He was a PF at only 6'5" during an era when size was still everything. It's a testament to Barkley's skills that he lasted 16 years in the league with 11 All-Star appearances during _that_ era as a 6'5" PF.
Was always amazed at how a guy that size had so much bounce off a stand-still underneath the rim. He'd go up, grab the board over a 7 footer, and then immediately bounce right back up and dunk on the guy. It was unreal.

Shaq was athletic too in his prime. Barkley is all time great but u swap Shaq for Barkley on that Phoenix team that lost to the bulls and they may have a title. Shaq was the second most dominant player of this era behind LeBron
@@rcfresh4345 Yeah, he was. But Barkley and variety and skills. Could step out and shoot the J, kick it out for easier shots and was at least a fair FT shooter. He missed games late in his career. Shaq missed many games most of his career.
I saw Barkley once in an exhibition game in Munich, Germany against a good German team. It was borderline funny how he had his way with them. He positioned himself at the low block and methodically worked his way to the rim. Again and again and again. There was absolutely nothing the defence could do to stop him. Never saw such combination of brute strength and finesse footwork.
Charles was great, this era of the NBA was incredible. There was so many great players Charles gets over looked. I hate to say this, but had he been 6’9” or taller we might be considering him as a top 5-10 player of all time. One of my favorite players of all time.

When I got Lakers vs. Celtics for my Genesis, I loved picking the Sixers, because only Barkley had this unstoppable dunk called the Gorilla Slam. No one could block it, no step needed, it just exploded onto the rim. Ahh the 90's!

