NBA Greatest Duels: Charles Barkley vs Patrick Ewing (1990)

  • One of the greatest NBA regular season games ever. Charles Barkley and Patrick Ewing with a fantastic duel in MSG. A lot of trash talking, hard fouls, great dunks, great defense (Mark Jackson block on Charles Barkley is something to see) and even better offense; 90's basketball at its best.
    Charles Barkley: 39 points, 15 rebounds (11 offensive), 3 assists, 12/23 FG.
Patrick Ewing: 37 points, 19 rebounds, 9 blocks, 17/24 FG.
In the first quarter, Ewing was twice knocked to the floor by the Sixers' Charles Barkley, and with 7:18 remaining in the period, Barkley was assessed a technical and injured Knick Charles Oakley was ejected after coming out on the floor during a brief Ewing-Barkley fight.
"I thought he (Ewing) cheap-shotted me a couple of times," Barkley said. ''I'm not going to let anyone do that to me."
In that same period, a fan in an end-court seat harassed Barkley to a point where Barkley tossed some liquid in the fan's direction.
And then Barkley reminded everyone that the Knicks were, in fact, still in third place.
"Don't make them out to be champions," he said. "We don't have to worry about facing them again, because if you know anything about sports, you know they won't get by Boston in the first round (of the playoffs)." (Knicks won the first round playoff series 3-2 after being down 2-0 against Boston and then lost to the eventual champions Pistons 4-1)
Knicks won this phenomenal game 114:104.

Ewing displaying his whole repertoir of moves here, fantastic. A lot of people only remember the Ewing from the mid to late 90s, when he was slowed down by injuries and age. But at his prime, late 80s, early 90s, he was a monster. He had power, speed, quickness, hops, and great skill.
And that Barkley, what a freak of nature. He was awesome.
Another great upload, Larry. Thanks a lot.

saturndual32 , These guys were both titans. Ewing played with bad knees his whole career though. 89-91 was his peak. He had to rely increasingly on his fadeaway after that. Barkley started having back problems just a couple years after this.

When I had a cable subscription which included MSG Network, these games were electric! Believe it or not, MSG was at best packed at 50% or up to 75% capacity prior to Ewing playing for the Knicks. MSG started to go crazy with packed crowds once HC Rick Pitino orchestrated some excitement at the Garden. It's too bad Ewing didn't have that consistent 2nd guy at his side during his prime years. I revered early to mid-nineties Patrick. But late 1980's Patrick was super exciting at the MSG. The crowd started going nuts inside that building. Good memories.
Fans also must appreciate the 1980's version of Charles Barkley. He was insanely electric too. Those Knicks vs Sixers rivalries were off the chain. It's also too bad that Barkley's Sixers days also had bad luck. Andrew Toney ended his career sooner than predicted with a foot injury. The leadership of the Sixers was officially gone once Dr. J retired. No one, not even Sir Charles was able to fill that void. In all fairness, Sixers management did not help Barkley at all with good players

These old games almost bring a tear to my eye. I used to watch every single play and I didn't get up until commercials. These guys wanted to play AGAINST the best and beat the best. Now, these new guys want to play with each other. Now, I have the games on, but don't watch it as intensely as I used to. You can't touch each other and with all of the flopping has severely watered down the game.

Barkley was the 1st Lebron. People dont realize how good Barkley was handling the ball on the fast break and finishing. Chuck Daly once told Barkley he was the 2nd best player he ever saw. Barkley asked him who was the 1st as a joke. Of course Jordan was, but barkley would have the same impact on a game as Jordan on many nights.

    • @elchapo6452
      @elchapo6452 7 лет назад +3

Barkley would have easily won a few rings during his prime if he didn't play against the G.O.A.T. People bringing up he has zero rings forget that Jordan stopped many great players from getting a ring. If Barkley came the year before he got drafted he would have a ring. If he played in the 2000's he would've had a ring. The 80's you had the Lakers, Celtics and the Pistons dominating and most part of 90's the bulls were dominating... so Barkley was in his prime fighting better teams with HOF players when Barkley didn't play with no HOF players.

It doesn't matter if he has a ring or not either. Look who he was playing then! Look how many more teams there are now and how many really good players are going to come away with no ring because the talent is spread so thin.
