I have been into photography, with lapses, since the late 70's. Maier is my favourite photographer; such a wonderful talent for recording humanity.

Love Vivian's work , she had a good eye and captured so many human moments. Inspired me to try the 3.5 75mm TLR Rollei ...
Thank you for watching and commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Have a great day! 😊👍
Anyone that does street photography will tell you finding that special image where everything just works in the composition is not easy; you can spend days walking around a city just looking for that image. When you consider that a lot of her film output is not developed who knows what amazing finds they will come across in years to come.
Hello! 😊 Thanks for watching my video on Vivian Maier and taking the time to leave such an interesting comment! 👏
You're absolutely right, street photography is quite a challenge, but that's what makes it so exciting! Finding that special image can take a lot of time and patience, but when you do, it's truly rewarding! 📸
It's fascinating to think about all those undeveloped films by Vivian Maier and the surprises they might hold for us in the future. 😮 Who knows what photographic treasures could be hidden in those old reels!

Most of what was displayed here was street portraits, which are not that hard to do at all. Moments coming together with great backgrounds and story are rarer. She has some street photography and some portraits -- it is a mix of both.
she was lonely, the camera was her voice and reach out to the world
Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts!
She probably was lonely
❤ Love her photos...she had a unique style of capturing America😊
Thanks for watching!
I enjoyed her work. I like how the photos went from the 50's into the 70's.

Very very good documentary. Thank you from Germany
Hello Volker! Thank you very much for your kind words! Have a nice day!
Nice video 👌. So, the cameras I could spot here: Rolleiflex 3.5 A, probably used most in the Fifthies/ Sixties, Rolleiflex T, black Leica II, chrome Leica III, IIIC, Kodak Retina IIc, Exakta Varex (not sure which model), Contarex Bullseye, Contaflex, Robot Junior - quite a collection I would say…
Hi Sentimental! Thank you for watching, commenting, and for the excellent description of the cameras used by Vivian Maier. Greetings, and stay in touch for future content on the channel!
Very interesting documentary. Thank you. She lived in the magic of the shadows.
Glad you enjoyed it 🙂, I hope you have a nice day!
@@Joel_Ulises nice days since Christmas with my grown up children and their partners in love, thank you
Great video and amazing insight into an incredible photographer.
Hello Andrew! Glad you enjoyed it! 🙂
I don't think it was her intention to keep her work secret. I think she was too poor to develop and print hundreds of thousands of photos. She was barely able to afford purchasing the film.
It could be a possibility, thanks for watching and commenting, have a good day!
That’s the most realistic assessment in a sea of over-romanticizing a woman who probably couldn’t get past the gatekeeping in her own lifetime.
Amazing video of her work. Even some of the pics I haven't seen before.
She's one of the best to do it from her generation.
Hi Leslie! 😃 I'm really glad you liked the video! Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙌 Please stay tuned for more exciting content on my channel in the future! 📺🎉
Thank You Sir : I am humble and like her , Vivian am alone , so it is sometimes with Artists , we work , as much as we can odd though we are perceived. Doing Street in America now is so difficult , in 2023 as our " political class " has gained incredible power by teaching separation , and anguish and hate ... people are taught to hate and envy and destroy ... there is no love anymore in many ways. America , we as human's have forgotten our culture our community and love for one another , in Vivian's images you see the whole unstricken unfiltered and together a lovely patina , a multicolored quilt of faiths , of peoples , from different lives and strata , but a One an America , together growing living and yes , in millions of small ways ... loving. For our cult's of " noble wokeness " we have butchered that beautiful quilt of Life of shared community and care , of being many that are a ONE and a happy tough , solemn at times , yes in pain too , but a good and proud people . We need desperately to come back , come Home , and Love again .
Forget the self righteous screeching paralytic rage and blood curdling ugly vengeance and hate .... The way home ... is to forget the shallow self righteous cold hateful haughtiness , the elevated brow and nose .... of the " true believers " that in the end ...destroy the very thing they claim they revere : Our Democratic Republic . Our Home.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Apparently art has inspired art. Well said 👍
Thanks a lot for sharing!
No worries!
Love Vivian's work. 💯Thank you
You are so welcome 🙂
Excellent presentation with photographs I haven't seen before. There's a couple of good biographies on Maier by Pamela Bannos and Anne Marks. Worth reading. Personally, I think, had she been discovered in her lifetime, that she would have shunned celebrity
Hello there! 😃 Thank you for your kind comment! I'm glad you enjoyed the presentation and the photographs of Vivian Maier that I shared in the video.
It's great to know that there are good biographies about Maier by Pamela Bannos and Anne Marks. Her story is indeed fascinating and worth exploring in-depth.
I agree with you that Vivian Maier would probably have shunned fame if she had been discovered during her lifetime. Her focus on photography seemed to be driven more by passion than by recognition.

Hi Richard! Thanks for watching and commenting and I'm glad you liked the video about Vivian Maier. Please stay tuned for more exciting content on my channel in the future! 📺🎉
Thank you for rescuing her work. My husband's great grandfather was a photographer, all on glass plates. Unfortunately the village museum (in France) did not have the means to transport them from the barn where they were stored and no one in the family would help. All lost, an entire village's history through his lens.
Thank you so much for sharing your story. I'm truly sorry to hear about your husband's great grandfather's work being lost. It's heartbreaking when such important pieces of history can't be preserved 😔. Your story reminds me why it's so important to keep these memories alive.

