After watching between 30-40 Polestar 2 reviews on RUclips, this is by far the most informative, honest and comprehensive review. Fantastic production Ryan, keep up the great work 👍
I came here to say this 👆
Just the fact that it has a blinker stalk makes it a win in my book.
I heard it even comes with a reliable and fully working park distance sensor suite. It’s truly next level tech.
Back in about 2008 were you up in arms about button-less phones? Everyone who was soon got used to touch screens. Same will happen with wheel mounted indicators etc.
@@edwardhackett-jones8126 You're very naive if you think that's the same. One is literally a life-threatening moment where if you have to look away you may crash and die, the other is calling someone? Sure, your life might be dependent on that call, but that is by far not the most common use-case.
@@Tanax13wtf are you on about? It's a blinker, the majority of people don't use it anyway.
@@Tanax13 are you always a drama Queen? Jesus, get a grip!
I was reminded that you are a drummer when I heard the brief and classy percussion breaks between segments. Nice review between the drum breaks, too!
I really enjoyed and appreciated this review. Ryan remained objective about this car despite his affinity for Tesla. The action shots of driving were helpful to me in seeing how the car responds. I have not enjoyed my Tesla experience and am anxious to unload my 21 Model 3. This car is a definite contender.
bias* for Tesla
I maintain the electric cars for a major rental car company for the rental car center at PHX. I’ve grown to dislike the Tesla 3, but enjoy every moment I get to spend in a Polestar 2. It feels more like a high performance car as opposed to a glorified golf cart with a tablet stuck to the dashboard.
Got the 2024 dual motor after testing most of the EVs out. It feels like a car, the driving experience is the best out there in the price bracket, which was important for me, and it's practical. Love it.
The refreshed Polestar 2 long range rear wheel drive has 406 mile range WLPT which beats most of it's rivals. The refreshed Tesla Model 3 has no indicator & wiper stalks which will put off some buyers. The Polestar 2 is also a hatchback which makes it more practical than the Model 3 sedan.
Makes it more practical is a rather conclusive statement on a matter which is entirely based on preference and varies based on the situation
@@HTX-enjoyer A bigger opening for the trunk is always more practical, there's no point even debating that. If we're talking the car overall though, I agree. I really wanted to buy this, but due to not having enough space in the rear seats to practically have a rear-facing child seat in it, I had to look elsewhere (Ioniq 5 in my case).
@@Tullekunstner bigger opening is often more practical, most of the time makes no difference, and in some cases can be more annoying to deal with (it also makes a difference for how was it is to bask a back seat window and reach in the trunk as an example)
@@Tullekunstner I have managed to put a rear facing seat in a BMW M140i (1 Series). The Polestar is cavernous by comparison and I had no issue with putting the same seat (now front facing) in a PS2 I rented for a week.
@@mshackleton1 Yeah you can fit one, but you don't wanna be the person sitting in the seat in front of it.
Nice review. I have a 2022 Polestar 2 dual motor with the Plus and Pilot packs and absolutely love it.
Really great review 👍 It is very thorough and with lots of details and comparisons to other cars. A job well done… (Love the drum solos too)
Yes. You got it right when you say Swedish company and offshoot of Volvo. So many people I read say Geely makes this car when they don't. (And by that I mean creates, not assemble in a factory, the car) Geely owns the company, Volvo, that makes this car, but they themselves do not make the car. The good thing about Geely is they've pretty much left Volvo alone and financed them to make Volvos, but a lot of people seem to think they've taken over Volvo which is not the case. At any rate, Volvo did design this Polestar. It's the Volvo Concept 40.2. Starting from the Polestar 3, those are Polestar designs (based on the Precept). However, Polestar and Volvo designs overlap and share.
You're the type of Tesla owner/fan I like. You love what you do about Tesla but can appreciate qualities of other makes. This is a solid review. Per interior size, the Polestar 2 isn't built on a dedicated platform so it has some of the drawbacks of an ICE car. The 3 and 4 will be huge inside, at least for passengers.
