Couldn't pinpoint Delta from Seals, but I could tell the servicemen from "contractors", and Feds. The way they treated her in the beginning was on point, from recruiting her, to her first deployment and keeping her distant. Tactics brought back a lot of memories.
They're not. You can basically become a SEAL immediately with hardly any time in service. Delta often takes years, and most Delta operators spent time in either the Rangers, Special Forces or both. I'd rather have a Delta guy with experience than a SEAL who thinks they're hot shit but haven't been in real shit.
Absolutely love the suspense and buildup in Sicario. They purposefully left out key information for the audience to ponder. Very reminiscent to Silence of the Lambs.
Taylor Sheridan wrote both movies as well as several other great action movies and TV of recent years. He also was a character on Sons of Anarchy, so his gun handling antecedents are well developed. It appears he appreciates good gun handling technique and demands the realism. Another well done episode by you and your crew. Thanks.

If you look really close we switch weapons out the entire movie. I worked on it as one of the Delta guys, when we are kitting up at the trucks to go into the tunnels we have Colt Commandos with Magpul furniture on it but when we are in the tunnels actually shooting we have M-4s. We mentioned it to the prop guys but they didn't care, they gave us plate carriers that were all set up exactly alike. We started moving pouches around and they couldn't understand why we wanted to personalize it.
Man, I love these movie analysis clips! That traffic shootout at the border is one of my favorite movie gunfights, despite the mistakes. Keep it up, LAV!
Ya me too. It is so awesome because its meta is far greater than the sum of its parts -- which really can be said about the whole movie; a picture is worth 1000 words but each scene of Sicario is worth an entire book.
First of all - how can you dislike this video? Larry has a good resume/CV. Second - I love that he picked up on the nuances of SEALs advising the filmmakers versus Delta.
Hope so, too. Those movies got a lot of grit that a lot of modern filmmakers seem to fail to balance properly. Usually it's either too sanitized or overdone, but these were goldilocks in that regard
In the movie, the subtitle translation to "In peace, in peace..." is actually an error. Benicio is not saying "En paz, en paz...", which would actually translate to what the subtitles say. What he's saying is "Compas, compas ... suelta la pistola" which can be translated as "Guys, guys ... put down the gun".
I was just rewatching this video and thought about a comment Larry made. I agree that the correct way of handling her M4 would be to have it on "Safe" until she made the decision to fire and would manipulate the selector at that time, which is the way Larry teaches in his classes (I've had the privilege of training and hosting him multiple times). But I've also trained with many other instructors, some outstanding, some good, and two absolutely horrible. One of the two pathetically incompetent instructors was a retired ATF agent who said he was an ATF SRT (or whatever they call their SWAT teams) team leader in NYC and conducted raids on Jamaican gangs. In his carbine class he didn't teach reloading your carbine at all. He said it absolutely never happens under any situation and you always just transition to your sidearm, which I do agree that in CQB situations is the correct response to your carbine going down. But according to him you reload your carbine when you are back in the van on your way to the next target! But what this ATF "Team Leader" taught that pertains to the selector comment is that your carbine "comes off safe and goes onto auto/burst two blocks before you hit the target" and doesn't get put back on safe until the scene is secure, you pass the scene off to the investigators and you are have hit that magical 2 blocks away from the scene while on your way to the next target! It sure must be nice to know exactly when a gunfight will kick off, but the whole "this is my safety" BS in CQB is beyond dangerous. He also taught in class that everyone has negligent discharges, and you have to practice good muzzle discipline so nobody gets hit. I agree that a carbine should be on safe until the decision to fire is made, but if the FBI HRT team in the movie had a leader like the ATF team leader I took that class with, she would have had her M4 on auto! That class was a waste of money.
I remember reading Donavans character was definitely based on Mike Vinning. Specifically the pic of him in civies walking a VIP from a helicopter to a vehicle.
Always wished Jeffrey Donovan would’ve gotten more leading roles, loved Burn Notice as a kid and couldn’t understand why he never got his moment🤷♂️...
I think these movies and Fargo show he’s a much better character actor, he’s surprisingly good in these weirdly comedic roles. I do think if he was cast as a lead in a comedy or action comedy he’d be great
I love your take on this as other ex-military personnel have reviewed this movie's portrayal of police/military tactics and equipment as very poor. As a civilian I'm glad to see another experienced pair of eyes on this movie. Thanks!
My name is Michael Westen. I used to be a spy, until.. “You’ve got a burn notice on you- you’re blacklisted.” When you’re burned, you’ve got nothing: no cash, no credit, no job history, you’re stuck in whatever city they decide to dump you in. “Where am I?” “Miami.” You do whatever work comes your way, you rely on anyone who’s still talking to you. A trigger happy girlfriend... “Should we shoot them?” An old friend who used to inform on you to the FBI.. “Y’know spies- buncha’ bitchy little girls!” Family too, if you’re desperate.. “Somebody needs your help, Michael..” And a down and out spy you helped out on the way.. “That’s how we do it people!” Bottom line, as long as you’re burned- you’re not going anywhere.
Sicario is cinematic masterpiece the tension the storytelling there are so many elements done masterfully and on top of that having realistic gun fighting is a very rare combo
Michael was found out to be alive and well by the CIA. Due to him taking down James and his whole organization, he was given yet another reprieve for the CIA as long as he went back and worked for them...again. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I've watched, 1 & 2 over and over. My son in law is a writer and director and I think he told me 3 is finished but I think he's been saying that for a long time. I love Josh Brolin walking around in flip flops. Cinematography is superb and its the same guys the Cohen Brothers use.
He said full auto is rarely used in CQB, yet various other sources ay it *is* one if the few times when it’s used. The SAS in the London embassy siege used full auto on their MP5’s to empty mags into some of the terrorists.
Nothing short of outstanding Sir. Exceptional critique. Absolutely exceptional, not to mention a great pick on the movie. BCGs ! Hell ya. That sure does bring up some memories.
Late reply: Back in 2011 I worked on set of Burn Notice. It was the episode "Better Halves" I was standing right by Jeffrey Donavan as he practiced with his firearms before shoot. I will never forget getting filmed as I exited an suv as a Russian Thug while seeing the cast of this show observing me. I got my 15 minutes of fame on my favorite show. I'll never forget that.
Denis Villeneuve is really good at laying the seeds for dread, and just ratcheting it up bit, by bit, by bit...until it finally explodes (in violence, a revelation, or something else).
I was impressed with myself when I noticed the bolt locked to the rear, while watching this movie. Larry has to point out his front sight post is missing lol
The weapon shot is such a randomly authentic thing. It's not something you really consider when doing training normally, but when we used simunition the amount of weapon and hand impacts was shocking.
It's great to hear you critique that movie. I really love all of the sicario movies my past has caught up with me. It's great to have someone who is a world-renowned professional explain.
I was always under the impression that season 1 had Chris Ryan and his mates consulting, while every season from then on was full on Skinemax. Lots of explosions, tits, car chases and guns. Not that I'm complaining, that has it's place too. The last couple of seasons seems like they lost their nerve though.

