I always thought he was quite lucky the second guy had his gun stuck in his pants, otherwise he would’ve probably been shot while “working” on the first guy.
+Lieutenant Prick The only problem I have with the thugs and briefcase scene is WHY the guy had to get close to him? The second Tom says "Yo homie, is that my briefcase?" he would be shot dead. In other words there is a BIG discrepancy between how great hitman Tom is and the reckless behavior he has in this kind of situation. Great scene , tho :)
+Leo Nidas That's an extremely common mistake action movie goons make, holding a gun inches away from a person's face; there must be a thousand Krav Maga, CQC , Judo, Aïkido or whatnot holds to get away from such position. In that scene I guess you could argue that the goon only wanted Vincent's wallet and planned to use his gun as a mere threat (it's downtown, someone could hear gunshots, he's on foot, etc.)
***** Indeed, which is why I wasn't so surprised the cheap hoods got a cheap hoods' death! A person holding a gun sideways doesn't deserve so much more IMO :p
+Leo Nidas It's not possible to rob someone from 15m away. In my mind if i was taking something out of your pocket I would have to be close enough to go in your pockets.
Leo Nidas actualy scenes like this i always have in mind one thing... killers face that kind of situation a lot and they probly can tell between a person that is really gonna kill with a person that act tough. since cruise isnt showing hes a threat the guy wont just go ahead and shoot. real killers dont usualy say ''ill kill you''
As soon as I saw his skill with a gun in Collateral, I knew he must've put in some serious time in preparation for it. It's about the only time I've seen an actor convincingly imitate the skills of a tier 1 operator.
+comanchio1976 I heard a Marines' instructor showed Val Kilmer changing clips in Michael Mann's "The Heat" shootout scene and said "if you can't change a clip as quickly as this ACTOR, you don't belong in the Marines"
That's the funny thing isn't it. People say " I can't stand Tom Cruise" but then you start rattling off his work and they go " well yea....that one was pretty great. And that one. And that one ..."
he's dedicated. but far from being one of the best. the guy does similar variations of the same character every movie. i've seen him adopt one accent in a movie, an irish one, and it was fucking awful.
he's only short by european, or more accurately Hollywood, standards. He's 5' 7" which makes you realize that some very tall people dominate Hollywood. 5' 7" is not really all that short, unless you're comparing to beefy midwesterners
Say what you will about Tom's personally life, but the guy was absolutely the perfect man for this role. He puts so much effort into his craft, it's pretty amazing.
I handled fire arms and trained in weaponless defense for 30 years in the military and as a police officer...Tom Cruise is a heck of a natural athlete the way he performs in this movie.....awesome........
All fine and well, except he wants the role of the protagonist in blockbuster films, which for the most part, don't have grey haired protagonists. Maybe, he will after a few more years. Unless, it's crucial for a role.
I absolutely love that Tom Cruise always does all of his stunts. That's so rare and it's so awesome to know when you're watching a movie that the actor is actually doing the stunts and not some stuntman throughout the movie. Major points to Tom because he has done some really risky stunts and does so much training. You can really tell that he puts all his efforts into the movies he does and the characters he plays.
because it's paced weird, has weird scene transitions, and the chemistry between cruise and fox seems extremely forced and awkward in multiple scenes, not enough characters to keep the run time interesting, not to mention the whole movie feels like it's filmed with some sort of old soap opera camera making the quality of the entire film feel pretty cheap. I think cruises gunwork and his "hey homie, is that my briefcase? " line were great, but I do not think for one second this movie is underrated. IMO if Cruise wasn't in this movie, with that one scene, nobody would talk about it.
It is an incredible movie with fantastic cinematography, acting and pacing. The casting of Fox and Cruise was brilliant. The desperation you see building slowly in Fox is perfectly shown. But it is not a movie for the masses who mostly don't have the maturity for a movie missing the usual formulaic assembly.