I like the fact you entered your drum solos into the transitions. Nice touch
I appreciate your review as you understand that there is more to an EV than EV-specific metrics. Some reviewers say that one car is bad because it's not as efficient as a Tesla. That's like saying a BMW 5-series is worse than a Honda Accord because the Honda is more fuel efficient. There are more aspects to cars, whether an EV or ICE, and people have their own individual preferences and know what matters to them. Thanks for an interesting review!
Very interested in Polestar 4… in my mind it could be the first realistic tesla alternative
Agree polestar 4 is amazing
Your Jazz Drum Sections were not lost on me! As always, great review Ryan x from New Zealand.
As someone who just bought a Polestar 2, the reason was really simple: It felt like a European sport sedan that happened to be an EV, instead of a flashy tech product trying to reinvent the automobile. Also, the Tesla interior is trash.
This is one of the exact reasons I made the same choice. I am also moving on from my Toyota 86, which was such a fun car but fuel efficiency and space is something that was getting earily annoying. The P2 has enough space for the forseeable future with just the two of us and potentially a couple passengers for a small roadtrip; whereas some of the CUVs are too big. The fact that is sits between a Sedan and CUV in regards to driver height is also really nice, you don't feel floaty like in a CUV but can also be slightly higher than a Sedan. The 0-100km is much better than the Toyota but it isn't over the top like he said in the vid, so I can still have a lot of fun without going overboard. I unfortnately haven't had the chance to take it on windy roads which I hope it can give me a bit of the same driving experience as the Toyota but that is something I will have to deal with if it doesn't. Overall I am super excited for my delivery at the end on July in a couple weeks.
Nice little drum breaks! Great content. Nicely delivered. Thanks Ryan.
You forgot to mention that the car also has Google play so you can download apps
I personally love the styling of this car. Sure there are some downsides, but it is in my top picks for an EV, tied with the new M3
Always liked it more than a 3, the bad part is the console/cupholder area.
Agreed, I rented this car for a week, and overall it's great, but the cupholder placement is terrible, bordering on being a deal braker
Good to see you getting out of the studio and doing road tests!
Love the new touch with jazz music to the intros for every segment 🎵😃.
That’s him on drums
Picked mine up yesterday... Polestar 2 AWD Plus Pilot 19"... Love it!!!
Thorough review - very nicely done - especially transitioning from item to item. Great job.
I really enjoyed your drum flourishes you added to this video. 🥁
As a Tesla driver who is not really that excited about the highland’s lack of steering wheel stalks, this looks like an exciting alternative.
Agree! The rear hatch is also a lot better for large boxes.
The Pixel headlights with matrix functionality is awesome on dark roads! 360 camera is also something I wished my Model 3 had. Both are in the pilot pack upgrade, but even without the Pilot and Plus upgrades it's still a very good car imo.
Btw, I'm 1.85 cm tall and managed to sit in the rear seats with 1-2 cm clearance above my head. The middle seat not so much though but not really an issue for me.
I would seriously pay $5k premium just to have dash screen and stalk… still, tough choice until it works on most Tesla superchargers 🤨
Interestingly I've just had this car delivered in the UK. Yours shows 78Kwh battery and 335KW power. Mine ordered Feb 23 and delivered this week is 82Kwh and 350KW for the performance version (also with new front gille). It seems like you've got the old motors and old battery on your review car. The performance version here is:
Range 342 - 367 miles (WLTP)
Power 350 kW / 469 bhp
Torque 740 Nm / 546 lbf-f
0 - 60 mph 4.0 sec
Single motor WLTP is 406 miles
Hello. May I ask how you've found it? I just test drove the performance pack dual motor. I really liked it, as much as I could experience it in London. Only downside was interior space and quite a bit of road noise even at lower speeds (it had the 20s, I wonder how the 19s would be). Very good value on salary sacrifice right now
@@philth7587 I'm really pleased with it. 13k miles in.
I came from Model S P100D. Whilst it is slower (almost everything is), it's still quick. Down a B road the the PS2 is so much more planted, stable and is properly damped. You can really throw it down a road and it felt as good as the Taycan I tried.
So far it has been without any faults, where the model S was back for warranty work every 3 months over 4 years.
Ive quickly got used to the driver cabin which is more snug than the Model S. In the rear it probably isn't great for very tall passengers.