It's kind of old by now but Tears of the Sun would be a good movie to review. I know they had a retired SEAL as their military advisor. And although they were close, our tactics in the army were a bit different. I'd like to know your thoughts on that movie.
Larry, I want to comment on the first sequence where Emily Blunt and her FBI SWAT team are clearing the drug house. My opinion is from the perspective of a thirty-four year police officer and LE instructor in Los Angeles County. I agree that this is a great film but Blunt and her partner failed to act effectively as a team and used poor tactics when entering the second room. In short, Blunt's character essentially cleared the entire room by herself while her partner hesitated outside the doorway threshold. This gave the suspect armed with the shotgun the complete advantage. If he hadn't hesitated he would have surely killed her. While still in the hallway, Blunt's character crossed over to the far side of the closed bedroom door, positioning herself on the hinged side of the inward opening door and across the entrance from her partner. There are a couple of different methods that they could have used but regardless, she and her partner should have entered the room simultaneously and each should have been responsible for one of the two "hard-corners." This mistake was compounded by the fact that they didn't push the door open all the way, which blocked their view to the right and caused Blunt's character to penetrate too deeply into the center of the room. Entering the room alone, Blunt cleared the left hard-corner and then performed a wide, sweeping buttonhook maneuver, turning 180 degrees. Her weapon's muzzle was the last thing to reach the second (right) hard-corner, where the cartel member was already pointing his shotgun at her. I know that in the scene she dropped to the floor to avoid being shot but in the real world that probably wouldn't have been as effective. That's just my opinion for whatever it's worth. Thanks for doing these film reviews Larry. They're great.
Not only this, but she also sort of failed to clear where the gunman was, from what I've seen of CQB clears from DEVGRU level guys, she should've immediately charged that corner rather than going into a section she knew to be clear
Larry, the Navy Seal film called Act of Valor would be a great film for you to breakdown on their tactics, techniques and procedures especially the Navy Seal casts are real Navy Seals