I thought the same thing. His background in Army Special Forces and as a PMC perhaps in South America. His study of Asian philosophy which is often pinged throughout Collateral. The character has a robust backstory.
Couldn't agree more, as is the case with a lot of Mann's characters. Imagine a prequel of Neil McCauley's (Heat) early days training as a professional thief and the time he spent in prison reading up on the zen philosophies/disciplines he seems to live his life by. The richness of detail always creates quality characters.
NO! Do NOT touch this masterpiece! Fuck this Hollywood logic where everything has to have a prequel, sequel or spinoff. Or a cinematic universe. Fuck that.
This is one of the best action films ever !!! Is realistic and has no cliches plus Tom Cruise is a bad-ass mothafucka !! The director Michael Mann is the man !!!
Look at the glowing look on his face when he talks about how they use live ammo, "it was great!". I don't care who you are, shooting in general and especially having awesome training sessions like this, is FUN.

Kevin you had to comment this after five years and I had to comment this after 7 years. Let’s see how much time does it take for the next guy to comment in this thread. Peace.
One thing I have noticed with Tom Cruise is that he is definitely building and developing quite a skill set in all the gun heavy movies he's been in after this film. Jack Reacher and MIGP come to mind. Yes, there is some really corny action sequences and stunts, but his weapons manipulation and tactics are pretty spot on.

(Obviously we all recognized the scene a half-second in.) This film had the best-executed CQB pistol scenes that had been done up to its release, Cruise absolutely crushed the role.
yeah most of the movie is very different feel, but the club scene is similarly awesome. probably the best club scene since Collateral (and maybe even better).
Sino Deutsch It's fun, but certainly not better than Collateral. The latter wins in terms of cool factor AND realism, and it bothered me how much John Wick was CGI'd. Mann's authentic gunplay is always unparalleled. And there's just so much more going on in his action scenes, emotionally and intellectually. Nothing against John Wick, but it was your run of the mill "kill everything" revenge flick. The action scenes in Collateral have more substance built beneath them.
oh i agree, i was mostly just talking about the club fight scene... probably the house fight scene too. rest of the fights or basically most of the movie (story) was fun but yeah definitely not a Mann drama.
One of Tom's most underrated/unseen roles. He killed it beyond description...so did Foxx...this movie in general is a total gem that almost no one knows about. Michael Mann is the mann!
There's a Red Bull video where to commemorate the opening of a repaved race track they film Tom Cruise doing hot laps in the Red Bull Formula racer. It seems very show-boaty, until you notice how fast Cruise is going. Then he's in the helicopter they used for filming. Not just in it, flying it. Not just flying it, he does a loop! Countless movies like Collateral, he does what others rely on stunt men for. When you see him doing it, check it out, he really is doing it.
Tom Cruise is great at what he does. His beliefs are too expensive for most of us to practice, so why should we give a shit? Watch his movies if you like them, don't if you don't.
I did a shooting course in Texas when I was literally 19yrs old and I was taught how to work sig sauer pistols, trimmed brownings & hecklers. Every day for a month was a camp. In early 2001 it was wonderful. Im Australian btw.
Michael Mann is such a truly excellent director. The films he's made over the last two decades I've been a parade of masterpieces. He doesn't get as much brand recognition as some of the pop culture blockbusters, but his aesthetic is truly a joy to experience
The ultimate Say What You Will actor. I’ve been a huge, huge fan since I was a young teen. I just turned 49 yesterday. He just seems to never slow down.
most people don't understand how truly deep this film really is. Michael Mann is one of the greatest directors of our era. arguably one of the best of all time. he's easily in my top 5
It is ridiculous that people don't give this guy the credit he deserves. He works incredibly hard, really nice guy and gifted actor. Keeps his political opinions to himself gives a 200% every movie. It's incredible how people think his mission impossible franchise is a comfort zone look at the stuff he does in that film that's not what I'd call comfort. All his cast members love him and more importantly respect him.