He is my favorite player!. Insane athleticism, best PF to run the ball ever, extremely good mid-range shooter. Im biased, but for me he is in my top 10 greatest ever. Despite never winning a ring.
Luke Wenberg Hell yeah just think of all the Barkley teams they could put on there I'm not really old enough to remember him from his Philly days but I remember everything from Phoenix on up they should put the 93 Suns on there of course, the 95 Suns with the black jersey and the 97 Rockets with him, Hakeem and Drexler
He was one of those guys that you play a pickup game against, overweight, but was strong and fast. You're looking at yourself like I'm skinny or lean and I'm running out of breath. He was a beast. For someone who was in the 6' 5" range, rebounding and putting back missed shots like he was a power forward/center. And this was a time when the NBA was not undersized. Teams actually had true centers and true power forwards!
You’re forgetting maybe the most intriguing part of his game; he was able to run the fast break after a board and either score or make the pass after collapsing the D. Today, a guy like Draymond Green gets a lot of credit for doing that, but Barkley was maybe the best big ever in this respect, pushing the ball up after a re and reading the D.
5:05 "sixers were always in bottom half of defensive rating and that was the hole in Barkley's game that never really improved" 6:43 "defensively he also got a bit better but that was mainly a team thing - it's easier to play defence when you're surrounded by better defenders" so which is it, the player or the team that's responsible for defence???? can't have it both ways
mrgor24 When he talked about a poor defensive rating he was talking about the sixers teams. When he started talking about him having better defenders when he was on the suns. So he had different teammates who were better defenders.
@mrgor .........sixers defensive rating is so misleading. I watched sixers since the times of Dr.J etc etc. Their defense was solid against teams they should beat and then " lockdown defense " against teams that had winning records !!! There were not many teams that blew the sixers out . Sixers without charles were not as solid but with charles ....that defense was tough .......just ask Michael Jordan ??? especially when derek smith used to play !!
You left out a few key points..i thought you would mention his all star appearances and the fact that barkley led the 1992 olympic dream team in points with 18ppg, a team that had jordan, david robinson, stockton, malone, bird, johnson ect.
Nice vid, good summary. Sir Charles would no doubt have at least 1 ring had he played in any other time besides Jordan-era, he was just that type of athletic phenomenon. You could have mentioned his time on the 92 Dream Team as well. People forget that out of Bird, Magic, Jordan, Pippen, Malone etc it was Barkley that lead the team in scoring.
He was maybe 6'5" or so and look at the era. I was watching the games then and he was a force of nature. He just scored no matter what you did to guard him. For him to be that efficient in the era of dominant centers and forwards in the 80's and 90's is amazing.
I saw a news, a reporter asked Sir Charles considering to be the governor of Alabama or not. And he respond " The salary of the governor is not enough for my gambling "
The no rings thing is ridiculous considering most good, great and other HOFers in his era didn't have rings bc of dominant franchices that were stacked -- mainly the 90s Jordan Bulls. It's only because he's on TV and with Shaq, that she gets shit on for it. You ever hear people give Penny, Stockton, Malone or Ewing a hard time about it, for example? Sheesh.
The Lakers weren't really a factor after the very early 90s when they went to war with the Pistons (who you left out), and again in the late 90s with the additions of Shaq and Kobe (meaning that Barkley's 90s time with the Suns, they weren't a problem for him -- the Bulls andRockets were). The Lakers were an 80s powerhouse, so them and the Celtics were an issue when he was with the Sixers, as was the poor management of the Sixers when their powerhouse team got old and was broken up. The Knicks were very good in the 90s and they didn't even win a title - same with the Sonics. Otherwise, I agree.
Same for Grandmama...I mean Larry Johnson. He was amazing when he came into the league and that back injury just killed his career. I would say I feel sad for him but he got money that I will never see, so I'm sure he's doing just fine.
literally nobody ever stopped charles barkley from dominating the paint ever in his prime..best rebounder and coast to coast dunker as well..absolute freak of nature..second most entertaining player to watch behind mj only..sometimes the guy was playing some follow volleyball style under the rim as if he was the only guy in the paint..
@jimmie jenkins you must be under coronavirus lockdown to be responding to comments from 8 months ago! Missin the NBA more than i thought hope things straighten out soon! Be safe!
Sir Charles was a BEAST. I was MJ fan naturally, who wasnt in the 80s and 90s, but Barkley was a great player to watch and see play. You knew he would get buckets. Unguardable. No one player could stop him then and im pretty sure he would be unstoppable today even more.
Barkley was one of the best ever at his position and he is kind of a running joke as not being good because of how much Shaq has to say about him. They have a rivalry and go at each other and since shaq tends to be the more popular individual when he says Barkley wasn't good and that " he shouldn't even be a hall of famer", the young generation believes that whole-heartedly. But statistically he was crazy good and considering his height at his position.
If barkley dont belong in the hall of fame, there should not be a hall of fame. If young generation never seen him play then WTF do they know. He be a beast.
No. Chuck wasn't perfect. Early (at Philly), late in his career with Houston, he wasn't always in the greatest of shape. Young Charles was hot headed and feuded with officials, got into fights and some say he wasn't quite as dedicated as he should've been. Nonetheless, he improved on some of those issues (esp at Phoenix) and had a solid all around game. Like Malone, he became a very good passer as his career progressed, was always a bull on the boards and got you 25 ppg as well. Not a lot of those guys around! Not many at all.
