Back in 1971 I picked up a book with pictures in by Ernst Haas, a love of photography has stayed with me all these years and Ernst Haas was and still is my biggest inspiration. Thank you posting.
Some very wonderful photographs. He was ahead of his time, not only the fact that he shot with color film but the way in which he used color. Joel, Great job on the video! I very much enjoyed watching it.
For his time, he was a great photographer and creator. The colour film was still new to the public and print media. When Haas dropped his camera in 1986, he left inspiration to many new photographers, professionals and laymen. He was a genius of his time, but today he's just one among many.
Thank you for this wonderful retrospective of Ernest Haas. He was an inspiration for me when I was starting in Photography. He had a way of seeing and projecting his vision onto the film with ‘art’ in mind. I was a mostly B&W Leica rangefinder user in the early 1970s, and I remember him writing about the advantages of ‘seeing’ with the Leicaflex and through the lens, so I bought one myself. Also, he felt the small Leitz tabletop tripod for portability was even preferred to an extra lens (got one of those too). He changed how I made photography with equipment but also opened my eyes to the art of vision, the unusual, and self-fulfillment. Thank you again, beautiful work here by Hass, and beautifully presented.
Hi Hektor! 🌟 Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your experience in the world of photography. I'm glad you enjoyed Ernst Haas's video. Wishing you a Merry Christmas! 🎄
He definitely inspired me. A true master of the craft. His work will go on as long as people have the ability to create. Thank you very well done. The life and images of a true master.

Just an absolute genius presentation of his work and life story. I have to say that I teared up when I saw this master class on color photography. I can truly say that I was honored to receive the award from Leica for my portrait of Duane Michals in 1986 along with Mr. Haas. His work will always be an inspiration.
…and to Mr Hass for the pleasures his imagery fills our eyes and our world, that he so makes us think. Rather than just look. (your doco artfully does just to him and other classic artist in your series.) TQ
Hey! 😊 Thanks so much for your comment! I'm really glad you like how I present the videos and share new info about master photographers. Danny Lyon is a great suggestion! I'll definitely consider doing a video on him. Have a great day! Stay tuned for more, and if you haven't yet, don't forget to subscribe, like, and share with anyone who might find it helpful. Thanks again! 🌟
My favorite Ernst Haas quote was to a guy who constantly was touting his Leica. Ernst said Leica Schmeica. He also taught his students to use a viewing card, a card with a 2x3 inch opening mimic a 35 mm frame. He would have them stand in one spot and find 10 images.
Hey there! 😄 I love that story about Ernst Haas! "Leica Schmeica" - what a legend! 😂 It really shows his playful side. And that viewing card technique is such a smart way to train the eye to see new perspectives. I can imagine how challenging (but fun!) it must’ve been for his students to find 10 images from one spot. 🎯📷 Thanks so much for sharing that! Stay tuned for more content, and feel free to share with anyone you think might enjoy or find it useful. 🙌 Have an awesome day! 🌟
Each time I watch your videos I think: this is my favourite photographer! You bring joy , inspiration and motivation to my creative life. This means a lot for me. Thank you!
Hey dude! 🌟 I sincerely appreciate your kind words. It warms my heart to hear that my videos motivate and inspire you. It fuels my drive to keep creating content that's helpful and inspiring. Thanks again, and have an awesome day! 🙌
I loved Hass’ work in Life in the late 60s and early 70s. Once Life folded and I grew as a b/w photographer I lost track of him. I did not start building my library of photo books until the late 70s. Of course over the decades almost all of those books are b/w. Shame on me for not having purchased one of his books. I just ordered The American West.
Hello Robert! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The truth is that Ernst Haas's work is immense and has contributed greatly to the world of photography. Undoubtedly, he is a great photographer. Have a wonderful weekend!
Hey Cris! 🌟 Thank you so much for your kind words! Thanks Joel for another outstanding presentation. There are many great photographers , current and past , but a few stand out as being exceptional : Eugene Smith , Fan Ho , Saul Leiter and Ernst Haas are the ones that always amaze me . And having been made aware of him through one of your videos I might include Frank Horvath as well .
Hello Elizabeth! 🌟 Thanks a bunch for your awesome comment! I'm thrilled you enjoyed the presentation on Ernst Haas. 📷 Those photographers you mentioned are indeed exceptional, and I'm so glad you appreciate their work too-Eugene Smith, Fan Ho, Saul Leiter, and Ernst Haas are true legends. And it's fantastic that you discovered Frank Horvath through one of my videos! 🎥 Wishing you a fantastic day ahead! 😊🌈
As an aging beginner in photography as a hobby, aiming to explore what creative experiences and expressions I want to achieve, I find that having now come across two photography artists via RUclips, Saul Leiter and Ernst Haas....they are my top inspirations. I wonder if the technicolour effect of their film based shots can be achieved in a similar fashion with a modern dslr without much need for faffing in post production work
And why don't you try taking some photos with an analog camera? On the other hand, you can always download luts or actions for PS or Lightroom to try to emulate the analog film.
Great program, though I have one small correction to suggest: At 10:57 the picture is of the Taos pueblo, yet the caption says Santa Fe. Taos is not Santa Fe and the puebloans would not appreciate being shifted to Santa Fe.
Love and have studied his work, but I have a question. While photography is actually very subjective, I wonder why bad pictures that I would have tossed in the trash, happen to be “genius” work if it comes from a famous guy. It’s not jealousy, it’s a fact. Open any book from any famous artist and you’ll question why it’s any good! Just my humble opinion. Thanks.
Hello George! Thank you for writing, commenting, and sharing your thoughts. The truth is that I also share your opinion regarding what you say; undoubtedly, fame and prestige always give a kind of "extra" to certain jobs, so to speak. I also believe that just because a photographer is globally recognized doesn't mean we have to like all of their photos. There are occasions when I don't like some photos from many authors, yet, as you well mention, they appear in books. Sending you warm regards, and I hope you have a happy 2024!
Because academics like to complicate and over explain things that in other words would be simple. Saul Leiter said when taking a picture he just did it because he thought it would be a nice picture not because it needed a 5 page essay to explain like today's modern art.