How do you figure? He's one of the highest paid actors, always draws a smashing box office, is loved by almost everyone in this comments section (despite his wackiness), and only gets more popular with every movie in which he stars. I'd say he absolutely gets the credit he deserves.
The only public opinion he talks about and only sometime is how much he worries about children being given so many drugs that affect the brain... He wants more of kids talking out their problems rather than taking a pill .
I agree wholeheartedly with what you said. I was lucky enough to meet Mr Cruise years ago in London. It was a purely by chance kind of thing, and he was very personable and friendly. I was a complete stranger to him but he took the time out to greet my friends and I. While I think Scientology may be out there on the fringe I don't think that places everyone who practices it on the fringe as well. I've enjoyed all his movies so far and will probably continue to
This is why I'm one of the few people who still respects Tom Cruise. Yeah, he was trained by SAS, but look at the intensity he has in this movie, and in this training clip. 2:52 is ridiculous! Look at the look! Still a great actor in my book, scientology or no scientology.
Wow, Tom Cruise is great!! Every role every part he played, he put total effort in it. He is so convincing in his roles, it seems you are watching a reality show!! He is my utmost favorite star, including Clint Eastwood. They should make a western together!! As father and son.
@TheSololobo I agree. The alley scene is perfectly done, the draw and how he fires from the hip at the first guy and then how he puts 2 roudns on the other guy's chest and one in the head. Simply magnific. Actually this scene is being used alot by shooting instructors because it serves pretty well to show something realistic and closer to the real deal. Tom cruise is badass.
Tom Cruise is truly one of the best action star in Hollywood. He did very great job in every movies especially action. I'm a fan of his since Top Gun (1986) but his work in the 2000s until nowadays that badass. Mission Impossible series, Minority Report, The Last Samurai, Collateral, Jack Reacher, Top Gun Maverick, etc. Those stuff are great.
Damn I would've loved to have been there. Tom is such a cool guy and shooting is my favorite past time, having the two of them together would be a blast
Collateral was a great movie. Asks many moral questions about good/evil and right/wrong. Night club scene was THE best and shadow of the sun/coyote scene were surreal.
At 1:05, Tom fires all those shots without blinking once. You can't see it on youtube, but on the DVD you can totally see it. He got really good at this.
Tom Cruise is incredible in this incredible film. I have to tip my hat to him, he's possibly the hardest working actor alive, still doing stunts well past his prime, still making amazing films. He's in many of my all-time-favs, including Collateral, A Few Good Men, Risky Business, Top Gun, Far and Away, Knight and Day, small role in Outsiders, and many many more (The Mission series, Maverick, Born on the 4th of July, Days of Thunder, Rainman, The Firm, Jerry McGuire...) He's just incredible. Not many other actors who have done so much... We're blessed he's worked so hard and been in so many amazing films.
One of my favorite movies, the shooting, the fighting, pure realistic! Oh and when Tom and Jamie venturing around in a cab at night, you can feel the chill.
This movie was the beginning of how actors prepare for a role. The program, the director and the actor created this well trained gunfighter that we now see in most action movies today
Man people talking about John wick, and don’t get me wrong Keanu Reeves, is Great and Trained diligent for that role with Taran Tactical, but don’t sleep on Tom Cruise Collateral was before it’s time, and still is Awesome, it’s great to see all the behind the scenes to see what is put into a movie more less a character, Great work Big Cruise 👍🏾😀😀😀
I like Tom, he has come through it all from glamour boy to a real actor who can play any part. He is one of the few proper "stars of today If you haven't seen him in "Magnolia" I can highly recommend it. He might have got an Oscar for it but everyone who is in it {and they are all fantastic} brings their own "personal best" performance to the movie, it is a staggeringly good movie lol
I love when they make the actors train so they don't look like total dopes when they are holding their weapons In the movie. Like when I watch walking dead, as much as I love it and understand they aren't playing soldiers and they are everyday civilians i still wish they looked like they had a clue how to hold and shoot a gun.