If Shaq was 6'4 1/2" like Barkley, he wouldn't be near the player Barkley was, the only reason he gets the edge is because he used his size to dominate.Barkley dominated at his position despite being 4-6 inches shorter than those who guarded him
So what? If Bill Russell were 6'4", he wouldn't have 11 rings. If Wilt Chamberlain were 6'4", he'd never have averaged 55 ppg. And if Barkley were 7'1", maybe he dominates but doesn't try as hard and everyone thinks he's overrated. These fantasy scenarios are pointless.
So glad to see him get a bit of recognition with this video. It seems like people forgot about how great he was. He was so fucking intense! My favorite player back then and still is!
Barkley was a BEAST. Dude put up insane numbers in his prime. His scoring and rebounding numbers in particular were crazy. In 1993 he was arguably the best player on the planet. Only MJ was arguably better that year.
27% is not too terrible for that time if he's taking them in the right situations. Especially if on the flip side he's leading the league in 2pt% and shot decently from the free throw. But, I never got to see full live games, so I don't doubt he started to settle too often once his athleticism went.
Shawn Kemp that’s not how that works. Usually the transition from SF to PF means you’re too slow for SF my guy. Or they need a 3 point shooter at the 4
Barkley was mental in back in the day. I think he has the most rebounds in the second half, offensive I mean, of 11? 11 ORB in two quarters? WHAT?! I think he's only behind Tim Duncan as a power forward.
The way he played the game at 6' 4" in his Sixers days may be the most impressive thing I've ever seen on an NBA court. His game evolved, especially with the Suns and Rockets, and while he was always very good, nothing was quite like the way he physically dominated much bigger guys in his early NBA days.
Barkley was probably the 2nd greatest player during the 80’s and 90’s other than Jordan and if not for Jordan would be at least a 1 time champion.. people don’t also realize that the suns lost the the eventual champions 3 years in a row.. they could have been back to back to back champions
I remember watching Sir Charles in the 90's and he was pound for pound the most physical and strongest player I ever saw. He played against all the legends during his career and Nobody crashed the boards like him and Rodman neither it was beautiful to watch.
love the effort of making a video about Charles as a player! He gets disrespected way too much in media these days as an all time great player who proved himself in two of the most competitive as well as coining decades of the NBA. Despite his playing prowess he was also a huge part of forming the NBA's culture as we know it now, nationally and globaly (dream teams top scorer). I think you still leaving some of his strengths out!! While I agree that he has to live with being called not clutch enough since he ultimativley did not win it all he was amazingly clutch during his 92 run to the finals where he hit the game winning J over David Robinson as well as scoring 464 and 24 in game 6 of the WCF!!! Also I think while its true that he was not a dominant defender I think it gets overmentioned over how GREAT of a ballhandler he was at his position and also how skilled of a passer he was! He changed the game with the way he could lead the break with skill and sheer power. He was also super quick while being one of the strongest players in a very physical league! So please do not leave out how skilled he was besides being a power player
No, it was because they failed to call the foul on Horace Grant, fouling Kevin Johnson. Kevin jumped up to shoot the ball, and Horace side swiped his hand. It was a foul. It's not a "the hand is part of the ball" bullshit call. Imagine if everyone just swiped the hand holding the basketball.
@Jason Monto Who are you talking to? If it's the OP, it doesn't look like it because you didn't reply directly to his message. If it was you reading the whole thread and replying to me, as it looks because I'm the message directly above yours, then I just explained why they lost. Not sure if it was to take the lead in game six, or to tie it. But, kevin johnson came down near the free throw line, jumped up and shot with Horace Grant coming from the side, and behind, and swiped at his shot. He got all of Kevins left hand. And no call happened at the end of game six. They could've won that game. Then it would be 3 to 3, going into game 7.
I clearly remember the “Dream Team” US of A olympic team back in the 1990’s. Chuck did not start, but he was truly the only unstoppable player on the team that summer in a rotation nearly completely full of future American basketball hall of famers. You mentioned team defense rightly so. Defensive stops and up-tempo offense translate to easier offense. Barkley was a beast. He played great without other great defenders in his career, but during that olympics he showed he was one of the best ever with a team full of “fantasy” players.
He was my favourite player at the time, because of size, energy, competitiveness and his big mouth & personality. I really love players who can score and grab rebounds. To me, he is one of the best power forward ever
I live in Europe and back in the 80's, NBA coverage was very weak then. No Internet, no RUclips... so all the news from the NBA, I got from a friend of a friend of a....who worked for the national television and so we managed to get some video tapes once in a while. Then, suddenly there was a new channel, that broadcasted one game per week. What a highlight! I remember one day watching a game of the Bulls vs. Sixers (I believe it was 1987) and of course, I was very excited to see a game of Michael Jordan. But on the other team, there was this man, that dominated the paint all over. It was incredible how powerful and how much heart he put in his game. I think he got over 20 Rebounds. As great as Michael Jordan was, I had never seen before such a power! That was the day, I became a fan of Sir Charles.
@@brotherdcp-t710w4 People now remember Duncan too much as an old guy who was a Russell-like leader. They probably weren't around when the guy was younger before the foot injury, dominated both sides of the ball, and was an unstoppable force on offense. I remember the Spurs always passing the ball and playing a team game but when it came down to crunch time, they would go through periods where they simply force-fed Duncan and let him do his thing. Guy was a 20pt scorer on paper but only because he was unselfish, he really had 30ppg ability whenever he wanted to use it. It was like one of those badges on Madden or something, sometimes you just had to turn on "The Big Fundamental" badge and let him go to work.
