  • Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley put on a show at The Spectrum. Jordan scores 52 (24/29 FG!!!!), while Sir Charles puts up 42 points (18/25 FG!!!!). Not like these days when some of these stars score 30 by attempting 30 shots. November 16, 1988.

    I know Jordan was the man, but Barkley was easily the second best player in the L from 89 to 93 or 94. Tremendous talent that will never be duplicated. No more 6'5" PFs that DOMINATE and can jump out of the gym like that. Plays 7-2, but looks 6-4.

      I don’t think that’s true. Magic won the MVP in 89 and 90. In 89 he had 17 triple doubles. That’s insane. I don’t see how anyone can say Barkley was easily better than him.

    Great game!!! Jordan 24/29 FG was awesome, and Barkley could score more than 42 if he had not got rest by the rest of 4th quarter (he scored the 42th point at 9:13 in the 4th quarter), due to the advantage of 76'ers in the game.

    Great memories! I was 16 years old. I was at this game with my father and brother. After the game we stood outside the Spectrum and got autographs from Mo Cheeks and Dr. J. Julius had just retired the year before but attended this game. It was a thrill meeting my childhood sports hero. During this era, the NBA was truly at its peak. Jordan and Barkley were unstoppable back then. It was a great time to be a fan!

    how about the other guy featured in this video, who scored 42 on 18 FGM. barkley led the league in true shooting percentage for 4 years in a row and posted a TS% over .600 7 times. in those years he was dropping 25 ppg and was among the league leaders in both offensive and total rebounds. it wasn't all putbacks. he had a solid jumper and could beat you off the dribble or running fast breaks in transition. good defender, great passer.
    his ten best years could easily be top 3 all time

      barry jb - exactly. In his prime, he was the best offensive PF in history. So much revisionist history today and kids think Chuck was nobody because he didn't win a championship. Meanwhile, he was perhaps the second best offensive player in the NBA next to MJ for at least a few years in the early 90's. Chuck's mistake was playing in the NBA during the MJ era and this is true for so many superstars who were robbed of a championship because of MJ. And make no mistake, Chuck was great in the big moments. He played better in the playoffs.

      Barkley was the most offensively gifted 4 I've ever seen.
      When he was in Phoenix, he would basically play a point-power forward. There was no one who could guard him.
      And his ability to anticipate rebounds was matched only by Dennis Rodman.

    A lot of HOFs during the MJ era were underrated as most didnt get a ring until MJ was retired. I mean look at Olajuwon. One of the all time great centers in the history of the game and didnt get a ring until MJ retired. Same with D Robinson & Tim Duncan. Malone Stockton. The list of ringless HOFs because of MJ is amazing. Then to do what he did at age 38-40 on the Wizards vs this new generation is just jaw dropping. 50pts at age 40?! Gamers would scream HACKS!!!!

    mj is still the gold standard for athleticism in my opinion too, kinda like deion sanders in football. but what i was alluding too was, just look at when he scored 63 on boston, there was no rueben patterson, or bruce bowen, mario elie, somebody who would at least be in the same frame as him when he scored. it was like he was kicking ass down at the ymca. i haven't seen a player as agile as mj at 6'6'' but there have been several that have been as explosive

    MJ is just such a great basketball player, it's amazing. This guy has scored so many poitns in less than 1qtr just to come back and carry his team to a win or near come back win. Talking about 19pts in 6mins. 15 pts in 5mins, 22 points in a qrtr, etc. And some of those games were playoff games, not reg season games vs weak defenses. Imagine if MJ actually went full throttle for an entire game. Then ridic fg%s with some even near 90% in field goals. How man HOFs didnt get a ring cus of this guy?!

      After game 1 of the '92 Finals where he made six 3-pointers in a half, MJ said that he didn't want to excel at long distance shooting b/c he found himself just waiting outside for the ball. He preferred to look for high percentage shots near the basket and it worked very well for his efficiency.

    • @jp3813
      @jp3813 9 лет назад +1

      gary bush Up until '91, MJ went through several experimentations w/ his game. '85 was all about adjusting to the pros. '86 was a setback due to his broken foot. '87 was his offensive peak w/ 37.1 ppg. '88 was his defensive peak w/ 3.2 spg & 1.6 bpg. '89 was his triple-double peak w/ 8 rpg & 8 apg (even LeBron hasn't reached those combination of numbers yet). And '90 was when he incorporated the long range w/ 3 attempts per game on .376 shooting from behind the arc (he barely attempted one a game in the seasons before that). By comparison, Kobe shot a higher percentage than that only once w/ 4 attempts per game on .383 shooting (MJ did peak in '96 on .427 shooting, but that was one of the few years when the arc was shortened). In other words, he could've been any kind of player he wanted to be. But once he found the winning recipe, he stuck w/ that one style the rest of the way to win championships. Though it's critical to note that MJ's career averages do increase in the playoffs.
