8". So I don't think it would fit.
Can you link the green cutting matt that was onto of the caster unit by the sewing machine, please?

I got these second hand with no screws keeping the drawer on the rails. Could you provide the screw specifications so I can buy some? Cheers

Where did you get the measuring mat to fit on top of the unit with casters?

Is there a way to make the Alex drawers higher?
Idea has legs and I think there are different heights too
I have also seen folks build a base to sit the drawers onto. That might work for you.
We went to buy these drawers, but the fact that the drawers don’t open all the way stopped us. For as much as they cost the drawers should have full extension sliders.
True. They do not open 100%. There is 6 inches that remains inside the unit.
That said, they work wonderfully and store a ton.
The don’t open out completely because of safety (kids)
That’s one of the things that’s put me off too 🤔
Pfft i dont see the dimentions of the alex draws/ desk/units
