One of the greatest photographers of our time. Extraordinary vision and skill of the craft. I was fortunate enough to see his gallery exhibit in NYC at the Marlborough Gallery in the early 80's. His platinum prints in person are breathtaking. It was indeed an impactful moment for this young (at the time) photographer. Thanks Joel, Kurt
God he was good. Good at so many genre for such a long period of time. I have several of his books. I particularly like the small trades book. His retro exhibition in the Grand Palais in Paris in 2017 was exceptional.
Hello Robert, I'm glad you enjoyed the video. The truth is, he was a true "MASTER" in his craft. Incredible talent he had. Thanks for sharing your experience at the Paris exhibition. Have a great start to the week!
I've become a big fan of your videos. The presentations of the works of these photographic masters reveals the genius of these famous photographers and the information on their lives and experience completes the picture. Thanks for your efforts!
Hello Darrell, thank you very much for your kind words. 🙏 It's exciting to think that there are people who appreciate the work I do. It motivates me to continue creating quality content to showcase the work of these great photographers. Have an excellent start to the week! 🙂
Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 I'm really glad to hear that you find inspiration in Penn's work too. It means a lot to me that you keep coming back to my videos. Cheers!
Irving Penn did so much in one life. The artist and arranger, the scientist / chemist, and those portraits of perfection are a class above. This sort of perfectionist of the image would likely have a mental break-down doing street photography. You take the moment the best way you can on the street. There are so many forms of photography and of all which Penn entered into, or even created, as in technics, it is amazing to master so many.
41 minutes and 9 seconds of rapture! He was a photo God! VERY nice coverage of his work, great job Joel. I was just enthralled, he's such a master. I was thrilled to see sooooo many minutes and examples of his gorgeous work. So much gravitas in the frame, such a learning experience here. Not a great painter tho, lol, really had a hard time enjoying even one of those. But MAN could that guy take a picture and create a houseful of grace, emotion, space, light, composition, texture in a click. Thanks ever so much, this video is tour de force Joel.
Massive Congratulations for curating , creating and posting the lifework of Photography's finests. I suggest some names for consideration in future videos, HORST P. HORST, CRISTINA GARCIA RODERO, KARL BLOSSFELDT, SERGE LUTENS. THKS
@@Joel_Ulises thks to your efforts, young photographers can be introduced to the works of the ones who started it all. Watching your Irving Penn episode, I thought of Horst because, before Penn, he introduced the art concept to the covers of Vogue (famously portrayed in the corset Madonna wears in her Vogue video, which is taken from one of Horst pictures). Also thought of Karl Blossfeldt, a unique photographer who showed, like no other the concept of high design and architecture within nature. Also Cristina Garcia Rodero, a spaniard whose images of the religions traditions and rites in Spain, and elsewhere, are nothing but breathtaking. And to add to the mix, Floria Sigismundi, a video/movie director who is truly pushing the envelope with her photographs. Ricardo
Well-done video. My only gripe is the misleading title. Where are the candid portraits? I only saw very carefully posed portraits, which are Penn's thing. The film clip from Morocco was enlightening.
Hello Sylvian! Honestly, it still seems like a short amount of time to me! Maybe it's because I love photography and prefer to watch something that enriches me culturally rather than "tele-trash." Anyway, thanks for the suggestion!
I appreciate and enjoy this content. But is this TikTok? We do we need fake schmutz as if it's an old movie reel? It's distracting to me when I'm looking at such gorgeous images.
Hello Sharvo! Thank you for watching, commenting, and providing feedback on the vintage camera effect. Currently, if you check the latest videos, I am no longer using that mentioned effect. Have a great day!
Overall, a really good video. However, when the segment "Who was Irving Penn" starts you show a picture of someone who was trying to copy Penn's style and fell short. It is not Irving Penn. For some reason this photo is widely circulated on the web as a Penn self portrait. It is not. Having worked for him for a couple years I know what he looked like. There's a lot of disinformation out there!
Hi Emma! Thank you for the information you shared about the photo not being a self-portrait of Irving Penn. I looked in many places, and they said it was him. I had my doubts, and I see I was right. Thanks for pointing that out! Best regards!

Yeah, he is famous for being very laboured over his shots, spending ages on just one pose.
Excellent as always. these are starting to run a little long though. I think 20 minutes would be optimal.
