2 things: a). Michael Mann is an absolute master, when it comes to cinematography. b). Tom Cruise should definitely play more villains, he was incredible as Vincent.
Tom cruise hitman in collateral is one of the best things in the movie history. Probably tom cruise underrated best movie that no one talks about. This must be added in your watchlist.
The actual star of this film is city of Los Angeles. I've never seen the city of LA shot any more beautiful than this film. All the talks aside, thanks for the edit.
"Someday, someday my dream will come?" One night you'll wake up and you'll discover it never happened. It's all turned around on you, and it never will. Suddenly you are old. It didn't happen, and it never will because you were never going to do it anyway. You'll push it into memory, then zone out in your barcalounger, being hypnotized by daytime TV for the rest of your life. Don't you talk to me about murder. All it ever took was a down payment on a Lincoln Town Car, and that girl... you can't even call that girl. What the fuck are you still doing driving a cab?“
Best film of Michael Mann. Nihilism always has two faces. An active one (the serial killer) and a passive one (the taxi driver). Love is the only way to get out of it. 11/10
To me, the emphasis of the world continuing on in the background while the events of the movie take place is one of the things that makes it stand out and is one of the major points of the movie. The top-down scenes of Max's cab being just another vehicle in a sea of headlights, the numerous cars moving in the background while Vincent searches the offices for his last target, and most importantly, Vincent's dialogue about the dead body doing laps on the train for 7 hours before anyone notices. From the acting, the directing, the cinematography and the story, this movie is nothing short of a work of art.
that's a really good point. I was exposed to a lot of death by age 5... I remember at a young age realizing when people die the world dosent stop. you will be forgotten. people go on. and those shots with the background capture that perfectly.
This film is incredibly underrated. A lot of people will always jump to TC’s best movies being from the Mission Impossible lineup, but Collateral is something else.
Collateral is well crafted, edge of your seat, and fast paced thriller with superb cast. Michael mann's visual striking film perfectly shows the dark side of LA as well the life living in it. It is one of his best movies i've ever seen. Spectacular work of unhinged moviemaking
This movie is a tight slap to those who says we cant shoot beautiful films on digital. This was the earliest work to be done in digital and boy it still looks so good.
Michael Mann is the master of making the greatest L.A. film noirs ever. I love his directing style and its characters are great. Well suited with nice hair. Tom Cruise can play a very good villain and he was amazing, relentless.
A beautiful compilation of the many shots of Collateral with the haunting, tribal like vocals and strings of 'Requiem' Thanks for this. One of my favourite movies of all time and one of Michael Mann's best movies alongside Heat for sure. The cinematography of L.A at night, the fantastic score by James Howard Newton alongside Antônio Pinto's 'Requiem' that has recurring variations throughout the movie (cab drive later on When Max and Vincent are chatting has a unreleased variation that is a particular favourite of mine) the haunting, tribal like female vocals in that track alongside the strings, horns etc and when Vincent finally succumbs to his injuries on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, finally freeing him of his tormented life and continued existence. Paul Oakenfold's, Korean mix of, 'Ready Steady Go!' in the Korean Nightclub scene was a great touch and a very addictive track to listen to and let's not forgot, Audioslave's 'Shadow Under the Sun' with Chris Cornell's powerful vocals, a great vocalist, a track that plays when Max finally decides to defy Vincent, take control of his life and crashes the cab, a great scene. I don't think we will ever see a movie on the level of Collateral again. It was a product of it's time, a very different time period and a time capsule of a better time in many ways. I one I wish I could return to. Tom Cruise steals the show as Vincent in the movie and although it's possible Adam Sandler may of done a good job as Vincent, I think in a way, Sandler turning it down was a stroke of luck since Cruise is Vincent and he pulls out all the stops to make such a compelling, tragic character with his nihilistic frame of mine and his speeches throughout the movie, especially the one where he speaks to Max about not accomplishing anything with his life and how his dreams will die and he'll zone out on his Barcalounger, being hypnotised by daytime TV for the rest of his life or how about the one where Vincent tells Max about having little care for the amount of people who die under mass death on other continents etc, there's so many great moments like that throughout the film. it's a tragedy Tom never did anymore roles like this again, to this level. He was truly committed to this role, as always the case with Cruise, learning to get in the frame of mind of the character, learning to use the weapons etc and even went undercover as a UPS driver if I remember correctly. I will always regret not having seeing this back in 2004 in theatres when I was younger. I think If I had seen it then, it would of had a greater impact on me at a younger age and left a sense of seeing the world for what it really is, through the eyes of Vincent. I'd imagine a lot of people left the theatres changed in some ways and maybe even brought about nihilism or existentialism feelings in some for the first time.
@non saprei che nome mettere Now here is someone who really knows Cruise's career. But I'd add Born on the 4th of July and Jerry Maguire there as well.
I've been waiting for this one, but it was definitely worth the wait. Fantastic. You've now done Heat and Collateral, you 've definitely got to do The Insider, Thief and Manhunter. Mann has a visually superb filmography, he's one of my favourite filmmakers.
I've never seen any other film film Los Angeles in such a dark way and yet still bring out such beauty. The Los Angeles in this movie is like the most beautiful nightmare
By the description I found that this film had 2 cinematographers. But I guess I could notice the color and even the frame rate seem to change sometimes in the movie. Just watched it. Michael Mann is great. Heat is another masterpiece.
Good capture of how Michael Mann makes cities strong co-stars in this film and especially in Heat. All those night shots - love them. Tom Cruise is so different with grey hair and suit to match. An interesting contrast to all the colors of the nighttime city. 👍
One of YOUR best, if not THE best! Beautiful work and great music selection. Yes, what everyone said before, a great movie, and you obviously had great visuals to work with, but just plain over the top! This and Blade Runner 2049 are my two favorites of your work that I've seen so far, and you make it hard to choose.
One of the most beautiful looking films, seriously. To see this in the big screen and also at night in 2004…. I can’t describe it to you. Nothing else has felt like it.
Gorgeous cine work by Dion Beebe and Paul Cameron. It's a clean look with mostly practical lighting on then-new digital cine cameras. I like how Mann makes digital have its own look instead of trying to ape film stocks. Miami Vice takes it further by pushing gain way up and using ambient light, so it's a dirtier and grittier look.
@ the ambiance, check out the first bit of the movie when it’s opening and they are building that cyberpunk-like ambiance thru out the movie. Especially GiTS 2, innocence. The colors, that flat but still feels bright in the night. You’ve got nothing to lose with ghost in the shell! Give it a watch! (Animated btw)

Something about the atmosphere of this movie turns L.A. after sunset into West Coast Gotham City while also seeming like a spin-off prequel to Blade Runner.
Once again the plot is dependent on the police being totally incompetent. Uh, why wasn’t a perimeter put into effect at the nightclub? They knew the cab license plates too, pull his ass over! And the few people on the metro transit at the end don’t panic or call the cops during the final shootout?! The operator keeps on driving post-gunshots?!!
Love this movie, i think this is one of Tom Cruise best performance since Magnolia and Eyes Wide Shut, Heat I love ya, but I love this movie a bit more.