this dude contradicts himself when talking about CB defense with the Suns, of course it's harder to play good D when you're surrounded by bad defenders, he wasn't bad, more like above average team defender
@Najee Nixon ......Barkley's defense was not bad at all. He would block shots when the team needed it most but was not known for his blocking......he was great at playing the passing lanes ....but his defensive attribute that really set him apart from others was his defensive rebounding !!! This guy at 6'5" would grab 15 boards in the most crucial part of a game against some of the big giant centers from back then. His passion for the game was bar none top 6 in the league with Mike being 1 of course , kobe 2 , iverson 3 , magic /bird 4 , reggie miller 5 and barkley/shaq 6 .
This channel is a really great NBA talks channel, definitely in my top 2 (Mike Korzemba is also on the top 2 and they're interchangeable). Much love from the Philippines. Keep it up!
Korzemba is annoying as fuck, screaming the entire video with the same monotone voice. He looks like a douche bag. Like the dude who bullied anyone at school.
he was a terror defensively when it came to intimidating a player and knocking the hell out of their shots around the rim, and he'd own the defensive glass, plus was quick and plenty energetic enough to get his hands in the passing lanes and create a counterattacking situation (for e.g. he avged around 2spg multiple times). But perhaps his one on one marking of his man wasn't the best but then again which great PF is ? A couple.
Charles was so cool and i watched up to him to get better at my position as a PF Defensive Player. He is really underrated this Days. But back in the 90's he was a Big Star and well known! We still Love you Sir Charles
Barkey was an absolute Beast. Too short but still dominant at the same time. I met him in Houston late in his career and he was a wonderful guy to talk to. Much props :-)
Charles Barkley was one of the greatest players ever. Bobby Knight called him a “fat pig,” which is proof of his greatness, because Bobby was not exactly a great judge of talent.
Probably one of the best individual players of all time, in terms of ability to create at will. It's too bad that Barkley didn't get a championship, but the 90s were a very tough time to be a player in the Western Conference.
He was old in Houston and STILL never averaged less than 10 boards in a season. He also never cracked the 20 point avg in his last 4 seasons but STILL managed to avg 22 points for his career.
Julius was a MONSTER! Don't just look at stats, particularly just from the NBA. He played several years in the rival ABA-- which, importantly, was on the same level competition-wise. Taking his whole career, he was a 30,000-point scorer and usually the best athlete on the court. In college, he AVERAGED 20 points and 20 rebounds a game at UMass-- at only 6'6".
Merle Ball, I agree. Julius wasn't particularly known for defense, passing, or outside shooting, but in crunch time, he was everywhere at both ends getting the critical basket, steal, rebound, pass, or block. He did it all with style, and he and Pistol Pete were the two most entertaining players ever to watch.
Barkley highlights are 50% more entertaining than those of almost any other player. Wild coast to coast dunking rampages? Clutch game winners? Half-court behind the back passes? Blocking shots like a madman? It's all there. One of the old NBA videos I used to own had this clip with the announcer saying, "The 'sucker play' by Barkley. Does it work?......Yes!" as he let the ball roll on the floor for several feet before grabbing at the last minute and driving for a score. He was good enough to make crazy stuff up successfully. Real talent there.
The sometimes debate that popped up a few years ago when arguments could be made that Durant was better than LeBron is similar when talking about Barkley at one point. I remember prior to the Bulls first championship when there was a portion of people out there who considered Barkley better than Jordan.
Son, defense is a team thing. By the way Draymond Green is not a better player than Barkley. Better defender, but Barkley was a 6'5" forward in the days of the 7footers.
Olojuwan was injured the year Sir Charles joined. Otherwise ‘Round mound of rebound ‘ would have gotten his championship. Charles was so good that year. I still feel grateful that I watched it all.
Barkey was 5'10 until the summer of his Junior year in HS, but shot up to 6'4 by the time school started for his senior year. Billy Cunningham said "He was a power forward in a small forward's body with guard instincts." He really was a beast all on his own for the most part. Sad that Danny Manning got hurt late in that one season, he could easily been the difference vs Houston.
Barkley is probably my favorite all-time player to watch . When he was in his prime , he was a beast! Loved watching his game. Handled the ball like a guard, could jump outta the building , amazing rebounder... he had it all. Cuz of MJ , i think he gets over-looked in a lot of areas. I always loved how high he could get up from a stand still off of 2 feet. He shocked the shit out of many centers, try'n to dunk on him as he would send it back ^ ^ If i could build a team with NBA players...from any era , Barkley would be a starter on it. Thanks for the memories Chuck! Love & miss ya play'n , Brotha!
Awesome video man. Barkley was the epitome of the word power forward but played more so like a point forward with the coast to coast drives to the basket. Charles Barkley was a beast!
The Phoenix Suns should've gotten back to the NBA Finals the next 2 seasons in '94 and '95. Choked both times against the Rockets (eventual NBA champs) in the playoffs. Twice game 7s. Had a 3-1 series lead in one of those playoffs. They could've won an NBA Title those years as well. After that, the team got old. Barkley was traded to Houston. Their coach got fired. They declined , but rebuilt quickly within a few seasons and a playoff team again. While with the Rockets, they kept losing to the Utah Jazz in the playoffs.