The worst was Tyler Perry in "Alex Cross" where he had to shoot a shotgun. Lord knows he didn't have much training with real guns prior to filming. www.imdb.com/title/tt1712170/mediaviewer/rm642295808
I wish Training Day had this same kind of gun training before the movie started filming, it would have made Denzel’s Character Alanzo so much more of a threat.
yeah, vincent was a brilliant character; definitely my favorite cruise performance. the scene in which he murders those two punk robbers who have no idea they've just intimidated an innocent for the last time is a classic. i know a few persian "gangsters" who pull that shit, and i sincerely hope that happens to.
You can see one of the camera assistance turn his head away in awe avoiding to see the violence of the scene. That´s great work, Sir Mr. Cruise! Anyone can say anything about his religion and all that, but he is a fu**ing perfect acting machine and when he is in his role, you better be sharp already.
The thing that I liked about the “Vincent” character is that you can tell he’s an “ex” something. Ex, Ranger, SEAL, delta-etc. I liked that the audience never really knew what kind of person he was before becoming a hit man. I liked the fact that Vincent adapted to the environment. When Vincent lost his work ups (hit list) he adapted quick and sent in a gofer to get the rest of the list. If max got killed-it was no skin off Vincent’s back- he’d move on-find another way to get the list. He keeps his amenity intact.
Many people don't give Tom Cruise the credit he is due for playing Vincent. I honestly think it was one of his best performances.
Academy award worthy.
Mission Impossible: Fallout
Totally agreed, there is a narrative out there that Tom Cruise is not a good actor. NONSENSE.
When he switches from amiable guy to something else, and then sometimes back to amiable. You realize his talent.
Last Samurai 'I'd happily kill you for free', or the Ninja attack, Collateral, Mission Impossible etc.
He should take more bad guy parts. This and Tropic Thunder always stand out to me
The "Yo Homey" scene is probably the best handgun scene ever captured on film -- speed rock/double tap to iso stance/Mozambique in about 1.5 seconds. Totally badass.
I always thought he was quite lucky the second guy had his gun stuck in his pants, otherwise he would’ve probably been shot while “working” on the first guy.
@@mihnealazar7039 that’s why he deflected the first thug’s gun towards the second guy cuz he knew he would flinch in catching friendly fire.

Tom Cruise is great at what he does. His beliefs are too expensive for most of us to practice, so why should we give a shit?
Watch his movies if you like them, don't if you don't.
Watching these fight and shooting scenes in the movie always brings me joy thank you Thomas. The original John Wick
Tom Cruise deserves and needs to be given more of those bad ass character in movies. will be pretty cool.
I've enjoyed all his movies so far and will probably continue to
Just learning Michael Mann also directed Heat (DeNiro / Pacino). I always like these two movies for the gun sounds & handling. Now I see why!
Vincent was a great Character. Tom Cruise should have been nominated for something in playing the role of Vincent.
This is why I'm one of the few people who still respects Tom Cruise. Yeah, he was trained by SAS, but look at the intensity he has in this movie, and in this training clip. 2:52 is ridiculous! Look at the look! Still a great actor in my book, scientology or no scientology.
tom cruise is an amazing actor for two reasons, A.) acting of course B.) the conviction he gives to make his characters and develop his moves.
Wow, these scenes really makes you appreciate the movie even more. As for Tom Cruise, he really grew in my eyes making this movie.
You know what'd be awesome? Tom playing a villian in John Wick 3.
Now that's something I would like to see. Wish the directors put him in future JW franchise.
It would be funny to see Tom doing all the stunts while Reeves watching him lol
He could kick Reeves ass so it might not be believable.
Katana fight! Both actors trained with katanas as well!
This guy knows what's up.
totally agree, Tom was so focused throughout that Movie.
He's got his Nathan Algren beard/hair going on.
"A-duuu-gren"
Those stuff are great.
and Tropic Thunder !