Couldn't pinpoint Delta from Seals, but I could tell the servicemen from "contractors", and Feds. The way they treated her in the beginning was on point, from recruiting her, to her first deployment and keeping her distant. Tactics brought back a lot of memories.
The fact that you have to look for and "nitpick" shows what a good movie this was.
I love how this whole thing was a secondary low key Delta on SEAL burn lol.
well everybody and their grandmother knows Seals are better than Delta
They're not. You can basically become a SEAL immediately with hardly any time in service. Delta often takes years, and most Delta operators spent time in either the Rangers, Special Forces or both. I'd rather have a Delta guy with experience than a SEAL who thinks they're hot shit but haven't been in real shit.
In the military, isn’t Delta selection more prestigious? Not talking about the general public’s perception.
The Cheat Not disagreeing but correct me if I’m wrong, aren’t Rangers part of SF? Was the term you were thinking of Special Operations?
supersevenn you mean the uneducated? Stop. Delta is the apex
Yes! This is without a doubt one of my favorite movies of all time. Absolutely phenomenal movie.
Cats was better
Neither one can hold a candle to Adam Sandler's Jack And Jill.
@@BurtSampson dayum, you invoke the masterpiece. I stand down, i stand down.
The examination of the Seals vs Delta is amazing, awesome to see a Delta operator discussing such minute yet distinct points.
Thanks.
OlatheStan Walker I was quite surprised that Taylor Sheridan wrote both the excellent movie that was Sicario, and the hot mess of a misfire that was Sicario 2.
THANK YOU FOR DOING SICARIO. GOD BLESS LARRY.
Hey Larry, in the tunnels, when they are using the FLIR, you can see the shape of a beretta 92 in the safariland drop leg holster of the delta operator
Famous quote by the delta leader after the tunnel scene,” just lay down and let it happen”
@@Ironlegiontraining
Very cool. You should get yourself credited on IMDB they only have a handful of the Delta guys on there.
Roger Deakins' cinematography is gorgeous regardless of on-screen tactics.
First of all - how can you dislike this video? Larry has a good resume/CV. Second - I love that he picked up on the nuances of SEALs advising the filmmakers versus Delta.
I love this movie, I hope there's a Sicario 3
Oh yeh, the Sicario mentors his new cartel/us side gangmember minion.
What he's saying is "Compas, compas ... suelta la pistola" which can be translated as "Guys, guys ... put down the gun".
i know very little Spanish and even to me that sounded wrong when I would watch that scene. Good eye (or ear) and translation^
I thought it was "Con paz, con paz"
Compas i thought meant like paisanos
Yeah I heard "con paz, con paz" as well.
Definitely "compas".
Absolutely love this movie and the soundtrack was perfect for building the tension.
Sicario 2 needs an episode. When Del Toro shoots the lawyer and says “Adios”
Do "Zero Dark Thirty" next!
I concur
That movie is a disaster. The only thing particularly accurate, was the use of torture to 'train' the subject, not to extract unknown information.
I agree, do Zero Dark Thirty next!
Besides the weapon handling, I'd like to hear Larry's take on the blast and noise of shooting in enclosed spaces. Houses, tunnels, vehicles.
Brutal.
Hell no