It has lots of nice touches if you get the other packs. Pixel LED light are awesome. Main beams on all the time and it just blacks out where other vehicles are.
No phantom braking or panic steering like the Tesla which I got sick of. Having to hold you foot on cruise just in case it sees the wrong shade of shadow and emergency brakes. Polestar doesn't seem to have this problem.
Hatchback practicality, also has nice boot divider which is great for stopping everything slide about.
UI has maybe a little under spec cpu but it's good enough. Has all the important bits like routing via way points, it adds in charge stops where necessary using fast not slow chargers. Gives you info on the chargers.
Shows the estimated state of charge at way points and destination.
Phone app is a bit basic, but getting better. Does the important things.
Efficiency so far is 288 wh/m v 365 wh/m I averaged in the Model S. Best I've managed is 222 wh/m which would be a theoretical 360 mile range.
360 cameras are nice. Could do with showing right next to the wheels
Drop down towbar is handy.
Build quality seems Japanese /German.
@@milesforrest6920 Thank you for the review! My first impressions mostly align with what you state (didn't try the headlights though, they sound amazing!).
I'm trying the Model 3 Highland tomorrow. Will then take my partner to check them out and make a call.
Thanks again for the detailed info! Enjoy! :)
@@philth7587 I couldn't replace the Model S so had to look elsewhere. No RHD. And I got fed up of the painful text based communication for frequent warranty work.
M3 I ruled out as I like the practicality of a hatchback but I don't want an SUV Y. Also the lack of driver screen and indicators in a fixed position so you don't have to think to find them put me off.
I don't like fussy interiors but I found the 3/Y to be too minimalistic. It was however more spacious
Definitely a load of pros and cos for each. I found the PS2 more a drivers car (steering, suspension & big brembo brakes) which was high on my priority list. I've not tried the highlander with new suspension.
Hope you find what you are looking for.
Nice review! This is the first I’ve seen of your work and I will subscribe.
As an owner of a launch edition Polestar 2 now for 86,000kms, it has been an awesome vehicle. Just a note regarding the HK sound system, I agree that the factory setting is underwhelming. However, once you start fiddling with the surround, eq and subwoofer settings, it really comes to life. I don’t know why the factory setting is so flat. It really is an amazing sound system no matter what music source.
Polestar 2 is a good car, i can tell you from my swedish insights that, swedish people who tend to buy Polestar over Tesla because of a few reasons...
One of them is that the car is optimized for more winter activities, and it can toe more than M3.
Yes, the polestar 2 can tow 50% more weight than the model 3.
lol @ “toe”
Magic cars driving backwards in the background of the shot of the polestar in the carpark!
This is quite possibly the best polar to review that I have seen on RUclips. It will be really good for the cheapest base model to be reviewed so we know how the different suspension works and how it drives differently to the better sport models that always seem to be tested
Congrats for the music on this video, good use of your talents :)
Thank you for a balanced and informative review. Great work!
Rear seat head room - Polestar 2: 37 inches. Tesla Model 3: 37.7 inches. About 3/4-inch difference.
Did you see his demo? He clearly had his entire hand between his head and the roof on the Model 3 and barely any room in the Polestar.
Great video as usual Enjoyed the drum riffs Cheers
I have a Tesla Model 3 and I'm trading it for a Polestar 2 this year. It feels like an upgrade in most areas. The regular car aspect is appealing to me even though you get used to Tesla being an Ipad on wheels. Proper stalks for lights, blinkers and wipers, seat heating, mirrors, etc it a positive. I also prefer the normal door handles and such, and it has slightly more ground clearance. I like the plastic protection around the wheel arches and rockers (Tesla Model 3 has issues with paint chipping in those areas and also is a bit low on uneven surfaces).
I'm sure there are some things I'll miss from Tesla like the Sentry mode and Dashcam, but overall this car seems better to me.
Hey Ryan, great review! I’ve been driving a Polestar 2 for two years and 98,000 kms in Canada and I only have good things to say. One thing that I appreciate versus the Model Y my wife owns is the accurate range it shows in the screen and the benefit of having Google maps which makes a big difference in choices of ways to get to places and accuracy in destinations. I know is subjective but the driving experience, the seats and quality perception is better with the Polestar. Charging at home is way slower! You may have missed the wiper fluid for the front lamps to show the Apple car for both screens. Cheers!