Great Work! A must for photographers... How about Herb Ritts? Is he worth exploring....
Hello Kelsantaleo! thanks for watching and commenting, Herb Ritts will definitely be explored in some of the future videos, have a nice day!
Great program, though I have one small correction to suggest: At 10:57 the picture is of the Taos pueblo, yet the caption says Santa Fe. Taos is not Santa Fe and the puebloans would not appreciate being shifted to Santa Fe.
Hello Matt! Thanks for watching, commenting, and correcting the title of the image you mentioned. Cheers!
The photograph titled "Santa Fe" is really the Taos Pueblo in Tao.
Hello David! Thank you for providing the information about the photography you mentioned. Cheers!
When I watched his pictures from Venice I came to think on David Hamilton. Any comments. 🤔
Thanks for watching!
👍❤️👍
Thanks 🙏
What about Andreas Feininger? ;)
Good recommendation!
Thanks.

For sure, goes to show they're no judges who have the final say. Proves we all see different
Because academics like to complicate and over explain things that in other words would be simple. Saul Leiter said when taking a picture he just did it because he thought it would be a nice picture not because it needed a 5 page essay to explain like today's modern art.
Same question… not being condescending or cynical, just attempting to digest the subject.
Perhaps we ordinary viewers simply lack the ability to appreciate their work
‘Heute’ is pronounced, « ˈhɔʏ̯tə » I believe. « Hoay-tuh »
Thank you for the correction!
Heute means today in German, eu in German is pronounced oy, so its more like hoyte
Hello cosmaracoruso! I appreciate the feedback on pronunciation. Have a great day!
Nicely done! Just a nitpick, the German mag Heute is pronouned something like Hoy tah. It means today.
Hi dude! 👋 Thank you so much for the correction! Have a nice day 🌞
A great photographer and interesting video. But please, try again with HEUTE. It's not pronounced Hoot, but rather something like HOYti - which means "Today" in german.
Hey! 😊
Thanks so much for the kind words and for checking out the video! You're totally right about the pronunciation of "HEUTE." I appreciate your understanding of my little misstep there. We're definitely working on improving every day! 💪
Hope you have an awesome day! Stay tuned for more content, and feel free to share it with anyone you think might enjoy it. Your support means a lot! 🙌
Your video profiles are excellent except for one thing: Ditch the AI voice for a human narrator. It would make these videos so much better.
Thanks for watching and commenting have a great day 🌞
It’s not pronounced hut, do your research heute which means today.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
An OK photographer but not on the same plane as Saul Leiter
Just OK? Are you serious? Haas is on a higher plane than Leiter. I like and admire Leiter's photos but even Saul himself would agree with me.
Hello Mike, thank you for watching, commenting, and sharing your thoughts about this great photographer. Have an excellent start to the week!
@@yeohiI’d have to agree. I like Saul Leiter a lot too but Haas’ work is exceptional.