VT 24 But didn't. That's how great he was
I saw Barkley once in an exhibition game in Munich, Germany against a good German team. It was borderline funny how he had his way with them. He positioned himself at the low block and methodically worked his way to the rim. Again and again and again. There was absolutely nothing the defence could do to stop him. Never saw such combination of brute strength and finesse footwork.
you're missing that Barkley outplayed everyone else on the Dream Team, and his clutch shot over David Robinson in the 93 playoffs
Charles was great, this era of the NBA was incredible. There was so many great players Charles gets over looked. I hate to say this, but had he been 6’9” or taller we might be considering him as a top 5-10 player of all time. One of my favorite players of all time.

Good video. I hate that people only know Charles as the guy on TNT. He was a freakish athlete and an all time great.
Watch the old dream team videos Barkley was the star player over all the hall of Famers. I remember when he was at Auburn, he almost single handedly dismantled a UK team that had 5 starters that played in the NBA including two 7 footers he out rebounded.
When I got Lakers vs. Celtics for my Genesis, I loved picking the Sixers, because only Barkley had this unstoppable dunk called the Gorilla Slam.
No one could block it, no step needed, it just exploded onto the rim. Ahh the 90's!

5:05 "sixers were always in bottom half of defensive rating and that was the hole in Barkley's game that never really improved"
6:43 "defensively he also got a bit better but that was mainly a team thing - it's easier to play defence when you're surrounded by better defenders"
so which is it, the player or the team that's responsible for defence???? can't have it both ways
1. statement was he couldnt anchor a defense
2. he got a lot better defensively but that was mainly a team thing - probably cuz they had an anchor
sn1K the anchor on the Suns WAS Charles loool. So again, was it him or team? 🤔
yea this guy just talks about his scoring doesn't even mention his rebounding and defensive rebounding is a big part of defense.
mrgor24 When he talked about a poor defensive rating he was talking about the sixers teams.

Nick Granese
Very good point.
Penny got hurt, he was done at 25, like Grant Hill...never the same players
Same for Grandmama...I mean Larry Johnson. He was amazing when he came into the league and that back injury just killed his career.

But statistically he was crazy good and considering his height at his position.
also in the 80-90s PFs werent all like 6'10, now even 6'8 is considered small
the crazy thing was that charles was actually 6'4 or 6'5
+Acaciastreet
He's at least 6'5. When you see him standing next to other people, it is obvious.