One of the best, balanced unbiased reviews I have read. Well done!
I have both. A Polestar 2 dual motor and a m3P. Tesla is still more fun to drive and quicker but the Polestar has won me over with the build quality, central display, a very good one at that with the ability to show even Apple's map in. Pilot assist, charging and software including the app, are no where as good as Tesla. All in all I like both . Did I mention build quality ?
Nice review. I previously drove Volvo S60’s. Now own 2 Tesla’s - ‘20 M3 & ‘23 MY, and love them. Good to learn about the Polestar 2. It did remind me that I wished the M3 was a hatchback and should’ve been part of Highland.
This was a very good thorough review…. Subscribed!
Great video! Love your drumming in the video. As a drummer my self I appreciate it :-)
Its a great car after 1 year of ownership. One note about regen... OPD on or off, it regens the same because pressing the brakes also engage regen.
I love the short drum fills between each section! I appreciate the minimalism of it, and the quality of the recording too. It's a nice unique touch. You've mentioned before that you are a drummer; I assume that is you yourself playing those @RyanShawtech?
One other fantastic aspect worth pointing out is that the charging port is in the same location as on a Tesla, so once the NACS adapters roll out, it will be very easy to use existing Superchargers without blocking multiple stalls / stretching the short cables.
In terms of audio system, you are the man!
🐐
And that’s very true. Even a “HK” the sounds is okay at best. I think they could have save on the licensing and put a generic system. Which in my mind this is a generic system with a brand!
Great review Ryan, I really like your open mindedness towards this car compared to a Model 3.
Interesting. When I test drovec the Polestar 2 (the previous version) I found both the rear doors and the rear occupant space very cramped. It also came oin these "packs" downunder which made things like a heatpump part of a $AU6K package. Things like the full driver assist were alsoin an optional pack. So it got quote expensive, quite quickly. The changes sound very positive.
Slow motion with jazz music I subbed instantly
Amazing review. Thank you!
Great review. Thank you
Enjoyed this review
great review. thanks
Ryan totally agree about interior space. I recently was in one for an Uber. I am 6 feet tall and the in the rear seat it is very low and was very comfortable, I banged my head on the getting in as I was not aware. As well, I thought the interior materials and plastics were very cheap, I was not impressed...
I'm 1.85 cm tall and managed to sit in the rear seats with 1-2 cm clearance above my head. The middle seat not so much though but not really an issue for me. But I get it if you are taller in the back. I guess I am tall in the legs, not back.
When I was comparing this with a Model 3 earlier this year the most marked advantage of the Model 3 to me was space. The Polestar felt a lot more cramped (probably in no small part due to the smaller windows and huge C-pillar) and legroom in the back was objectively less, in spite of that low seating position of the Tesla. On the other hand, there's the hatchback utility of it, so both seem to have trade-offs. I actually got a Model Y in the end because the budget allowed for it. That budget still wouldn't have allowed for a similarly spec'ed Polestar by the way, which is something worth noting as well.
On the plus-side, it seems they've made some real progress from their Volvo Infotainment-architecture. I used to have an XC60 and the digital dash/infotainment functions in that were clearly very much an afterthought. For example, to switch between views on the digital dash, you had to go into settings on the main screen. The only thing the "change-view"-button on the steering wheel did was change from your average speed or distance traveled to the average mileage of your trip.
The 2024 RWD model is definitely the smartest buy (which I now own) and not slow at all for a single motor model. As much as the Dual motor is awesome to drive, it's not worth paying that much more for quite a bit less range and a slower charging speed and I could never complain owning a RWD car with 361 ft-lb torque lol otherwise it's basically all the same anyway
I love these perspectives from someone that mostly does reviews of one specific brand, it shows the open mindedness and appreciation for what's out there
very good review thank you my bro
You made a good job. Thanks!
I find polestar 4 looks amazing in and out
Was that you, Ryan, playing the drums on the interludes in this video? It was a nice touch.
