One of my favorite photographers, not only for his images but for his philosophy of what it means to be a photographer.

In 1974, I had been in Asian self exile 4 years following the mortification of discovering the truth about my country's involvement in Vietnam. I got a round-world ticket to return to the USA, chose to stop in Paris and London, mainly for their photography scenes. Paris in particular enchanted me and I walked ALL day every day, mainly around the Latin Quarter, continually delighted by recognizing scenes from Henri Cartier Bresson or the other brilliant French photodeities.
One afternoon, having carried my cameras miles since daybreak, I was totally exhausted. I sort of hung from a pole on the sidewalk, trying to rest my legs and shoulders, wiped out. Then I looked up into the smiling face of Robert Doisneau standing a meter from me in sympathetic posture, eyes twinkling with wisdom and understanding. He slowly nodded toward me in one of the most compassionate, profound smiles ever, "I know. Keep it up." Bless that man. Bless him.

Thank you so much for sharing this incredible story! 📸 It’s amazing to hear about your journey through Paris and how deeply connected you felt to its rich photographic history. I can only imagine how inspiring it must have been to walk those streets, surrounded by the echoes of legends like Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Doisneau.
And wow-what an unforgettable moment to have crossed paths with Doisneau himself! That brief but profound interaction sounds like it captured everything his work represents-human connection, empathy, and warmth. It’s one of those encounters that stays with you forever. 😊
I really appreciate you taking the time to share this with me and the community here. Stories like yours remind us why photography is so powerful-not just as art, but as a way to connect with others and preserve meaningful moments.
Wishing you a fantastic day and an even better 2025! 🎉 I hope you’ll stay tuned for more content on the channel, and feel free to share it with anyone who might enjoy it. Thanks again for being here and for your thoughtful comment! 🙌

Most of his subjects are smiling and/or look happy. He's smiling in the photos of him. Is he the ultimate feel-good photographer? He was a great photographer. When will you do a video on Joel-Peter Witkin?

Hey, thanks for your comment and the suggestion! 🖤 It’s true that Joel-Peter Witkin has a very unique and provocative style, but personally, I don’t connect much with that type of photography. His work can be quite intense for some viewers, and due to RUclips's policies, I have to be mindful of the content I upload to ensure it meets the platform's guidelines. 🙏
I love exploring photographers with different visions, and while I may not cover Witkin’s work, I’ll be sharing more videos on other amazing artists that I think you’ll enjoy. Thanks for your interest and for being part of the channel’s community!