Tom Cruise and Keanu Reeves are the true certified badasses of Hollywood. Forget Hobbs and Shaw. Respect!
No respect for a member of a criminal cult group
Tom cruise and Keanu reeves are nasty with the guns 🔥🔥🔥
I have so many reasons to dislike him, but I watch every single movie. Damn it, he's just good.
Shooting from the hip... I love it, awesome close combat skills.
Solid Snake
they need to make that happen!
That. Would. Be. Awesome.
The only actor I'd want to see play snake. Plus he'd get to shoot another HK
I came back to after I saw they casted Oscar Isaac for the role this week SMH 🤦♂️
A big THANK YOU for this upload mate,i was just reading about this and as i dont own the dvd with the extras was gutted to have missed it,Your a star!
Collaterals alley scene where Tom defends himself and neutralizes 2 threats is one of the best examples of a defensive gun fighter.
this is one of my fav movies of all time. such a masterpiece.
His personal life may be a bit of a mess but there's no denying, Tom Cruise is one of the greatest actors of our day.
A mess compare to whom? I see more messed up lives in the news from average people.
I love watching behind the scenes to movies like this; you learn a whole lot.
At 1:05, Tom fires all those shots without blinking once. You can't see it on youtube, but on the DVD you can totally see it. He got really good at this.
1:05
Tom Cruise's acting at his best: A few Good Men and Collateral
One of my favorite movies, the shooting, the fighting, pure realistic!
Oh and when Tom and Jamie venturing around in a cab at night, you can feel the chill.
holy shit Tom Cruise is deadly
This movie was the beginning of how actors prepare for a role. The program, the director and the actor created this well trained gunfighter that we now see in most action movies today
John Wick is like being in The Matrix or a video game. Collateral definitely feels more real. Both entertaining, but not really comparable.
I love this movie, and this was really cool to see. His dedication to the character is great to see. He really made Vincent credible.
You could tell he trained well for the movie, most of his shooting form is pretty accurate.
Tom Cruise's dedication to movies makes him the very great actor that he is today
This never occurred to me, now I want nothing else in this world but to see Metal Gear: Solid with Tom Cruise
Mick Gould, ex special forces and Welsh. What more do you need...
Jim Lahey he did Miami vice and heat
Andy Mcnab assisted on heat also
Yeah Mick is ex- SAS.
I like Tom, he has come through it all from glamour boy to a real actor who can play any part. He is one of the few proper "stars of today
If you haven't seen him in "Magnolia" I can highly recommend it. He might have got an Oscar for it but everyone who is in it {and they are all fantastic} brings their own "personal best" performance to the movie, it is a staggeringly good movie lol
IMO the character vincent was a forerunner for john wick.we need a collateral 2.
That was an awesome movie, one of my favorites for sure. Very intense flick
Can we just acknowledge that Tom Cruise is fucking awesome.
Im so sure that tom cruise can do all that for real
the way he moves and shoots in the movie is simply ruthless the best shooting i have seen
seeing tom cruise in a beany and beard definatly makes me think he would be a good actor for solid snake :) thums up if you think so!
I came back to this after I saw they casted Oscar Isaac for the role this week SMH 🤦♂️
@@juniorcruz7942 Yeah bad casting there.
Persian what is this ancient times? xD
You can see one of the camera assistance turn his head away in awe avoiding to see the violence of the scene. That´s great work, Sir Mr. Cruise! Anyone can say anything about his religion and all that, but he is a fu**ing perfect acting machine and when he is in his role, you better be sharp already.
British SAS trained him, no surprise. The best in the world train the best.
Man I gotta watch this again sometime.
He keeps his amenity intact.
one of my most favorite movie
The whole training thing says "Proto-John Wick" to me.
Not a Cruise fan. This is the only movie of his I own. His best acting yet.
Trust me this is the man that could beat the shit out of you.
That one scene in the alley.. the most underrated scene in movie history