He said yes elsewhere 🥁
I had a chance to rent a Polestar about 9 months ago, but passed on it because I was concerned about where to charge it before I dropped it off in the mid-sized town I live. This review makes we wish I'd given it a try.
I rented one, I downloaded the Chargepoint app, you'd be surprised by how many chargers are hiding in plain sight
Hey Ryan, is that a magnesium or white color on the polestar?
Even your computer, smartphone and smart TV have an ONOFF button. And you can usually close them completely The exception may well be some televisions. so it's not just some hibernation that consumes power
polestar must have some type of surround sound. but then maybe it is required that the source is also with surround sound, if not like Dolby, Prologic
Then there is the question of which type of generation is most efficient at sending power back to the battery, for example on downhills. If you ride in a mountainous area, there may be long downhills
Nice drums dude
Great test
The charge amperage is for home charging only. The app selection is great but you have a few music options like Spotify. There is also a RUclips app which you have to set to the lower screen resolution to work. I wish that there was there was a drop down indicator for changing songs or whatever. It show the volume why not everything else. The gauge cluster doe not show estimated arrival time . The performance package should come with a awd to rwd eco mode!!
First meaningful comment - Great review. Seems like a nice car, but not quite what I'm looking for. I had to go back and re-watch the beginning where a line of cars are driving backwards in the background, strange.
you are not first
0-60 is also about efficiency my Zoe is faster than I need but the motor gets saturated,
so I get terrible efficiency when passing other cars
the intro music, is that your band?
I drove a '21 P2 last year. Dunno what you heard, but the HK was very nice. As impressive as the Volvo S60, S90 and Saab 9.5 HK systems I previously had.
Is it as sweet as my mix suite JBL LSR8328s? No, but it is a car stereo.
BT is a limited bandwidth transmission. USB is considerably better. I played M4A from my phone as well as my server 1500 miles away. The only change I made was a dip in the mid freqs.
But if one is looking to get 95db with exaggerated bottom, you can get that too. I listen at 85 no matter where I am. Except if it's AC/DC.
I was in bumf'k and had no trouble finding L2 charge stations for free. L3 station$ took ~30m to go from 10% to 80%. L2 about 3 hrs. Home 110v about 8 hrs.
It's a very nice car and comfy enough behind my 6' seat for another 6' human.
Best part, passing a 55mph semi-tandem in a 2 lane 65mph zone at 85mph in 2 secs. Not only did my spouse giggle, but so did the road.
The only thing I was a bit uncomfortable with was the tiny rear window, but I got used to it pretty quick.
Tempting to buy or lease except for the way insurance companies bill for EVs in general. If only there was a Euro investor/owner for the NEVS.
Great video. Could you please say the range in kms in futures videos?
350-360km (winter-summer) at 90% charge.
@@el.manyel thank you
@@el.manyelit has 653 km wltp so closer to 600 km range summer time. Thats with 100% charge though
Car is nice company is serious stock needs help but got a feeling long term good investment
Great review 👏 Great car 👍👍👍
How is the ride height? It's between a lower-to-the ground sedan and a taller generic SUV I am guessing. Easy to get in and out of the car? Asking for a very creeky friend.
The divider is actually so they dont have to put a hood release on the inside, like they have in the trunk.
ATM instead of buying a car i m buying polestar shares....😅😅😅
That backseat headroom might just be this cars biggest flaw… it’s unbelievable how tight fitting that is for anyone 5”10 and up… that’s honestly a deal breaker for me! And the sunroof isn’t as big as I thought it would be!
The back seat is for your children
I wish Tesla had included a hatchback into the design of the highland. Sedans are not practical for hauling anything other than people.
Good review and I don’t know if it’s been said or not yet, kinda sounds like you might possibly know but in most all cars I’ve ever own/been in when manually hooked up the quality of sound is much greater. I don’t know the science behind it so I won’t even try and to start spitting some bullshit 😂
Excellent review, snappy and to the point! That being said, you didn’t discuss charging speeds, and only touched a little bit on the charging network, and the ability to charge at home at reasonable speeds. All of these fall short compared to Tesla and for this reason, I would not spend so much on polestar . Still one of the best competitors at this time. Tesla still wins.