Watching Chuck growing up he was my second favorite player behind Jordan and seeing that he was 6'4 he was pretty amazing
If Shaq was 6'4 1/2" like Barkley, he wouldn't be near the player Barkley was, the only reason he gets the edge is because he used his size to dominate.Barkley dominated at his position despite being 4-6 inches shorter than those who guarded him
AAAMEN, Patrick. AMEN! Charles, had skills and power.
Unbelievably good, and now he's great for TV.
Barkley was a BEAST. Dude put up insane numbers in his prime. His scoring and rebounding numbers in particular were crazy. In 1993 he was arguably the best player on the planet. Only MJ was arguably better that year.
Charles in his prime was fun to watch, but you're right he took too many 3's! Especially with Phoenix.
Matt Yellowhorse didn't even know he took threes
how much does seatgeek pay him?
27% is not too terrible for that time if he's taking them in the right situations. Especially if on the flip side he's leading the league in 2pt% and shot decently from the free throw. But, I never got to see full live games, so I don't doubt he started to settle too often once his athleticism went.
Shawn Kemp that’s not how that works. Usually the transition from SF to PF means you’re too slow for SF my guy. Or they need a 3 point shooter at the 4
Carlton Harris explain the bucks playing Giannis Antetokounmpo at PF then?
Sir Charles sure was a fun player to watch. Very intense and explosively athletic. Getting to see him commentating after all these years is a bonus.
He had underrated leaping ability and long arms. He was unstoppable.
Barkley was mental in back in the day. I think he has the most rebounds in the second half, offensive I mean, of 11? 11 ORB in two quarters? WHAT?!
I think he's only behind Tim Duncan as a power forward.
Yeah that's just amazing
Charles was a baller!
He was not turrible !! Got more out of his size and work ethic than just about anyone. The Round Mound of Rebound is still entertaining to listen to.
The way he played the game at 6' 4" in his Sixers days may be the most impressive thing I've ever seen on an NBA court. His game evolved, especially with the Suns and Rockets, and while he was always very good, nothing was quite like the way he physically dominated much bigger guys in his early NBA days.
I saw him numerous times at The Palace growing up when he was in town. In his prime, he was an absolute beast.
He actually looks very explosive and fast
Mark 2909 he was. A prime Barkley was as explosive as say blake griffin his first few years in LA
Not only that but he could over power all but the biggest players In the game. Even guys like Shaq and Ewing had trouble with him in the post.
Damn Barkley with Magic. That would have been a scary team.
Barkley was probably the 2nd greatest player during the 80’s and 90’s other than Jordan and if not for Jordan would be at least a 1 time champion.. people don’t also realize that the suns lost the the eventual champions 3 years in a row.. they could have been back to back to back champions
Hakeem? and strictly in the 80s Bird and Magic? He had from about 88-94 where he was top 3 in the league
People who saw him know how know great he was. A lot of that stuff is the silly back and forth between him and Shaq.
@jimmie jenkins well he should. I know that much.
don't bother trying to block a Barkley dunk. LOL

@Jason Monto
Who are you talking to?

Barkley wasn't that bad of a defender in terms of blocking shots and getting steals on occasion.
Like Larry or Dr J, he wasn't great at guarding people, but he did what you said and was a decent help defender. Magic was, too.
He was a pretty good shot blocker... he really was
this dude contradicts himself when talking about CB defense with the Suns, of course it's harder to play good D when you're surrounded by bad defenders, he wasn't bad, more like above average team defender
@Najee Nixon ......Barkley's defense was not bad at all. He would block shots when the team needed it most but was not known for his blocking......he was great at playing the passing lanes ....but his defensive attribute that really set him apart from others was his defensive rebounding !!! he was a terror defensively when it came to intimidating a player and knocking the hell out of their shots around the rim, and he'd own the defensive glass, plus was quick and plenty energetic enough to get his hands in the passing lanes and create a counterattacking situation (for e.g. he avged around 2spg multiple times). Put Draymond in that era and he's a Vernon Maxwell or Charles Okley at best. He's a role player not a franchise player. That is what Sir Charles was.
I go to Leeds, which is his high school
No dream team feature? He was the best player there...
Do a Dr. J how good was he really
Julius Erving is among the 10 greatest NBA players to play in the modern era of the NBA
The MJ of the 70's.
Church Service , I never thought I'd end up saying this when I was younger, but Dr. J is seriously underrated.

He was likely the most naturally talented player I've ever seen. If he had Mike's work ethic who knows how good he could have been.