Always wished Jeffrey Donovan would’ve gotten more leading roles, loved Burn Notice as a kid and couldn’t understand why he never got his moment🤷♂️...
He's getting his moments now.
@@dragonpundit.6443 He had a DUI but I'm not seeing anything like you're saying
I think these movies and Fargo show he’s a much better character actor, he’s surprisingly good in these weirdly comedic roles. I do think if he was cast as a lead in a comedy or action comedy he’d be great
I love your take on this as other ex-military personnel have reviewed this movie's portrayal of police/military tactics and equipment as very poor. As a civilian I'm glad to see another experienced pair of eyes on this movie. Thanks!
Jeffrey Donovan's character would be a great BBQ host. Everyone gets a second helping.
had that army dad vibe for sure, loved his character
I always thought Jeffery Donovan's character was a nice tie in to "burn notice"
Former USA-SF turned spook.
Holy shit! That’s who he is?! I can totally see it now. He looked so familiar.
This could totally be a prequel to Burn Notice!!!!!
Alot of Special Activities Division of CIA are former/current delta and seal operators.
Yeah they like tried to make it have continuity with Burn Notice show that's awesome.
My name is Michael Westen. I used to be a spy, until..
“You’ve got a burn notice on you- you’re blacklisted.”
When you’re burned, you’ve got nothing: no cash, no credit, no job history, you’re stuck in whatever city they decide to dump you in.
“Where am I?” “Miami.”
You do whatever work comes your way, you rely on anyone who’s still talking to you.
A trigger happy girlfriend...
“Should we shoot them?”
An old friend who used to inform on you to the FBI..
“Y’know spies- buncha’ bitchy little girls!”
Family too, if you’re desperate..
“Somebody needs your help, Michael..”
And a down and out spy you helped out on the way..
“That’s how we do it people!”
Bottom line, as long as you’re burned- you’re not going anywhere.
Sicario is cinematic masterpiece the tension the storytelling there are so many elements done masterfully and on top of that having realistic gun fighting is a very rare combo
0:40 “My name is Michael Weston. I used to be a spy...”
Michael was found out to be alive and well by the CIA. Due to him taking down James and his whole organization, he was given yet another reprieve for the CIA as long as he went back and worked for them...again. 🤣🤣🤣🤣

@Englewood Frank21 no lie you literally just repeated what he said...
@@lacompf571 No shit. Haha. Shootout in Den is awesome.
Blunt said she’s always on full auto and her finger is her safety
He said full auto is rarely used in CQB, yet various other sources ay it *is* one if the few times when it’s used. The SAS in the London embassy siege used full auto on their MP5’s to empty mags into some of the terrorists.
Great job. Do "Den of Thieves" just like how you did this breakdown!
YES the weapon handling in Den of Thieves was really good.

"Pass me the SAW", best line of the movie.
The dinner with Alejandro was an excellent example of this. Del Toro was superb, but the other actors did an excellent job in selling the dread

Good stuff. People like you are the reason why America is great!
Vining looks like the Mr. Rogers of death. I could absolutely see him taking down a sentry while whispering "Well hi there neighbour."
To say „neighbour” he must’ve been SAS operator.

Thanks Larry, excellent! I trained with you and SMPD detectives 12+ years ago at Burro Canyon. You gave me your Vickers hat. 🙂
Larry you must do Strike Back, the older ones. That I thought was on point, before it got to hollywooded
You mean the show where everyone has invisible chest radio PTTs? Love it.
That show, especially the early seasons was absolutely so solid in its gunplay. If I remember correct they had some solid SAS advisors.
Loved those earlier series :) "Count of three." - "Wait, on three, or after three?"
Yep, that would be cool
Benicio is brilliant in this movie. Brolin is great. I thought it was somewhat genuine. Especially with Brolin's character.

Not only this, but she also sort of failed to clear where the gunman was, from what I've seen of CQB clears from DEVGRU level guys, she should've immediately charged that corner rather than going into a section she knew to be clear
didn't realize this was Villeneuve, no wonder its so much better than Day of Soldado.
Larry, the Navy Seal film called Act of Valor would be a great film for you to breakdown on their tactics, techniques and procedures especially the Navy Seal casts are real Navy Seals

@@ldreese33 When the SWCC boats come in and just LIGHT UP the trucks!!! - so good
and I believe in "the making of" they mention that is live-fire (of course the trucks are empty for the angle/shot). The speed and sound of those rounds.... would make the strongest guys dive for cover.
That whole 'rescue the doctor/agent' scene is great. Enter by water, clear the house, kick out the window to drive into the river, and the SWCC bringing the major smackdown...! Great. But THAT makes it seem like a situation best fitting SEALS (because of the river) more than any other team.

A few years or so ago, one of the local radio stations was interviewing an attendee at the U.S. Border Patrol members convention in Wash D.C.
He was asked about how true to life "Sicario" was to the reality on our southern border.
The reply... "About 90%" true to life.

What really goes on at the border is not being told to the American public.