Here's to you Vivian
Watching this very beautiful documentary made me sad. Such a talent that she herself never got to reap the fruits of. And now after her death her work is an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration for many.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Vivian Maier. I hope you have a great day. Cheers!
True street photography harks back to an era where every shot was a labor of love. Photographers then had to rely on their skill and intuition, manually adjusting settings, and waiting with bated breath until film development revealed the fruits of their efforts. There was a certain magic in not previewing image exposure until the moment of development.
Unfortunately, in today's era of 'point-and-shoot' and 'spray-and-pray', as depicted in many POV videos, it feels like the essence of this art form is being diluted. While photography is inherently subjective, I can't help but feel a disconnect between the indiscriminate shooting with highly automated cameras and the meticulous, thoughtful work of icons like Vivian Maier or Henri Cartier-Bresson. These legends had a knack for capturing the fleeting, candid moments of life, a skill that seems to be fading in the current landscape of street photography.
I don't intend to undermine the efforts of those who prefer modern methods. Every photographer has their own journey and style. However, personally, I find myself less inspired by this contemporary approach. It lacks the soulful touch and the intimate connection with the subject that traditional street photography so beautifully encapsulated.
Hello Gaston! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
You should look at Cartier-Bresson’s contact sheets…
@@williamlasl Yeah this guy is guilty of romanticizing a period.
My neighbour (now a very senior citizen) was a friend of hers and in his loft are about 12 suitcases of photographs, letters, film, cameras and post cards which she gave to my neighbour in the 1990’s.
Hey MrDastardly! 😊 Wow, that's such a fascinating connection to Vivian Maier! 📸
I'd love to hear more about your neighbor's experiences with Vivian Maier if you have any stories to share. It's amazing how these personal connections add a unique layer to her already captivating story.

What a genius!
Glad you enjoyed it! Cheers 🙋
Shouldn't the title at 20:48 say "Reflecting on HER life"?
You are correct 👍, it was my mistake 😔, thanks for the observation 🧐, Cheers 🙋♂️
Her angles were always good because the Rollei forced her to capture from just above the waist. Not at eye level.
Hey Xmorebid! 📸 Thanks a bunch for sharing your insights! 🙌 That's an interesting point about Vivian Maier's angles and the Rollei camera influence.

An unconventional character and therefore a great artist_,,,,
Thank you for comment 🙂 Cheers 🙋♂️
Wow ! Her exposures are unbelievable. I've been shooting with a Rollei for many years now and am still not comfortable with exposure settings. It looks like she would find herself with a shot to take, set shutter speed and aperture by just an innate feel and take the shot. Truly unbelievable. Thanks for your wonderful work in showing us hers.
Hello Pokerty! Thank you for writing and sharing your valuable experience in the world of photography using a Rolleiflex. Regardless of Vivian Maier having a privileged eye for capturing excellent images, we must not forget that she always had the camera hanging around her neck, constantly practicing both her eye and mastering the use of her camera. Here, the saying "practice makes perfect" is entirely true. Season's greetings, Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year 2024! Stay tuned for future videos on the channel! Cheers!
At 20:46 Shouldn't the caption read "Reflecting on Her Life" ? Otherwise a great visual bio.
You are correct 👍, it was my mistake 😔, thanks for the observation 🧐, Cheers 🙋♂
Hi, Joel.
Too bad this woman was only discovered after her death.
Whoever bought the suitcase with negatives and undeveloped rolls of photos now owns a gold mine.
Too bad she can't benefit from her success herself.
Although she never published anything herself, she made beautiful work on the street.
She was a gifted photographer who knew how to make a good composition.
This also applies to her self-portraits.
You made a very nice documentary about her, Joel.
Antoine.
Hey there! 😊 Thanks a bunch for your kind words and for sharing your thoughts! I really appreciate you taking the time to give me feedback.

Thanks for watching!
The woman didn't want to share her work and now people she didn't know are making lots of money off of it and her name.
Hey there,
I totally get where you're coming from. It's true that Vivian Maier was quite private about her work during her lifetime, and it's a bit complicated that others are now benefiting from it. I also admire her incredible talent and the amazing photographs she left behind.
My intention in sharing her work on my RUclips channel was to celebrate her art and share it with people who might not have discovered it otherwise. I have a deep respect for her legacy, and I believe her photography should be appreciated by as many people as possible.
The least are the greatest
Thanks for watching and commenting!
20:48 "Final Words, Reflecting on His Life" His? Vivian Maier was a woman.
Hi Chad! Thank you for watching and commenting. You're absolutely right, it was a mistake. Thanks for the observation!
I find her work deep; each image is a metaphor that only she could have explained. Her story is as fascinating as her photography. It is a true gift to have her work brought to light ,I only wish that she could have realized the accolades that her work has received after her death. An enigma, indeed.
Thank you Joel for your wonderful work on capturing this great photographer in this video. Well done!