Before I bought a MYLR I tried out the PS2. I loved it. But the Polestar 2 is not meant for people above 6ft tall. Every time I got into the PS2 I would bang my knee on the center console. The problem is so prolific that any PS sales associate you talk to will tell you that the center console is the most common compliant they hear. You can just search Polestar 2 knee pad and confirm what I've said. Also the price of the PS2 vs Tesla and the supercharger network just kills the value of buying a new PS. I still love the PS2 more than any Tesla but being 6ft makes this car impossible as a daily driver.
I'm the same height as you - I hired one for a week driving around New Zealand - I had no issues with the console or the room in the driver's seat - my home car is a BMW M140i so I like a smaller, rear wheel drive vehicle with good dynamics and a bit of power. I buy the car to be driven, not be my loungeroom on wheels.
Google maps may be OK in the US but it’s hopelessly out of date in Australia. According to my display my house is just the field it was before the house was built four years ago!
The sound quality can actually be affected by which bluetooth codec is used
I’ve rented a few Polestar II’s at Hertz and felt very cramped in driver’s seat due to console. Also, this massive console was very poor for storage. I’m not a fan of its old-school door handles. Increased range in this 2024 model is a big plus over the 2022 I was driving.
I have a 2022 Polestar 2 and 2022 Model 3. Polestar has a smoother ride and I like the exterior look but I’ve had so many issues with the infotainment freezing/lagging and the vehicle not recognizing the keys or drivers. The polestar even drove without any keys and left me stranded! If the 2024 is anything like the 2022, I’d stay away.
I would like to add, as a counter point that I have a 2022 Polestar 2 that has had none of those problems. When surveyed on the Polestar subreddit, a vast majority (80%+) of owners don't have problems, but those that do have lots of them.
Highland extends the lead even further
I found the polestar suspension to be really stiff and the brakes made clunking noises. Need to experience 2
I have Polestar 2, never had experienced mobile keys problem, we have 3 drivers each with own mobile key.
FYI ours was a showroom Polestar 2 and we got it in March 2022. We’ve also racked up 21k in a short time. Not sure that contributes to the issues we are having with it.
He should have assessed the quality from a Music app such as Apple Music or Tidal or Qobuz or Amazon Music. If there is just like for an Android phone. or tested with a hi-res file or Lossless file
@ryanshawtech is that you playing the drums in between segments?
It is!
So many good features, a really good blend of ICE controls with EV and a great review but lacks what I've heard as one of the biggest knocks against Polestars and that's the service network. I'm in NW Illinois and my closest service centers are in Detroit, Minneapolis or Columbus OH. Given Polestar has some set maintenance schedules that they want done at the service center and I don't believe they offer on-site like Tesla, this pretty much disqualifies it for me, as that makes for possibly multiple long road trips, just for service.
Are those your drum fills?
Indeed!
Ryan, why would I buy this Polestar configuration you tested when I can get a refreshed Model 3 for half the price or less?
Interesting, this picture is completely different in Canada. The Model 3 RWD Standard range price is 57K and the Polestar 2 RWD Long range is also the same price making the latter appealing especially with the lower interest rate with Polestar. I see a 3k discount with TM3 2023 for current inventory and no eta for the 2024 Highland. Both are illegible for a 12k discount in Quebec (after tax).
Ryan is that you on those drums? Great if so!

Great review. I wish it had been an option when I bought my Model 3… but I probably would have still bought the Model 3 - I can’t forget my business dealings in China and thus couldn’t justify the price given China’s low wages.
For those who don’t know: it does offer Voice commands if you don’t like using the screen. I use it all the time in my Model 3.
not a big fan of voice commands especially when you are not alone. it requires you to interrupt who you are speaking to which is very rude.
and when you are alone it requires you to interrupt your music which is also very annoying.
so in the end i use it sporadically when i’m alone and not listening to music, radio or podcast
Front trunk, commonly called a “Frunk”
I'd like to see a Polestar wagon (not an SUV)!
dont forget a very importent change; the change to RWD in 2 WD.
was that Irvine?
Is that your own drum recording in the transition ??

Just bought t he MG4, can’t wait to get rid and it’s model 3 or polestar 2 currently shortlisted
