You may not be able to find it, but anyone reading this should watch Waterloo 1970 - with Christopher Plummer and Rod Steiger it’s not perfect but almost and one of the most underrated and cult history / war films out there
and they won't.... now it's all about inclusivity and minority films. The days of the Hollywood epic are dead. Top Gun Maverick brought everyone back to the movies yet it didn't win Best Picture
My favourite scene in Gladiator 01:30 is when Maximus walks along trench and the admiration his men have for him is the best movie scene of what it is to be a respected leader!
Man, i never understood the beauty of this opening when watching as a kid. the sudden cut from him walking through a warm place touching the wheat to the windy, cold, germania showing maximus' deep yearning for home, but also foreshadows that his ultimate return to peace and family will only come through death, because in the ending we see it's actually the elysium. Also i love him watching the bird fly away. he is bound by duty, honor, and the expectations placed on him as a general, where the bird embodies for the liberty he craves. what a shame ridley could not recreate this magic with the sequel.
The first 30 seconds are incredible. Really draws the audience in straight away. It’s just haunting with the lady’s vocals in the background and him brushing his hand in the field of wheat like in a dream.
This is what makes me value this movie - 00:42 - because think of this. He's not excited about whats coming. Hes confronting the very real possibility of dying in the next few minutes. Hes remembering his family with sadness that he may not see them again. And yet, something catches his eye. A bird. The bird is beautiful and fragile and simple. It brings him a fleeting moment of pleasure about the beauty of the world before heading into the hell of battle. Such a unique brief moment.
excellent comment, gladiator goes beyond battle scenes, a general with all the power at his fingertips, he could be emperor of Rome, but he just wanted to return to his family, and continue having a simple life. a masterpiece, sublime
It represents stoicism. Living in the moment in harmony with nature. The fighting and organisation is all man made, but the stoic loves nature for it's simplicity and perfection.
I never knew until I read your post and then heard it in the background. Thanks for the information. Zulu is one of my favourite films, along with The Great Escape and The Day Of The Jackal.
Saw the sequel and it makes me only cherish scenes like this even more! They tried to match the "epic" scale of this battle in the sequel, but it came nothing close to it. In the 3 minutes you have with Maximus before the battle, you got so much more taken away from that than the few you got with Lucius other than he had a wife and that's it. Here in the three minutes, you see how much his misses his home, him cherishing the "peace" like a bird flying away before the eve of battle, how the soldiers respect him, showing command & calmness with his top generals before the battle, and him being fully cognizant of the situation once he hears the Germanic tribes shouting once they see the messenger's horse coming back.
The admiration and respect from his legion is unmatchable. And I'm pretty sure it is deserved and I'm pretty sure a General like this would know each and every soldier there.
I just hit Play and immediately when the Score starts playing I get goosebumps on my whole body. Thats the moment you realize what a masterpiece this Movie really is.
Great film. I always love that little bit where he sees that little robin and smiles to himself. A little bit of beauty and humility, before the carnage and madness to come. ❤
When I hear this music, I think of my US Navy service. I think of the men I'm honored to call friends and brothers. Above all, I remember Captain Jerry O'Donnell. The most honorable man I met and served with in my life. Honor, Courage, Commitment. HOOYAAAH!!!
Oh look guys, they are actual on location, hundreds of extras, practical effects, real acting. Imagine. This would be done in a studio behind a greenscreen if it was made today.
Possibly greatest character introduction in history, almost mute. Watching soldiers attention, them brightening up upon Maximus' approach - that gesture 1:46-1:49 tells you everything about character.
02:56 the phrase that the barbarian says at that moment, for a Portuguese speaker like me, sounds like this: "É assim que meu fusca anda, é assim que ele vai parar" (This is how my Volkswagen Beetle moves, this is how it will stop). Hahahaha
I legitimately have just copied and pasted this for the 5th time in the last 10 minutes. because once again, it's nonstop with you people..... There is quite literally a film called Gladiator 2 in theaters, as I speak. Love the generic comments in every comment section of movies who most enjoyed. Every single fucking one is full of "They don't make movies like this anymore," or "I wish there were movies this good, but since "woke Hollywood democrats....." and shit like that You commented that for a single reason....Likes. That's all. You know it, and I know it Edit: That wasn't a political statement on my part, whatsoever. It's nothing more or less than a type of comment I've seen over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.....and it's always said regarding a film that has absolutely no political undertones, of any kind.

Black Panther coronation!
T-34 village attack scene
The whole opening battle mate :)
zny from Alitta Battle Angel would be great!

It's all about $$$$$$$. They don't care about anything else.
The new one is pretty decent

Yeah same
back then most if you’re charismatic and generous enough, legions would be way more loyal to a general than to the state
that's what players on xbox live call me
They would follow him to hell n back
I envy the kids about to watch this for the first time.
A masterpiece of a film and music that'll be with you the rest of your life
You know one of regrets? They re-released this 2 months ago at the big screen, and I was too lazy to go travel. Hopefully again, they will release.
Just watched it for the first time at 27 yrs old. Best movie I have ever seen besides, of corse, The Godfather.
As a Millenial, that was a goosebump even watching from crappy telesynch VHS
Very spectacal, enigmatic, and excitement

Indeed a masterpiece
The real shame is that he attempted to. i legit thought it was a joke when i first about gladiator 2. Even by Hollywood standards, that was shocking.
A hardened warrior whose mutilated thousands on the battlefield but finds the time to admire a beautiful tiny bird. Epic scene.
Ele sentiu o pouco da casa dele.
youd be surprised how much war can make soldiers apreciate the little things
Masterpiece......

Scott used it as a sort of reference to Zulu as he enjoys that film too. Not completely accurate but Zulu is good.
"Would you Quintus? Would I?"
Thank you for uploading this masterful openning!
What we do in life , echos in eternity, great film
MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE
Same it's just so good
Gladiator and Braveheart are hands down the best movies. Best story, best score, etc. Dont even think James Cameron could do better. Timeless!!!
Crowes little smile at the bird and then "game on face" is just brilliant!
The dog in the opening scene had more character than the actors in Gladiator 2.
Hahaha too right man 😂
eh so you got fooled and watched this movie? It was a scam from the very first moment its trailer arrived. glad that i didnt watch it
Big facts
I thought denzels character was good
Greatest film ever it was never going to be in the same league
